Being successful in business takes hard work and perseverance. Achieving that success as a young woman in a mostly male-dominated industry requires a whole other level of commitment. Real estate broker Michelle Pais, who at the age of 30 founded Signature Realty NJ in 2010 and knows this well. “We are one of the most successful independently-owned real estate brokerages in the state,” she says. “It’s a woman-owned brokerage and the Michelle Pais Group, which is a luxury division of Signature Realty NJ, was ranked number one in the state by Real Trends in 2019 under the medium size team category for both units and volume. 2021 has been our best year yet! I’m particularly proud of that because we’re independently owned and I’m one of the youngest, if not the youngest, broker that has achieved this level of success.” Michelle wants to inspire other women to achieve their own dreams and spends time as a mentor and coach. “They can compete and they can have a seat at the table. My advice - be true to who you are, do the right thing, and follow the Golden Rule, because all you have is your reputation.” She feels the most important element for success is mindset. “I always tell people that fear will hold you back, so you need to just ignore that voice inside you that says you can’t do it and go after your goals.” Surrounding yourself, as she does, with people who will uplift and support you is another key ingredient. She now has 350 agents and that number is constantly growing. In fact, Signature Realty NJ recently made the INC. 5000 list as one of the fastest growing companies in America! Michelle knows she wouldn’t have reached this milestone alone. In addition to her team, whose members she calls “a great group of dynamic individuals who have the ‘seek to serve mentality’,” she also gives thanks to her husband, Jonathan Steingraber, who runs the business alongside her. She and Jonathan support their agents in return. “We’re really big on training and teach our agents not to just become great agents, but how to become business owners, so we’re very much invested in their success.”

The couple also strongly believes in giving back in other ways. Michelle’s agency is the main sponsor of Be the Change, a nonprofit dedicated to feeding the homeless. “It’s something that’s really true to our hearts,” she says. “My husband and I come from extremely humble beginnings. We consider ourselves to be very fortunate, so anytime we have an opportunity to give back, that’s something we want to do.” Another way she hopes to bolster others is through her new book, Secretary to CEO, which outlines her journey while giving tips, tricks and important advice on becoming a successful business owner. “I had to learn and overcome obstacles and heartaches and I want to help other women navigate those challenges.” The title of the book reflects her own path. While in her early 20s, she worked as a secretary at a real estate office while putting herself through college with the goal of

pursuing a law degree. But, things changed quickly after she made her first sale. “I felt euphoric and I knew that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” she says. “I enjoy the process of helping people, of marketing their homes, and being able to get their homes sold for more money than they thought they would ever get.” Secretary to CEO is due for release this year. Michelle and her husband, who live in Morris County, have another new and exciting venture coming up - their own real estate show right here in New Jersey. Stay tuned for that! Even with all these accomplishments, Michelle says her biggest joy is being a mother to 19-month-old Madison Rose. “Being her mom is my greatest success story and my greatest achievement by far. So all the trophies, all the awards and all the recognition – nothing compares to that.”

She and Jonathan truly cherish family time. “We love taking mini-getaways,” she says. “We’re beach people so anything that has sand and sun is for us. In addition to that, we just love simple things. We like going to parks, taking afternoon strolls and going out to lunch.” Signature Realty NJ and the Michelle Pais Group currently have three office locations, Summit, Westfield and Somerset and have plans to open several more this year. But, being vegan is a whole lifestyle. Risha Walden, of Walden Interiors in Millburn, successfully and beautifully incorporates her vegan beliefs into her designs. “The biggest issue with interior design is that it’s not something people think about every day,” she says. “Most only think about those decisions maybe once every five to 10 years when they need to, say, buy a sofa.” Using vegan interior design strategies, explains Risha, does not diminish the aesthetic or how you want the room to manifest. And,

these design elements can be as luxurious as any other. “Luxury is about rejoicing in this paradise we’re in and to have that appreciation in your home. Your home should reflect the abundance you created for yourself.” As a vegan interior designer, she has never felt that she’s compromised a client’s design. “There’s so much available and it’s about being aware of it,” she says. “I’m always researching and finding new and innovative products.”

ALTERNATIVES TO LEATHER, WOOL AND OTHER ANIMAL PRODUCTS Alternatives didn’t come to be because they’re vegan, but because people are demanding high-performing, durable, stain-resistant, and fade-resistant fabrics. They want to be able to purchase something that they can put in their home that looks and feels good and that they don’t have to constantly maintain.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABILIT Y I’m always looking for durable fabrics for my clients such as polyesters and nylons. I understand that my clients want their homes to look as beautiful as possible for as long as possible and man-made fibers have that resistance and durability that frankly a lot of natural products don’t.

NATURAL IS NOT ALWAYS THE HEALTHIEST CHOICE Even though leather is natural and should therefore be compostable, it really isn’t because it’s treated with chemicals. Those chemicals are actually toxic and there is some off-gassing.

MIXING THE OLD WITH THE NEW I love to repurpose what people already have. When I go into a client’s home, we talk about creating the vision they want, and if I can reuse a piece – that can be reupholstering it, repainting it, or fitting it out for another use – I’m going to do it if it fits into the vision they want. I love old furniture because it’s usually better made or it’s something that’s important to them, maybe passed down from their grandmother, so there are many ways of reincorporated these pieces into the design. CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in

New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families. A perfect example of the kind of epically memorable, wonderfully simple recipes I grew up on is my Grandmother’s Eggless Caesar Salad. It’s bright with lemon and garlic, one or two secret ingredients, plenty of pecorino and parmesan cheese, and ultra-creamy despite no raw eggs! It’s one of my absolute favorite salads, so I made it into an IGTV recipe video about a year ago that has been viewed nearly 7.5 million times online. I get giddy every time someone shares a photo or video of them making it at home.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach

is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for

dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home.. I like to think my decorating melds are simple, elegant and polished with very plush, soft, round edges, and I love anything that feels handmade with a story to tell. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.
