April - Our Explore Issue! Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals it’s beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family like La Pergola in Millburn, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery—there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you, things you can explore both locally and out of town. This includes summer camps and activities for kids, artists Scott and Teresa Fischer. Scott is known for his artwork can be found in Dungeons & Dragons books, Magic: The Gathering cards, and in World of Warcraft. WENTWORTH GALLERY PRESENTS A TALENTED DUO

When Scott and Teresa Fischer met at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1994, his focus was on fine art and hers was on illustration. But after graduating, they sort of flipped their interests. Teresa is recognized for her whimsical fine art oil paintings, while Scott is best known for his art illustrations. He may have recognized his true calling as a child, though. “I actually wrote a paper in 4th grade about how I wanted to do the art for Dungeons & Dragons,” says Scott. He got his wish. Today, his artwork can be found in Dungeons & Dragons books, Magic: The Gathering cards, and in World of Warcraft and other blockbuster gaming enterprises as well. He’s also an instructor at the world-famous Illustration Master Class and SmArt School, inspiring and helping future generations of artists. He says there was never any doubt about becoming an artist. His mother, Marie Fischer, is also an artist, and her work hangs in galleries on Cape Cod. “I grew up in a very creative and supporting household,” says Scott. With a father in the Air Force, he and his family would move every three or four years. “At every new base, I would just draw to keep myself entertained and I found making art was a nice way to make friends as well.” Teresa also found companionship in art. “I was always a very creative kid,” she says. “I grew up in Indiana on a little family farm and there weren’t many kids around. I had to entertain myself with all my imaginary friends, but by the time I was in middle school, I really understood the power of drawing and painting and being able to put what was in my head on paper.” Many of her award-winning paintings are actually reminiscent of her childhood. “I just wanted to paint my bliss and paint what excited me,” says Teresa. “I'm really drawn to objects, so if you look through my artwork, you'll see that.”

She believes objects, especially nostalgic objects, have a story to tell, and she uses them as characters that come to life in playful visual stories. “I set the stage, kind of like setting the stage for a theatrical experience,” she says. In one of her paintings, she pays homage to Lyman Frank Baum, the author who penned the Wizard of Oz and so many other wonderful stories. She incorporated a hot air balloon and even flying monkeys into the scene! The couple, who have been married since 1996 and have a 19-year-old daughter, Sarah, reside in Belchertown, MA, but will soon be in New Jersey. Their incredible works of art will be on display at the Wentworth Gallery at Short Hills during the month of April, and, on April 30th, patrons will be able to meet them there. “When I saw that Wentworth was representing artists like Paul Stanley, Joe Satriani and Rick Allen who are literally rock stars I went to see at arenas - oh my God!” says Scott. “That, along with the gallery approaching me for fantasy art, speaks volumes.” Fantasy art in general has been exploding, he says, and the fact that Wentworth had that level of vision and wanted to embrace it was amazing. “Ask the people who grew up on Star Wars and on The Hobbit movies and all of that stuff. As they reach midlife, they want to touch the things that they loved as children and that’s exactly what we're doing.”

While in talks with Wentworth, Scott asked if they had seen his wife’s work; after viewing it, they realized they had a double hit on their hands. “It's a unique thing to have a husband and wife having a show at the same time,” says Teresa. Adds Scott, “I can't even tell you how rewarding it is for us to have a show hanging together in the same space with our diverse styles. It's really magical and something special.” “The fact is we want to get our work out there to the world and to the right people,” says Teresa. “My work has that little bit of lighthearted whimsy to it and Wentworth thought that would be perfect for their gallery. Bringing us together as a team was also something they knew their clientele would enjoy.” He and Teresa are looking forward to meeting the people who appreciate their artwork and will be thrilled to make some new fans too. FUTURE STARS SPORTS ACADEMY Are you ready for some football?! Future Stars Sports Academy in Madison is offering football camps this summer as well as all-sport camps, where kids in grades K - 8 can not only learn and play football, but try out soccer, lacrosse, and wiffle ball as well. “There will be a bunch of fun activities so kids can take part in all of them and maybe see which one they really like,” says founder and owner Ralph Sandello. What really makes Future Stars cool is that it’s partnered with the NY Jets. They have tons of giveaways and prizes such as signed footballs and apparel, and they even have professional NFL players come down to talk with the kids and coach. There’s also the opportunity to go to the Jets training camp or a preseason game, as long as COVID guidelines allow. “Coaching kids is really my passion, so I enjoy just being around them every day,” says Ralph, who grew up in Madison and is currently the Receivers and Safety football coach, the varsity basketball assistant coach, and the junior varsity lacrosse coach at Madison High School. “At Future Stars, we put a big emphasis on the kids having fun, so they’re not just standing around doing drills,” he says. “They’re learning and constantly playing games and winning prizes.” And since it’s flag football, there’s no contact and no risk, which parents really appreciate. SCHOOL OF ROCK If your kids want to get their jam on this summer, School of Rock has the best in performance-based music camps. Open to kids 3 1/2 to 12 years old, there’s something for every interest and musical ability.

It’s four- and five-day summer programs mirror its yearlong programs and are great opportunities for kids to try it out and see if music is really their passion and something they want to pursue. “Our summer camp sessions have always been a great vehicle for getting kids accustomed and exposed to our culture and how the School of Rock works,” says Art Lima, who along with his wife Jamie, has owned the Chatham location for the past 16 years. Kids not only learn to play an instrument and/or vocalize, but to perform these skills in front of an audience. There are also classes on songwriting where they learn how to develop and perform their own song ideas. Programs this summer include Rock Rookies, where kids can learn ear training, song structure, rhythm patterns and group playing; Little Wing Pre-School of Rock, which introduces little rockers to real rock band instruments and bands in a fun and playful way; Classic Rock Rewind which allows campers to learn and record the music of 60s and 70s rock icons such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones; and Songwriting & Performance, a program that teaches kids the skills to write their own songs and analyze some amazing compositions. SNAPOLOGY Once again, Snapology will be offering its fun and educational camps in the Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights areas. “We will run three-hour camps in the morning, but we're also going to offer afternoon camps as well,” says Sunny Sun, the owner of the Summit area location. “This will give parents more options.” Camps will be held on a weekly basis from June to the end of August, and themes will change each week.
