The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects the best. Every Christmas morning, we make pancakes for the kids shaped like reindeer, served with organic maple syrup while wearing matching holiday pajamas, including our two dogs, Lucky and Max. After breakfast, we all gather in the family room by the tree that the kids cut down at the tree farm, and decorated with us, and open our Christmas presents. As our kids get older, with Ben going to college next year, this Christmas is even more special as we celebrate family and love. What are some of your favorite holiday traditions? What traditions are you building with your loved ones? This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our area has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We are featuring Michael Bolton, who will be performing at the Morristown Theater on December 7th. We also wanted to share creative ideas to decorate your holiday table with amazing floral tablescapes to add a touch of holiday color and scent to your dining room holiday celebrations. We’ve also shared with you a great place to enjoy the magic of winter at the Mirror Lake Inn at Lake Placid, New York, great for the entire family or a romantic getaway. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. We wish you a very Happy Holidays Season and New Year!

Setting a table with fine china and silverware looks nice, but if you really want to make it extra special, add some flowers. Whether in a clear vase, a ceramic or wooden container, or even some pretty glasses, arrangements of colors, fragrances and other whimsical materials will complete the entire look. “Flowers always dress up a table and also create this freshness, this wonderful smell,” says floral designer and owner of Sahola Flower Fashion Boutique, Olga Sahraoui. “There are many varieties of flowers that can be used to create interesting designs. Don’t be afraid to experiment.”

For dining, it’s always good to go with a low centerpiece, she explains, so people can interact. Depending on the shape of the table, you can use a rectangular, square or round container or smaller, separate containers and fill them with seasonal flowers. These containers can be items you already have in your home such as ceramic mugs, silver bowls or wooden boxes. If you would rather do a high-scale arrangement, make sure you’re using a transparent container so guests can see each other and comfortably converse. For the holidays, Sahola will have various arrangements available that will fit any personality, taste, and occasion. For an elegant and modern look, Olga is using white roses and white tulips, plus silver ornaments to give it some sparkle, and a touch of holiday greens. These are all arranged in a simple, yet elegant, white ceramic base. “This is a very luxurious arrangement for those who want to dress up the table to really make it very special for the holidays,” she says. “It has a lot of richness and is perfect for a more formal occasion.” Another one of her holiday creations uses more traditional colors of reds and greens with berries and moss added in. “This would be for a more casual setting, so I’m using a wooden container. There are red roses, pinecones, ornaments, and some Christmas greenery.” It’s very nature inspired with a lot of texture and is perfect for more intimate settings with family and friends. For a totally different look, Olga is pairing three silver cups filled with Christmas greens, red ornaments and red and white flowers. “This setting would be for someone who wants to catch up with friends in the afternoon. It’s less formal and creates a relaxing mood.” It’s easy to incorporate different colors with floral arrangements, cloth napkins, plates and other tableware to change things up and have completely different dining looks for every occasion. The iconic Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown will be welcoming Grammy-award winning artist Michael Bolton on Wednesday, December 7, at 7:30 pm. Performing some of his most beloved classics such as “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “How Can We Be Lovers,” the audience will be able to see, hear and feel the music deep in their souls. Thanks to his many albums, including a Christmas album, fans can also enjoy listening to Bolton’s music all year long and wherever they may be. Here, this Connecticut guy shares more about his life and love for music. Tell me about some of your favorite holiday traditions. The best holiday gift is being able to be home with my daughters and grandchildren which doesn’t get to happen too often due to my constant tour schedule. But when we can all gather at my home in Connecticut it’s the most wonderful time of the year!! For your This is the Time Christmas album, how did you select which songs to include? Do you have a favorite? I tend to choose classics in much of my work because they run deep in the DNA of multiple generations and that familiarity of a song connects with people in a personal way that may carry the meaning of a time or place in their lives. It’s always a great feeling when the audience can sing along to the songs you’re performing. [Another popular song, It’s Christmas Time, was released in 2020.] For your Greatest Hits and Holiday Favorites show at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, NJ, this December, what songs are you most looking forward to performing? I always look forward to performing my hits because they’re what have fueled me and my career and what the audience has come to hear! Over the years many fans have shared with me how songs like “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” or “Time, Love & Tenderness” have marked

important moments in their lives or gotten them through tough times. So we get to share in that experience. And then there are just the feel-good songs that let people just get out of their seats and enjoy! After so many years of sharing your music with your fans, what do you love the most about performing? I love singing. It’s always been my first love. Stepping up to the mic and allowing my heart and soul to express themselves through music is the greatest gift for me. It seems like the world is finally starting to come back after COVID. As a performer, it must have been difficult to not be able to perform for a live audience. How did you keep your music alive while the world was shut down? It was very surreal and tragic for everyone in different ways. For me to get through and still fuel my creativity, I focused on songwriting and did many Zoom sessions to create songs for my new album. It was

great getting the time for that in spite of the reason. But we also managed to stay really busy shooting commercials and TV shows with COVID compliance protocols in place, and I started the writing and recording process for my new podcast. Of course, I’m absolutely thrilled to be touring again though it’s made finishing some of those other projects more challenging. How do you want people to feel when listening to your songs? The important part is that they feel! Whatever they feel is so personal to them but the whole goal is to move people emotionally. To connect. It’s almost going to be 30 years since you started Michael Bolton Charities. How has the mission of this organization changed and grown throughout the years, especially after COVID? What are a couple of the charitable organizations it supports that especially touch your heart? The mission hasn’t changed - we are focused on

providing support resources and interventions to assist women and children at risk of domestic violence. Over the years, we have realized that we also need to place focus on interventions that can reduce violent behaviors in the future. We are very proud of our Beyond Trauma Youth Music Therapy programs that help to reduce violent behaviors in young people who are exposed to violence in their everyday lives. We also helped establish a family justice center in New England. This one-stop-shop service and support to women affected by domestic violence provide relief at the right time in the right place. What is one thing you would like people to know about you that hasn’t been publicized, or that would surprise people? I’m actually a very shy guy! Tickets are on sale now at mayoarts. org. Unwrapping a small gift box can often bring great delight, especially when there’s something sparkly inside. Jewelry not only makes a beautiful gift, but it’s one people can enjoy for many years to come. It can even be passed down to future generations as heirloom treasures. “A piece of jewelry is often sentimental because it always reminds you of a special occasion, a special event, or a special person,” says Avni Patel, the owner of The Hera Jewelers in Summit. A third-generation wholesale jeweler, he selects stones and metals and combines them in gorgeous combinations. And if something in the store doesn’t meet a particular taste or style, he can design a custom piece that fits that person perfectly. “I had a customer come in from Texas and he wanted a ring with a Longhorn [cattle] design, and I completely customized it for him,” he says. Avni can also help customers pick out just the right thing for family members or significant others. “Many times, a man will come in and have no idea what his wife or girlfriend likes, so I ask if he’s comfortable showing me one or two pictures of her at a party or some other celebration. This way, I can see the type of jewelry she’s wearing. Is it big? Is it small? Is it blingy? Not too blingy?” Right now, he says, the trend is layering pieces of jewelry. “Women are wearing multiple necklaces, and they don’t have to be one color. They can be rose gold, yellow gold, and white all mixed and layered together—the same thing with bracelets. Many women don’t wear one bracelet anymore. They like to mix and match different shapes and different sizes.” If a woman comes in to purchase a piece of jewelry for the man in her life and is undecided, he again asks to see a picture. He’ll look to see what type of watch the gentleman has

on or if he wears cufflinks. “If he’s wearing a Rolex, is it an entry-level, or a more expensive piece? Are his cufflinks off the rack or are they custom-made? If he’s wearing cufflinks, you know he’s the type of guy who really pays attention to small details. I can then help them make a decision.” The Hera Jewelers continually has new stock, so if you stopped in a couple of months ago, there is now new merchandise to discover. “I continue adding new pieces to my collections every month or every couple of months, so my customers can always find something new in the store,” says Avni. For the holidays, there’s an entire collection of amazing pieces from an Italian designer who believes diamonds are a girl’s best friend. In just the way people have barbers for 20 years or go to the same doctor year after year, he wants to be his customers’ dedicated jeweler. “I want to have that rapport with people and their families and develop long-lasting friendships,” he says. “It’s never about making a one-time sale and calling it a day.” He says many customers will buy one piece, maybe a necklace, and then come in for a matching pair of earrings or a ring later. “Or they’ll pick up a pendant as a gift for Christmas, and then buy the matching bracelet for a birthday, to eventually build an entire set for the recipient.” This holiday, make your loved ones’ eyes sparkle with a gift from The Hera Jewelers. MIRROR LAKE INN RESORT & SPA Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa offers the best in luxury accommodations and unique experiences for its guests. Located in Lake Placid, NY, the Inn has been a popular destination since it opened in the early 1920s. Ed and Lisa Weibrecht, who bought the Inn in the mid-70s, has made major renovations over the years to provide up-to-date amenities and modern designs, while still keeping the classic Adirondack charm. For the last three decades, it has been given the AAA Four-Diamond Exceptional award, and it’s also a member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The Inn is beautiful all year round, but the holiday décor is really spectacular. This is when they go all out to provide a true winter wonderland full of holiday magic for their guests. “It’s a special place to be during the holidays,” says son Andrew Weibrecht, who, along with his wife, Denja, helps run the Inn. “My mother, Lisa, has decorated the hotel since the late ‘70s and she tries to outdo herself every single year. We have hundreds of thousands of bulbs and Christmas lights on the exterior of the property. We have Christmas trees throughout the lobby, the dining room, the living room, and everywhere else in between.” “Christmas here at the Inn has become a tradition for a lot of families, and they come every year, including one family for over 20 years, so it’s been great to see the different generations grow up over the years,” says Chris Jarvis, the director of rooms. Close to 70% of their business is either guests who have stayed with them before or those who have been referred. He adds, “Our goal is when someone leaves the hotel, we don’t want them to go home and just feel like they want to come back; we want them to feel

like they have to come back. We strive to provide our guests with an experience they don’t get anywhere else. A huge part of that is our staff. They’re warm, genuine and friendly and truly care about the guests’ experiences.” Adds Andrew, “Two of the most common compliments we receive are about the staff and the cleanliness of the establishment. We have always been obsessed with providing a clean, welcoming environment.” Guests are encouraged to pamper themselves at the European spa offering all types of massages and other upscale services. There’s also a salt room for salt therapy which encourages respiratory health. For dining, there are two restaurants on the property. The View, which is AAA Four Diamond rated and a Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winner, is their fine dining restaurant. The other is the Cottage Café, which offers more casual fare. Whenever possible, most of the food and drinks at the Inn are locally sourced. “We get a lot of our meats and produce from local farms, and a lot of the liquors and draft beers come from regional local breweries,” says Andrew. The Inn has 128 rooms that can comfortably accommodate couples as well as large families, and all have spectacular views. Guests may not be spending much time inside though; the Inn and the town offer plenty to do outdoors. “We have over seven acres, so we’re really driven to use every bit of it,” says Andrew. “We try to think of every little thing that people could want or need out of the holiday experience. It’s pretty magical.” Mirror Lake is also a hub of activity and is just steps from the Inn’s front doors. Every December, Lake Placid hosts the “Holiday Village Stroll.” Events include caroling, the lighting of the village Christmas tree, arts and crafts, a viewing of “The Polar Express” and a parade through Main Street featuring Santa Claus himself.

Lake Placid is unique in that it has hosted two winter Olympic games. During the winter, all of the Olympic venues are operational, and people have the opportunity to challenge themselves. “The Olympic arena, where the ‘Miracle on Ice’ game happened, is open, as well as the 1980 Olympic Oval,” says Andrew. “They have skating every night. The Nordic ski venue added snowmaking and is a fully operational world-class venue.” He adds, “We set it up so that we take the guest information and fit them right in the hotel so they can skip the lines and hassle of traditional rental outlets. We have everything ready and waiting for them in the morning.” Andrew knows all about skiing. He competed in three Olympic games and medaled in two in alpine skiing. In 2010 in Vancouver, he received the bronze medal, and in 2014 in Sochi, he won the silver medal. “His medals are on display at the front desk and guests like to have their pictures taken with them,” says Chris. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

These festive and colorful drinks blend the silky taste of white chocolate with a hint of peppermint, making them the perfect holiday cocktail to share with your friends and family!

W HI T E C H O C O L AT E P E P P E R MIN T M A R T INI INGREDIENTS • 4 ounces white chocolate liquor such as Godiva • 2 ½ ounces of vanilla vodka • 1 ½ ounces of peppermint schnapps • Crushed candy canes for garnishing the glass rim (optional) • Crushed ice INSTRUCTIONS Cocktail 1. Fill your cocktail shaker halfway full of crushed ice. 2. Pour in your white chocolate liquor, vanilla vodka, and peppermint schnapps. 3. Shake until well mixed. Candy Cane Rim 1. Spread the crushed candy canes evenly onto a large plate. 2. Wet the rim of a martini glass with water. Dip your martini glass rim into the crushed candy canes and spin the glass to coat the rim. 3.
