When Scott and Teresa Fischer met at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1994, his focus was on fine art and hers was on illustration. But after graduating, they sort of flipped their interests. Teresa is recognized for her whimsical fine art oil paintings, while Scott is best known for his art illustrations. He may have recognized his true calling as a child, though. “I actually wrote a paper in 4th grade about how I wanted to do the art for Dungeons & Dragons,” says Scott. He got his wish. Today, his artwork can be found in Dungeons & Dragons books, Magic: The Gathering cards, and in World of Warcraft and other blockbuster gaming enterprises as well. He’s also an instructor at the world-famous Illustration Master Class and SmArt School, inspiring and helping future generations of artists. He says there was never any doubt about becoming an artist. His mother, Marie Fischer, is also an artist, and her work hangs in galleries on Cape Cod. “I grew up in a very creative and supporting household,” says Scott. With a father in the Air Force, he and his family would move every three or four years. “At every new base, I would just draw to keep myself entertained

and I found making art was a nice way to make friends as well.” Teresa also found companionship in art. “I was always a very creative kid,” she says. “I grew up in Indiana on a little family farm and there weren’t many kids around. I had to entertain myself with all my imaginary friends, but by the time I was in middle school, I really understood the power of drawing and painting and being able to put what was in my head on paper.” Many of her award-winning paintings are actually reminiscent of her childhood. “I just wanted to paint my bliss and paint what excited me,” says Teresa. “I’m really drawn to objects, so if you look through my artwork, you’ll see that.” She believes objects, especially nostalgic objects, have a story to tell, and she uses them as characters that come to life in playful visual stories. “I set the stage, kind of like setting the stage for a theatrical experience,” she says. In one of her paintings, she pays homage to Lyman Frank Baum, the author who penned the Wizard of Oz and so many other wonderful stories. She incorporated a hot air balloon and even flying monkeys into the scene!

The couple, who have been married since 1996 and have a 19-year-old daughter, Sarah, reside in Belchertown, MA, but will soon be in New Jersey. Their incredible works of art will be on display at the Wentworth Gallery at Short Hills during the month of March, and, on March 18th, patrons will be able to meet them there. “When I saw that Wentworth was representing artists like Paul Stanley, Joe Satriani and Rick Allen who are literally rock stars I went to see at arenas - oh my God!” says Scott. “That, along with the gallery approaching me for fantasy art, speaks volumes.” Fantasy art in general has been exploding, he says, and the fact that Wentworth had that level of vision and wanted to embrace it was amazing. “Ask the people who grew up on Star Wars and on The Hobbit movies and all of that stuff. As they reach midlife, they want to touch the things that they loved as children and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” Scott and Teresa love being able to present their artwork as a team. “I can’t even tell you how rewarding it is for us to have a show hanging together in the same space with our diverse styles” says Scott. “It’s really magical and something special.” Adds Teresa, “The fact is we want to get our work out there to the world and to the right people. My work has that little bit of lighthearted whimsy to it and Wentworth thought that would be perfect for their gallery. Bringing us together as a team was also something they knew their clientele would enjoy.” The duo is looking forward to meeting the people who appreciate their artwork and will be thrilled to make some new fans too. So, come out to Wentworth Gallery to see their unforgettable works of art, and on March 18, meet the artists themselves!

As a young girl, Adrienne Gallmann enjoyed curating rock collections, so it seems only appropriate that she now works with tile and other hard surface materials. A senior designer, commercial job specialist and showroom manager for Short Hills Marble & Tile, she spends her days bringing marbles, stones and other hard surface materials into homes and businesses to enhance the look and feel of their indoor and outdoor spaces. “Everyone on staff has interior design backgrounds, and our showroom has a homey, comfortable vibe,” says Adrienne. “We want people to have a good experience when they come in. But, we don’t just sell from the showroom - we go out and do onsite consultations. People really look to us for guidance.” They work with very reputable vendors that have high quality materials, and carry

merchandise at different price points. Once the tile is chosen, a CAD drawing is formulated so buyers can see exactly how it will look in their space. “We’re also going to start offering a la carte services like 3D renderings,” she says. Their team can do the installation or provide great referrals too. “We also work very diligently with contractors and other designers to make sure all the communication is there. No stone is left unturned - no pun intended!” Short Hills Marble & Tile is also a direct importer, so it has an incredible amount of inventory available. “Our sister company, Allstone, a wholesale division, imports tile from around the world and they sell to about 250 showrooms throughout the U.S.” Marble and other white materials are still in high demand. “People like to go

a little bit more classic with the hard finishes and then introduce color in a fabric or another medium.” As an experienced designer, Adrienne can put together a look using materials on hand, or if someone comes in with fabric or a rug with a design they love, she can literally recreate that design in a tile format. “It’s fun because I can take their vision, transfer it into my vision and see it every step of the way from drawing out the mosaics, to sending it to the factory, to seeing the sample, to production, to installation.” She adds, “I love meeting different people and understanding their dynamics and backgrounds. It’s a gratifying experience to give somebody something that they will truly love for years to come.” ShortHillsTile.com

Last spring, Cove Carpet One Floor & Home welcomed its new owner, Jerry Kelly. With Cove’s extensive history and sterling reputation in Summit and the surrounding areas, combined with Jerry’s long-time experience in the industry, the business is continuing to flourish. “I started as an installer when I was 19, and it was just a fluke that I got into the industry,” he says. “I didn’t like going to college and my dad knew a guy who was looking for a helper in his carpet store in Florham

Park, where I grew up. I gave it a shot and from day one I loved it. Every job was similar enough, but different enough so that it was never boring. And, people were so happy when we were done - it was a good feeling. That carried me for the next 30 years.” Jerry owned another showroom in Cedar Knolls and already had a relationship with Cove for many years. “I always said, ‘If you’re ever thinking about selling…’ and here we are. So far it has been a great experience.”

He is a hands-on owner, and has totally renovated the showroom. “Since I’ve been here, we painted and tried to lower everything so that when you walk in, you can see farther in than before and it’s a little airier. Our salespeople do a great job of asking the right questions to point you in the right direction, so you’re not just left looking on your own. They’ve been in this business most of their lives, so they know what they’re doing.” The store carries an extensive variety of handmade and hand-loomed wools and synthetics from around the world from some of the most prestigious manufacturers. “The former owners built up relationships with these mills, and our installers are second to none. Their abilities make customers’ homes look like ads in magazines.” Cove also works with many designers and architects. There’s a wide range of designs available - everything from traditional and modern to kids’ rooms. “Traditional patterns like diamonds, stripes, and plaids are still around, but with a new spin on the look. Instead of jewel tones, colors like grays, blues and neutrals have pretty much taken over,” he says. “There are a lot of abstract patterns now that actually make your flooring look like a work of art, so carpet can make its own statement instead of just being a backdrop.” While flat weaves are the most requested, shag carpeting has actually made a surprising comeback. “Shag snuck

back in a few years ago, and we have a bunch of different ones. Sisal has also made a huge resurgence.” Kids are still asking for colors to go with their sports teams, or if they’re really young, carpets with kid themes like little road maps. Cove also has manufacturers that carry happy, vibrant colors like neon green and bright purple. While carpeting has lost a lot of ground to hard surface materials, many people still prefer carpeting in a room, especially bedrooms. “Whether it’s wall to wall or area rugs, carpet makes a room cozier, warmer and quieter,” says Jerry. “We also do a lot of stairs runners, for the design aspect as well as to prevent a possible slip on the stairs.” Cove also offers real wood flooring - prefinished and unfinished that is sanded and stained - but the newer flooring options, like luxury vinyl, are taking the industry by storm. “The ones that look like wood are amazing,” he says. These “floating floors” can go right over a ceramic tile or real hardwood floor without having to tear it up or damage it. In addition to being less expensive than hardwood, another advantage of vinyl flooring is that it doesn’t get damaged when it gets wet, so it’s great in a kitchen. samples as well. “It’s important to see the sample in your home’s light at different times of the day,” says Jerry. People also like to touch what they’re buying. While there is usually a wait time of four to six weeks for flooring, Cove does keep stock rolls of carpeting in the store for when something is needed very quickly.
