January 2023 PUBLISHER

Lauren McDuffie | lauren.mcduffie@citylifestyle.com
Happy New Year, readers! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with all of your loved ones. And now that the parties, dinners, and celebrations are behind us, we can look forward with renewed anticipation for 2023. It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from here. The practice of establishing new goals for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is a priority, something truly worthy of our efforts. This month, we’ll explore the notions of health and wellness in a holistic, multifaceted way. We’ll explore a fun and unique way to nourish and strengthen your mental health with the improv comedy pros at Theatre 99, and will address the need to de-stigmatize mental healthcare with Barrier Islands Psychiatry. We’ll give you the rundown on the best races to be found in the Low Country and beyond this month, and a bright and fresh green juice recipe to help you power through it all. Our cover story gives us a peek inside the world of Blend Juice Bar Owner, Jesse Derbyshire, and how his vision of building a business around the values of health and wellness came to life. Let’s toast to a new year and a mindful reset, day in and day out. Wishing you a year of wellness, good health and absolute kindness all around. Happy 2023!

“Let me get this right, your 16-year-old son dressed up your dogs as lions for Halloween?” Greg Tavares confirmed with the audience volunteer on stage at Theatre 99. Ten minutes later, the audience erupted into belly laughs at a bit that incorporated a father confronting his teenage son about his dog-dressing fetish. It was good-natured, it was pure entertainment, it was improv at its best. Theatre 99 was born out of a partnership between Brandy Sullivan and Greg Tavares when they were theatre majors together at the University of South Carolina. From humble beginnings as The Have Nots, a three-person improv group, they eventually settled into a space on Cumberland Street in Charleston before relocating to their Meeting Street location in 2005. Today, Theatre 99 features over 50 members, has a thriving training program, and a live show schedule. They also perform at private and corporate events, and hold team-building classes. Up on stage, a company member set the rule for a scene about a ‘Parenting Skills’ podcast based upon a suggestion an audience member yelled out. The two actors who play the featured guests can only reply with one word at a time, alternating their responses to create coherent sentences. The outcome was a hilarious exercise in completely trusting and anticipating their partner’s next word. “Listening is very underdeveloped,” insisted Sullivan. “People feel respected when they feel heard. It’s a wonderful way to start a relationship ... an improv scene, or something at work.” Cheryl Donaldson could not agree more. A therapist with an MA in Clinical Psychology and owner of local Charleston practice, Helping Families Flourish, Donaldson affirmed that engaging with a partner in an activity like improv creates a helpful, healthy connection. “Trying to plan what might be funny exercises a part of your brain that now doesn’t feel lonely or isolated and instead is looking for the ridiculous in situations ... Even the choice to do improv, choosing to be vulnerable with other people who are choosing to be vulnerable, creates a social connection that builds confidence and positive emotions.” Donaldson loves the idea of being playful in a world that is otherwise full of heavy situations. “I use laughter in a session to introduce a lightness as an alternative to holding on to awkward situations.” After all, who doesn’t love to laugh? Donaldson noted that research shows how laughter triggers a release of endorphins in our nervous system that keeps our body relaxed for longer than even exercise. “That idea of being playful with your spouse, kids, or friends also introduces the concept of being carefree and letting go, which is what improv is all about. There is an energy about being silly that is important to capture.”

A TRA IN ED EA R IS A P RE RE QUISITE TO THAT.
Sullivan clearly loves making connections. Theatre 99 has performed countless private shows in and around Charleston, instructing groups of all sizes and ages. “Since improv is not scripted, we can adapt easily to any situation, from a church group to a bachelorette party.” The only promise Sullivan can’t make is that every show will be the same. “It’s different every time because the audience is always different." Erin Diehl, the founder and CEO of Learn To Improve It, a Chicagobased team-building company, recently visited Theatre 99 and attested to the quality of the experience. “What I witnessed was pure joy, the contagious type to be exact! The performers' talent was evident throughout the entire show, not to mention the genuine connection, ultimate support, and many, many laughs. I cannot wait to go back and am so happy that this slice of heaven exists here in Charleston!” theatre99.com

M UST SE E | HEA LTH + WELLNE S S
"Be sure to drink water with ginger and lemon ... helps with inflammation!" This was the simple advice given to me by Blend Juice Bar owner, Jesse Derbyshire, upon first meeting him. I'd shared that I was having knee surgery the following morning, and he was quick to offer a nourishing recipe to help support my recovery. Color me intrigued. It was clear that this man knew his stuff, so far as healing beverages are concerned. So, I asked him to share a little more about running his wellness-centered business and how he practices what he preaches as he cultivates a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle for his family. In a time when self-care and wellness trends abound, I found it refreshing that in my conversation with Jesse, he never once mentioned a self-care fad. His wellness philosophy was void of buzzwords or of-the-moment notions, demonstrating instead a consistency and dedication that takes its time. His clear devotion to healthy living consists of simple-yet-effective things that live outside the realm of fleeting trends with unstable shelf lives. He completed his first-ever juice cleanse more than 30 years ago, for example, well before it was a mainstream practice. Juice cleanses, incidentally, stand as a fantastic resolution for anyone wanting to kick off the new year in good health. But if that feels a little daunting, he offers an alternative, more approachable suggestion for all of us juicing newbies: Pick one realistic, manageable healthy thing to add to your daily routine, and replace an unhealthy habit with that. Committing to this single change can spawn additional healthy choices, resulting in a snowball effect of the best kind. So as to not just talk the talk, Derbyshire made the decision to replace his daily soda with a (much healthier) green juice more than 10 years ago and never looked back. Small but intentional changes like this are
what make all the difference, Derbyshire asserts. This is a great place to start when making a health and wellness-focused resolution in the new year. These are the things that add up over time. It's a solid formula he's developed, to be sure, on both the lifestyle and business fronts. Time spent with family. Laughter. Fresh air and fresh, nourishing food. These are the intangibles; the invaluable building blocks of a life well-lived, and well-loved. I'll drink (a green juice) to that.
QUICK FIRE Q & A WITH JESSE DERBYSHIRE WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? We treat all of the Old Village as our outdoor playground. From tennis, bike rides and rollerblading to the Post House Inn and shark tooth hunting at the Pitt Street Bridge - we make the most of our neighborhood. I also love to create in the kitchen. I learned to cook from my grandpa and now my son has taken a liking to helping me in the kitchen. He’s my sous chef.
CAN YOU SHARE BLEND'S ORIGIN STORY? I wanted to make a healthy living juice that actually tasted good. I was in California, years ago, doing an intense detox, when I learned about and actually felt the benefits of natural foods and phytonutrients. "Living juice" has living enzymes and hasn't been heat treated or pressurized in the bottling process. I wasn't a healthy eater as a child and as an adult, I knew I needed to incorporate more nutrients in my diet. Before Blend, there weren’t any juices that were both healthy AND delicious in the Charleston market. I recognized an opportunity to bring the “healthy goodness” to Charleston. Now, Blend uses neither heat nor pressure, and we offer fresh, living juices every day.
I was fascinated with the benefits of "living" juice and realized that there was an opportunity to bring the healthy goodness to Charleston. Overall, the goal of Blend is to be a place where people can experience healthy living, whether they are new to juicing or juicing vets. I wanted to show that something good FOR you can also taste great as well.

DOES YOUR FAMILY PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR BUSINESS?
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR BLEND?
John Colin was three when he started helping out, peeling bananas and greeting customers. One of my favorite parts of Blend is the legacy I'm leaving for my children. While my family isn't involved in daily operations, my parents have played an integral role in its success. My mother’s energy bites inspired ours, and my father’s incredible business sense and work ethic instilled key values in me.
We hope to partner with like-minded businesses in Charleston to support people on their wellness journeys. We also hope to open a downtown location and possibly franchise, as well. Our Love Bites (formerly Blend Bites) have been a local favorite for the past eight years and we're preparing to launch them nationwide.
M O R E : Originally from Lima, OH, Derbyshire has called Charleston home for 32 years. He enjoys spending time with his family, taking advantage of the abundance of outdoor activities afforded in and around Shem Creek. From tennis courts, bike rides, and rollerblading to meals at the Post House Inn and shark tooth hunting on the Pitt Street Bridge, they treat their Old Village neighborhood as a playground.

A Green Juice a Day... JESSE DERBYSHIRE OF MOUNT PLEASANT'S BLEND JUICE BAR SHARES HIS G O -T O G R E E N J U I C E R E C I P E .
When it comes to healthy resolutions, Jesse suggests starting small. "Add one healthy thing to your daily routine, and remove one unhealthy habit each day. I started over 10 ears ago by adding just one green juice a day and cutting out soda." There may be no better recipe to weave into your daily wellness routine than a classic green smoothie. Blend Juice Bar owner, Jesse Derbyshire, shares his favorite green elixir, which can be made with either a juicer or a high-speed blender. This recipe can be easily multiplied and made in a large batch, as needed. Fresh juice keeps for about 1 day, in the refrigerator.

green juice
ingredients: • • • • • • •
2/3 cup chopped fresh pineapple 2 to 3 teaspoons freshly chopped mint (or to taste) 1/2 cucumber, roughly chopped 2 stalks celery, roughly chopped 1/3 cup baby spinach leaves 1/3 cup chopped kale (any variety you like) 2 tablespoons fresh parsley (approximately, or to taste) • Half a green apple, cored/seeded and roughly chopped • Juice of 1/4 lemon • 1/4-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled
directions: 1. Wash the produce. 2. Place all of the ingredients into a high-speed blender (or you can use a juicer), and add 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup ice (if you want it cold right away). Blend on high speed until everything is broken up and well-combined. 3. It will have the consistency of a smoothie at this point. Using a fine or medium mesh strainer, strain the mixture to remove any solids/pulp. 4. Serve right away, or refrigerate until needed. Fresh "living" juice will keep in the refrigerator for about a day in a sealed container.

THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY CHARLESTON HAS BECOME A PREMIER RUNNING LOCATION.

Charlestonians love to run, a lot. Given the mild climate, flat terrain, sweeping views, and opportunities to get social, it’s easy to understand why. Consider the benefits to your body and your mind alone. “Being outside is always good for your mental health,” insisted Diane Errington, President of the Charleston Running Club which helped start two of the area’s largest races in the 1970s, the Cooper River Bridge Run and the Kiawah Marathon. “You work your body, you free your mind, and it just makes you feel better. Once you’ve started any type of physical activity, it’s pretty hard to stop,” she cautioned. “You will crave it after a while.” It’s a scientific fact that physical activity stimulates chemicals in our brains that make us feel less stressed, more relaxed. Maybe that’s why there are so many happy people in Charleston. As Charleston continues to grow, so does running. “When Covid closed pools and gyms, people took to the streets to run,” observed Errington. Justin Hart, Manager of Fleet Feet in Carnes Crossroads noted, “In addition to
an explosion in population, we have seen new industries making their home in Charleston and promoting healthy lifestyles and step challenges as part of their network benefits.” Bear in mind the perks a running community has to offer. Yes, running comes with its own village! “The running community is gracious and always willing to help runners of all levels and abilities," declared Errington. “Group runs are a great way to meet fellow runners and walkers and share experiences.” She pointed to several groups the Charleston Running Club offers, as well as Fleet Feet, who have the official training program for the Bridge Run. Jennifer Roberts, Marketing Coordinator for Fleet Feet explained that an 11-week program is offered with group workouts twice a week. The 10K Cooper Bridge Run has cemented Charleston as the running destination each April. “Let’s face it, who doesn’t want to ‘get over it’?” Errington laughed, alluding to the race adage. Be mindful not to disregard the basics, like being kind to yourself and investing in a good pair of shoes. “Patience is key: start slow and work your way up,” said Errington. “Start with a walk-run routine and slowly decrease the time you walk. Your lungs, joints and ligaments will thank you.” As for shoes, Roberts is continually surprised by the amount of people running in the wrong size and type of shoe for their feet. “It really makes a world of difference,” she promised.

Tending to your mental health doesn’t have to be a tedious thing. It can be something as simple as going for a walk to clear your head. Or, something less solitary like checking in with a professional to talk. For those in crisis, it can mean the difference between life and death. Regardless of the scale with which you're struggling, seeking out help can only be a good thing. Benefits of taking care of your mental health include both lowering your risk of illness and increasing your energy. Not to mention the effect it could have on your personal relationships and overall quality of life. So, why not get started?
“WE HAVE TO NORMALIZE PEOPLE GETTING HELP.” Receiving help for your mental well-being is so often stigmatized and it shouldn't be. Those at Barrier Island Psychiatry believe that seeking out treatment can give you the proper support system. A support system which is necessary in order to cope with the hardships we all encounter while moving

through life. While their specialty is addiction treatment services, Barrier Islands provides a wide array of services. They offer evaluations, treatment plans, individual counseling, group counseling, and an intensive outpatient program. They also partner with Hammocks on the Edisto (a South Carolina recovery center) to offer in-patient treatment as well.
“WE LIKE TO BE A ONE-STOP SHOP.” Their office finds that they get a better result with clients because their services are almost all provided under one roof in West Ashley. The staff includes both psychiatrists and therapists, along with many others providing support along the way. This allows for a collaborative environment which results in a convenient and reliable treatment plan for each patient. If there ever were hold-ups on your path to mental and physical well-being, Barrier Islands Psychiatry is the type of office that will find a way to help.

Take, for example, their implementation of Neurostar at their office. Neurostar is a type of treatment for TMS, which stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS is a breakthrough treatment for clients who struggle with major depression. This new therapy is “a non-drug alternative” for those who have “tried and failed, or maybe they just aren’t getting enough of a result” via medication. This therapy works by targeting magnetic impulses at certain areas of the brain which are known to affect mood. Once the client is deemed appropriate, they are scheduled to come in for a mapping where a magnet is fitted over their head and measurements are taken in order to locate those areas of the brain. Then, for the next couple of weeks, the client comes in for 20-30 minute sessions each day where those magnetic pulses will go and activate the areas of the brain which haven't been firing before. This treatment has already been performed with more than 50 clients at their office, and they hope to help even more. “Nothing is going to happen overnight, or by chance. If you’re willing to take the first chance to start this process you aren’t alone”
