LIFESTYLE LETTER
January Health and Wellness It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our community. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness, overall wellness, and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health, and love. If you have interesting, fun, and meaningful stories to share or are a business looking to grow within our community and the surrounding area, we would love to hear from you. Contact John.Meyer@lifestylepubs.com for marketing opportunities and Ana.Meyer@lifestylepubs.com for editorials or call us at 973-944-1440. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022! SPORTS MEDICINE: Sports injuries can happen anytime. Our 13-year-old, got hit by a baseball in his first game of the season that resulted in a bone fracture. When these things happen, it’s very important to be ready with the best medical care and options our area has to offer! Dr. Louis Rizio, is a talented and experienced sports medicine doctor and surgeon. He works with colleges in the area to prevent, protect and fix injuries. “I’m the head team physician for NJIT and KEAN University, in addition to my full-time sports medicine practice in Short Hills. I’ve also been working with NJIT’s Bio engineering department on STEM cell research for over 10 years. I also set up a student scholarship for life sciences at NJIT. I’ve been in practice for about 20 years. During my training I was responsible for taking care of the University of Miami athletics, worked with the Dolphins, the Marlins, etc.” Sports injuries include ligament tears, fractures to tendons, shoulder dislocations, ankle strains, elbow, and shoulder injuries from throwing, and its equal for boys and girls. “I figure out how to get the athletes to continue to participate and not get hurt. The window of opportunity is short in college. It’s only four years. If you miss a season, you can lose that whole year. We also manage pediatric sports injuries for high school age or younger kids. It’s not uncommon to see kids today with sports injuries. Kids play so much that they are at risk for both overuse and acute trauma.” Sports medicine isn’t just for kids. It’s for anyone who is active. We met Dr. Rizio when John needed treatment for his tennis elbows, and for the record, he doesn’t play tennis! Things break down with age. “I’m trained in specific orthoscopic technique. Orthopedics is the architecture for the body of medicine. It’s your muscular skeletal system, the foundation for everything that you do. It is the architecture frame of your person. Injuries can happen at any age. Things like tennis elbow, arthritis…knee replacements that can impact your ability to run, ski or take a fitness class… things that are affecting your quality of life, these are things that I help with.”
Dr. Rizio has three athletic boys. His wife is also a physician who he met while at her residency at Overlook. “She lived on the same street when we were at Rutgers, and we never ran into each other!” He’s a busy physician who dedicates time to his children. “I’ve been their baseball team coach, and more. I spend time on the road going to tournaments all over the country, baseball, and basketball. “
HEALTH AND WELLNESS “It’s a balance. I realize that the less I do, the less I can do. When I pick up my activity level, and keep my weight down, I have clearer thinking, and feel invigorated. I help my patients get active. There are ways of working around the injuries and age process to not injure yourself.” Experience counts. Dr. Rizio has been in practice for 20 years. “I can identify with my patients in different ways. I understand what it was like to be a young athlete. I find a way to keep them active.”
WHAT SETS YOU APART? “Having specific training on sport injuries and orthoscopic techniques. I help get the athlete back in a fast and safe way…understanding the actual sports and the athlete, I can devise a plan that works.” Orthoscopic surgery requires a small incision using an orthoscope camera for the surgery. “Some orthopedic doctors are not surgeons. I am both. I’m a sports medicine trained surgeon.” Dr. Rizio is a must visit for the young and not so young! We had a very positive experience. I encourage you to get to know him! Health & Wellness with Modern Acupuncture
MAKE IT A POINT TO INCLUDE THE ANCIENT ART OF ACUPUNCTURE IN YOUR 2022 WELLNESS CARE!
ARTICLE BY ANA MEYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED As part of your 2022 wellness plan, consider the 3000+ year old ancient treatment of acupuncture. Joan Arata, owner, of Florham Park’s Modern Acupuncture shared this with me. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at specific “acupoints”. These acupoints stimulate the nervous system, releasing endorphins, our body’s natural pain-killing chemicals, our natural healing abilities promoting both physical and emotional well-being. When the needle goes below the dermis, it sends blood to those points which carry nutrients and collagen, setting it for healing by receiving all those nutrients. It also allows our neuropathways to connect.

“People come because of back pain and to treat and prevent migraines. We offer both preventive and treatment care. Acupuncture can help treat arthritis, infertility, diabetes and weight loss as part of their normal medical treatments.” said Joan. Acupuncture can help with stress, anxiety, and depression. “Anyone that comes to Modern Acupuncture gets treated for stress in addition to the reason they came in. When you release that stress, you feel so much better, “said Joan. “We make acupuncture accessible and friendly. That’s why we’re in a retail space, not a medical building. We make it affordable by offering memberships or packages. We’re one of 50 locations nationwide. Your membership allows you to visit other locations. We will be adding cupping in our Florham Park location to release congestion in the muscles. Michael Phelps made it popular. It raises the blood to the surface.”
The acupuncturists, at Modern Acupuncture, are state licensed and nationally certified. Joan stated, “Every needle is disposable, one-time use. Each new package is opened in front of the customer. Your first session is about 45 minutes. Your regular treatments are about 30 minutes. The needles must be in for 20 minutes. “ Is it painful? Everybody is different. The needles are about the width of a human hair, don’t have sharp points, are very thin and flexible. For me, it felt like I tapped my skin with my fingernail for a second. “Only about 3% to 5% of Americans have tried acupuncture. For those it’s a last resort that are considering surgery. Acupuncture has a place in our everyday self-care.”, said Joan. Modern Acupuncture is offering January specials for our readers. Call 973.457.4467 and try it!

Kick the Excuses and
Get to Work!
New York Jets Kicker, Matt Amendola, insights on fitness and life. 24
F E AT U R E | FITNESS
Matt Amendola, NY Jets kicker, is a great guy with great insights to share on fitness, his path to the NFL and life. Here is what he had to say.
WHAT DOES HEALTH AND WELLNESS MEAN TO YOU? “Growing up as a kid, I would eat anything. I would eat pizza, fries, I was a little bit of a ‘chubber’ as a kid until high school and I thought, who do I want to be? I played soccer, started eating right and got active. My mom walks 5 blocks around her neighborhood. That’s her way of staying active. It’s a mindset. Waking up and being thankful that you’re here…that you’re walking, breathing, just being blessed…whatever you have going on in your day. Push yourself to be the best version of yourself. “
HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED? “I’m not here by mistake. I’ve worked hard to get to where I’m at. When I was a free agent… working to get to the next level…staying optimistic and being patient that something is going to happen. Maybe today is not the best day, what can I learn from today and how can I get better?”
WHAT IS YOUR WORK OUT PLAN? “Create your physique, what fits you the best. Granted, I’m a kicker and people may think legs is my favorite exercise and that’s not the case. Arms, shoulders…I didn’t want to step on the field and have the guys say, hey he’s a kicker… kind of scrawny, it’s cool to step on the field and be one of the guys. It’s good to get a full circuit in. I would recommend not working out until you’re a junior in high school because your body is still developing. Cardio is a great way to start it off. Having confidence is the biggest things you can do when you step into the gym. Showing up and doing your best.”
WHAT NUTRITION PLAN DO YOU FOLLOW? “When I was training, I was on a protein kick. I was doing a bodybuilder plan. I ate 200 grams of protein a day. All clean, chicken, tuna, broccoli. I ate oatmeal in the morning with peanut butter, almond milk, bananas, and blueberries. Lunch a 3 or 4 egg omelet with spinach and cheese… CONTINUED >

dinner pasta some days and others rice and chicken. It becomes a habit. They (the Jets) have us working on our own program. They’re looking out for my full safety. It’s about eating the right foods.”
HOW OLD WHERE YOU WHEN YOU GOT STARTED IN SPORTS? “I was 5 and played soccer. My parents got me into baseball, wrestling and then football when I turned 8. I always had a strong leg as a kid. I didn’t know a lot about football when I was 8 and played. In high school I played soccer and football. There was a camp for kicking in Pittsburg. I grew up in Philly. The camp was 4 hours from me. My dad said, ‘let’s just try this out, just go out there and do your best’, like he always tells me. I didn’t really want to go, I wanted to play soccer. I did really well. I ranked 7th in the country. My senior year, schools reached out and Oklahoma State gave me the opportunity. It’s amazing.”

JETS PLAY 60: The Jets Play 60 Flag Football Program encourages students’ participation in at least 30 minutes of physical activity in school and 30 minutes outside of school. It’s the largest in-school health and wellness program, empowering students, educators, and parents to work together to build healthier schools and communities. Matt is an active contributor.
ADVICE FOR KIDS: “Go out every day and keep chasing that dream. In the classroom, on the field, be the best version of yourself and have faith that you can do anything. Continue to strive. On and off the field, how do you carry yourself? Just go out there, have a good time and show great sportsmanship. I’m a big believer that when you do something good for someone else, it comes back to you. Be a good Samaritan. I think it’s cool to come out and show these kids that
anything is possible. I didn’t even know that I was going to be in this position. God puts us on an interesting path, and we got to go through adversity, at all ages. Kids ask, ‘can we make it to the NFL?’ Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.“
MATT’S LIFE ADVICE: “Always have something that you’re going after, whether it’s a job, or a goal, that you’re doing everything that you can to get there. Never doubt yourself. Be positive. Give glory to God, first and foremost, I wouldn’t be in this position without him. Take everyday with a purpose. “

WHAT DOES HEALTH & WELLNESS MEAN TO YOU?
WHAT NUTRITIONAL PLAN DO YOU FOLLOW?
“It’s a lifestyle. I encourage everyone to have a fitness routine. For my job, I must stay fit. I go to our gym at least three times a week. I do Yoga and Pilates outside of our gym, to stretch and for mindfulness. The brain is your most important muscle to perform. I try to bring balance, a combination of stretching, lifting weights and the mindfulness to be positive.”
“I’m a pescatarian. I eat a lot of seafood and maybe chicken two times a week. Healthy choices. If I have a cheat day, I may eat fried food or a dessert. I’m not super strict and count calories, just be mindful of what I put in my body.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT?
“My older brother played football. When I was 8, his coach said to me, ‘why don’t you play?’… I’ve been playing
“Core and cardio. You’ve got to train your heart. I do a lot of planking. I stretch in Yoga and Pilates to strengthen my core. I love HIIT training. I do a lot of running in the off-season and in-season. My advice cardio-wise…is your lift should be cardio. When I go to the gym, there is no cell phone, no breaks. I’m working hard for the entire hour. “
HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED? “When I’m at the gym with the guys in the weight room, we have music blasting, we’re competing, lifting weights. In football, we have to be really good athletes and we have to move our bodies in a certain way. I do different kinds of training to keep my body limber for football. It’s not just weights.”

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU GOT STARTED IN SPORTS?

football ever since, 22 years of my life! I played AAU basketball and traveled the country from 7th to 10th grade. Honestly, playing multiple sports is the reason why I’m an NFL football player today. If you only play one sport, you’re wearing out the same joints, and your body doesn’t last. Some of the best NFL players were drafted for different sports or didn’t play football until high school.”
YOUR BEST ADVICE: “Take things one step at a time. I went to a big high school. I was on the freshman team. I wasn’t on varsity and made varsity my sophomore year. Junior year, I was the starting quarterback. At Rutgers, I wanted to be the best player on the team. I was drafted by the New England Patriots in my third year of college. Here I am the captain of the NY Giants!” Logan also gives back. Check out the Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation (RARF.org).
