LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Holidays!

December 2022 PUBLISHER

Katy Conicella | katy.Conicella@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Lauren McDuffie | lauren.mcduffie@citylifestyle.com

Can you believe the holidays are already here?! Every year, as this season comes around, I start to feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for the spirit it brings. I love December. It is a whirlwind of festivities, traditions and wonderment. This time of year brings back a flood of memories of my childhood and all that my parents did to make this season so special. Growing up as the second oldest of six children, the holidays were a very magical time in our house. One of my favorite memories was decorating the house with my mom — we would spend the day after Thanksgiving turning our home into the most tastefully decorated winter wonderland, no detail going unnoticed - from the wreaths, bows, garland, and lights to the ornaments and fine Christmas china that would make their annual debuts. In this month's issue, we're taking a look at the notion of giving by exploring it from a couple of different angles. We'll play with the idea of giving the experiential gift of travel as opposed to a tangible, wrapped object. We're also highlighting four dedicated and deserving local nonprofits to whom we encourage you to consider donating during this crucial time of year-end giving. What's more, we'll have some fun with classic holiday food and wine pairings with Rachel Mason of Charleston Uncorked as well as some hot holiday decor trends with Amy Romfo of The Coastal Oak. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for many, especially for those who've recently lost a loved one. My hope is that you feel love in this season and a peace that surpasses understanding and that we all remember to take care of each other - extending grace, empathy and love.

GIFT A G E TAWAY 14

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX BY GIVING THE GIFT OF TRAVEL.

These days when it comes to gift giving, there are endless options available right at our fingertips. It has never been easier or more convenient to cater to others' interests when selecting what to purchase. The sky is truly the limit during this season of giving when our homes are filled with glistening, bow-tied packages filled with ... stuff. But what if we shift our gift-giving gears a bit, and start thinking outside the box? The notion of giving experiences as opposed to material goods has become increasingly popular in recent years, and we love the thought of embracing a more adventuresome spirit when giving gifts to those we love. But what, exactly, does that look like? What does it mean to "gift a getaway?" The good news is that it can mean whatever you want. Just as there is an endless variety of "stuff" out there so, too, are there infinite possibilities when it comes to travel-based giving. For example, say you've got an enthusiastic angler on your gift list. For every fishing rod or tackle box you could wrap, there is an incredible fishing excursion waiting to be chartered. Have a loved one who enjoys camping? For every tent, sleeping bag, and insulated cooler out there, awaits an unforgettable camping (or "glamping," if you're me) experience. The gadgets and gizmos that we give may come with cool bells and whistles, but experiential gifts can come with so much more. From education and understanding to thrills, connection, and lifelong memories, getaways carry a value that goes beyond the tangible. This is the sort of deeply fulfilling satisfaction that renders travel gifts truly unforgettable. If you do it right, that is.

G E T A W A Y

Giving a getaway is a generous, thoughtful approach to gift-giving, but it isn't without its potential for mayhem and (potentially quite costly) mistakes. It's important to be ultra considerate as you plan a gift like this, from selecting the right experience or destination to how you want to actually deliver or share the gift when the time comes. Have you thought through any hidden costs or fees? Is the recipient afraid of flying or would a cruise render them totally seasick? These may seem like obvious points, but as they say - the devil's in the details. By taking the time to really think through the finer details of a getaway gift - from start to finish - you'll ensure that it is truly a gift, rather than a potential burden. Our best advice? Seek the help of a professional travel agent. Travel agents can knowledgeably tend to every nook and cranny of a travel planning experience, helping to not only avoid any gaffes or overlooked (and costly!) details but also aiding in the whole secret-keeping portion of the program. Because there's nothing like a conspicuous credit card charge or airline points number to give away your attempt at a giving away a getaway. Say that three times fast. Charleston-based luxury travel agent Catherine Lengers, CEO of NHS Voyages specializes in helping her clients do just that. Catherine is passionate about helping clients "have amazing voyage(s) by taking away the hassle ..." She appreciates that her clients are creating memories, and wants them to focus on the voyage, not the planning. Lastly, you may want to find a way to join in on the experience you're giving. Because the only thing better than a getaway is doing it with friends or family. Connection, conversation, and camaraderie are what it's all about. Presence is better than any present, to be sure. It wins every time.

Food and Wine Pairings for your Holiday Table Rachel Mason of Charleston Uncorked shares her favorite holiday wines ARTICLE BY CORLEY FRIERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED With October is nearing its end, the holiday season is rapidly approaching. Good food and great drinks are on the horizon for those who gather with family and friends to celebrate. To make the most of your upcoming festivities, we've put together a list of complementary food and wine pairings for your holiday table. To help, we got in touch with local wine connoisseur Rachel Mason for this season’s hottest wine tips. Mason is owner and creator of Charleston Uncorked, your expert resource for wine tastings and curated wine lists in the Holy City (charlestonuncorked.com)

20

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Follow along for Mason’s cheat sheet on wine and food this holiday season.

WINE FOR THE MAIN COURSE If turkey is at the head of your table, then select a chilled red wine. Your best candidate will be a medium-bodied red (like a Pinot Noir), due to its high acidity and low tannins. The ideal wine temp will be between 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit. Think cool but not cold… If a smoked brisket is your holiday centerpiece, then a California Zinfandel from Lodi is your best match.

CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C H A R L E STO N S C

21

This glass of Zin contains notes of smokiness and chocolate which will highlight your smoked brisket. Don’t know where to start? Try the 2018 Lodi Zinfandel by Zinfandelic. Its full-bodied flavor plus funky label make it an easy pick! If the classic honey ham is your go-to, then a French Grenache is the one for you. This red wine is of the dry variety and has notes of cinnamon and cherry, complementary to the sweetness of the ham. Look for a bottle from Rhône, a southern region in France.

SIDE DISH WINE PAIRINGS For those looking to complement cranberry sauce, select a chilled red wine. Pick one with a cranberry undertone, so that their flavor and aroma will pair perfectly. Look for a Pinot Noir from a cooler region, like Angelo Negro Vino Rosso “The Piedmont Guy”. For the Latke lovers, sparkling wine will be your drink of choice. The lightness of the vino will balance out the oily texture and richness of the fried potato. Some top choices would be Crement de Bourgone, Champagne, or Cava. For a compliment to that side of cornbread, pour out an Oaked Chardonnay. This wine will hold up to the fatty and rich qualities of the cornbread, making it an excellent compliment to this lowcountry staple. For guests manifesting financial success this new year (those enjoying a side of collard greens), sip on a Riesling or Chenin Blanc. These wines are high in acid with some sweetness to break through the fat of collard greens.

DESSERT WINE PAIRINGS If pumpkin pie is your dessert selection, then a glass of Sautrenes will be your match. This french dessert wine has touches of honey, raisin, and caramel which will compliment the pie’s nutmeg and cinnamon flavors.

22

Good food and great drinks are on the horizon for those who gather with family and friends to celebrate.

BEST PARTY FAVOR WINE Not everyone can be The Host, some of us are simply guests at the holiday table. We supply love and support, and sometimes we even bring a bottle of wine along with us. If you’re looking to be a standout party guest, Mason’s personal holiday favorite would be a bottle of Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenber Riesling Spatlese. This outstanding and slightly sweet wine pairs well with almost anything, making it the perfect addition to any gathering.

Giving to Those Who Give Back HERE ARE FOUR DESERVING, DEDICATED, AND DETERMINED LOCAL NONPROFITS WE LOVE TO SUPPORT. The giving spirit grabs hold of most everyone during the last few months of each year, as the holidays cultivate a sense of generosity, all season long. Looking beyond the shiny packages, it's also imperative we seek ways to give back by supporting the non-profits that do so much for this community.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
