This month we are sharing with you great stories to celebrate the men in our communities! Jimmy Bellas grew up in the restaurant business. “In 1949 my Dad opened his first diner. Many years and diners later, he opened a landmark waterfront restaurant on Long Island.” As a kid, Jimmy washed dishes, cleaned silverware, and bussed tables. “I studied Restaurant and Hotel Management in college, and when I graduated, ran the restaurant with my Dad.” Upon his retirement, the restaurant closed and Jimmy opened his own place, a small Italian bistro nearby, where he met his wife Karen and later married. “The restaurant business is wonderful, but the hours are difficult. I remember witnessing the toll it took on my family. I made a promise to myself that when I got married, I’d sell. So I did that same year.” After a 20+ year career in corporate America, Jimmy still found the restaurant business to be in his blood. He’d often sit around the family table regaling his wife and sons, Nico and LJ, with nostalgic stories. “Maybe someday we'll open up a little place.” One evening at the table Nico looked at Karen and I and said, ‘Why don't you just do it?” As it turned out, the timing was perfect. They opened Sorriso Kitchen, a charming eatery in Chatham that serves a creative menu of breakfast

The food is amazingly fresh and much of it comes from local farms in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Their son LJ, who has Down Syndrome, was truly the inspiration for the business and its name as they wanted to give him a place to work after graduation. Sorriso, means “smile” in Italian. Karen, a creative director, designed the restaurant and everything about it. “It’s been wonderful having our family working together” says Jimmy. Mondays, when the restaurant is closed, classes are held for special needs students to learn restaurant skills. “We are
passionate about serving quality food, service and supporting this community,” To expand the program and encourage other businesses to do the same, he and Karen have started a charitable foundation. “We’re so excited!” he says. “We'll be able to support this type of program and even seed and create new ones to support employment of the developmentally disabled.” “This all feels so meant to be” says Jimmy. His advice to others who are thinking about taking the leap into a new career: “Follow your passion, but be sure that the leap you're taking is one that's going to continuously provide you the love for what you're doing.”

A common sports injury is tearing the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). Since it’s one the key ligaments that help stabilize the knee joint, these tears can be extremely debilitating. Over the last 30 years, treatment has relatively stayed the same - until now. “The goal of this newer procedure is to repair the ACL rather than reconstruct it,” says Dr. Louis Rizio, an orthopedic sports-medicine physician. “The hope is to save your ACL by combining sutures (stitches) and collagen implant to enhance healing. This is a drastic” change in ACL management.” He believes he was the first doctor to perform this surgery in Northern Jersey since it was approved by the FDA about a year ago. The implant is first soaked in the patient's blood for a few minutes with the idea that this will create growth factors. He says early data shows that muscle strength and recovery may be faster with this technique. “The rehab is a little bit slower in the first four weeks because we're trying to protect the implant, but trauma from the surgical procedure is less because the procedure’s less invasive.” Dr. Rizio adds, “It can also be used for young patients, which is huge. Pediatric patients are suffering a lot more ACL tears because there are a lot of kids playing sports at higher frequencies and at higher levels. The traditional
techniques of reconstructing an ACL could potentially damage their growth plate. With this procedure, that’s less likely, and also gives a younger person an opportunity to keep their ACL rather than taking a graft from one of their other tendons to reconstruct the ligament.” There’s also no age limit. The only restriction with the implant is the timing of the surgery. The FDA, he says, has not approved it for tears older than 30 to 50 days. Dr. Rizzo has worked with some elite athletes over the years. “After my orthopedic residency, I did a year of fellowship specifically in sports medicine, and during that time I worked with many professional teams, including the Miami Dolphins, the Florida Marlins, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dr. Tejal Ramaiya opened Body Moksha Physical Therapy in 2017 in order to give patients a better overall experience. “A healthcare professional’s utmost priority is managing a person’s health and function,” she says. “Dealing with pain and recovery is multifaceted, not a cookie cutter strategy. I decided to open my own practice so I could have more control over how I was helping my patients.” She says many things come into play in someone’s recovery such as the person’s fears and anxieties around their injury, their experience and relationship with exercise, their lifestyle, and their life and fitness goals. “At Body Moksha Physical Therapy, we dedicate an entire 60 minutes to each patient. This allows us to devote quality time to the person in front of us to get to the root cause of injury and develop an individualized holistic plan rather than using a band aid approach. We aren’t looking to provide a short term fix - we want to give our patients a permanent solution while teaching them how to make the best decisions about their health so they can be in control of their own bodies.” A physical therapist for 22 years, Dr. Tejal initially became interested in physical therapy at the age of 16, when her grandfather, who lived with her and her family, became sick and went into an inpatient rehab facility for two weeks. “I used to go visit him and watch him during his physical therapy sessions. It just seemed like something I would love to do…helping people get stronger and getting them back home with their families.”
Before opening Body Moksha, she worked in various private practices in New Jersey, New York, and Maryland. Today, she lives in Madison and has patients from all over the state. “We currently have a team of three including myself,” says Dr. Tejal. “Sam, who is our front desk person, handles admin, marketing, and customer service. She truly lines up with our core values and has been a huge asset to our practice. Dr. Jen [Ryan] is an amazing physical therapist as well as a strength coach. She’s not only a pelvic floor specialized physical therapist, but also a certified Olympic weightlifting and CrossFit coach.” Body Moksha, she explains, is one of the few physical therapy practices in the area which focuses on pelvic floor physical therapy. Another treatment approach that makes them stand out is that they emphasize true strength training. “As your body ages, it loses 7-10% of muscle mass per decade,” says Dr. Tejal. “By the time you hit 80, you have lost up to 40% of your muscle mass since you were 40! We strength train our patients of all ages, yes, even 80, to prepare their bodies to tolerate the demands of their life and their favorite activities.” She and her staff take great pride in really knowing their patients. “We’ve built a community where people feel warm and welcome and never feel alone in their recovery journey,” she says. “We are there to support them every step of the way, even when they’re not in our office. Legends Gallery at Frames on Main in Chatham has been offering sports memorabilia for over 20 years. There’s everything from framed classic sports photos and jerseys to signed baseballs, football helmets, and hockey pucks. It has also hosted autograph-signing events with professional athletes like Eli Manning, Carli Lloyd, and Keith Hernandez. “It's a quick thrill to get to meet, say, Mariano Rivera, get your item autographed and take a picture with him,” says owner Greg Dailey. Guests buy tickets beforehand, then either bring in their own memorabilia or buy them at the gallery. Greg is now expanding into the exciting world of music legends by offering

professionally-framed photographs of iconic moments in music history signed by the extremely accomplished photographers who took them. “There’s Bob Gruen, who was John Lennon’s and Yoko Ono’s photographer. I also have Ron Pownall, who was a tour photographer for Aerosmith, and Frank White, who has been shooting concerts for years. He did Meatloaf’s Bat Out of Hell II album cover. There’s also John Comerford, a Chatham guy, who has shot multiple album covers for artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughn.” There’s another new and unique offering as well. “I had a client bring in what's called sound waves prints to be framed, which are pretty cool,” he says. “One was a Natalie Merchant piece signed by the singer herself.” Sound waves, he explains, are what you would see on a digital screen in a music studio. “What this particular artist has done is create relationships in the music industry, so now he's got all these sound waves and paints colors onto them,” says Greg. “Each one is different and signed by the musician. He does limited-edition runs of prints taken from photographs of his paintings.” In Legends Gallery right now, there are sound wave pieces from Jamie's Got A Gun signed by Steven Tyler, and Another Brick in the Wall, signed by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. “I've also got one from a band called Evanescence, featuring their main song, Bring Me to Life, which is signed by Amy Lee. It's actually my favorite piece and has this incredible purple color. I then have an old standby, Mama Said Knock You Out, by LL Cool J.” Each one of these pieces is beautifully framed. Greg buys each of these prints directly from the artist, who then donates the proceeds to each individual musician’s charity.
