For our “Food and Drinks” issue, I’m sharing the best-kept secrets of Spain! My family is from Spain. I spent many summers there and attended college in Barcelona for a year. Although the towns have grown, what stays the same is the amazing culinary experiences you will find from the local cafe to the most elegant restaurant in these amazing cities! First stop Bilbao, Spain. This gorgeous Basque coastal town is a must-visit. Originally known for its shipbuilding industry, “La Gran Ria”, the river that runs through the town has transformed into the waterside social hub filled with access to restaurants, shops and the Guggenheim designed by American Architect Frank Gehry. The museum’s design is meant to resemble colliding ships, an homage to Bilbao’s history. Visit “Café Iruña”, established in 1903, has the original tiles, millwork and warmth of the original built. The main meal in Spain is around 2:00 pm. Be sure to ask for “El menu del dia” (menu of the day) which provides three choices of a first entrée, plus a second entrée, dessert and includes, beer, wine, or bottled water, all for only around $20 dollars per person. cafeirunabilbao.net Next, “Bar Arantzale”, a clifftop bar located in a traditional fisherman’s town and dine with the locals. No tourists here. Here, order their traditional regional rice “Arroz del Senoyoret”, it’s like a paella, but with a tomato savory base and seafood, no chicken or chorizo here. Available at “La Terraza”, beach front restaurant where the “menu of the day” is $22 per person. Enjoy your meal while taking in the beach views and people walking by on the promenade. In the evening, the social life continues until late, with bar-café style locations crowded with locals and tourists enjoying the traditional last meal of the day, typically around 10 pm. At “La Tapita” you can order a “caña rubia”, a blonde beer or wine, and you get a “pincho” (single serve appetizer) free with each drink for only $2.60 each! Final stop, Barcelona Spain, filled with centuries of rich Catalan culture, home of artist like Picasso, Miro, the 1992 Olympics, and of course the works of Antonio Gaudi. You will love the architecture, old and new, the food, shopping, and hospitality. For an upscale dining experience, visit “Disfrutar” in Barcelona which boast of having two Michelin Stars, voted the best of Barcelona yearly and ranked in third place as the world’s top 50 restaurants in 2022. On the opposite side of your culinary adventure, be sure to visit “La Boqueria”, this famous market located off La Rambla, it’s a must visit for locals and tourists. In this indoor food market you will experience food stands, offering a variety of local vendors selling their top rated “Jamón Ibérico”, seafood bowls you can eat while you are walking around, sample and purchase classic treats like Spanish “turrón” (Spanish nougat bar) with unexpected flavors and options made with pistachios, or Bailey’s liquor and more. Forty years ago, Calabria Restaurant & Pizza opened in Livingston by owner Gabriella Ottaiano’s father Dino and uncle Tony. From their delectable upside-down crunchy thin pizza to eggplant parm, Calabria’s made a reputation for authentic Italian food, and fresh ingredients, and is the first name I think of for pizza worth traveling for. However, like many restaurants, the Covid-19 pandemic threatened Calabria's long-lasting tenure. In walked Barstool Sports founder and CEO Dave Portnoy; Portnoy, notorious for his “One Bite Pizza Reviews”, where he tastes and rates pizzas from all over the world, had awarded Calabria’s “Crunchy Thin Pizza” a staggering 8.9 out of 10 which ignited a frenzy for loyal Barstool fans to taste Calabria’s pizza. Gabriella recounts their website crashing, 645 orders the next day, and a yearlong police presence needed at Calabria’s. Calabria’s pizza was in such demand, that they began distributing through Gold Belly, a food delivery service where customers can order food from their favorite restaurants nationwide. The Barstool Pizza Review was life-changing for Calabria’s and established a relationship between them and several Barstool employees; some of which, “The Barstool Units” Coach Duggs and Frank The Tank came into Calabria’s to make pies with the help of Stu “The Source” Feiner with all proceeds going to The Barstool Fund: a non-profit supporting small businesses hurt by the pandemic. Even before the life-changing pizza review, Calabria’s had a history in charity. Despite being forced to close during the pandemic, the Calabria team quickly took action to support their community. Calabria offered and donated over 10,000 special family meals, to feed families of 6, during the pandemic. Gabriella took things a step further with the restaurant's “No Questions Asked Policy” when she posted on her local Facebook group, “If you are not working/not getting a paycheck/struggling to make CONTINUED > OCTOBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . INGREDIENTS: • 2 bottles of Rioja Spanish red wine • 1/2 cup brandy • 2 oranges, one juiced and one diced • 1 diced green apple • 1 peach diced • 1 diced lemon • 1 cinnamon stick • optional sweetener: sugar or simple syrup to taste • optional bubbles: club soda or lemon-lime citrus flavored soda INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Wash all fruit, core, and dice. Combine wine, brandy, fresh orange juice, diced orange, apple, peach, lemon, and cinnamon stick in a large glass pitcher and stir. 2. Taste and if needed, add in a few tablespoons of sugar or simple syrup. 3. Cover the glass pitcher and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes or up to 4 hours to let the flavors blend. 4. Serve the sangria over ice. You can top off each glass with a splash of bubbly club soda or lemon-lime citrus flavored soda if desired for a little extra fizz and flavor. 5. Garnish with citrus or mint leaves.

The Winery Train by Delaware River Railroad Excursions is a unique, fun, and relaxing day trip. The 90-minute scenic steam engine ride starts from Lehigh Junction Station in old town Phillipsburg, smoothly moving through the beautiful autumn scenes of the Delaware River and passing bucolic farmland and quaint small hamlets. By a passionate and knowledgeable group of volunteers, you’ll be taught the history of the railroad and steam engine. Upon arriving at your destination, you’ll be picked up by a bus and driven up the hill to Villa Milagro. On this shorter ride, owner Steve will share the rich history of the surrounding area and farm. At the top of the hill, with the lovely vintner’s residence in front of you, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of four counties in two states, lush and beautiful vineyards, and abundant sunlight. Just imagine the turning leaves and the hills’ deep autumn hues—beautiful! You’ll get a crash course on how Villa Milagro makes its wine and what makes its vineyard the perfect spot to grow grapes. Then, you will sample wines paired with hot hors d’oeuvres before you make your choices of wines to buy. You’ll spend about an hour there, but this is just the right amount of time to enjoy everything the winery offers before boarding the return bus to your train. The all-inclusive wine train experience costs $40 per adult, and given the experience I had, it is well worth it. To make things even better, you can pack your own lunch to enjoy with your wine on the train ride back. How lovely! If you’re looking for a place to unwind, Villa Milagro is certainly the place for you. You can also drive to the vineyards directly, sit back and enjoy some live music, and treat yourself to a wine tasting of Villa Milagro’s signature wines available on weekends. Along with incredible apple pies with flaky, buttery crusts and pecan and pumpkin pies with graham cracker crusts, there are plenty of other options. “We're going to be doing a monthly cookie, so for October, we’ll have decorated Halloween cookies, and in November, we’ll have Thanksgiving cookies,” says its owner, Julie Winer. Do-it-yourself cookie kits will also be available so kids (and adults) can enjoy creating their own unique fall cookies. They come with icing, sprinkles and other candy decorations. These kits will also be available for fundraisers this year. Of course, fall cake buddies will also be available. “We actually have a whole series for Halloween, but our number one seller is our witch.
