I am thankful for many things. Within that long list is Charleston. As someone who works in the field of luxury vacation rentals and as a freelance photographer, I am fortunate enough to have witnessed a host of breathtaking places where I have captured some amazing photos. But I can honestly say that Charleston continues to be my favorite. I’ve resided here for just over a year and it still surprises me that I live in a place that continues to offer so much. And if you’re

thinking that my affinity for Charleston is just a new shine luster, ask those who have been here for years or decades. I can almost guarantee they feel the same way. Most days you will find me behind the camera weaving my way through Charleston streets, marshes, beaches, waterways, and undisturbed swaths of land that I swear, if you listen closely enough, beg you to tell their story. I am fortunate enough to have photographed many wonders in my short time here

including the old wooden Folly Pier just before it was dismantled to make room for a new one, the most stunning sunset I have ever seen on James Island, the iconic Angel Oak on Johns Island, the beautiful architecture of the Ravenel Bridge (from the upper deck and the water below), and what seems to be an infinite number of oak avenues, each of whose majesty is so great it makes you want to linger for hours. I have always been captivated by change and transition and how easily something can become something else right before your eyes. So, what I have come to love, as a photographer and observer, is the way downtown Charleston transitions each Thursday morning as tourists begin to arrive for the weekend. In an instant, quaint asphalt and cobblestone streets, ones that feel

untouched, suddenly overflow with thousands of shuffling feet anxious to take in as much as they can before the weekend is over. And I often hope they find as much joy in this place as I do, even if their time here is short. November always makes me feel thankful. So, I intentionally take moments to appreciate the things that bring me joy including the place that others dream to visit and that I get to live in each day. As a native New Englander, I will always have an affinity for the beauty of fall and first snowfall. They are things that naturally feel like home. With that said, it is now hard to imagine calling anywhere but Charleston home. It truly is a special place and one with infinite possibility. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite photos of Charleston.

Located on the shady, tucked away corner of Bogard and Ashe Streets in Downtown Charleston’s Elliotborough neighborhood, Vern’s is an intimate and inviting bistro serving up modern American cuisine from husband and wife duo Bethany and Daniel “Dano” Heinze. The restaurant represents the culmination of their years of experience working in lauded restaurants around the country, including the now-closed Charleston institution McCrady’s, as well as Animal and Son of a Gun in Los Angeles. Named in honor of Executive Chef Dano’s grandfather, Vern’s sports a menu that reflects the couple’s time spent living in Charleston, their move to Southern California, and their travels throughout Europe. Chef Dano’s return to the Lowcountry feels much like a homecoming, and with him he brings fresh ideas and culinary inspiration, illustrated by his emphasis on of-the-moment seasonal ingredients, shareable plates, and simple preparations. The building dates back to the late 1800s and housed a corner grocery store until 1958, when it was converted into The Patio Famous Tea Room and then later, Trattoria Lucca. Drawing inspiration from the Heinzes’ travels, the interiors are warm and inviting and evoke an upscale, yet unpretentious, bistro atmosphere with seating for 40. Decorative touches include original hardwood flooring, plastered walls, globe light fixtures, antique mirrors, rustic French chairs, and a repurposed window that bridges the dining room and kitchen. The dining room is anchored by a gleaming marble-topped bar, which offers an additional six seats. Inspired by the couple’s travels throughout Europe and time spent living in Southern California, the menu at Vern’s showcases new American cuisine through shareable plates and simple preparations focused on hyper-seasonal ingredients and products from local purveyors. Using the seasons as the guiding force, the menu is sorted into snacks and small plates, followed by entrée offerings of pastas and proteins, a selection of vegetable-forward sides, and a curated selection of desserts. Standout dishes include Yellowfin Tuna Crudo with Calabrian Chili and Lemon, Gnocchetti Sardi with Walnut Arugula Pesto, and Roast Poussin with Brown Butter Jus and Dandelion. Vern’s beverage program focuses on a variety of small wine producers committed to organic and biodynamic practices. WHAT IS STRETCH ZONE ALL ABOUT? CAN YOU EXPLAIN FOR US WHAT THE "STRETCH ZONE METHOD" MEANS? We provide a service called practitioner-assisted stretching where we work one-on-one with individuals through stretches tailored specifically to their needs. We are unique because we are the only company in the world that has a certification behind our Method. All of our employees have at least a degree in Exercise Science or Kinesiology, alongside we all go through our certification process. We also have a strap kit system that is patented to our company that allows for complete stabilization and isolation of the muscle/tendon for each stretch. It allows for a much safer and deeper stretch than you can achieve on your own.

WHAT CAN PATRONS EXPECT WHEN THEY ARRIVE? HOW DOES A TYPICAL SESSION WORK? We offer a complimentary consultation, which includes a FREE 30-minute stretch, for every local resident to experience our service firsthand. In that session, patrons should expect to be with us for about an hour from start to finish. We first go over the individual’s health history and goals to allow us to tailor the 30-minute stretch specific to their needs.

WHAT TYPES OF CLIENTS DO YOU SEE MOST OFTEN AND/OR WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD MOST BENEFIT FROM YOUR SERVICES? Our service helps all walks of life, whether it be a client suffering from a stroke or an avid athlete. Our most common clients are golfers and tennis players. Our most common ailment is lower back pain.

IS CHARLESTON HOME? DO YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS? I grew up here in Mt. Pleasant. Both of my parents were in the military so I moved here when I was six and have been here since. I have my undergrad in Exercise Science from USC, as well as my Master’s in Exercise Science from The Citadel.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS VENTURE? HOW DID YOUR OWNERSHIP COME TO BE? WE'D LOVE TO LEARN THE BACKSTORY ABOUT HOW YOU FOUND YOUR WAY TO THIS ARENA. Yes, this is my first business venture. I started out with Stretch Zone as the General Manager of our Coleman Boulevard location. I worked for the previous owner for about five years. Halfway in, I sat her down and told her if she was ever interested in selling the business, that I hoped I would be her first conversation. We had the conversation about two years ago and here we are I took over September of 2021.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS BUSINESS/JOB? I love how rewarding the job is! There is no better feeling than changing people's lives and making them feel better. I love how much our business has become a family with the community as well.

DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO OPEN ANY MORE STRETCH ZONE LOCATIONS? Yes, we plan to open in Summerville mid-2023.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE THE POET LAUREATE OF A CITY? It means that I am a voice for the arts, and I have the privilege of creating opportunities for others. It also means that I am asked to write poems for specific events and institutions. The most impactful part of my work is being in schools and leading poetry workshops. Honestly, when I got the title, I immediately thought, How can I use this position to better the work of others? Any sort of accolade comes with a hyper-charged ego, so I wanted to be aware of that and make sure that I didn't just use this for my own personal gain. Being poet laureate was a lovely validation of my work and worth. It also helped me strengthen my voice, and gave me the resources I needed to amplify the voice of others.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST? I am infinitely inspired by language, and how playful it can be. Figurative language pulls the color out of words, and I am obsessed with finding flamboyant ways to say something that is mundane. I'm also inspired by vulnerability. It's wonderful to share a safe space with people who are willing to let their shadow side come out to play.

YOU WROTE, RECORDED, AND PRODUCED YOUR NEW CHILLHOP ALBUM, "KEPT AND LET GO OF" FROM HOME. WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL WRITING PROCESS LIKE? My writing process has shifted and changed over the years. I never believed that I was in control of my creativity, so I used to wait for the inspiration to happen. Now I realize that I have some power over what can come out of me, so I am much more intentional about creating space to be an artist. The writing process is all about removing distraction. It's also about

not getting in the way of what is happening. If inspiration comes when I'm on a bike ride, then I stop on the side of the road and make a note in my phone. If inspiration comes in a dream, then I wake up and document it. I have a fluid relationship with it all.

MUSIC AND POETRY HAVE SUCH A NATURALLY SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP, AND YOU'VE WOVEN THE TWO ART FORMS TOGETHER IN YOUR WORK SO BEAUTIFULLY. WHICH CAME FIRST FOR YOU? Music was first. It was my initial entry into being a creative. I had many cassette tapes and CDs when I was a kid, and I studied every inch of them: the design, the smell of the booklet, the tactile nature of it all. It was all very sexy to me, so I decided to write and record songs on cassette tapes. Those tapes of music are my most prized possessions.

MANY WRITERS SAY THAT THEY DON'T KNOW HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT SOMETHING UNTIL THEY SIT DOWN TO WRITE, THEIR OPINIONS, THOUGHTS, AND IDEAS TAKING SHAPE AS THE PROCESS MOVES AND EVOLVES. DOES THAT NOTION APPLY TO YOU? OR, RATHER, DO YOU SIT DOWN WITH A CLEARER PICTURE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY BEFORE YOU PUT PEN TO PAGE? Writing, for me, is a healthy way to unpack and process an event. That event can be happy or traumatic. But writing has always helped me to get out of my head and see a situation for what it really is. For me, poems are compact therapy sessions. My knee-jerk reactions are not my poetic reactions. That’s because poetry allows me to be real. It most definitely helps me to see something with a clearer lens.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE THAT YOU COULD SHARE WITH OTHERS WHO'D LIKE TO PUBLISH THEIR WRITING? Oh yes. Publishing is a topic that I am attracted to, so I'm happy to answer this question. Keep in mind that I am an expert of nothing, so don't take this advice as the Word: • Before you publish, give yourself permission to be absurd on paper. Play with language. Make experimental poems. Make up a poetic form and be the master of it. All of these things will help you become stronger in your voice. • Don't share all of your work with everyone. Keep things to yourself. Your perception of a poem might change if someone doesn't like it, or if someone thinks it's the best poem in the world. • Self-publish a book of your work, if you can. It's a wonderful option for writers. The old school rules of publishing weren't written with modern-day poets in mind. Self-publishing is a great tool for all of us.

A STICKY-SWEET ONE-PAN DINNER

ingredients: • 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken leg quarters • 1 pineapple, cored and sliced into 1/2-inch rings or spears • 1/4 cup store-bought hot honey • 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 1 tablespoon paprika • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar • Salt and pepper, as needed • 3/4 cup chopped fresh herbs, for serving (such as chives, parsley, and dill) • 1 shallot, thinly sliced • Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling on top (optional)

prep time: 1 hour (marination time)

cook time: 55 minutes

total time: about 2 hours

directions: In a large baking dish, arrange the chicken and pineapple in an even layer. Mix together the honey, mustard, soy sauce, paprika, garlic powder, and vinegar in a bowl and pour all over the chicken and pineapple. Rub to coat evenly and put the dish in the fridge to marinate (covered or not), for at least 1 hour and up to 4. Preheat the oven to 425ºF. Season everything with salt and pepper. Cover with aluminum foil and roast for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and roast 30-35 minutes more, until cooked through and deeply browned. Serve the chicken with the drippings, chopped herbs and sliced shallot.
