Our Health And Wellness Issue For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. We approached this issue from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your physical, emotional, dental and financial health. This year we look forward to being the best version of ourselves that we can be, including being great parents, family and community members and friends. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation and work to establish more regular rest in your work week. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! Happy New Year!

Healthy Resolutions for the New Year Regular screenings help optimize our bodies and minds

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY & PROVIDED

While many of our new year’s resolutions pertain to optimizing our health, we’re not always sure how to go about it. What tests should we be having, how often, and when? Here to help guide us is Anokhi Shah, MD, a physician with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and member of RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group who has an office in Livingston. Just because we feel fine doesn’t mean that we don’t need to be regularly checked out for a myriad of medical issues. “The main point of the physical exam is actually to do it when you feel well since it’s to detect issues that you wouldn’t necessarily feel,” she says. “When we’re screening for cancer, it’s when the cancer is very tiny and something that won’t necessarily give you symptoms. We often do blood work too at physicals, and it

can find things that also don’t cause symptoms such as high cholesterol.” The taking of vital signs is also very informative. “That’s probably one of the most important data sets we collect during the physical,” says Dr. Shah.” Many people, for example, have no idea if their blood pressure is too high. Another critical thing that’s covered during the visit, she says, is talking to patients about their daily habits. “What are they doing for exercise and how are their eating habits? Just getting to know them helps me optimize their daily lives and make them healthier.” Knowing your family’s medical history is also helpful. “Certain conditions such as heart disease and diabetes may be genetic, and when we screen for cancer CONTINUED >

and other medical issues, we may screen more frequently if a family member has had an issue. It’s always important to update that with us every year because your family’s health will change. Our guidelines may also change from time to time.” For example, something that has recently changed is the age at which we should start getting screened for colon cancer. “If the patient has no issues, we start everyone at 45 [it used to be 50] and then every 10 years,” says Dr. Shah. “There are different ways to screen for colon cancer, so depending on the type of risk, we may not necessarily recommend a colonoscopy. It may be as simple as a stool test.” Another change is screening for lung cancer in patients who smoke. “We now do low-dose CT scans,” she says. “We’ll also screen smokers for aneurysms.” For breast cancer screening, mammograms should start at 40. “Guidelines recommend they be done every one to two years; we usually do them yearly. If you have genetic issues, screening may start as early as 30.” Bone density tests are also important. “For women, we usually start at 65. We don’t usually screen men unless they’ve been taking certain medications, had a fracture from a minor injury, or if they’ve been a smoker for a long time.”

Managing health issues through specialized physical therapy

At different stages of our lives, women and men can experience a host of physical issues. What many of us don’t know is how much pelvic health can influence overall health and wellness. “Whether they’re having pain in their pelvis, back, or hips, or are having urinary or bowel symptoms or sexual issues, we can make sure that the pelvic floor is supported and that they’re on a good exercise program that supports them during different stages of their lives,” says Stacey Futterman Tauriello, a physical therapist and founder of 5 POINT Physical Therapy and Wellness LLC in Millburn and New York City. She and her team of physical therapists, Stephanie White and Jennifer Lynch, as well as acupuncturist, Leah Kim, work together to help clients live better lives by improving the strength and balance of the pelvis. Educating people is also a big component of the practice. “Poor bladder habits usually start in childhood,” says Stacey. “We were often told to go before we leave the house ‘just in case.’ You should be able to hold urination for three hours, and one of the goals with pelvic health is nipping future problems in the bud.” Another issue for young women is painful periods and endometriosis; these can also relate to pelvic health.

24

O PE N H OU SE | FITNESS

“The support of a pelvic floor specialist during these times is so important because we can actually make sure that the pelvis is balanced and that the pelvic floor is kept at a nice neutral stance where it’s not overutilized.” Stress, says Stacey, can increase urgency and frequency, as can drinking things that can irritate our bladders like diet soda and beer. “The healthiest thing to drink is water and if you want to add a little fruit or a little cucumber, that’s great.” Her practice handles a lot of pregnancy and postpartum issues. “We believe that all pregnant women should have at least one visit with a pelvic health specialist to teach them body mechanics and posture, and make sure their pelvic floor is good for pushing,” she says. “We also make sure they understand what can happen postpartum.” For women in their 40s and 50s, hormones start changing. Being able to understand their bodies and being able to exercise correctly and efficiently is important. “Women should start talking about any related issues with their healthcare providers in order to be proactive in keeping their bodies in a nice equilibrium,” says Stacey. To learn more about obtaining your best pelvic health, go to 5pointpt.com.

1 2.

Physical therapists who specialize in pelvic health focus on things like urinary incontinence, frequency and urgency anything related to the bladder, plus anything related to the bowel, including bowel dysfunction, and pain during physical intimacy, prenatal and postpartum issues, and pre-and post-menopausal symptoms.

2 Don’t assume that any discomfort or issues you’re experiencing is part of the natural aging process or due to the aftereffects of childbirth. There are many things that can be done at all stages of your life to either get rid of or alleviate these symptoms.

3 3.

If you’re pregnant, it’s a good idea to see a pelvic specialist before giving birth to prepare your body for an optimal experience. You’ll also learn what issues may arise afterward and how pelvic exercises can help with those.

4 For healthy bladder habits, avoid certain foods that might irritate the bladder such as beer, diet soda and anything containing artificial sweeteners. Drink water whenever possible, and if you don’t like it plain, add fruits and other healthy, natural flavor infusions. See the article is this issue for some great recipes. 4. LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!

T R E N D SE T T E R | L IFE + CULTURE

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Financial Strategies for Every Stage of Life Professional advice for today and all year long ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY

In this unpredictable financial climate, knowing how to invest our money and handle our assets can be complicated. Some of us turn to the internet, and others to friends, family, and respected colleagues. But, in order to make the right decisions at the right time, the best person to speak with is a professional financial advisor. “Everyone has different goals, objectives and different trajectories in their careers,” says Jeff Feinstein, a principal and wealth advisor with KBK Wealth Management, LLC. “So, we typically do a full intake session, called a discovery meeting. We ask a lot of questions in order to get to know more about them. We then follow up with what we need for analysis and to create a recommendation, a financial plan.” This financial plan, he says, consists of items that are related to financial issues in their lives, such as cash flow, budgeting, retirement planning, tax planning, estate planning, and risk management. The other components are investing, growing and protecting clients’ wealth. Adds Jeff, “When there’s an economic crisis related to inflation, it’s really important to have somebody who really watches the markets and knows what resources solutions and strategies to take advantage of.” Financial advisors are also there to really help people make decisions. “Whether you’re buying a house, leasing or renting a car, financing or saving for college or getting ready for retirement, that’s really where people end up engaging a financial advisor.” His firm, KBK Wealth Management, LLC has been in business for over 30 years. “First and foremost, what separates us from a lot of other firms is our holistic financial planning,” he says. “It’s very personalized since everyone’s situation is different.” Although his office is in New York City, he meets with people in New Jersey and Connecticut as well. He also holds virtual meetings. Here, Jeff gives us some tips on how we can best manage our money and other assets.

1. REVIEW AND MONITOR YOUR INVESTMENTS Consistently review and monitor your investments and work with a financial advisor to assess levels of risk. 2022 was a volatile year and investors will need to consistently rebalance to ensure clients’ objectives are met in the upcoming months.

2. INVEST FOR THE LONG-TERM, NOT THE SHORT-TERM The last three years have brought many unexpected events such as the pandemic, geopolitical tension, supply chain issues and inflation. It can be challenging to time the market, but investors should keep longterm goals in mind by not panic selling or being overwhelmed by the volatility in the short term.

3. KEEP A DIVERSIFIED PORTFOLIO As cliché as it sounds, don’t hold all your eggs in one basket. Keeping your investments diversified helps mitigate the risk and volatility in your portfolio.

4. REVIEW ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN, NOT JUST INVESTMENTS Now is the time to review all aspects of your financial plan with an advisor. College planning, retirement strategies, spending and savings, life and disability insurance, and estate planning are all factors to consider when reviewing your overall financial plan.

5. COMMUNICATE YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN WITH FAMILY It’s important to have a family discussion to ensure your partner is aware of financial plans, including assets and liabilities. It’s equally as important that adults connect with elder parents on their financial plans so parents feel supported knowing their children are informed and can help navigate the future.

“When seeking out a financial advisor, it’s important to develop a relationship so that they know what's going on in your life personally and professionally in order to make the best recommendations.” CONTINUED >

“Market volatility is inevitable, but working with the right financial advisor will strategically set you up for long-term success.” Before becoming involved in the financial industry, Jeff worked as a sports agent for SFX Baseball Group (now ISE Worldwide), one of the country’s premier baseball agencies. “I’ve been to countless All-Star and World Series games and have met some incredible people,” he says. “I’ve worked with Hall of Famers and MVPs and I still work with some of them now, but on the financial side.” When not helping people improve their financial health and wealth, Jeff, from Short Hills, loves spending time with his wife, Alexandra, their two children, 6-year-old Gemma

and 3-year-old Case, and the family dog, Hank. “As a family, we love to travel.” He adds, “I work with a lot of families with young kids and I’m fortunate to also work with a lot of my client’s parents. That’s been an incredible part of this practice because some of the same decisions I’m making for my family, I’m making for my clients, and some of the same decisions I’m helping my parents with, I’m helping their parents with. So that’s really nice.” To learn more, visit kbkwealth.com.

Make Your Skin Glow SKINCARE SOLUTIONS FOR A FRESH AND BEAUTIFUL LOOK

A great skincare regimen is important all year round, but especially in the wintertime. Here is some expert advice on how to keep our skin healthy and beautiful not only when it’s cold, but all year round. “When looking for skincare products, it’s always good to research medical grade skincare lines as they contain more potent ingredients in their mixtures and they’re more medically developed to actually transform the skin,” says Heather Dunn, the head aesthetician at Fresh Face & Eye in Chatham. Dr. Baljeet Purewal, a board-certified Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon, and the owner of the practice takes her time to research the ingredients she puts into her products to really benefit the skin, says Heather. “It’s always good to look at the label and make sure the first few ingredients are the important ones like vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and various collagen peptides.”

The best regimen is one that you will do every day. She recommends incorporating retinol into your routine, especially in cold weather. “Retinol is basically a form of vitamin A, and it helps to boost collagen in our skin and also gently exfoliates our skin to help renew it and keep it looking fresh. I personally love our product Radiant Me. It combines vitamin C and retinol along with other amazing hydrating peptides to help brighten and exfoliate your skin.” Switching over to a heavier moisturizer in the wintertime is also necessary. “We have a great one called Nourish Me, which helps calm down the pink tones in our skin and also helps brighten it,” says Heather. “The peptides also really nourish skin’s health.” Of course, we should be incorporating sunscreen all year round. “The sun is a big factor when it comes to aging the skin, so finding a good SPF that you love and will wear every day is smart. We should always be moisturizing our necks too.” The older our skin gets, the more care it needs. As we age, the natural exfoliation process of our skin slows down, so she says it’s critical to incorporate a retinol regimen and other exfoliating acids because they’ll help shed dead skin cells faster. “We have Brighten Me pads and they really help to brighten the skin and lighten brown spots.” She says one of their most popular procedures, especially around the fall and winter, is the BBL PhotoFacial. “It helps promote a more even skin tone and builds collagen in your skin.” CONTINUED >

Also important is to use an eye cream on upper and lower eyes because the eye skin is thin and delicate, so you want to protect that. For puffy eyes, Fresh Face & Eye offers Revive Me masks that are enriched with collagen, peptides and hydrating serums. The YUMILash Lift is another great option for eyes. “It helps lift and curl your natural lashes and also tints them to make them a little bit darker,” she says. For more information on products and procedures, go to freshfaceandeye.com.

Dr. Baljeet Purewal has been practicing for over 15 years, specializing in oculoplastic surgery. The focus of her practice at Fresh Face & Eye, which opened in 2019, is on the eyes and face.
