HIGH-PERFORMANCE DRIVING EXPERIENCES PUT YOU BEHIND THE WHEEL

FOR FATHER’S DAY, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX AND ONTO THE TRACK. Monticello Motor Club, located in Monticello, NY, offers adrenaline-pumping driving experiences on its premier automotive playground. MMC has a 4.1 mile road track, including a 3.6-mile Full Course circuit with 18 turns and 450 feet of elevation changes. “People love it,” says Marketing Manager Suzanne Forni Gonzalez. “It’s so unlike anything they’ve ever done. A lot of people haven’t had the experience of driving on a track and testing out a car’s full potential.” Taste of The Track and the Porsche Taycan Experience are two great packages they offer, and no experience is necessary. “Taste of the Track is a full-day experience and is a perfect glimpse of what it’s like to be a member of MMC because you get to sample different areas of the Club,” says Suzanne. “You’re on the track for quite a bit of the day with a private instructor, and then you’ll do some go-karting. You’ll also get a tour of the private Club and have lunch.”

DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK (CONTINUED)

The Porsche Taycan Experience is a half-day offering where participants get to drive a fully-electric Taycan on track. As drivers, they’ll learn how to handle the car’s potential, which can reach 60 mph in under three seconds. Finish off the day with a Full Course hot lap with a professional driver at the wheel. Monticello Motor Club has a variety of vehicles for use, such as a BMW 240i, a BMW M2 Competition, a Porsche 911, a Mini John Cooper, and a fully-equipped M2 racing car. The Club also allows people to use their own high-performance vehicles. The on-site clubhouse serves breakfast and lunch, and also has a make-yourown sundae bar. “We have a kitchen staff who work magic and our chef is Culinary Institute of America trained,” says Suzanne. “We have a full locker room with showers and a members’ garage for storage of private vehicles. We also have concierge services so if our guests need help with where to go or what to do, we can assist with that. “Most of our Members and guests are very busy people, and when they’re here, they can just let go of everything. All they’re thinking about is the car and what their next move on the track is going to be.” MMC is typically open from mid-April through mid-November, and shuts down for the winter except for members taking part in snow driving and off-road activities. The Club is popular with people of all ages, and members include a good amount of women and teens. “We’re like a new-age golf club; we have our own driving range, which is 4.1 miles of race-grade asphalt.” To find out more and to give dad a thrill this Father’s Day, go to https://www. monticellomotorclub.com/.

ARTIST’S PALETTE

CAPTURING THE PLAY ARTIST MARK KANNELL HAS CAPTURED ALMOST EVERY ICONIC ATHLETE IN PAINT, ON JERSEYS, FOOTBALLS,

HELMETS,

AND

EVEN SNEAKERS. Some of these athletes have bought these amazing paintings for themselves. “I used to draw athletes while in college and liked to get them autographed at card shows or autograph signings, so that’s when I started getting into sports,” says Mark. He never really thought of it as a career until he received a commission from Sports Express, a store that was located in Livingston, for a painted jersey featuring Patrik Elias, who played for the NJ Devils at the time. After others saw his work, he started to get more and more sports commissions. “Tom Brady is one that I’ve painted many times, and he owns one of the painted jerseys,” says Mark. “Shaquille O’Neal is another who owns one. I’ve also done a lot of paintings of Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali.” Other pieces includes Derek Jeter, Patrick Mahomes, and Eli Manning.

autographed footballs and helmets as well. “I started doing some research about it,” he says. “I used different paints to see what would work best. For example, I use a leather paint because it’s more flexible.” While painting, Mark uses extremely high-resolution images of moments in history, like Derek Jeter’s 3000th hit, as his guide. “People tell me I have the ability to capture every detail. For example, if I’m doing a painting of a player and see little holes in his jersey, I’ll add those in, whereas many artists may not. And people also tell me I’m able to capture faces really well.” Besides athletes, Mark has also painted music personalities, such as Carrie Underwood, on another unique medium. “I started selling a lot of music paintings to charity auctions and was commissioned to paint on guitars,” he says. “I did a few Taylor Swift guitars last summer and was told that she was going to autograph them. I’ve also painted Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, and Mick Jagger, all on guitars as well.”

Mark also does live painting. “I’ll bring an easel and set up a jersey and paint live at an event. People can come up and see it and if they want to commission something, they can do that.” You can see Mark’s incredible pieces at Legends Gallery in Chatham, on Instagram and in videos on TikTok. His work has also been featured in a story on Entertainment Tonight and has been shared on many major social media pages such as the Bleacher Report, Complex, and CBS Sports. He has also been hired by EA Sports to create original paintings of football players for Madden NFL’s social media outlets. YOU DON’T NEED TO LEAVE THE STATE TO ENJOY A FUN AND RELAXING GETAWAY WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Located in Egg Harbor City, Renault Winery Resort & Golf, owned by VIVÂMEE Hospitality, is one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in the United States. “VIVÂMEE is two French words we put together to mean revive the soul, which is our whole mission,” says Melanie McCallen, chief creative officer and self-described dreamer. Her husband, Josh, is the CEO and president. “We want everyone to come and have fun, but we also want them to feel revived. That’s the real goal.” She explains that they and their employees do this through three core values – joy, humility and ministry. “We always say that we can bring a

cent of the areas in Champagne, France. “Our focus is to create fun in people’s lives and still hold on to tradition,” says Melanie. “This place has been growing vines for 156 years and we always want to embrace its agriculture.” The entire property is a feast not only for the soul, but also for the eyes. In addition to the French-inspired vineyards, there is a lovely pond. Next to it, there will soon be a rotation of artisanal vendors selling clothing, jewelry, spices, honey and more. To taste the wines made from the vineyards grapes, order a wine flight at the table and a server will come and do a presentation. “That’s exciting and leads to one of two things, or both,” she says. “A bottle of wine ordered for the table, and a likely enrollment in our Wine Club Membership, which is really exploding. A lot of people can join wine clubs all over the place, but not all wineries have what we have.”

There are two different membership packages – one where members receive a selection of three bottles of wine quarterly, and another where they can choose their own three bottles. And any purchases of wine after that are discounted. There are also many other perks, such as discounts on golf and hotel stays. “We also do special promotions,” says Melanie. “We have a Wine Club Members lounge and priority reservations for Wine Club Wednesdays.” For golf enthusiasts, its Vineyard National Golf Course is just spectacular. “It’s a lot of fun, and from what I hear, it’s one of the best golf courses around. And everyone loves the view from the 7th hole. The tee box is raised up on a platform so you can hit over the vines and from that perspective, you can see the full winery. It’s the most breathtaking view and you may ask yourself, ‘Where am I?’ because you suddenly feel like you’re in Europe.” For dining, guests can sit on the Champagne Garden Patio, reserve a fire pit, or go inside to the tasting room. Full service is available in all, and entrees range from casual fare to fine dining. There will also be a French pastry market opening soon. For guests who would like to stay overnight, the Château Hotel has newly renovated and lovely rooms, including a two-story suite. In warmer weather, there are also two pools to enjoy. Plans are in the works to expand the hotel to include a huge spa on the first floor and a larger outdoor pool as well as an indoor pool. There’s something for everyone at the winery. Country Music Sundays are very popular, and at the end of every month, they offer a girlfriends’ getaway. So come out for a visit and revive your soul. And of course, have a glass of wine!

LET’S TELL THEIR STORIES

They're I n s p i r at i o n a l ! THE ROUTE TO IMPACTING LIVES DELIVERING SO MUCH MORE THAN NEWSPAPERS When COVID-19 shut down the world, Greg Daily, the owner of Frames on Main in Chatham framesonmain.net and a long-time West Windsor newspaper delivery man, put his unexpected free time to good use. “It all started with a simple phone call I received from one of the seniors on my route,” says Greg. “She called to ask if I could throw the newspaper closer to the house. A couple of days later I happened to be standing in my local grocery store and she popped into my head, so I called to see if she needed anything.” After that, he put a note into every one of his customers’ papers offering his shopping services for free. “Before COVID, I never went to the grocery store, so I took on something I was very unfamiliar with,” he says. “The first person to call me was Linda Contiliano, and this is how I knew this was meant to be.” When Greg was a teenager, her husband Ross was his baseball coach and gave him the stability he needed at a difficult time in his life. It was his chance to pay it back. At this point, he’s not even sure how many families he’s helped; he stopped counting at 145. He now has 12 volunteers, including those from his own family. He even continued helping after losing his mother to COVID-19 in December. For his tremendous service to others, he was named one of Time magazine’s Heroes of 2020. “I get so much more out of this than the people I’m helping. It completes my day on a very positive note.”

JUNIORS FORE GORYEB FUNDRAISER HELPS SUPPORT CHILDREN UNDERGOING MEDICAL TREATMENTS Having parents who are big advocates for community service, plus being diagnosed with an illness himself, has inspired 18-year-old Chatham resident Cole Ekert to make a difference. And what a difference he has made! He, along with teens Brendan and Charlotte Binder, Sydney and Whitney Lapper, have raised almost $70,000 since 2018 for the Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center. These funds have been used to update Mickey’s Garden, a serene and peaceful play space, to purchase a video gaming system, and to help support the hospital’s Calling All Kids program. This year, proceeds will go towards creating an oversized sea-themed mural in the pediatric cancer center. “When I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, it was the perfect segue into helping Goryeb and Morristown Medical Center overall because I could use one of my hurdles to benefit the hospital,” says Cole. His advice to other teens: “If you have an idea to help, just go for it. There will always be people who will support your initiative, and somebody needs to be a pioneer so there’s no reason to not lead the charge!” This year, the Juniors Fore Goryeb Fundraiser will be held on June 2 at the Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham. LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)

LOUIE THE LAMP WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT ON BROADWAY, TURN ON YOUR PERSONAL LIGHT BULB When the lights went out on Broadway, the light bulb turned on for Jesse Hancox. Literally. Jesse, a lighting technician for Broadway’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, worked long hours, six days a week. The necessity to replace his income sparked Jesse’s creativity into a new business; making custom art out of gas pipe, steampunk style lamps which he had never created before! How? Jesse’s wife saw an expensive steampunk lamp she liked, and he decided to create his own version as a birthday present for her. Jesse made a figure holding an umbrella made from wire mesh, which he called “Louie”. He simply posted a photo in a group chat to show friends what he was up to. Serendipitously, a friend showed it at a party, and someone asked, “Can he make me one, and how much?” Jesse’s new business was born! Since August of 2020, Jesse has made 30+ lamps based on his clients’ happiest memories, ranging from a standard size Harley rider to his biggest piece, a 6-foot-high “Singin’ in the Rain” lamp! Jesse has a strong following including celebrities who have commissioned him to build “Louie’s” of their own. When the lights go down in the Broadway of your life, take a lesson from Jesse and “turn on” your personal light bulb! Visit HancoxArts on Facebook for more.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY

SCOTT

STALLINGS’

WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE

SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. After experiencing some health complications, Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says. 34
