Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family and friends instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs and distinctive vision by people who infuse them with passion and creativity, from the ground up. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

One element that’s new for Julie Parsons at her Charleston home? The seabirds in her backyard. Parsons, an interior designer with 25K+ followers on Instagram, has relocated to the Holy City and couldn’t be more excited. Parsons first established a home decor platform in 2019 by posting photos of her Pennsylvania home, and things have only grown from there. Her feed now features stunning shots of her bright & airy Charleston house, tips on how to elevate your space at home, and all of the details on where to purchase her standout items. It’s a treasure trove of home design inspiration. Parsons describes her aesthetic as “coastal and contemporary with a mix of traditional to keep a space balanced.” Imagine natural textures, clean lines, and a neutral palette, and you’ve got a window into her look. It’s no surprise that this designer was drawn to our city. Parsons admitted that the beach and ocean views were a big culprit behind their recent Charleston move. “I have loved the coastal style for quite some time. There is something so peaceful and serene about it. Blue is my favorite color to incorporate into a space – it represents not only the water and sky but also open spaces, freedom, imagination, and inspiration.” Parsons and her family made annual trips to the Isle of Palms over many years, so they got a taste of lowcountry living before permanently committing to the Southern Carolina coast. Previously, they lived in Erie, Pennsylvania and Virginia Beach before finally landing off of the Copahee Sound. It seems Charleston’s historic charm and beautiful landscapes swept their hearts away, inspiring the decision to make Charleston their home forever.

With a new move comes new inspiration, and Parsons’ platform is growing to show it. This time it’s with the addition of a blooming home design business. Canvas Home Design first began when a family reached out to Parsons for some design assistance. After chatting, they both came to realize that not only do their styles coincide, but so do their lives. It turns out that the family was located two streets over from the soon-to-be Parsons’ family home. It was serendipitous, and Parsons instantly said yes, and experience that ultimately led her to discover a passion for the design process as a whole, “[S]eeing the mood boards come to life piece-bypiece, room by room. It was in those moments where I realized that I wanted to make it a business.” Canvas Home Design offers both virtual and in person design services, so don’t let distance stop you from reaching out and making design plans for the New Year. It's clear that nothing is getting in Julie Parson's way. A Quick Q & A with Julie P.

COULD YOU GIVE US YOUR TOP THREE HOME DESIGN/STYLE TIPS? It's so hard to pick just three! • Determine your style. There are so many out there, so it is important to narrow down what you do and don't like. Creating a mood board on Pinterest can really help you see the big picture. You want to make it your own! • Pick a color scheme (three colors is best) and use those colors for the accents in your home i.e. pillows, art, rug, décor • Layers! You want to give your space depth and dimension. You can achieve this by adding plenty of textural pieces through your throw blankets, pillows, curtains, and rug, and definitely PLANTS!

“I have loved the coastal style for quite some time. There is something so peaceful and serene about it. Blue is my favorite color to incorporate into a space – it represents not only the water and sky but also open spaces, freedom, imagination, and inspiration.”

WHEN IT COMES TO HOME DECOR PIECES, DO YOU PREFER NEW ITEMS, REPURPOSED VINTAGE WARES, OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH? I love a combination of both. Decorating with new and adding touches of vintage pieces really helps to achieve that “lived in,” inviting feel throughout your home. I am also a big believer in mixing high and low end price points. Invest in what you love and what you know will stand the test of time, but also fill your home with affordable décor from some of my favorites such as Homegoods, Target, Amazon, and AtHome. A great mix and match!

ANY FAVORITE SPOTS IN CHARLESTON SO FAR? One of the primary reasons we moved here was for the water and the beaches. We definitely spend a lot of time there and love that we can enjoy it all year round. Another favorite is strolling downtown Charleston and meandering through the battery after a delicious meal all to be topped off with a stop at Carmella’s Café. We live off the Copahee Sound, so seeing all the seabirds in our backyard is definitely a favorite spot for me!

L E A R N M O R E : Parsons describes her aesthetic as “coastal and contempo-

rary with a mix of traditional to keep a space balanced.” Imagine natural textures, clean lines, and a neutral palette, and you’ve got a window into her look. It’s no surprise that this designer was drawn to our city.

Homeward Bound A Q&A WITH LOCAL INTERIOR DESIGNER, NICOLLE PRITCHARD, WHO SPLITS HER TIME AND CREATIVIT Y BETWEEN CHS AND NYC.

YOU CALL TWO PLACES HOME, AND WORK IN BOTH AS WELL. SO, IT SEEMS THAT THE UNIQUENESS OF EACH PLACE (NYC + CHS) COULD INFORM YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC? That's definitely proven true. I called NYC home for 11 years, and during that time I worked with some incredible clients. I’ve had the pleasure of sharpening my eye for detail, and making countless connections. My aesthetic is inspired by the clean lines of modern architecture, mixed with fun and unique pieces. I brought this approach to Charleston. Here, I'm inspired by the landscape and nature, the colors, and the architecture. I’m so lucky to live on a

22

lake, and this view inspires me and renews my love for this unique place daily.

WHAT WERE THE SPECS OF THIS PROJECT? THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, ETC. My client was from Hong Kong and had just moved to New York City for her children’s schooling. She interviewed a few designers, and I was honored she chose me. She was so great to work with, and what initially started as more of a color consultation and a few furniture pieces turned into a full furnishing/accessorizing job with some bespoke furniture pieces as well. We worked together initially over 2018-2019, and our collaboration continues with the addition of a few more pieces to her space.

WHAT WERE YOUR PRIMARY GOALS FOR THE "AFTER?" The client wanted a space that was modern, clean, and maximized the space. She desired subtle nods to her culture, and a luxurious feel. Her priceless view of the Metropolitan Opera and Central Park was paramount. Lastly, she loved nature, art and fashion. I was tasked with combining these requests, and creating a space that was luxurious and inviting. Where her unique NYC view was a focal point. Over time, I learned more about her children and their interests and we decided to add a baby grand piano to the library. Overall, my end goal was a space that she and her family loved and compliment their lives and created tranquility away from the busy streets of NYC. CONTINUED >

A HIGH-PROFILE PROPERTY IN MANHATTAN SUCH AS THIS MUST HAVE BEEN A DREAM TO GET YOUR HANDS ON. HOW DID YOU APPROACH THIS JOB, CREATIVELY SPEAKING. DO YOU HAVE A METHOD THAT YOU EMPLOY WITH EACH PROJECT, OR IS EACH ONE DIFFERENT, YOUR APPROACH VARYING FROM ONE TO THE NEXT? It definitely was a dream, and a dream client. I have a general approach when meeting with clients to make sure I’m able to gather as much information as possible to then translate into a design aesthetic. However, every client works differently and I’m flexible. Some prefer in-person meetings, and want to join in on shopping trips, while others are more hands-off. My goal is to curate an experience for each client that is tailored to their needs.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU, AND YOUR DESIGN? It really comes down to a moment. A moment is a genesis. And I love that it is never the same. It can be the space, a client's love for a specific locale, the architecture of a building, something that grabs me, but takes time to translate into an aesthetic, or an accessory that the client picked up while on vacation and wants to work into the home. Overall, the client and how they will use the space, is a big influence.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC? I’d say I’m a mix of polished, modern, artsy, glam, and coastal boho. I like a mix, and to add pieces in that are conversation starters. I love art furniture and am really inspired by the artists that create these pieces as well as showrooms that curate beautiful collections, such as Ralph Pucci, Maison Gerard, and Designers Collab. I love playing with styles and adding pieces that have meaning and/or are collected on travels. Our home in Charleston is a mixture of creams and beiges, with touches of green to pull the outside in. Our home in New York is mostly grey and cream with more clean lines.

Making Room Joe Lobert of Archer Construction shares the mission and philosophy behind his successful Lowcountry business.

ARTICLE BY PAMELA JOUAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLIS CREEK PHOTOGRAPHY

“A home is typically the biggest investment someone makes and so construction projects are an emotional process,” Joe Lobert explains. He’s the principal in a 15-year-old business, but like all the team members at Archer, the construction dust in his veins runs far deeper. For one, they all either studied at the College of Charleston or grew up locally which means they have a genuine appreciation for the preservation of Lowcountry homes and in some cases, 300-year-old buildings. “It means everything to know this area and what preservation entails. What we bring to the table is an intrinsic understanding of

28

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E SERVI CE S

what it means to build in the Lowcountry. Sometimes a house sits around an old oak tree and we have to not only understand and work within certain guidelines, but have a ‘stewardship of land’ attitude where construction is in harmony with nature in this area.” If you were to ask Joe what he does for a living, he would tell you he asks a lot of questions and listens deeply. It’s the best way to manage expectations. But as always, the devil is in the details and that is where Archer Construction shines because the expectations they manage are the ones they also plan on exceeding to the best of their abilities.

In today’s building climate of extended deadlines and busted budgets, it’s easy for construction projects to get out of hand. “Put yourself in your clients’ shoes: they are spending a lot of money and it’s up to us to make sure we realize their dreams in an agreed upon timeline and price. and make it perfect.” New construction or historical restoration, the Archer team approaches each project like a huge puzzle. Their primary job, from start to finish, is to put the budget together and work through all the details with the architect to capture his vision as well as that of the homeowners. Then they line up what’s on paper and take it to the field to make it a reality, managing a team of architects, designers, and vendors along the way. “There are potentially 200 tradesmen coming and going, and they each need direction and marching orders. Work needs to be constantly checked to make sure it is done to the highest standards. Simultaneously, we are ordering everything to make sure we are one step ahead of the game, so we meet deadlines. From the foundation to the roof, every little detail is taken into account.” There’s no place like home, especially your own home. Joe understands the depth of truth behind this classic sentiment, and his efforts are always aimed at cultivating and preserving it. That's the goal. So, Archer Construction isn't just building rooms - they're making room for memories to be made. This is a company that strives, ultimately, to create spaces that play host to our own histories, our stories. The spaces where our lives unfold.

WHEN DID YOU PURCHASE THE PROPERTY? HAD YOU BEEN LOOKING FOR A BIG RENO PROJECT OF THIS NATURE, OR DID THE INSPIRATION COME WHEN/AFTER YOU FOUND THE PROPERTY? We purchased the property in the summer of 2019. I partnered with two of my neighborhood friends, Casey Anderson and Dr. Stirling Harper. We all shared a similar interest in owning investment properties in downtown Charleston. Shortterm rentals seemed like a good fit because there were a lot of them happening in our neighborhood: CannonboroughElliotborough. It also made sense because of my professional background as an architect. Taking on a fixer-upper is a great way to build equity. Plus, we could design/build it to our preference. I have a lot of experience designing hotels, so the vacation rentals came naturally. Casey is a real-estate agent and Stirling is an emergency room doctor. We jokingly refer to our group as Bogard Brothers Real Estate.

WHAT WAS THE SCOPE OF THE INITIAL WORK ON THE PROPERTY? DID YOU DRAW UP THE PLANS/DESIGN YOURSELF? I was the project's architect, yes, and the scope was pretty intense. Although we didn't take it down to the studs, we did remove walls in the kitchen and living room to open up the space. The kitchen and two existing bathrooms were completely redone, and we added two bathrooms. Most of the interior finishes were replaced, however we were able to preserve the original heart-pine floors and a lot of the existing trim. The two-story front porch had been filled in around the 1960s, resulting was a house that was a bit ugly. This unfortunate renovation was removed and totally rebuilt to be the 2-story front porch you see today. During the renovation we made some great discoveries. There was an original brick chimney flue in the kitchen and one of the upstairs bedrooms that had been covered by plaster and sheet-rock. We were able to uncover it and now the chimney is an awesome feature of the house. CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C H A R L E STO N S C

There was also a fireplace in one of the upstairs bedrooms that had been covered up by cheap 1970s faux wood paneling. The same faux wood paneling was hiding the original wood bead-board wainscoting in the hallways which is now proudly displayed.

DID YOU WORK WITH A DESIGNER TO CREATE THE DISTINCTIVELY MODERN BOHO LOOK THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE? DID YOU PROCURE ANY OF THE DECOR/ FURNITURE FROM ANY LOCAL PLACES? Yes we worked with Jenny Keenan Design for the interiors. I had worked with JKD on The Spectator Hotel in Charleston and The George Hotel in Georgetown. (My partners and I) gave them freedom to design the space however they liked, our only suggestion being that the house should have a feminine vibe, as Charleston often caters to women groups such as bachelorette parties. This is a bit ironic since my partners and I are men, but the house is not for us, it's for our guests.

WHAT ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT WERE MOST ENJOYABLE FOR YOU? Finding creative ways to blend existing historic fabric with new contemporary design is always a fun challenge. For example the rough texture of the brick chimney flue in the kitchen contrasted with the clean lines of the new countertop and cabinets. Also knowing that the end-uses of the house are guests who are coming to Charleston to enjoy vacation also makes it fun to design. It gave us the freedom to make fun/bold design choices such as the pink Big Chill refrigerator or the black and white diamond tile in the upstairs shower. Those are choices we probably would not have made for someone's personal residence, but for vacation rentals you get to have fun.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO TAKE ON ANOTHER SIMILAR PROJECT?

of our readers regularly purchase from our ads.

Absolutely. This project is the first of hopefully many more. I'm currently working on a new eight-unit vacation rental development at 95 Cannon Street. I'm also interested in vacation rentals in other locations. I can honestly say that this project changed my family's life. It gave me a new way to use my architectural expertise. It provides extra income and has helped build our net worth. The more of these properties we own the more freedom we have to spend with our friends and family. Plus, it's a lot of fun! http://www.bohorosa.com/ We wanted to create something beautiful, but were initially unsure of what the end result would be ... that vision only coming after months of design work. It reminded me of a quote from Chuck Close, "Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work."

Homemade Home Team ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN MCDUFFIE

ingredients • 6 ounces spiced rum • 1.5 cups orange juice (pulp-free; see note) • 1 cup pineapple juice • 3 tablespoons cream of coconut • Freshly grated nutmeg, to garnish • 2 cups ice cubes

directions 1. Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend on high until very smooth. Taste and adjust any of the components to suit your preferences. 2. Pour into two highball glasses and dust with freshly grated nutmeg.

notes You can reduce the ingredients list by just using 2.5 cups of orange pineapple juice if you prefer.

A ode to Home Team BBQ's Game Changer Cocktail Our favorite version of a beloved Charleston cocktail, the Game Changer from Home Team BBQ. We always encourage you to run-don't-walk to your nearest Home Team location and enjoy one right where they came from. But on the nights when that's not an option, this homespun version is a dead ringer for the original. Only one type of rum is needed to nail the flavor, though mixing a spiced rum with a white rum is great as well. Lastly, a good quality bottled OJ works nicely (no need to squeeze fresh). Taste before serving and adjust any of the ingredient amounts as you see fit.
