Welcome Home

There’s something about home that feels especially personal here in Chandler. Maybe it’s the way neighbors still wave hello, or how a house so often doubles as a gathering place—for family dinners, backyard celebrations, and quiet moments that anchor our days. For this Home Issue, we wanted to explore not just beautiful spaces, but the stories, craftsmanship, and community that turn houses into something more meaningful.

You’ll step inside a beloved family home in Fulton Ranch that redefines lakeside luxury living and learn about its history. Tip: As of our print date, it was for sale, so run, don’t walk!

We also visit a Sun Lakes sanctuary that has been beautifully reimagined by Whyte House Design. The transformation is a reminder that a home isn’t static; it grows and evolves with us. With the right vision, even familiar spaces can feel entirely new again.

Home, of course, extends beyond our front doors. Downtown Ocotillo continues to evolve as a neighborhood hub, and we’re spotlighting two exciting new culinary concepts—Lucca Coastal Kitchen and Bonsai—that are raising the bar on local dining. From handmade pasta to fresh sushi, these restaurants are the kind of places that quickly feel like an extension of your own kitchen table, where memories are made over great food.

To round out the issue, we turned to trusted local experts for home trends and practical tips—from electrical upgrades that enhance both safety and style, to shutters and blinds that balance beauty and function, to statement-making iron doors and gates that elevate curb appeal while adding peace of mind. These are the details that quietly, but powerfully, shape how a home feels.

Whether you’re renovating, redecorating, or simply savoring the place you already love, we hope this issue inspires you to see home not just as a destination, but as a reflection of who you are and where you live. Chandler, after all, is home.

Yours,

March 2026

AN ISLAND OASIS

When Dr. Luis Lu and his wife, Laura, decided to move to Arizona from the East Coast in the early 2010s to be closer to their adult children, they wanted a place that provided the same small-town serenity that they had found in their hometown in Pennsylvania.

“We searched carefully for a place that felt right,” the Lus recall.

Their house hunt brought them to Chandler and the growing community of Fulton Ranch.

“It felt peaceful, safe, and full of promise,” the couple note.

Built as a “community of communities” beginning in the early 2000s, Fulton Ranch is a luxury master-planned development in Chandler situated between Alma School Road and Arizona Avenue at Ocotillo and Chandler Heights roads. Despite being located in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, the community’s defining characteristic is water. A 28-acre system of lakes, streams, and waterfalls winds through 520 acres of neighborhoods and gated subdivisions with names such as Shoreline, Aegean Cove, and Ocotillo Lakes.

In the center of it all, almost completely encircled by sparkling water, is a verdant oasis called The Island. This gated enclave features 64 of the most desirable homes in the region. Showcasing lush green lawns and

classic Mission Revival-influenced architecture, the exclusive estates offer resort-style living coveted by house hunters across the Valley.

“Every time we came to the area, my husband would say, ‘Oh, I love the lakes. I want to purchase a home here,’” Mrs. Lu says. “At the time, there were maybe eight of the 64 lots built. They told us it would take one year to build, but that was impossible for us to do while being in Pennsylvania.”

In 2012, the couple were driving around The Island when they spied a Realtor coming out of a front door with a “for sale” sign. It was fate. The Lus later learned that Ira Fulton himself, founder of Fulton Homes and Fulton Ranch, designed and personally oversaw the development of the house for his best friend’s daughter. Fulton lived just a few doors down.

“We often saw Mr. Fulton sitting by the road, quietly looking at the home,” the Lus remember. “It was clear how special this place was to him—and that made it even more meaningful to us.”

“Fulton Ranch offered us not just a house, but a sense of belonging, continuity, and home.”
—Dr. Luis Lu

They moved in in 2014.

Heavy arched wood entry doors open to a double-height sitting room. An oversized Cantera stone fireplace commands attention. It’s complemented by a massive custom tiered chandelier that glistens in the natural light streaming through a series of clerestory windows. A second living room behind the fireplace offers plenty of space for entertaining, family activities, and relaxing.

Both lead to a large open kitchen, complete with a center island. Dark wood cabinetry and golden granite bring old-world elegance to the space. Top-of-the-line Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, including double ovens and a 36-inch gas stovetop, are fit for a professional chef.

While the common spaces are impressive, the ground-floor owner's suite is where this house really shines. More than a bedroom, it’s an apartment-size retreat. Plush wall-to-wall carpeting designates the sleeping area, which is large enough for a king bed and multiple seating arrangements. French doors open to another large room that is ideal for a private TV room, an exercise or yoga room, or even a home office.

The space connects to the expansive en suite bathroom as well as the outdoor pool patio. The home’s old-world aesthetic continues in the en suite, which features his-and-hers sinks, a separate makeup vanity, and large his-and-hers closets. Polished travertine, golden granite, and

dark wood cabinetry anchor the space. A smaller version of the living room Cantera stone fireplace is fronted by a freestanding soaking tub for the ultimate in luxurious pampering.

A second ground-floor suite and two suites upstairs complete the sleeping arrangements.

Over the years, the Lus added their own personal touches to the home, upgrading many of its design elements, such as all-new lighting, custom millwork, and pre-framing space for a future wine closet, and even adding additional square footage. These enhancements are especially prominent outdoors, where the backyard has been transformed from nice to wow.

At the core of the yard, the large rectangular pool is flanked by date and sago palms, creating a tropical resort vibe. The Lus added an outdoor kitchen to the pergola, as well as a second guest casita. The new

architecture mimics the home’s original design, allowing the addition to blend seamlessly and appear as though it has been there since day one.

“The space that I like the most is the backyard,” Dr. Lu says. “It looks like a resort, and it’s very, very private.”

Mrs. Lu adds, “My husband used to go swimming every day after work.”

Now, however, it’s time for the Lus to pass along their love of The Island to a new homeowner.

“I’ve always been impressed with Fulton Ranch,” Dr. Lu says. “It’s very quiet and there are nice areas where you can stroll around and enjoy the design. And everyone is smiling and saying hello. Fulton Ranch offered us not just a house, but a sense of belonging, continuity, and home.”

FRESH CONCEPTS

Bonsai

FROM HANDMADE PASTA TO FRESH SUSHI, TWO NEW DOWNTOWN OCOTILLO CONCEPTS RAISE THE BAR ON NEIGHBORHOOD DINING

In Downtown Ocotillo, longtime restaurateur and developer Spike Lawrence is steering two beloved restaurant spaces into fresh new concepts, guided by evolving customer tastes, culinary trends, and a strong sense of community connection.

What was once Sea & Smoke has reopened as Lucca Coastal Kitchen (LuccaChandler.com), while The Living Room has become Lucca Living Room, a casual, lounge-like space with the same Italian influences. Nearby favorite Rock Lobster has been reimagined as Bonsai ( BonsaiChandler.com)—all conveniently located at 2475 W. Queen Creek Road in Chandler.

FROM SEA & SMOKE TO LUCCA COASTAL KITCHEN

Inspired by the Tuscan region of Italy, interior design companies Palm and Mountain Design and Staging and Whyte House Design worked in tandem to reimagine the former Sea & Smoke space. Lucca Coastal Kitchen’s dramatic transformation showcases a refined Italian aesthetic, featuring elevated finishes, warm tones, and thoughtful design elements meant to transport diners to the heart of Italy.

The adjacent lounge—formerly known as The Living Room—is also being reimagined, with plans for a new circular bar, live music, and a more social, lounge-driven atmosphere.

Accompanying the new name and look, the new menu blends Italian classics with succulent seafood, paying homage to Sea & Smoke’s legacy.

“You’ll still see the sea bass, halibut, oysters, and clams,” Lawrence says. “But you’ll also see the bolognese, chicken parmesan, eggplant parmesan, and meatballs.”

Everything at Lucca is cooked over a wood-fired mesquite grill, and all pasta is made fresh on-site using locally sourced flour.

Both Lucca Coastal Kitchen and the lounge operate together, offering brunch, lunch, dinner, and late-night dining under the Lucca name.

ROCK LOBSTER BECOMES BONSAI

Just steps away, Rock Lobster has been fully reinvented as Bonsai, a Japanese-inspired restaurant centered on quality, freshness, and craftsmanship—both on the plate and throughout the space.

Lucca Coastal Kitchen

dip it into specialty sauces, transforming dinner into an exciting and unique experience.

“WHEN YOU THINK OF A BONSAI TREE, YOU THINK OF THE CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO IT. THAT’S HOW WE APPROACH OUR FOOD CREATION.”

At the heart of the concept is a commitment to clean ingredients. Bonsai sources wild-caught fish that is transported from the coast and delivered fresh to Phoenix Sky Harbor before reaching the restaurant, ensuring sushi that prioritizes freshness and quality.

While Bonsai retains some of Rock Lobster’s most popular rolls, the menu has been refined and expanded to include new sushi rolls and Asian-inspired entrées designed to elevate the dining experience. One standout addition is an interactive hot rock Wagyu dish, where guests cook thinly sliced beef tableside and

Visually, Bonsai represents a complete departure from its former identity. Redesigned by Palm and Mountain Design and Staging, the space features warm green and brown tones and is anchored by a striking bonsai tree at the center of the dining room—serving as both a focal point and a symbol of the restaurant’s philosophy.

“When you think of a bonsai tree, you think of the craftsmanship that goes into it,” Lawrence says. “That’s how we approach our food creation.”

Today, Bonsai aims to be a social, community-driven dining destination—a place where guests can gather, share plates, and experience sushi made with care.

A LOCALLY CREATED DINING HUB

Despite the extensive redesigns, Lawrence emphasizes that Lucca Coastal Kitchen and Bonsai are part of the shared vision of Downtown Ocotillo that champions locally owned businesses, which strive to bring the community together through food and shared experiences.

“You show up and see neighbors, meet new neighbors,” he says.

That sense of community—combined with quality, creativity, and hospitality—is exactly what Lawrence hopes guests take away from every visit.

“We want them to feel the local spirit on every visit and feel excited about coming back again soon,” he says.

REIMAGINED BY WHYTE HOUSE DESIGN

A SUN LAKES SANCTUARY

ARTICLE BY LISA WHYTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOLLY WENTE

THIS SUN LAKES RENOVATION BLENDS WARMTH, TEXTURE, AND THOUGHTFUL DETAILS TO CREATE A TRUE SANCTUARY.

When the homeowners discovered their home in the community of Sun Lakes, they immediately recognized its potential. While the layout and location were ideal, the finishes were dated and ready for thoughtful updating. Rather than seeing limitations, the homeowners were drawn to the opportunity to make the home entirely their own. They partnered with Whyte House Design (WhyteHouse.co) to transform the space into both a peaceful retreat and a welcoming place for gathering with family.

The renovation began with a full reset. Dated flooring was removed throughout the home, along with old cabinetry and heavy fireplaces that no longer reflected the homeowners’ lifestyle. This clean slate allowed the design to unfold intentionally, creating a warm and cohesive aesthetic that flows seamlessly from room to room.

A beautiful mid-tone hardwood now runs throughout the home, grounding each space and creating a sense of continuity. In the kitchen and entertaining areas, custom walnut cabinetry is paired with painted black cabinets and natural stone countertops, striking a balance between warmth and contrast. Architectural features were reimagined to feel sculptural and inviting. A Roman clay hood introduces texture and softness in the kitchen, while a matching Roman clay fireplace creates a complementary focal point in the living area.

Beyond aesthetics, functionality was carefully considered at every step of the renovation. Storage solutions were thoughtfully integrated to support everyday living while maintaining a clean and uncluttered look. Cabinetry layouts were customized to

maximize efficiency, and durable materials were selected to ensure longevity without sacrificing style. Every design choice was guided by how the homeowners wanted to experience their space, from quiet mornings at home to evenings spent entertaining loved ones.

Entertaining was central to the homeowners’ vision, and a custom bar area quickly became one of the home’s most inviting spaces. Glass tile adds subtle shimmer and depth, while floating shelves keep the area light and open. A waterfall island anchors the bar and naturally draws guests in, creating a space that encourages connection, conversation, and celebration.

Lighting also played a key role in shaping the overall atmosphere of the home. Layered lighting was used throughout to create warmth and flexibility, allowing each space to transition easily from day to night. Subtle accent lighting highlights architectural features and material textures, while statement fixtures add personality and visual interest. Together, these elements help create a home that feels inviting at all hours and supports both relaxed living and lively gatherings.

Each bathroom received a complete transformation, continuing the thoughtful design story throughout the home. The primary suite was reimagined as a calming retreat with neutral flooring, fluted tile on an accent wall, and marble tile accents that lend a quiet sense of luxury.

Just as important was creating spaces that felt welcoming for the entire family. With grandchildren often visiting, the upstairs bathroom was designed with a playful touch. Green picket tile brings personality and color, while modern lighting adds a fresh and contemporary feel, creating a space that is both fun and functional.

This Sun Lakes renovation reflects Whyte House Design’s belief that a home should be both beautiful and deeply livable. By blending timeless materials, thoughtful contrasts, and personal details, the result is a home that feels like a true sanctuary, designed for connection, comfort, and the memories still to come.

Construction was completed by QCH Interiors.

HOME TRENDS AND TIPS

From Lighting to Gates to Shutters and Electrical, Here’s the Scoop on 2026 From Service Industry Professionals

EVERYTHING ELECTRIC

Modern Technology and Future-Proofing With Blue State Electric LLC

Chandler-based Blue State Electric LLC is an electrical contracting company established in 2015 that focuses primarily on service work. The company’s owners, Perla and Teodulo Galaviz, opened with a clear goal in mind: to provide reliable, high-quality electrical solutions while delivering exceptional customer service and safety-driven workmanship.

The services cover a wide range of residential and commercial electrical needs, including troubleshooting and repairs, electrical panel upgrades, lighting installations (both interior and exterior), EV charger installations, dedicated circuits, and code-compliant upgrades. They also work closely with homeowners, property managers, and business owners to provide practical solutions tailored to each project.

TREND: Modern Technology and Future-Proofing

“One of the biggest trends we’re seeing in people’s homes is the growing focus on comfort, safety, and future-proofing through electrical upgrades. Homeowners are becoming much more aware of how their electrical systems affect daily life—whether it’s reliable power, proper lighting, or having the capacity to support modern technology,” says Perla, who

shares that they are seeing an increased demand for panel upgrades, EV-charger installations, and dedicated circuits as homes take on more electrical loads than ever before.

Lighting design has become a major priority.

“Homeowners are investing in layered lighting— recessed, accent, and exterior lighting—to create spaces that feel both functional and welcoming, while also improving energy efficiency with LED technology,” she says.

TIP: Don’t Wait Until Something Fails

From a maintenance and safety standpoint, many homeowners are realizing the importance of proactive electrical inspections, especially in older homes. A simple inspection can identify overloaded panels, outdated wiring, or missing safety protections before they become a serious issue.

“My biggest tip for homeowners is not to wait until something fails,” Perla says. “Upgrading and maintaining your electrical system improves comfort, protects your home, and ensures it’s ready for today’s technology and tomorrow’s needs. Electrical work isn’t just about power—it’s about creating a safer, more comfortable home.”

THE DOOR TO VALUE

My Iron Door Company Offers the Latest in Stunning Doors

Troy Jarvis didn’t originally think he’d end up in the door business. But as often happens with fate, life intervened and led him there.

Jarvis has been in the real estate business for more than 30 years. After several years of doing fix-and-flips, he realized that the home changes that created the most value for a home were replacing the front door with an iron door and installing a large glass accordion door in the back so the home could open as an indoor-outdoor space.

Eventually, he had his own company, which he named My Iron Door Company. Today, it has locations in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah, all offering a large selection of doors, from front doors to patio

doors to accordion doors and more. The company also creates custom doors.

“I love having a product that creates three things,” Jarvis says. “Aesthetics, which increases the value of homes, security—with these, you don’t need a separate security door, and last, an option beyond a fiberglass or wood door for Arizona.”

TREND: Security and Aesthetics

“Iron doors have amazing security. You really can’t break in, and so that’s a big trend. Regarding aesthetics, iron doors don’t break down like a fiberglass or wood door. And iron doors, compared to any other doors, create more value in your home,” Jarvis says. MyIronDoorCompany.com

GATE-KEEPING

Renovate Your Gate is There From Gate Fixes to Gate Enlargements

Renovate Your Gate, which is celebrating its sixth anniversary this month, began by offering simple gate fixes like new stained wood boards, a new paint job, and gate adjustments so that HOAs were happy with nice-looking gates. The company is family-owned, with owner/operator James Lewis and his son, Trent, fabricating gates; James’ wife Heather handling phone calls, appointment-setting, and overall customer satisfaction; and Heather’s father, Dale, handling estimates and new business. Employee

Carlos has been with them for over four years, and handles gate installations.

TREND: Gate Enlargements

“Shortly after starting up we found a demand for gate enlargements ... turning a single gate or even a narrow double gate into a large double gate so homeowners can store their trailer, boats, or RVs at their house. Since then, we primarily do new custom fabricated gates in all shapes, sizes, and designs,” says James.

Where Design Meets Heart

BY THE YARD DESIGNERS SHARE HOW THOUGHTFUL DESIGN BECOMES A LASTING GIFT OF COMFORT AND CONNECTION

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JETT ARREDONDO

HELENA HILL

“For me, design is about giving each client their own individual sense of home. People often ask what’s trending, but trends come and go—and they don’t always create spaces that feel personal or lasting. What matters most is crafting environments that feel deeply connected to the people who live in them. My clients inspire me the most. Each one, with their own story, gives my work meaning. Getting to know them—seeing

their inspiration photos and the fabrics, patterns, and textures they’re drawn to—helps me create spaces that truly bring them joy. I’ve always loved the light, airy, and colorful aesthetic of Santa Barbara. It captures a balance of ease and vibrancy that I aim to bring into every project. My hope is that when clients step into their finished space, they feel happiness, warmth, and a genuine sense of belonging.”

COLLEEN SIMON

“My design style blends classic and transitional elements to create spaces that feel timeless. I focus on clean lines, balanced proportions, and refined details—an elegant aesthetic that feels both sophisticated and inviting. Every element serves a purpose, coming together to create harmony and balance within a space. What truly inspires me are the people I design for. Every project is an opportunity to give something meaningful back—to

create spaces that reflect each client as an individual. I aim for designs that are not only visually striking but also thoughtfully tailored to the way they live and work. I’ve always had a soft spot for patterned fabrics and warm color palettes—especially teals and terracottas—because they bring a sense of life and joy into a room. My goal is always to design spaces that feel like an embrace—welcoming, comfortable, and full of heart.”

ANNETTE BOSTON HALE

“I would describe my design style as eclectic and bold— clean lines with a touch of flair. I love creating spaces that feel sophisticated and balanced, where every detail adds something meaningful to the whole and reflects a sense of confidence and individuality. Collaboration is truly the best part of what I do. I’m constantly inspired by the opportunity to merge a client’s personal style with my own design vision. Together, we create something that feels authentic—something that reflects who they are

while still feeling fresh, refined, and elevated. I’m drawn to a sophisticated, monochromatic aesthetic where black and white form the foundation and warm neutrals add depth and elegance. The result is a space that feels both high-end and livable. My hope is that when people experience my designs, they feel excited, energized, and accomplished—but also grounded and safe.”
