This is my absolute favorite time of year. The crisp air feels like a sigh of relief from the summer heat, and nothing beats the clear blue of an early November sky. It's a time when our hearts focus on what we're thankful for and of all the sentiments about gratitude I have come across over the years (and there are hundreds!) one from British philosopher James Allen stays with me: "No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks." This month we focus on stories that make us feel that urgent duty to return thanks. We meet Adam and Ashley Cross who welcomed their daughter Magnolia through international adoption. They share their personal journey of grief, faith, and ultimately, joy. We travel to Land to Table Farm, the sustainable farm owned and operated by Chattanooga real estate juggernaut Grace Frank. We also get tips from Blluum owner Christine Waldrop about how to create the perfect fall centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. We meet Jeanne Trewitt and Charlie Kimball, owners of A Child's Garden Boutique and Zi Olive, respectively. You'll be as charmed by them as I was when I heard their story of enduring friendship and a special partnership that makes shopping for children's clothing and olive oil a truly memorable experience. In a fitting feature for our "Thankful" issue, we share an inside look at the launch party for Chattanooga City Lifestyle. We gathered with friends, family, and supporters to celebrate the magazine, and to sincerely thank the community for welcoming us into your homes each month. The "urgent duty to return thanks" lays on my heart each day, but it lays especially heavily this time of year. The local office transitioned to Comparion in May of 2022, and it will be the first local sales office in the company’s history to display the new exterior signage.

Chinese artisans will turn the Chattanooga Zoo into an illuminated menagerie with more than 38 larger-than-life, interactive lanterns. This spectacular celebration of art, culture and the beauty of traditional Asian lanterns will be the most unique holiday light display in Chattanooga. This immersive event will also feature artisans, performers, and culinary experiences on selected dates. The festival runs November 10, 2022 - January 15, 2023, 6 - 10 p.m. Wednesday - Sunday.

A New Branch on an Old Tree THE CROSS FAMILY’S JOURNEY TO ADOPTION

For years, Adam and Ashley Cross longed to expand their family, but it never happened. This struggle, felt by many, was the root of adversity for the couple for quite some time. However, through the gift of adoption, Adam and Ashley were able to complete their family with the addition of their daughter Magnolia. We spoke with Ashley about her family's adoption story. WHAT LED YOU AND ADAM TO ADOPT? Throughout our relationship, Adam and I have said we want to be a new branch on an old tree. This means so many things to us regarding our marriage and family as we both come from split homes. We always knew we wanted children, but conceiving was difficult for us. We were fortunate to be blessed with our son, Evan, after struggling for a year and a half. When Evan was two, we decided to try for another child. It never happened, and it almost tore us apart. Instead, we clung to each other and prayed. We both agreed that adoption was our next step in growing our family. We felt like God told us, “Here’s another opportunity to grow that branch”.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR TIME IN KOREA ACCLIMATING AS A FAMILY OF FOUR. Our time in South Korea acclimating as a family of four was extremely difficult. Magnolia had been taken from the only person she had known and trusted since birth, her foster mom. I wondered for days if we had made the right decision as we all four cried in the floor of our apartment. Those tears were mixed with emotions— feelings of loss, uncertainty, grief, trauma, rejection, guilt, and anxiety. Yet as each new day came, moments of bonding and attachment began to form. Slowly, very slowly, Magnolia began to see us as safe and realized we weren’t going away. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED THROUGH THIS PROCESS? Through the wait and the process, I learned so much. I learned the power of prayer and how God’s timing is perfect. While we joined our son Evan in praying for a baby, I prayed for the woman who had the courageous love to allow us and Magnolia this opportunity, her birth mom. I also prayed for Magnolia’s foster mom, who had the selfless love to care for a child as her own CONTINUED >

knowing it was temporary and had been doing it for 30 years. I learned that I am not in control and to trust that God’s plans are bigger and better than anything I can try to orchestrate on my own. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ON THIS JOURNEY? For families considering adoption, my advice would be to pray and prepare. Pray for the birth family making this life-changing decision. Pray for the foster family who will experience their own grief and yet continue to love. Pray and prepare for your own heart and mind to know that adoption is both beautiful and tragic. It is both joyful and heartbreaking. No one really understands adoption like other adoptive families. Find your people. You will need them. But also know and believe you can do this! Your family can be a new branch on an old tree.

Grace Frank, a fourth-generation farmer from South Dakota, began Land to Table Farm with raw land—adapting forty acres into a highly sustainable farm utilizing a solar and rainwater catchment system. A well-lived life is filled with seasons of joy, of grief, of renewal, and with a fair share of serendipity. And so it is that an olive oil store wound up in a children’s boutique on Chattanooga’s Northshore. Zi Olive and A Child’s Garden owners, Charlie Kimball and Jeanne Trewitt respectively, have known each other since the second grade. After visiting the Zi Olive store in Gatlinburg, Kimball jumped at the chance to bring the brand to Chattanooga. He started the search for his own store space, but most were larger than what he needed, so he mentioned his dilemma to his friends Bill and Jeanne Trewitt. Jeanne was reluctant at first. “I knew he only needed 200 square feet, but I said, Charlie, I use my space,” remembers Trewitt. It was Jeanne’s late husband Bill who convinced her to carve out the space for what would become Zi Olive. “Bill said I think it would be good for you, I think you should do this.”

Jeanne opened A Child’s Garden in 2005 on a whim. She quips, “It’s the best hobby turned profession anyone could have.” Her store carries luxury children’s brands like Maileg Mice toys, Lulu Bebe, Feltman Brothers, Sarah Louise, and Kissy Kissy. When it was time for Charlie to move in, she did her part to clear out the corner of her store. Charlie built walls and shelving, and on Oct 1, 2019, Zi Olive officially opened inside A Child’s Garden. With Zi Olive, Charlie hopes people are encouraged to have fun in the kitchen. He enjoys sharing about the health benefits of olive oil, and says, “I want to provide a real experience for people when they come in my store.” “It’s been the perfect match,” says Trewitt. I can go over to his side and sell olive oils, and then he comes over to my side and sells clothes.” The pair of stores is located at 135 Frazier Avenue. Their charm is matched only by their proprietors—a perfect match indeed.

From pumpkin and apple picking to wine tasting and corn mazes, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy autumn with family and friends. Smith-Perry Berries What began as a joint venture between two farmers, Smith-Perry Berries is a farm filled with seasonal activities year-round. Fall at Smith-Perry Berries is arguably the most eventful season, with pumpkin picking, hayrides, cow trains, duck races and much more. The farm also has a barn with artifacts to teach visitors about the work that goes into managing and maintaining a farm.

Passed down through generations, this family farm boasts beautiful scenery and fall festivities including a scenic hayride and carriage rides to explore the farm's stunning views. The farm also offers flower-picking, pumpkin patches, bonfires for marshmallow roasting, and delicious, ready-to-eat goodies. Visitors can also adventure through two corn mazes and a themed night maze.

Peacefully resting atop Fredonia Mountain on the Cumberland Plateau, Wheeler's Orchard & Vineyard is just an hour outside of Chattanooga amidst rolling hills and colorful mountainscapes. Here, you can enjoy a stroll through the orchard, pack a picnic and lay beneath the trees to enjoy an escape in the countryside. Apart from the vineyard, Wheeler's provides tours, apple picking, field trips, and more.

The Southern Belle Riverboat is located in downtown Chattanooga on the Tennessee River. Each fall, the boat takes its guests on a fall foliage sightseeing voyage on the river to enjoy the mountain views from the water. The Southern Belle provides concessions so that guests can dine or enjoy a glass of wine as they travel.

As the holiday season approaches, giving is on many people's minds. Here are some meaningful, local ways that you can give of your time, treasure, and expertise. TIME McKamey Animal Center - Lending a hand to help the voiceless always goes a long way. McKamey Animal Center makes it easy to contribute as much of your time as you are able. Available opportunities range “from on-site animal and physical plant care to offsite support fostering animals and preparing enrichment toys” says Executive Director Inga Fricke. Welcoming younger volunteers, McKamey’s Fetch-A-Book program provides children a unique opportunity to practice their reading skills alongside animal companions. If you are interested in helping operationally, there are plenty of behind-the-scenes tasks from “laundry, to picking up supplies and helping maintain and improve the center property.” To learn more about the various opportunities and get involved, visit www.mckameyanimalcenter.org. TREASURE Friends of the Troops - When Jessica Duke started “Friends of the Troops” she had a dream to directly offer support to Chattanooga

veterans and their families. Now, four years later, her local nonprofit has grown nationally and has received consecutive recognition as a ‘Top Rated Nonprofit’ with the ‘Seal of Transparency.’ The greatest contributing factor to the success of the organization comes directly from the generous financial donations received. Duke stresses that “because we are a special niche, we don’t qualify for federal grants and so 100% of funds received come from individual donors and corporate supporters.” There is a substantial need here in Chattanooga to help our service men and women directly. Of all the types of donations received, financial gifts have the greatest impact. With a “98% operational efficiency donations go directly where they should, to help our local veterans” says Duke. The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer’s mission is to erase the effects of childhood cancer for entire families by providing essential specialized intervention beginning at the time off a child’s diagnosis and continuing through the survivorship of the whole family. On September 30, Chattanooga City Lifestyle's publisher, Rebecca Kilday, hosted a launch party for the publication at Parkside Hall. With over 70 guests in attendance, advertisers, business owners, supporters, and friends of the magazine gathered to celebrate the contributions the publication has already made to the community. Since the launch issue in June, Chattanooga City Lifestyle has featured over 30 stories including articles on six locally-owned businesses, four women-owned businesses, six stories of community significance (including the Hunter Museum of Art’s 70th Anniversary and the return of Riverbend) and four non-profit organizations and we're just getting started. 1.
