November - Thankful In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those that you love and encouraging giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories that we hope will bring you joy. We’ve included a Fall holiday recipe, stories of gratefulness, a great road trip to Rickets Glenn, and amazing people at Cheshire Home who help heal those impacted by spinal cord injuries. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our towns the vibrant communities that they are. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. We wish you a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving!

Stanley: End of the Road Starchild

Many of us remember when we first attended a concert and saw our favorite rock artist. Maybe we bought a t-shirt or a poster to bring home to remember the incredible experience. Now, Wentworth Gallery offers an amazing way to connect with some of our favorite rock and roll artists in an even more tangible way. “What really started it was when we began working with Paul Stanley from Kiss about 15 to 20 years ago,” says Christian O’Mahony, owner of Wentworth Gallery. “He’s very creative in a lot of different areas and artwork for him was therapeutic. He never really thought about it as a commercial venture.” When Christian saw his paintings and realized how talented he was, he wanted to represent him. “We started doing shows with Paul and they were immensely successful. A lot of people were buying his paintings, some without knowing who Kiss was or who were not really into the music. It was the artwork itself that really touched them.” Word got out and Christian started picking up other musical artists such as Michael Cartellone from Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rick Allen from Def Leppard. “From there we got Mickey Hart from The Grateful Dead, Brian Wheat from Tesla, Charlie Benante from Anthrax, and the late Ric Ocasek from the Cars. I have his only collection of artwork.” Christian has become the go-to person for successful musicians and even celebrities who have a passion for art and want to expand into this avenue. “First and foremost, they have to be good artists, and secondly, they have to understand that art shows are a little bit different than rock and roll meet and greets. They are more personal and much more intimate.” This is a major component of what makes Wentworth Gallery stand out. “It’s a combination of the art in some way touching them, but it’s also the incredible experience that somebody could have with someone they’ve admired artistically.”

So, if a customer were to purchase a painting done by, say, Rick Allen, either at a show or beforehand, when Allen comes to the gallery, they get to meet him. “They spend real time with him,” says Christian. “They might even have dinner afterward.” Wentworth has also offered private concerts for buyers. “I’ve done that with Paul Stanley and Rick Allen,” he says. “More recently, I’ve done it with one of my new artists, legendary solo guitarist Joe Satriani. If you’re a fan of Joe and you really like his artwork, you not only get a beautiful painting, but you also get to sit through a private concert. Or, if you purchase one of his paintings on a guitar, perhaps you would actually go up on stage with him and jam. “We offer these lifetime experiences. So, it’s not just a beautiful painting on a wall; it actually has a story behind it.” Wentworth Gallery has 10 galleries up and down the East Coast, and Christian plans to

have more incredible shows coming up in the next year at the Mall at Short Hills location. “I expect Rick Allen, Paul Stanley, and Joe Satriani all to make appearances.” Artwork, he says, is a lifetime acquisition. “It’s different than buying a shirt or a pair of pants. It’s for you; it’s for your family.” And, it can be acquired by people of all backgrounds; it’s not just for the wealthy. “We have many different price points, and we also offer 24 months interest-free financing with no money down to make it affordable for almost everybody.” One of the reasons why many Wentworth Gallery locations are in malls, he explains, is that he wants people to feel comfortable coming in. “When people are walking down a street and see an art gallery, they might feel intimidated. So, we try to take down the walls and not have people feel like they need an art degree to walk in.”

Another factor that makes Wentworth stand out is its white-glove service. “When you’re at a gallery and something catches your eye, you might have a hard time envisioning what it would look like in your house,” says Christian. “You don’t know if it’s going to be too big or too small. You don’t know if your spouse is going to like it.” In order to make the decision easier, Wentworth offers what they call a Home Show. “We bring the artwork within 25 miles of any of our galleries without any financial obligation. We can also hang them for you, and at that point, you can decide which pieces, if any, you would like to purchase. It really takes away the anxiety.” They will also come and hang the piece if you just purchase it from the gallery.

FALL ROAD TRIP TO RICKETTS GLEN DISCOVER A HIKER'S PARADISE IN ONE OF PENNSYLVANIA'S MOST SCENIC LOCATIONS ARTICLE BY STACY GRAEBNER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Fall Trail at Ricketts Glen State Park

30

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | TRAVE L

RICKETTS GLEN If you are looking for a fall road trip that is a bit out of the ordinary, Ricketts Glen State Park is the perfect day trip for hikers, nature lovers and families in search of a mini adventure. Located in Benton, PA, northwest of Wilkes-Barre, and approximately 2.5 hours from our area, the park is often described as one of the most idyllic areas in Pennsylvania. The 13,000-acre park contains over 28 miles of gorgeous hiking trails where visitors can experience lush forests and diverse wildlife. But best of all, and what makes the park truly unique, is that it is home to a stunning 22 free-flowing waterfalls all of which can be easily seen in one day. The sheer number of falls visible within a 5-mile radius has helped the park earn its reputation as the ultimate waterfall experience in the eastern United States.

PARK HISTORY Ricketts Glen’s waterfalls were the main attraction for a local hotel from 1873-1903, and the park itself is named for the hotel’s proprietor, U.S. Army Colonel Robert Bruce Ricketts who was a Civil War artillery officer and businessman. Ricketts owned 80,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania which he intended to harvest for timber. However, when hikers in the area began to discover numerous falls on the land, he preserved much of it, building trails along the falls to attract local tourists to his hotel. After his death, Ricketts’s heirs began selling the land to the Pennsylvania Game Commission and in 1930 the area was approved as a national park. World War II curtailed those plans, but eventually, in 1944, the falls’ land was turned over to the

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to create a state park. The state continued to purchase additional land around the falls until the park was fully established.

TRAILS The most popular hikes at Ricketts Glen are along the Falls Trail which boasts breathtaking waterfalls at virtually every turn. Nearly all of the park’s 22 falls can be seen via a 7-mile loop which takes approximately 3.5 to 5 hours to complete, leading hikers through huge rock formations and past the majestic Ganoga Falls, the highest waterfall in the park, at 94 feet. The more tranquil falls range in height from 10 to 40 feet but are just as impressive. While most visitors find the hike to be only moderately challenging, some visitors note that the trail has a few tricky areas, with steep steps and drop-offs, occasional slippery or muddy areas, and uneven terrain. The full loop is recommended for people who are in fairly good physical condition (so hit the elliptical or do a few extra squats at the gym before you go!) and for families with older children. There is also a shorter 3.2-mile loop along the Falls Trail that still allows hikers to experience most of the falls. For less adventurous hikers or families with young children, there are also several relatively easy (but equally scenic) trails. Evergreen Trail offers leisurely walking paths and Adams Falls which is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the park. It is located just a few steps from the Evergreen parking area making it ideal for a quick visit.

OTHER AMENITIES Ricketts Glen is also home to Lake Jean, a serene 245-acre lake with a 600foot beach area that is perfect for relaxing or having a picnic after a long day of hiking. Fishing is allowed at the lake which contains warm water game fish, panfish and trout. Swimming and boating are also allowed during the summer season, with rowboats, paddleboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards available for rental. For those looking for an extended visit, campsites and cabin rentals are available at reasonable rates. The park is open 365 days a year from sunrise until sunset and offers free access to both the trails and the beach. Though you may remember that catchy TLC song from the 90s that warned us “Don’t go chasing waterfalls”, with outdoor activities galore and spectacular scenery, Ricketts Glen is worth the chase!

32

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | TRAVE L

TIPS LIST RICKETTS GLEN 1. Plan to arrive early in the day. The trails can become somewhat crowded in the afternoon, especially on weekends. The Lake Rose parking lot offers the closest access to the Falls Trail but fills up quickly during peak times. 2. Wear real hiking shoes or shoes with good tread. The trails are steep at times and the terrain can be uneven or slippery in places. 3. Stop by the visitors center for a map and information about the best way to navigate the trails so that the easiest part of your hike (i.e. the downhill portion!) is on your return. 4. Plan on bringing water, snacks, and/or lunch as you will most likely be spending several hours, if not most of the day, in the park. 5. The best time to visit the park is after a rainfall when water levels are higher, and the falls are more dramatic. If you are looking for something closer to home and a little less adventurous, discover Newtown, Pennsylvania, located about an hour’s drive from us, you will fall in love with their great choices of restaurants, shopping and a blend of historical colonial and modern architecture. From Tragedy to Triumph BRINGING HOPE AND INDEPENDENCE TO THOSE WITH SPINAL CORD INJURIES ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY

Spinal cord injuries can happen to anyone at any time. Learning to cope with losing one’s independence and then working to gain some of it back takes a lot of hard work and perseverance. Cheshire Home in Florham Park has been providing services to support these journeys since it opened its doors in 1981. “I don’t think people realize that most of our residents were living normal lives before their accidents,” says Cheshire Home Marketing & Event Manager, Betsey Burgdorf. “They had jobs, drove cars, cared for their families, and then a tragic event occurred leaving them in a wheelchair sometimes for the rest of their lives. It has a dramatic effect on the individual, the family, and the community.” Spinal cord injuries, she says, can happen in numerous ways. “We have two residents who dove into the surf at Long Beach Island, hit sandbars and broke their necks. We have a landscaper who fell out of a tree, and residents who have been in car or motorcycle accidents. We also have residents with genetic issues such as spina bifida and lupus.” Cheshire Home strives to meet the needs of all its residents, mostly young adults, who suffer from spinal

cord injuries, and/or neurological impairments. Its staff works tirelessly to help residents reclaim their independence so they can leave the facility and rejoin the community. “We are a transitional facility, which means residents are here while they recover,” says Betsey. “We focus on teaching residents skills they will need in order to regain their independence.” This can take up to on average two-three years, sometimes longer. Cheshire Home offers 24/7 nursing care, experts specializing in spinal cord and neurological impairments, and on-site physical and occupational therapy and more. “We work with residents on their goals, such as gaining muscle strength, and hand movement,” she says. “There is always a plan in place, and when setbacks occur, adjustments are made to keep the resident on track.” Some residents who had limited or no use of their arms and hands have regained function by the time they leave, which is seen as a huge success. Having these types of resources, explains Betsey, is one of the main reasons why Cheshire Home is so successful. “We had one gentleman CONTINUED >

who was involved in a car crash in his early twenties and almost ended up in a nursing home. His family was relieved when a bed opened and he came here instead. He moved out after about 3 years at Cheshire Home, and now lives in Madison and has a full-time job. He’s really one of our great success stories.” She said one of the biggest obstacles to integrating people back into the community is wheelchair-accessible accommodations. “With the disability laws, things have gotten easier, but there are still a lot of barriers.” For example, curbs and steps in front of businesses are often insurmountable and things most able-bodied people do not even notice. Everyday operating costs for these specialized services do not come cheap, so the nonprofit holds many fundraisers, such as 5K races, Cheshire Has Talent, and a paper shred, to provide the care the residents need to reach their goals. Their upcoming 40th Anniversary Gala fundraiser being held on Thursday, November 10, at the Park Avenue Club in Florham Park, will be an inspirational evening with dinner, dancing and motivational speakers. The Gala’s Master of Ceremonies will be Senator Jon M. Bramnick, and four deserving honorees, including Senator Declan O’Scanlon, Jr., who will be speaking about their support of those with spinal cord injuries. Tickets are available now at cheshirehome.org/gala. To find out more about Cheshire Home and how to help support its mission, go to cheshirehome.org/.

Thank f ulness and Gratit ude John and Ana Meyer

This year as we think about our Thankful issue, we are very thankful to celebrate our second-year anniversary as publishers and owners of the Chatham + Short Hills City Lifestyle magazine and our latest addition now six months young, Morris City Lifestyle. I always feel it’s important to wake up every day with a sense of purpose. It fills you with happiness, and a warm feeling of accomplishment to do what you love every day. For us, it is raising our kids, enjoying the craziness of being active parents, engaging with our local communities and readers, and running our publications. As we look back at our journey, we are very grateful for the amazing people we have met, a blend of our advertising partners, the exceptional products, and services that they offer to our local community members, the rooted relationships that they have with you, stories that they share about you, memories that have made throughout the years of service. We are also grateful for you, our dedicated readers for welcoming us into your homes, your emails, calls, and in-person compliments mean the world to us! Here are some things I’ve learned throughout our journey. You’ve shared with me that “we always learn something new”, and “we keep your issues on our coffee table for a long time”. I learned that sometimes a fitness story is more than about fitness. We featured two NFL players in our January issue, both asking about their journey

and their NFL fitness routines. We received a wonderful and surprising email from a private school teacher where she shared with me that from our article on Matt Amendola, former kicker of the NY Jets, she had extracted “22 life lessons” she was going to share with her students! We learned that our stories travel near and far. We received requests as far as Las Vegas asking for copies of our Premier issue that featured Paul Stanley’s Guitar 4 artwork on the cover and story from the Wentworth Gallery. We met local celebrities like Ben Bailey that grew up in Chatham, and lives in Morristown, and when he drives by his childhood home, he takes pride that the house number he made in woodshop is still up and can be seen from the street. We are grateful for doctors that provide the latest technologies including sports medicine doctor and surgeon Dr. Louis Rizio who stays on top of the latest innovative technologies and has helped John with his tennis elbow, even though he never played tennis! My kids say I yell too much and that I have a hearing problem. I am thankful for Dr. MaryAnne Pladdys, who graciously tested me, and confirmed, it was my kids simply annoying me, and that my hearing was perfect! I am grateful for that! I discovered that we have amazing entrepreneurs with hearts who provide a unique selection of high-end products and expert service you won’t get CONTINUED >

at a big box store, like Window Works in Livingston, Cove Carpet in Summit, GPS Plumbing showroom in Morris Plains, and Pool Boss’s luxury pools. Local bakeries and restaurants like Splurge, Casa Das Natas, Calabria’s Restaurant and La Pergola who take amazing pride in the quality of ingredients and treat you like family! I learned that Cooperman Barnabas and Atlantic Health, hospitals where our three kids were born, are more than just hospitals, they are centers of health excellence that also offer classes, and innovative treatments and win top awards in their industry. I grew up in a family-owned business where the mailman would get off his shift, bring coffee to my dad and hang out with him in his TV repair shop. I learned that there is still a sense of “main street” and that our local business in town share this similar experience with you. They tell us stories about our community members, and the quality and meaningful relationships they have established with you. We love what we do! We are grateful for all of you! We look forward to another year of service, fun and friendships with all of you who welcome us into your homes each month, and to our advertisers for your dedication and support in providing the best to our communities, your products and services and your partnership in our publications! As always, like I write every month in our editor’s letter, if you have any stories you would like to share with us, or content you look forward to reading, please let me know at ana.meyer@citylifestyle.com. If you own a business and would like to be part of our publications, reach out to John at john.meyer@citylifestyle.com . Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We look forward to seeing you around town!
