LIFESTYLE LETTER
May - Ladies
May 2022 PUBLISHER S
Ana Meyer | ana.meyer@citylifestyle.com John Meyer | john.meyer@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local women entrepreneurs that have left me inspired and I hope they will inspire you too! In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it. If you have interesting, fun, and meaningful stories to share or are a business looking to grow within our community and the surrounding area, we would love to hear from you. Contact John.Meyer@ citylifestyle.com for marketing opportunities and Ana.Meyer@citylifestyle.com for editorials or call us at 973-944-1440. We look forward to seeing you around town!

Our face is the first thing we present to the world, so why not make it as beautiful as it can be? Dr. Baljeet Purewal of Fresh Face & Eye is here to help you do just that. “We always ask our patients what motivated them to come in,” she says. “We listen carefully to understand what’s bothering them.” Dr. Purewal is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in oculoplastic surgery, and the eyes and face are the focus of her practice. “With the eyelids, millimeters matter, so I'm used to working with very delicate, very intricate anatomy. It makes sense to do one specific type of surgery and be an expert at that.” The most common surgery she performs is on the upper and lower eyelids. There may be extra skin on the upper eyelid that causes the skin to droop down and make people’s eyes feel heavy, or cause them to look tired. For the lower eyelids, it's usually puffiness. “I often have patients tell me they’ve had a great night’s sleep, but when they go into work the next day, people ask if they’ve had a rough night. When we take that puffiness away, they look happier and more alert.” “I’ve always had heavy eyelids and as I’ve aged I felt they became heavier,” says Lisa Calicchio, one of her patients. “I finally decided to do something about it. I read about Dr. Purewal in this magazine, and the way she articulated how she works with her patients to achieve their goals caught my attention. She is realistic and doesn’t over-promise, so expectations are managed. The procedure was exactly as Dr. Purewal explained it would be.” Many of the surgeries take place in the office, which is located in a beautiful house in Chatham. “I wanted something warm and inviting and less of a sterile feeling,” says Dr. Purewal. “With the other offices I looked at, my patients would have had to take an elevator or be around other people. This space is very private, clean, and comfortable and has an element of luxury.” This attention to detail doesn’t end when the surgery is over and the patient walks out the door. After surgery, Dr. Purewal calls patients to find out how they’re feeling. The office then follows up with text messages with those who would rather CONTINUED >

communicate that way. “People usually have some questions or just want to know that we're thinking about them,” she says. “Dr. Purewal and her staff would check in with me daily, and I would text pictures of myself each day for a few weeks after the surgery so Dr. Purewal could monitor the healing and provide additional advice if needed,” says Lisa. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of the procedure and the excellent care the entire staff provided.” In addition to being trained in oculoplastic surgery, Dr. Purewal also completed two fellowships. “One was reconstructive and one was cosmetic, which allows me to provide high-quality, minimally invasive procedures all over the face. We combine different treatments to get a rejuvenated look without changing people's anatomy.”
For example, she explains, Botox can help lift the brows and smooth out the forehead. Fillers can help camouflage puffiness in the lower lids and fill hollows, while lasers can help with the texture of the skin and give a nice even tone and a hydrated appearance. Other procedures include Ultherapy, which lifts and tightens the skin, as well as broadband light photorejuvenation, which treats dark spots and other pigmentation and brings out overall skin luminosity. “You can really turn back the clock with all of those things and it's very subtle,” says Dr. Purewal. “If patients aren’t sure what they want done, we can create a plan and my staff and I commit to seeing them through the process.” Taking great care of our skin makes us feel good. “When I see patients being

proactive about what's bothering them or just taking care of themselves and how they look, I can literally see their mood elevate throughout the process.” Adds Lisa, “While the surgery is considered cosmetic for most and thus an out-ofpocket expense, the confidence boost and increase in positivity they will experience makes it worth it.” Although Fresh Face & Eye opened in 2019, Dr. Purewal has been practicing for over 15 years. “This is a boutique practice, and I believe the whole process should be fun and relaxing, while also effective. Our procedures are carefully selected and we've tested them on ourselves. We don't do anything that we don't believe in.” To find out more about Dr. Purewal and what Fresh Face & Eye can offer you, go to freshfaceandeye.com

While many women and men have health issues related to their pelvic areas, it’s not something that’s openly discussed. It’s often embarrassing to bring up even with our closest friends, and many times, doctor’s aren’t even aware of their patients’ plights. “Patients go to doctors, whether it’s for a yearly appointment, or for their six-week postpartum checkup, and are asked how everything is going,” says Stacey Futterman Tauriello, a physical therapist who concentrates on the pelvic area. “Most people assume that what they’re experiencing is part of aging or postpartum.” When she gave birth to Lexi in 2017, she learned firsthand what her patients were going through. “It gave me a lot more empathy for my patients and really helped me be a better therapist.” Stacey actually did a Motherhood series on the Today Show where she talked about her struggles first with fertility and then with urinary incontinence and other childbirth related issues. At her two 5 Point Physical Therapy and Wellness Centers in New York City and Millburn, patients are treated for everything relating to the pelvis. “We focus on things such as urinary incontinence, frequency, and urgency - anything related to the bladder, plus anything related to the bowel, including bowel dysfunction, and pain during physical intimacy, prenatal and postpartum issues, and pre- and post-menopausal symptoms. Also, about 30% of our patient population is male.” Physical therapists, says Stacey, don’t receive a lot of education on pelvic health. “I'm a senior instructor for Herman and Wallace [Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute] and educate physical therapists, occupational therapists basically anyone who is licensed to work with patients in this area- how to assess and treat pelvic dysfunction.”
People are often surprised at what pelvic physical therapy can do. “The biggest comments are ‘I wish I would have done this sooner.’ I think a lot of people just assume that they’re going to need surgery or they’re going to have to take medications. When patients say, ‘I feel the best I've ever felt,’ that to me is the positive feedback we want.” At her Wellness center in NYC, there are Pilates instructors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, and physical therapists. The Millburn center, in addition to physical therapy, offers acupuncture, and Pilates and Stacey is hoping to add on massage therapy as well very soon. In 2015 Stacey and her now husband purchased a house in Maplewood, NJ. “After the birth of my daughter, I realized I didn't want to commute into the city as often, so I opened a satellite practice Millburn NJ. My husband and I moved to Maplewood. Being five minutes from the center is amazing and Millburn is such a nice town.” Along with Stacey, the two other therapists in Millburn have 10 plus years of experience. “I graduated in 1996 and I love the work that I do in every aspect. I love being a female entrepreneur, a business owner, and I love helping my employees be the best they can be.” Being a boutique practice allows her and the other therapists to spend 45 minutes to an hour with patients each session. “Supporting women, especially during the prenatal and postpartum periods, is one of my passions because women don't get the care they need during pregnancy or postpartum as well as they could.” To get help for any pelvic issues you may be experiencing, go to 5pointpt.com.

During her time with the Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills (JLOSH), Kim Sleeman spent time assisting various charities. She knew there was so much need out there and in 2019, decided to focus on one particular aspect. Today, The Warehouse is her life’s work. “If people are homeless or in a shelter, and now they’ve obtained the resources to move, I want to help them move into a lovely new space,” she says. “When you meet these people, you realize the power of that moment for them – that they're getting their lives back. Part of that is giving them furniture so they feel comfortable in their new space.” Kim gets the furniture and other household goods such as decorative pillows, art work,
Kim Sleeman
rugs, and lamps through donations in and around Short Hills, where she lives. And, she is very particular about what she accepts. “When people call to donate, I ask them, ‘Would you be proud to pass this down to your children?’ Because that's the furniture I want.” The people she assists come from many different backgrounds and situations. They may have just lost their home in a fire, or are fleeing from an unhealthy situation. She also helps refugees coming in from all over the world, such as Afghanistan, Syria, and soon, Ukraine. She knows she’s going to need more help. Every member of her Board is from JLOSH, and they help her apply for grants and raise funds. “Last year, they came up with this super fun night,” says Kim. “We hosted it at Canoe Brook and there were 75 to 100 people there - it sold out in about an hour.” She’s hoping to hold other fundraising events soon. “Our mission, first and foremost, is to cultivate leadership and to develop the capacity of women as leaders,” says Larissa Wick Holdereid, the President of JLOSH. “Our business is to be in the community and we look at community impact through a lens of service, learning and leadership development.” Kim, who was born in West Africa, has always believed in giving back. About a week after graduating from Cornell University, she joined the Peace Corps and stayed with it for about two years. She says she is following in her father’s footprints, who at almost 85, still volunteers his time. The Warehouse is located in Orange. To move the furniture, she currently rents box trucks, but since that’s expensive, she hopes to raise enough funds to buy one in the future. To find out more, and to support The Warehouse with its mission, go to thewarehousenj.org.

WOMEN’S HEALTH BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS TO PROVIDE CUSTOMIZED CARE ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
As a primary care physician, Dr. Anokhi Shah enjoys the challenges of having in-depth knowledge of every part of the human body and being able to solve patients’ health issues. She also enjoys building strong relationships with her patients. “Relationships are important in my approach, which focuses on creating personalized treatment plans for patients,” she says. “I follow them throughout their whole adult lives - I’ve cried with them during tough moments and have also shared tears of joy. Improving the quality of their lives is what I find most fulfilling.” Dr. Shah cannot stress enough the importance of seeing a medical practitioner on a regular basis and making sure you receive all the tests and screenings needed at different stages of your life. Many people put these off throughout COVID, which has led to later diagnoses of many illnesses. Every individual is different not only with health problems, she says, but in terms of risks for certain conditions. “Knowing who my patients are is critical to designing an appropriate plan that will work in their lives. It’s important because sometimes one solution is not practical for everyone, but if we work together we can find what the patient will stick to and what will work for them.” After moving from Washington D.C., last year, Dr. Shah started working for Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and joined the Combined Medical Group of RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Health eight months ago. “Out of all the practices I interviewed with, RWJBarnabas Health felt the most like family,” she says. “The people I work with are professional and I look forward to coming into work every day.” Dr. Shah is currently accepting new patients and is looking forward to building those important relationships once again. SCREENING GUIDELINES Screening guidelines will vary from person to person and it can change depending on if your own health status changes or as you discover new information about your family’s health.
COMMON CONDITIONS Get screened regularly for common conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. An often overlooked screening is for osteoporosis, which can affect women later in life.
MENTAL HEALTH Another important screening is for mental health issues. When you come in for a physical with me, I perform a mental health screening for depression and anxiety.
SEVERAL CANCER SCREENINGS There are several cancer screenings we may suggest, depending on the patient’s age and risk, which includes breast cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer.

Get Away to the Mile High City Where the Mountains and Metropolitan Lifestyle Vibrantly Coincide
Visit Denver When you think about Denver, what immediately may come to mind is the gateway to the stunning landscape of mountain peaks with an abundance of recreational activities. But what you might not realize is just how unbelievable the urban experience is in this extraordinary city set at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, including a booming collection of sleek boutique hotels, one of the most engaging arts and live music scenes anywhere, and elevated restaurants, shops, museums and galleries amid lively and diverse neighborhood pockets that will have you experiencing total fulfillment from this metropolitan basecamp. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Denver to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this mile-high destination. It’s an urban landscape complemented with charming, walkable neighborhoods dedicated to giving visitors a taste of why it’s year-after-year ranked one of the best places to reside. With recent recognition and rankings, such as landing its spot as a top 10 city in the world to visit (Lonely Planet), leading the nation in attendance at performing arts events and exhibitions (National Endowment for the Arts), a repeat nominee for its foodie and craft beverage scene, and home to THE most attended concert venue of any size anywhere in the world (Billboard), Denver is bursting with profound cultural and lifestyle experiences, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. One neighborhood that sets Denver apart is Cherry Creek North, otherwise known as the Mile High City’s ultimate luxury shopping and dining destination with the highest concentration of small businesses. A well-known favorite of the locals, Cherry Creek feels like a city within a city with its urban oasis atmosphere.

Enter for a chance to win a 3-night getaway to Denver! Get your street chic and fun-filled soles ready for 16 walking-friendly blocks of shopping, pampering, entertaining and feasting. With ample annual events to check out, pair your festival-fan side with high-end couture hunting at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, perusing Hermes, Chanel, Stuart Weitzman and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few. As you work up an appetite, prepare to drink and devour the exquisite fare that Cherry Creek offers with more than 50 restaurants, making it almost impossible to choose and most definitely requiring a return visit. Whether your palate is yearning for a farm-to-table, multi-course meal by an award-winning chef, or a burger and locally brewed craft beer with a side of fries, you’ll find flavor profiles to satisfy every craving. One such sophisticated and stylish restaurant destination includes Local Jones inside the urban chic Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek. Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus.

Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. This four-story exhibition encompasses more than 75 unique installations, rooms and portals from 300 creatives. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked. The eight-story architectural marvel stuns with its dramatic façade, in part thanks to last year’s $175 million renovation project that expanded and reimagined the campus with new, dynamic spaces to explore. Denver’s open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured the “most attended music venue in the world in 2021” thanks to its fantastic and rare aesthetic, history, and milestone moments that propelled it into its status it holds today. Freely hike and roam this geological wonder on non-event days, but don’t miss an opportunity to watch a performance under the Colorado stars and see where The Beatles played in 1964 and U2 filmed Under a Blood Red Sky in 1983, an event that boosted the venue into the global spotlight. Finally, don’t miss the downtown district favorites RiNo and LoDo. Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet— blending urban charm and industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience. Visit Denver believes that travel makes the world a smaller and more connected place. It brings people together and fosters interaction among diverse cultures. We couldn’t agree more!
