A Thanksgiving Reflection from our Family to Yours
CONTR IBUTING WR ITER

Suzanne Pilla
Dear friends, As Thanksgiving draws near, it's a time to pause and reflect on the myriad of blessings we've received this year. More than just a day for feasting, it's an occasion to give thanks for all the moments, big and small, that have shaped our lives. This year, let us also remind ourselves of the importance of giving back. Whether it's a gesture of kindness, a helping hand, or sharing what we have, every act of generosity has the power to create ripples of positivity in our world. But above all, Thanksgiving is about togetherness. Even if miles apart, the bonds of family and friendship bring us closer in spirit. It's about the warmth of shared laughter, the joy of cherished memories, and the hope for more unforgettable times together. And this season of gratitude, let's celebrate the gift of each other because in the end, it's not just about the food on our tables, but the hands we hold around them. Wishing you all a heartfelt Thanksgiving filled with love, joy, and cherished moments.

I was behind the bar making us a drink, and she asked me, ‘What are you most grateful for?’ And I said, ‘To come through our place and to see people laughing, telling stories, and spending time together.’ “Felix is a very relaxed atmosphere. It’s a laid-back vibe that is very Paris,” Felix says. “One of the really cool things about Charleston is that you’ll have people ranging in age from 18-75 coming together, all in the same space. That’s very European,” he says. “What I really like about Paris is that they come together as part of their culture – cafes are where they have conversations and arguments.” “That’s the reason we used subway tile behind the bar, a nod to all the Parisians who meet at cafes after work when they get off the subway. Soft wood, marble bar. This is very Paris metro, the feel.” Felix is opening La Cave (pounced La Cahv) in the space next door to Felix, with a planned opening for March 2023. It’s going to be a sipping lounge with a softer, more upscale-feeling energy, he says.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUZANNE PILLA (@SUZPILL)
Felix Landrum may be Michigan-born, but he has Paris running through his veins. Both his maternal and paternal grandparents are from France. “A lot of the food we feature at Felix are things from my childhood and make me nostalgic for that time in my life. My family has French heritage, but I grew up in America with family dinners and spending time together at the table. “I want my menu to be simple, because in actuality, French food is very simple. Look at coq au vin - it’s just chicken and wine!” But French cooking is time-intensive, Felix says. “A lot of the dishes we make here are things I grew up eating, and at Thanksgiving we would always have Brussels sprouts, deviled eggs, and Mac and cheese with béchemel sauce.” A month after they opened Felix in 2017, Felix and his wife sat at the bar on Christmas Day. (The restaurant closes only on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas, so they were in the beautiful space by themselves.) “It was just the two of us, sitting in the corner by the windows at the bar,” Felix says.
Lobster deviled eggs are the perfect brunch starter. The phenomenal Parisian Mac et Cheese.
Felix’s bread pudding is a guest favorite.

W H O S E S I D E A R E YO U O N ? “At Loggerheads” pits developers against environmentalists around a murder on a barrier island.
Author Kristen Ness is always aglow at the beach.
The highly anticipated book, “At Loggerheads”
Kristen is passionate about protecting sea turtles.
ARTICLE BY PAMELA JOUAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DIANA DEAVER You write what you know. In the case of “At Loggerheads,” author Kristen Ness weaves in the life path she could have taken with the things she cares deeply about in a lush thriller about, believe it or not, sea turtles. Kristen Ness is exuberant about her love of the Carolina coastline. An English major at Duke University, she toyed seriously with the idea of a career in marine biology but eventually followed in her father’s footsteps and got a law degree. Even then, she wasn’t convinced she would practice, dabbling in environmental law which led her to international environmental law and a summer in Syndney, Australia. It was at Parker Poe where she came across her calling in immigration law. When the idea for her book began to stick, she decided to open her own law practice so she could balance her love of writing with her career.

Kristen presents her case for conservation through the eyes of a young professional woman returning home, much like a sea turtle who often travels thousands of miles back to nest in the place she was born. “At Loggerheads” is filled with rich natural descriptions that make you long for wind-swept beach walks. Kristen presents her case for conservation through the eyes of a young professional woman returning home, much like a sea turtle who often travels thousands of miles back to nest in the place she was born.
THE BEACH Kristen says her love affair with the beach started when she was a kid. “I grew up in Columbia, but we used to come to Charleston all the time to go to the beach. I was that kid on the beach with a cast net in the tide pools. I collected shells and looked them up in books. I was Brooke.”
WHO IS BROOKE? The line definitely blurs between the author and the main character, Dr. Brooke Edens. “Brooke’s love of marine biology was purposeful. I made her have my alternative dream job!”
WHERE IS ANDERS ISLE? “When I close my eyes I see the very north end of IOP as far as you can go. My visuals are actually based on how IOP looked before Wild Dunes existed.”
THE ‘WRITE’ PROCESS “Short stories, free writes, you name it, I always found a little time to write.” Kristen audited a creative writing class at Queen’s College in Charlotte, NC. “I would sneak out of my office to go watch an IMAX movie about dolphins. Someday, I wanted to get back to my love of marine biology and writing.” She started working on “At Loggerheads” around the time she started a family. Sometimes, all she could manage was 15 minutes to flesh out characters or a scene, or jot down some dialogue. “My days were crazy, but when I had the time to come back to the story, it was always there waiting for me.”
THE IDEA “In 2005, I was on the beach with my mom at Sullivan’s Island. It was the first time I had ever seen actual sea turtle tracks on the beach. I got this seed of an idea: what might be happening on this island if you saw tracks of a mother turtle coming out of the ocean to nest, but never found a nest, the turtle, or the return tracks to the water? From that, I started working on an outline.”
TURTLE TEAM “I was halfway into my first draft when we moved to Charleston. The first thing I did was join the turtle team on Isle of Palms. That was a huge piece of living research. I didn’t tell anyone I was writing a book until the full draft was completed. All the women were amazing and one of them, best-selling author Mary Alice Monroe, was a great mentor and sounding board on next steps.”
“YOU HAD ME AT TURTLE.” It might have taken her over a decade to complete the book, but Kristen landed herself an agent in less than 15 minutes. “I checked the acknowledgments in “Where the Crawdads Sing” and decided to query that agent. I received an immediate reply and yes, he actually wrote: ‘You had me at turtle.’ He is a huge proponent of conservation. Ironically, my publisher used to be on Turtle Patrol in Pawleys Island. Sea turtles really helped me sell my book!”
THAT TITLE To be ‘at loggerheads’ is to be in conflict with someone or something. “Here, it addresses the ongoing conflict between development and environmentalism and begs the question: can you be in the worlds of capitalism and conservation at the same time? Can a healthy economy encourage a healthy environment, and vice versa?”
BLUE SUSTAINABILITY AND A SEA CREATURE WAVE IN LITERATURE “Water makes up 70 percent of our planet. I don’t think people really consider the connection we have with the ocean: we came from it, and we will cease to exist if it is not healthy. There are several authors who are now writing fiction about sea creatures, everything from whales to the giant Pacific octopus. I sincerely hope people will read these stories and care more about what is going on in the ocean.”
SO WHAT’S NEXT? “My goal is to highlight a sea creature in some way in each of my books to illustrate why it’s beneficial to protect that species. My next book will draw from my own experiences again, but this time, the main character will be an immigration lawyer. It’s a suspense thriller with a murder, and let’s just say the pufferfish and its toxin will be featured largely in the story.”

Families gather for a beach day event hosted by the Lonon Foundation.
Providing a Lifeline to Charleston Families The Lonon Foundation serves families impacted by cancer. ARTICLE BY EILEEN DAILY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE LONON FOUNDATION It is often said that from sadness, joy and kindness may spring. When Anna Lonon’s husband died of cancer, she realized there wasn’t an active emotional support system for her and her two young children. Instead of giving up, she went on a quest. She created a foundation for families with children who have lost a parent or caregiver to cancer. The Lonon Foundation offers families several key resources as they navigate their journey. The UPLIFT Program is designed for children aged 5-17. Here’s what’s included: • Personalized mindfulness-themed packages provide developmentally appropriate materials and activities to help children cope. Each child gets their own UPLIFT Box upon enrollment. • Virtual and in-person events that focus on coping skills. • Certified Child Life Specialists provide ongoing professional support. • Mini-grants through the foundation’s Michelle Somogyi Nemeth MiniGrant Program, which can be used for utility bills, school supplies, clothing, counseling, medication, and housing costs. The Lonon Foundation has served more than 65 families and over 100 children across the state of South Carolina. Their programs and services are data-driven and goal-oriented to ensure continued effectiveness. For example, after hosting virtual events during the pandemic, they heard from families that they appreciate both in-person and virtual gatherings even now that the pandemic is over. “We believe it’s critical to let the families lead when it comes to articulating their needs; we individualize our services for them based on their feedback. We evolve with our families and community partners,” Anna says. When meeting a child who has lost their parent or caregiver to cancer, Anna says there are guideposts to help. “It’s important to have consistent, honest conversations — some children benefit from talking about their feelings or memories of the person, while others need more independent space to experience their emotions related to the death.” The foundation encourages their families to have a special moment or celebration each year into survivorship. “Children tend to enjoy helping plan these moments,” Anna says. “It’s important to follow the lead of your child, as their feelings around the anniversary are diverse and complicated.”

Anna Lonon, Founder Anna Lonon highlights key moments from her work that she’ll never forget: • Providing mini-grants to help families in countless ways, including ensuring art therapy for a child, buying winter coats for families, and gifting families a computer for homeschooling during Covid. • Hearing a person say that they are so glad we are here and that they are so thankful that someone understands what they are going through. • Listening to a college student who has shared their story of having a parent with cancer and wanting to give back to help other kids so they don’t feel so alone. • Seeing the smiling faces of kids over Zoom during the pandemic. Being a part of UPLIFT online was such an important way for them to express themselves during a difficult time.

Infusing Gratitude into Your Thanksgiving Aesthetic JEFFREY BANNON CELEBRATES 15 YEARS IN BUSINESS AND SHARES HIS FAVORITE THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITIONS Design has always captivated Jeffrey Bannon. “I’ve always loved the world of design. As a child, I would set the table for family events and holidays, and I took pride in my creativity. At 13, I started my first business: decorating neighbors’ homes and small businesses for the holidays.”
JEFFREY’S HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING TIPS: • When entertaining, I create an environment for each of our senses: a scented candle, chic music playlist, and, of course, a welcoming and humble attitude. • Put an "I'm Thankful for" place card at every setting so each guest can customize and share. • Here in the South we have the luxury of hosting Thanksgiving celebrations outdoors. One of my fondest memories is assisting a friend with a Thanksgiving Dinner at her historic home. Imagine a long farmhouse table with fresh gourds, pumpkins, and foliage spilling out across the table, with a million votive candles and a taxidermy peacock! • One of my favorite Southern traditions is to give each guest a "surcee" (an unexpected gift): perhaps a Charleston rice spoon or Woodford Reserve bourbon chocolates.
THE FALL TABLETOP TRENDS JEFFREY LOVES: • Colored glassware • Mixed textures: think colorful velvet or woven rattan pumpkins • Decorative pheasant feather placemats and napkin rings • Gold or brass anything! Even though Jeffrey is all things chic, he never forgets what his business is really about. “The best advice that I was told many years ago from a mentor was that people will not remember what they bought in your store, but they will remember how you made them feel.”
Use a mix of colors and textures this year.

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HOME + DE S I GN
A Mississippi girl with a love for the arts, Tiffany “Tipsy” Gammell can’t remember a time when she wasn’t connected to creativity, either as a champion for other young people’s talents or by her own performances on stage. She moved to Charleston, got married, and took a job at College of Charleston. When the pandemic hit, her grandmother had a stroke, so Tiffany returned home to help “her best friend” live out the last of her days at home. “She was a typical Southern grandmother. She grew blue magnolias in the front yard and pink hydrangeas in the back. She had all her milk glass on display, crystal pieces from the 50’s and 60’s, and a vintage teacup collection that we grew together. I would send her a new piece each year on her birthday.” Back to Charleston, in a creative lull with a pandemic raging around her, Tiffany had a hard time coping with her grief so she started going antique shopping. Whether she realized it or not, she was trying to hold onto the spirit of her grandmother, one purchase at a time. “I am a glass-collecting nerd,” Tiffany admits. She already had a burgeoning collection in her china cabinet. “I have always enjoyed finding a piece of glassware and figuring out its history. The oldest I own is an early American pressed glass from the 1890s.” As she amassed more pieces, she started to wonder what she was going to do with them. “I married two things I like to do a lot and came up with a sustainable approach to candles. After all, you can only put Q-Tips in so many things! Now you can reuse something beautiful by adding it to a dining table or a mantle piece, and give it a new life.” Tiffany spent a good eight months testing candles to make sure they burned right, and used clean, non-toxic ingredients. She created a line of signature scents, mindful that some customers would prefer unscented. She found the glass vessels that had been around forever were made really well and could easily support a pour of wax. “I only work with a certain thickness of glass. I do not want to ruin someone’s heirloom.” To date, Tiffany is happy to report she has never broken anything she has worked with. When she was finally ready to launch her business in 2021, Tiffany came up with the name Candle Damsel to pay homage to all owners of candles. “I thought the name was cute and classy, like my grandmother.” She announced her website on Instagram and sold all her inventory within 24 hours.

Tiffany uses a variety of glass colors, shapes, and styles.

Tiffany has a solid collection of premade candles housed in the pieces she sources and offers refills too. She has helped brides curate candles and scents for their receptions, and happily repurpose heirlooms, recalling a recent customer who was cleaning out the home of a relative who had passed and came back with glassware. “She is giving all her family members candles for Christmas.” She also offers private classes, where she comes to your home and guests can pick out their own scents and vessels. “I have done ‘friendsgivings’ and wedding brunches.”
ABOUT THE PERSON
Tiffany sources her vessels from all over. “If I have a trip planned, I tack on a couple of days to hunt.” This fall, she headed to Paris, Champagne, and the Loire Valley. I can’t wait to see what she has to offer us from her finds there and I bet you can’t either! candledamsel.com

HOTEL BENNETT’S S I G N AT U R E R E S TAU R A N T, GABRIELLE ARTICLE BY EILEEN DAILY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY HOTEL BENNETT
Chef Edgar Kano brings artistry and flair to every dish.
There’s a new chef in town, bringing finesse and perfection to Hotel Bennett’s signature restaurant, Gabrielle. Executive Chef Edgar Kano shares a little bit about his heritage, his heart, and his inspiration:
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD AND HOW YOU BECAME A STAR CHEF. I was born and raised in Mexico City. My heritage is Japanese, but I have a Mexican heart, so the Latino comes out in me and in my cooking. When I was a child, my grandmother, my Obaachan, used to live with us and she tried to teach me how to make Japanese dishes, but with Mexican ingredients. It was hard, near impossible, to get these types of fresh ingredients at that time in Mexico. So my grandmother taught me to be passionate about everything that I prepare and taste. And, of course, my link to Mexican hospitality: the phrase, “Mi casa es tu casa,” is really true, because if there’s something Mexican people are really proud of, it’s being hospitable, and they show that not only at the table, but everywhere.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE GABRIELLE’S NEW MENU? The concept and the inspiration are from Charleston’s coast. The coast is where the best of both worlds meets. You have the best seafood here in Charleston, shrimp from Mount Pleasant, and oysters from the Stono River near Folly Beach. We also utilize ingredients from the farms on John’s Island.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Ingredients. The ingredients dictate and talk to me about the menu. I don’t follow the seasons of the year. I follow the seasons of the product. The best example of this is soft shell crab season. The season lasts three and a half weeks, and that is when it will be on the menu.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR GUESTS' EXPERIENCE TO BE WHEN THEY DINE AT GABRIELLE? I want guests to feel and enjoy a reflection of Charleston on a plate and in every bite. By adding a little bit of the flair of my heritage, “I like to spice it up,” but it is the ingredients that are the most important.
Chef Kano’s favorite entree is the torgarashi swordfish.
Oysters fresh from the Stono River.
Welcome to Chef Kano’s new Gabrielle.
“Everybody asks me what my secret ingredient is,” Chef says. “Well, it’s friendship. The best meals that I’ve ever had, whether it be in the best restaurants in the world, or in the humblest little snack shacks on the beach - they were amazing because I was with friends and family — that’s what makes them taste better.”
Meticulous attention to detail makes every plate spectacular.
“That is the Gabrielle experience. Guests should feel comfortable, almost as if they were at my home and be able to enjoy the freshness of all the ingredients. My grandmother used to tell me, in Japan, “less is more.’ We do not want to put 25 ingredients in one dish that will hide the quality and the flavor of the main ingredients. On the other hand, we put a few touches here and there, that will highlight the taste and enhance the guests’ enjoyment. And in the end, it is really about the food and making it fun. So when you come to Gabrielle, you should be expecting A, to have fun, B, to feel like you’re a guest at my table.”
Chef Kano adding the final touches.
