December 2023 LIFESTYLE LETTER
Empathy and Kindness are the Essence of the Holidays As the holiday season approaches, we find ourselves immersed in the enchanting magic of this special time of year. Our city comes alive with sparkling lights, joyful visitors, and a sense of togetherness that warms the heart. This season, we want to celebrate not just the festivities but also the spirit of giving, hospitality, and community that defines the holidays. Stuart and I cherish the tradition of hosting our families in Charleston during the holiday season. With loved ones traveling from as far as Atlanta, Georgia, and Cary, North Carolina, these gatherings are a heartwarming blend of reunion and exploration. Charleston, with its festive ambiance and myriad activities, becomes more than just a backdrop to our celebrations; it’s an integral part of the experience. The city’s holiday spirit not only envelops our homes but also our hearts, making every moment spent with family even more special. As we prepare to welcome our loved ones into our homes, we understand the importance of creating a guest room that exudes warmth and comfort. To help you achieve this, we’ve put together some tips and ideas that will make your guests feel cherished and at ease, ensuring unforgettable moments of joy and connection. For example, a handmade candle from the Candle Damsel (@candledamsel) is a beautiful keepsake, made with love by Tiffany “Tippy” Gammell. We’ve also compiled a list of thoughtful hostess/ host gifts that will express your gratitude and appreciation for the hospitality extended to you. These gestures of kindness serve as a reminder of the bonds that unite us during this season of goodwill. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back, we are including local charities for you to give your time and donations to in hopes of making the season bright for all. This holiday season, our greatest wish for you is that you are cocooned in love and peace. May we all remember to extend grace, empathy, and love to one another. Happy Holidays to you and yours! Make Your Guestroom Holiday-Cozy
Place a bedside water carafe and glass so your guests don’t have to roam during the night.
SMALL TOUCHES CAN MAKE YOUR GUESTS FEEL THE LOVE. ARTICLE BY EILEEN DAILY
It’s the holiday season, which means you may be hosting out-of-town family and friends. We asked interior designer Ginger Brewton (@gingerbrewtoninteriors) to curate a list of items that will make your guests feel cared for and tended to. Whether you’re hosting one guest or a family with children, there are several things you can do to make their stay more comfortable and enjoyable. “It’s all about empathy and thoughtfulness,” Ginger says. “Traveling can be stressful, so putting yourself in their shoes and thinking about what would make it easier for them is the way to approach it.” Thinking about what will make their stay cozy and enjoyable is also a key consideration. For example, if you know your guests are bringing a small child who might be traveling for the first time away from home, a unicorn nightlight (www. Anthropologie.com) can be a whimsical, gentle way to help ease them to sleep. A simple water carafe and glass by the bedside are not only lovely to look at but functional as well: guests don’t want to have to tiptoe to the kitchen in the middle of the night! Putting a handwritten welcome note in their room will be something they take home and will serve as a wonderful memento of their trip. Safe and happy holidays to all!
A soft throw or two will make your guests feel cozy.
This unicorn nightlight can ease children’s overnights away from home.
Small luggage racks keep the room uncluttered.

Under a New Big Top! Spiegeltent comes back for a second season to Charleston’s Gaillard Center
Music and lights under the tent.
ARTICLE BY PAMELA JOUAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CHARLESTON GAILLARD CENTER Spiegeltent is Dutch for “mirror tent,” a large traveling entertainment venue decorated with mirrors and stained glass. This mammoth wood and canvas creation provides an intimate opportunity for audience members to engage with artists, and an entirely new space to showcase talent. “We were looking for something that would allow us to stand apart during a crowded holiday season and complement our larger-scale shows in the main performance hall,” explained Lissa Frenkel, CEO of Charleston Gaillard Center. She first experienced the Spiegeltent years ago in Lower Manhattan and was drawn to the idea that it fit “Charleston’s reputation as a city with a historic bohemian underground scene and the community’s clear interest in well-designed spaces.” It takes more than a week to set up and install the audio, lighting, power, staging, decor, and seating.
Kellie Lawson, Director of Marketing and Communications, explained that each performance has a different seating map — from standing room only, to chairs and booths in the round. Last year’s tent was extremely well received. “Many people were surprised at how old-world and glamorous it felt,” said Frenkel. With more family-oriented shows in the performance hall, she was able to focus on adult programming in this space, working with Spiegeltent collaborator, Underbelly, to bring 15 performances of Cabaret Royale, which features the best in circus, burlesque, and cabaret. Other performances under the big top include Australian cabaret star Meow Meow, and the second annual Homegrown and Nationally Known concert featuring Charleton Singleton.
“Over the past year, I have heard time and time again that audiences were excited about this more intimate venue, and surprised and delighted that the Gaillard Center was programming something a lit tle more adventurous.” — Lissa Frenkel, CEO

CHARLESTON RESIDENT AND HOTBOX AUTHOR MATT LEE TALKS HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING, LOWCOUNTRY STYLE
20
M UST SE E | FOOD + BEV E RAGE
Any true Southern cook knows who the Lee Brothers are. Cookbook authors and leading authorities on Southern foodways, Matt and Ted grew up in Charleston, where Matt said “it was impossible not to be folded into the food scene.” Their cookbooks, food and travel columns, and television shows all pay homage to Southern dishes, with a deep understanding of and reverence for historical context. You can often find them cooking quintessentially Lowcountry dinners at local events around town. So what possessed them to go undercover as $10-an-hour catering cooks in New York City to expose the underbelly of the catering business? They were sucked in after watching a James Beard dinner for 80 being prepped with nothing more than a few sheet pans, a sterno can, and an aluminum ‘hotbox’ on wheels. For the better part of seven years, the brothers chopped, diced, juiced, sprinkled, assembled, layered, wrapped, and unwrapped dishes by the thousands for some of the fanciest galas in the most unseemly situations, such as cooking for billionaires in a cold vestibule.
‘TIS THE SEASON TO ENTERTAIN Matt and his brother discovered a fast-paced world of kitchen knife-carrying mercenaries and crazy-rich clients with unrealistic expectations under the heady backdrop of the Empire State Building. “We didn’t set out to write a New York history, but the city is definitely a protagonist in the catering story because such extremes couldn’t exist anywhere else.” As for their take on surviving in catering: “Finding those zen moments,” Matt muses. “It’s a tightrope walk between caring and the ability to compromise on best principles for the sake of your own sanity!” With the holiday season upon us, Matt offers up some general party-planning tips and then lays out a plan for a cocktail party as well as a sitdown dinner.
PARTY PLANNING TIPS -Do as much as possible in advance, so you can be present at the party. That includes designing a menu that minimizes stress and strain. Try to avoid using the oven while guests are over for anything except low-temperature warming or crisping. -Organize! Anything you can knock out the week before the party, please do it! -Get help. Bring in pros or even amateurs! When you’re hosting 20 guests, having someone to answer the door and help with the dishes, serving, and clean-up can make or break the evening. It’s the holidays, pace yourself!
WARMING TRICKS: Sternos on a sheet pan in (off) oven. Use larger coolers (small, enclosed spaces — no ice!) for pans and bowls to keep items warm Sous-vide sauces and gravies can be kept warm in a pot of water (sealed in batches in ziploc bags).
FOR HORS D’OEUVRES: We always favor designs with a built-in handle, like quail drumsticks, or anything eaten whole with a dry exterior, like mini tarts. If you have access to cool bamboo skewers, use those!
MATT’S LOWCOUNTRY CLASSIC HOLIDAY COCKTAIL PARTY
Matt Lee jumps into the kitchen during a catering event.
Cover of HOTBOX, an expose on the catering industry written by the Lee Bros.
Pickled Shrimp: on a bamboo toothpick with a tangle of fennel/chile on each. You can prepare this a day or two in advance, and the flavor gets better. She-Crab Soup Shots: Don’t forget the brilliant-orange, crab-roe garnish. Keep the pitcher of hot soup warm in an empty cooler so you don’t have to tend a pot. Pimento Cheese Crostini: Easy to love and prepare in quantity. Saint-Cecilia Punch: A classic Charleston batched punch. Other Drink Options: Offer a beer choice that shows you put some thought into it (seasonal, local), and seltzer with lemon/lime garnish. Drink Station Snacks: can include Cheese Straws (in Julep cups or pint glasses) and Boiled Peanuts (self-service).
MATT’S LOWCOUNTRY HOLIDAY SEATED DINNER First course: Start with something that feels luxurious: a cold, raw scallop preparation, simply cured in lime juice, with drizzles of high-quality olive oil, Maldon sea salt flakes, a fresh herb, and a scatter of salmon roe for salty pops of flavor. Second course: Charleston Okra Soup kept on low on a stovetop burner. No worries about skin forming if it doesn’t get cold. Main course: Chile-braised short ribs are soul-warming this time of year. You can make it days before, keep it in the fridge where the flavor will enhance, and simply reheat and serve. Sides: Pimento Cheese Potato Gratin, a comforting casserole of layered sliced potatoes and roasted peppers with a creamy, cheesy, spice sauce. Round out the plate with crisp, fresh greens served with pickled red onions and a lemony (or vinegary) dressing as a counterpoint to all the richness on the plate. Dessert: Huguenot Torte. Dress it up with vanilla ice cream or whiskey-whipped cream.

Glamorous and festive for the holidays.
Kristin Cavallari Brings Uncommon James to Charleston We sat down with TV personality and Uncommon James founder Kristin Cavallari on the eve of her fourth retail location opening in December - this time, in Charleston!
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT CHARLESTON, WHAT IS IT THAT MADE YOU WANT TO HAVE A RETAIL LOCATION HERE? WAS IT SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY THE CITY MADE YOU FEEL? Charleston is one of my favorite cities in the country. It has so much charm, the food is amazing, the people are great. I love King Street, the water, the restaurants, the hotels - I love the whole vibe of Charleston! It’s also a destination city — for girls’ trips, bachelorette trips, holiday shopping trips — and as an owner of a retail brand, I care and think a lot about where people are going. Charleston is obviously one of the places they’re going. That, and my love for it, made it clear Charleston would be where I opened my next Uncommon James store.

YOUR BRAND IS BOTH ACCESSIBLE AND ASPIRATIONAL. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO CONNECT WITH SO MANY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE PART OF YOUR BRAND?
HOW DO YOU EFFORTLESSLY CREATE YOUR JEWELRY LINE, WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY AGE-AGNOSTIC AND WELCOMING TO ALL WOMEN? IS IT SOMETHING THAT YOU’RE INTENTIONAL ABOUT?
When I launched Uncommon James, the whole point was to make fashion accessible. Accessories don’t need to cost a fortune - everyone should have access to great pieces. I like stripping things down and making it simple; so with my jewelry, I want all of the pieces to mix and match with what people already own and also with our other Uncommon James pieces. And with our skincare products, I started with five core products that could be the foundation of anyone’s skincare routine. I don’t think people need 20 different products – just a few really great ones. Our jewelry pieces are really effortless and simple. I don’t want people to have to overthink it. I want people to be able to just put them on and feel good. I design with the intention that most people can find a piece that speaks to them and that they can envision it working with a piece of their own jewelry.
I pay attention to the trends, and then I un-complicate them. But I think because I have so many sides to my personality, I gravitate toward different pieces for the various areas of my life. I have the “entertainment me” who’s on E! News promoting the line; but that’s just one part of my life. My every day is being mom and being at school doing functions with my kids. Women have these different parts of our lives I’m not going to wear the same pieces on E! News that I wear to school. I think that because everything is so simple, it’s easy for girls and women of any age to find something that works for them. My mom is 70, and she has pieces she loves, but my 11-year-old son has girls in his class that wear my jewelry.
“I pay attention to the trends, and then I
un-complicate them.”
I THINK IT’S EMPOWERING THAT YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THERE ARE DIFFERENT SIDES TO YOURSELF AND THAT YOU TAKE CARE OF THOSE SIDES. Yes, thank you. For all
women, we have so many different sides to ourselves. We’re not just “mom” or “businesswoman.” We wear so many different hats. Having pieces that are versatile enough to wear with all of those sides is great, so I’m definitely designing for all facets of my life, not just for one.
COLLECTIVELY, THE AESTHETIC AND PRICE POINT OF YOUR PIECES, PLUS YOU BEING THE FACE OF THE BRAND, INSPIRE WOMEN TO TAKE A LITTLE LEAP AND TRY SOMETHING NEW. WHEN THEY SEE YOU WEARING UNCOMMON JAMES JEWELRY, THEY CAN IMAGINE IT ON THEMSELVES.
IS IT ABOUT HOW THE JEWELRY MAKES SOMEONE FEEL?
Up until a few years ago, high fashion pieces were being created that not everyone could afford. Today, a lot of brands – not just Uncommon James — are doing a really good job making those trendier pieces more affordable so that everyone can participate in and try the really fun fashion pieces.
I really believe that accessories can make or break an outfit. I could be wearing something really basic like jeans and a t-shirt, but with a pair of shoes and great earrings, it elevates the look. It does affect how I feel, and I think it does for all women. It gives you that pep in your step. CONTINUED >

“Regardless of location, I want people to walk into an Uncommon James store and be excited and have a really warm, welcoming feeling. I never want any of my stores to be intimidating. I want people to feel really comfortable and confident.” - Uncommon James Founder Kristin Cavallari
Layered necklaces can change the look of a simple white shirt.
If I can make women feel really good about themselves when they put Uncommon James jewelry on, for me… that’s everything. That’s why I do it.
REWARDING TOP CUSTOMERS At Uncommon James, we know who our top customers are, and we do a lot to not just reward them but engage with them, get to know them, understand who they are and what they feel and want.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE A WORK/ LIFE BALANCE, PARTICULARLY AS A SINGLE MOM? Honestly, I couldn’t do it without my C-suite team. I no longer have to be at the office every day, on emails until I go to sleep and back on them the second I wake up. There was a period when I was maxed out for sure, but I’ve gotten it to a great place. My team at Uncommon James is so incredible that I’m able to let go, and I don’t have to worry about every single thing. I have final say in
Kristin makes all productrelated decisions.
anything product-related, I have a hand in marketing, I plan the big campaign shoots, but other than that, they really do it all.
THE WORK/LIFE BALANCE SOMETIMES SEEMS INTANGIBLE. HOW DO YOU APPROACH IT? When I got divorced, I created a very hard line between my work and family lives. If I get a call to do something, and it’s when I’m with my children, I say no because it usually means I will have to travel to L.A. or New York. My time with my kids is so precious because I don’t have them all the time. I want them to know that when they’re with me they’ll have consistency, stability, and will always know what to expect.
Uncommon James jewelry works on its own or with the jewelry you already own.
I make sure my kids know they are my number one priority – that will never change. When I have my kids, I have my kids. That’s it. Kids really need their mom, and besides, I would rather be with my kids than any other people. I enjoy spending time with them, they make me laugh, they’re at really fun ages: 11, 9, and 8.
FOURTH STORE I’m so excited to be opening up my fourth retail store in Charleston! My other locations are Nashville, Chicago, and Dallas, but Charleston will be my biggest store yet. Learn more about Uncommon James at uncommonjames.com, and follow Kristin on Instagram @kristincavallari.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 30
LOCA LS ON LY | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
