LIFESTYLE LETTER
A Healthy Lifestyle Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in relationships, health, or business, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. Consider this: You wouldn’t go on vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal. Similarly, indulging in a rich milkshake from the MilkShake Factory Chandler Ocotillo or a churro from Dulce Churro Café isn’t an everyday event, but it’s a delicious treat now and then. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Try the workout moves perfect for home featured in this issue, relax at Aji Spa, and prioritize your mental health. Don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy 2026—we’re rooting for you! Yours,

“While I absolutely love teaching group reformer classes, I truly believe you can get an incredible workout right at home on the mat. There are so many creative and effective ways to move your body without any equipment at all, and Pilates is accessible, versatile, and powerful wherever you are.” — B E L E N B E N W AY- P I C H E
As a local fitness instructor and a fitness influencer (find her on Instagram at @belenpiche), Belen Benway-Piche sees firsthand how powerful this form of exercise can be. Benway-Piche began her movement-teaching journey three years ago in Chicago, where she first taught yoga before transitioning to Pilates. “Since then, I’ve immersed myself in the full spectrum of the Pilates method—mat reformer, chair, tower, and jumpboard—and I find so much joy in helping clients connect more deeply with their bodies,” she says, adding that she and her husband moved from Chicago to the East Valley last year, shortly
after they welcomed their first son, Blaise. “While I absolutely love teaching group reformer classes, I truly believe you can get an incredible workout right at home on the mat. There are so many creative and effective ways to move your body without any equipment at all, and Pilates is accessible, versatile, and powerful wherever you are.” Benway-Piche created a quick 12-minute Pilates workout that you can do at home—no equipment needed. “It’s a perfect way to start your day with movement. If you love these exercises, I’d be excited to see you in a group class!” she says. CONTINUED >

Muscle Matters: Improving Women’s Health ON GLP-1S? WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Over the past year, three topics have dominated wellness news: weight-loss drugs, protein, and pumping iron. From the sudden shrinking of celebrities to social media influencers showcasing their gym routines and sharing single meals with 200-plus grams of protein, to the casual observer, it would appear as if we’ve become a nation of health addicts. But why are we so obsessed with these issues? To learn more, we reached out to Dr. Yasmin Rahimi (Dr. Yas), a chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner. Dr. Yas is the founder of BackFit Health + Spine, a Valley-wide chain with 12 medical centers that offer an integrative approach to wellness that includes everything from traditional chiropractic care to physical therapy, acupuncture, allergy treatment, hormone optimization, and even diet and weight loss. One area that’s especially important to Dr. Yas is muscle mass maintenance in women. Whether her patients are taking a GLP-1 for weight loss or struggling to stay fit during menopause, she emphasizes the benefits of building and maintaining muscles for better health.
IS IT TRUE THAT GLP-1S CAUSE MUSCLE LOSS? There’s a misconception that GLP-1s waste your muscles. What’s really happening is that people aren’t eating properly when they’re on a GLP-1. Instead of changing what they’re eating, they just eat less, and that’s the problem. They are not changing their nutrition intake but are still eating the same

ultra-processed and low-nutrient, lowprotein foods. We like to see patients change what they’re eating to a more protein-forward diet. Women, especially, should eat the minimum recommended grams of protein. That’s going to help maintain their muscle. HOW MUCH PROTEIN SHOULD WOMEN EAT? The average American woman weighs 150 pounds and is 5-foot, 4-inches tall. For her to maintain muscle and metabolic resilience, she needs a minimum of 100 grams of protein per day in her diet. Ideally, it should be 1 gram per every pound of ideal body weight, but that’s very difficult. Most people, especially if they’re on a GLP-1, just can’t eat that much. As long as you hit 100 grams, you’ll maintain your muscle and become metabolically resilient. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE METABOLICALLY RESILIENT? It means that you are not spiking your insulin, and you're not increasing the amount of sugar. Protein is made up of amino acids, and amino acids are what build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more your muscle acts like a sugar sponge. If you have a lot of muscle on your frame, you're able to eat anything because your body, your muscle, will absorb the sugar like a sponge. This allows you to be metabolically flexible and resilient. If a person does not have enough muscle on their frame, there's nowhere for any of the carbohydrates or any of the sugars to get processed and stored as glycogen. So what happens is sugar gets dumped into the bloodstream, and that's when we start to get the initial lab markers of high A1c levels, and then eventually get diagnosed with pre-diabetes, followed by diabetes. ARE PROTEIN POWDERS, DRINKS, OR SUPPLEMENTS EFFECTIVE? I always recommend that people eat real food, but sometimes it's hard to meet [daily protein goals] when you're eating real food. If you must supplement with a protein powder, then make sure to look CONTINUED >

at the label for isolated whey or hydrolyzed beef or a minimally processed pea protein. Try to use one that only has maybe three or four ingredients at best, with minimal sugar and minimal chemicals. I wouldn’t skip a meal and drink a shake instead, but if you can't get your dietary protein amounts through your meals, then adding a shake here or there in addition to your meals in order to meet that extra 30 grams is always a good idea. IN ADDITION TO BEING USED FOR WEIGHT LOSS, CAN GLP-1S HELP WOMEN GOING THROUGH MENOPAUSE? A GLP-1, when microdosed correctly, can be absolutely crucial in managing inflammation, cognitive support, and body recomposition. As we go through perimenopause and menopause, our gut microbiome changes, and we lose those naturally occurring peptides. And then, on top of that, we've got a lowering of estrogen. Estrogen is the inhibitor of inflammatory cytokines that float around in the body, blocking the inflammation from setting in. Less estrogen means increased inflammatory markers, then increased triglycerides. Finally, it snowballs into having gut dysbiosis and insulin resistance. In small doses, GLP-1s help prevent the pre-diabetes that occurs with perimenopause and menopause. It is also very cardio-protective.
28
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
DO WOMEN WHO TAKE GLP-1S TO TREAT MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS NEED TO WORRY ABOUT MUSCLE MASS? Women who are going through perimenopause and menopause should be strength training and eating protein whether they are taking a GLP-1 or not. The average woman gains about 5 to 8 pounds during menopause because she’s not addressing her dietary intake and she’s not adding progressive overload strength training to her routine. Instead, she’ll try to eat less and do more cardio, which actually increases cortisol and inflammation, which results in more weight gain. I always tell my menopause patients to minimize cardio and strength train at maximum weight for six to eight reps. Cardio burns muscle, while strength-training builds muscle. WHAT IS PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD STRENGTH TRAINING, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? It’s the six to eight reps at max weight. If you can’t do more than eight reps, then you know you’re at the right weight. The biggest misconception is that we must build endurance in our muscles when we really have to build strength. Women lose 3% to 8 % of their muscle mass every decade after they turn 30. Once they’re postmenopausal, it’s 1.5% annually. So, we have to constantly focus on building muscle. WHEN SHOULD WOMEN START STRENGTH TRAINING? As early as they can. When you’re in your 20s, you should focus on building muscle because once you hit 30, it starts to go downhill. I’m glad that the paradigm for young women has shifted toward being strong rather than being skinny. It’s a nice change that I’m seeing in young people. This year, BackFit, in partnership with Fit Body Boot Camp, will begin offering strength-focused classes specifically for middle-aged men and women who are going through a hormonal transition or who are taking a weight-loss medication. For more information, visit BackFitHealth.com or email dryasmin@backfithealth.com.

Aji Spa at Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass offers a retreat rooted in history, guided by culture, and elevated by a deep commitment to authentic healing. The world-renowned Forbes Travel Guide Five Star destination is more than a place for relaxation; it is a living tribute to the Gila River Indian Community and its longstanding traditions of wellness, artistry, and connection to the natural world. Every element of the spa experience is influenced by the beliefs and stories of the local tribes, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the region’s Native heritage in a meaningful way.

The word “Aji” means sanctified living in the Pima language. This guiding philosophy is reflected throughout the spa’s serene environment with architecture that draws from the landscape with earth-inspired textures, muted desert tones, and a design that evokes balance between the built world and the land that surrounds it. Aji Spa is best known for its exclusive signature array of Indigenous treatments that were created in collaboration with tribal elders. These offerings are exclusive to Aji and cannot be found at any other resort in the world. One of the most celebrated is the Hoishp, a purification experience that blends prickly pear clay

with native herbs. The treatment follows the belief that the earth holds restorative powers that can help remove burdens from both the body and the spirit. Another guest favorite is the Nahtogig. Inspired by the striking Creation Story mosaic that greets every visitor to the spa, this signature experience draws on ingredients that reflect the natural forces central to the tale. Elements such as sunset, light, shifting sand, and flowing water are interpreted through a blend of regional botanicals. Prickly pear, mineral-rich salt, honey, and finely ground blue cornmeal come together to form a gentle exfoliation that softens and replenishes the skin. An
uplifting citrus-infused body moisturizer follows, leaving the body refreshed and hydrated. To complete the ritual, guests receive a printed version of the Creation Story, along with a warm serving of prickly pear tea for a peaceful finish. Beyond traditional Native-inspired treatments, there is also a Connecting with Horses program, during which a wrangler shares Native philosophies and wisdom to guide guests through a personalized experience with a horse. While every experience is customized, it may include touching, grooming, breathing, and moving with the horse to gain confidence and trust. Once gained, horses have a unique

sensitivity to people’s feelings and can lift one’s spirits and promote positivity. Aji Spa also features a full menu of therapeutic massages, body wraps, facials, oxygen therapy, and salon services. Skilled therapists draw from a blend of Nativeinspired methods and modern techniques to create sessions that are both restorative and transformative. During the winter months, there are also a slew of seasonal treatments focused on the therapeutic properties of cannabidiol, or CBD, which is a natural compound from the cannabis plant that does not produce a high. It is used to treat a variety of health issues, such as pain and anxiety. All guests of Aji—no matter the treatments chosen—have access to an impressive collection of amenities to enhance their experience, including indoor and outdoor whirlpools, a steam room, and a sauna. There is also an outdoor pool pavilion where guests can rest between treatments. Inside the spa, men’s and women’s relaxation lounges also provide a quiet
place to enjoy herbal teas and unwind, and just off the spa facilities is the expansive fitness center, which is equipped with both weight training and state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment. For visitors who wish to explore the outdoors, there are also a series of self-guided walks through the preserve and river trails on the property. Hungry for more? Aji Spa also offers a thoughtful dining experience that reflects the region's culinary traditions. Spa cuisine focuses on fresh ingredients and nourishing flavors—think fruit, lean proteins, and salads, as well as alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages—developed to complement anyone’s wellness journey. In a world filled with noise and constant motion, Aji Spa offers something increasingly rare. It provides quiet. It provides meaning. It provides healing inspired by a culture that understands the power of the land and the stories that grow from it. AjiSpa.com

BR EA KTHROUGH A 16-Year-Old’s Experiment Shows Early Promise for Alzheimer’s Most 16-year-olds are focused on learning to drive or keeping up with homework. But Shireen Arora, now a sophomore at BASIS Chandler, spent her time raising more than 3,000 fruit flies in her mother’s office—an unconventional yet groundbreaking effort that could reshape how we think about Alzheimer’s treatment. Arora, a lifelong Chandler resident, began volunteering at Parkland Memory Care four years ago, spending time with residents and learning about their day-to-day life. That work opened her eyes to the emotional and financial burden of Alzheimer’s disease. “A lot of these treatments are really expensive, costing over $20,000 a year,” she says. “I was really inspired to make a novel, affordable treatment.” Her search led her to Ashwagandha, an Ayurvedic plant extract known for reducing stress and inflammation—two underlying factors in Alzheimer’s pathology. “You can get it at a grocery store for about $10 to $20,” she says. “I wanted something that was truly accessible, especially for rural populations that may not have access to these types of resources.” Upon starting this project, Arora was under the age of 16 and only a freshman in high school. With no access to a research lab due to age requirements, Arora emailed more than 60 professors looking for assistance in testing her theory. Most declined, but one—a professor at Midwestern University—offered equipment and guidance. “That was when I was like, ‘Ok, this is actually coming into motion now,” she shares.
38

Arora opted to use fruit flies for her experiment, a standard model for human neurodegenerative disease research, because they share similar nervous and digestive systems with humans. “I had 3,200 flies in my mom’s office, which she was not happy about,” she says, laughing. Some days Arora spent more than six hours working on this experiment, all while keeping up with school. “It got pretty hectic around winter break,” Arora says. But it was all worth it when she began to see results. “Ashwagandha in the fruit flies proved to be very promising in reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s,” she shares. Flies receiving the supplement showed restored movement and cognition at levels comparable to healthy flies. While the results of this experiment apply only to fruit-fly models, Arora believes the findings offer a promising foundation for human research. “I really want to build this up in a clinical setting,” she says. Her work has already earned major recognition. She was named one of Arizona’s Governor’s Future Innovators, won first place at the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair, and qualified for the International Science and Engineering Fair. “I’ve always been passionate about research,” Arora says. “I just want to keep making a difference in the world.” And although she may not have her driver’s license yet, Shireen Arora is already steering Alzheimer’s research in a bold new direction, one fruit fly at a time.
“I’ve always been passionate about research. I just want to keep making a difference in the world.”

PR IOR ITIZING M E N T A L H E A LT H How the Conversation Around Mental Wellness is Changing Lives
CEO Justin Chase
As 2026 begins and many consider exercise routines or healthier eating, mental health deserves equal attention. Mental health has moved from a taboo subject to an essential wellness priority. Since the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline launched nationally in July 2022, crisis calls have climbed steadily each year, and not just from people in acute danger.
People are reaching out earlier, says Justin Chase, CEO of Solari Crisis & Human Services, which answers all 988 calls in Arizona, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "This tells us that individuals see mental health as something to value, monitor and seek support for, in the same way they would care for their physical health."

That shift represents a fundamental change in the approach to wellness. What was once rarely discussed is now recognized as crucial to quality of life, with many seeking support from counselors or therapists as part of routine selfcare. Our psychological well-being affects every area of life, for both present and future selves. Supporting this growing acceptance means caring for ourselves and loved ones, and using available services when needed. Solari has been at the forefront of this evolution for nearly two decades. The organization offers crisis support via telephone, text or chat through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, with the option of dispatching mobile crisis units for in-person support. Additional services include a warm line for peer support, a hotline for domestic violence survivors (SAFEDVS) and 211 Arizona, which connects people to local resources. All services are free and confidential, available around the clock in English and Spanish and, through real-time translation assistance, in more than 100 other languages. "Solari has always been rooted in the belief that mental health is central to overall well-being, and for nearly two decades we've been honored to serve as a trusted partner in crisis care in our state," Chase says. "What has changed in recent years in the environment around us, as public acceptance of mental health support has grown, our role has expanded dramatically.” The numbers tell a compelling story. In 2024, Solari answered over 500,000 crisis calls in Arizona, reflecting a 45 percent increase in volume since 988 became available. Chase and other experts attribute these changes to the pandemic. "When in-person services were disrupted, telehealth became a lifeline, and people who might never have considered therapy before suddenly had access to it from their own homes," Chase says. "That shift made care more approachable and helped normalize the seeking of support. The isolation and stress of the pandemic forced many of us to confront just how critical mental health is, often for the first time in such a visible way."
Chase's own path reflects this change in access systems. He started his career as a social worker but quickly recognized the need for infrastructure that could help more people compassionately and effectively. Moving into leadership allowed him to deliver care on a larger scale, and when the opportunity came to join Solari, Chase says it felt like the perfect intersection of purpose and possibility. "We at Solari have been pleased to see a significant shift in the mental health landscape, both in terms of demand and the kinds of services people are looking for," he says. "Mental health is becoming a larger part of people's lives as awareness grows and stigma declines, and we're seeing that reflected in both national and local trends,” Chase shares. He says surveys show over 60 percent of adults feel comfortable discussing mental health publicly, and more than two-thirds of Americans are aware of 988 services. For those looking to prioritize mental health in the new year, Chase recommends starting small. "Small, consistent steps matter: building routines of self-care that include rest, exercise, healthy eating and time with supportive people can make a big difference," he says. "Reaching out early, whether it's talking to a trusted friend, using a warm line or connecting with a counselor, helps keep challenges from escalating into a crisis." The broader cultural conversation matters too. "Public education, media coverage and individuals and families who share their stories have also helped normalize mental health as part of overall health," Chase says. "No matter how heavy life feels, there is always someone ready to listen, to care and to help light the way forward. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness, but of incredible strength." Chandler International Film Festival Sets the Stage For Its Next Era
LIGHTS, CAMERA, EXPANSION ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHANDLER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL The Chandler International Film Festival (CIFF) is gearing up for its biggest year yet, and organizers say the 10-day celebration continues to stand out as one of Arizona’s most culturally rich cinematic events. What sets CIFF apart is its global scope and filmmaker-centered mission., “The Chandler International Film Festival stands out because it’s not just a film festival—it’s a vibrant 10-day celebration of cinema, global culture, and community,” says Mitesh Patel, CIFF’s president and festival director. Each year, CIFF showcases more than 150 films from around 35 countries, offering everything from independent discoveries to films up for Oscar consideration. But beyond the screenings, the festival has also become known for its hands-on support of creators. “We work tirelessly to bring as many directors, writers, producers, and actors to Chandler as possible,” Patel says, creating a hub for collaboration through workshops, Q&As, after-parties, and a high-energy awards ceremony. The beloved Culture Days further set CIFF apart with “special themed programming that highlights Latin, Indian, Asian, Nordic, African, and other global communities,” he explains.
44
H OT SP OT | L I FE + C ULTURE
This year, CIFF is undergoing its biggest transformation yet. “One of the biggest changes is our expansion into two additional cities—Gilbert and Tempe,” Patel says. The extended footprint opens the festival to new audiences, new partnerships, and a wider range of venues. With its 10th anniversary approaching, attendees can expect a more robust film lineup, expanded cultural programming, and the involvement of even bigger special guests and industry figures. “What excites me most about this year is the scale of growth we’re stepping into,” Patel says, pointing to new venues such as Chandler-Gilbert Community College and expanded networking staples like Coffee Connections in all three cities. With “exceptional programming,” new partners, and major guest talent in the works, he adds, “this year is the most exciting and ambitious CIFF we’ve ever produced.” Chandler International Film Festival will take place Jan. 23-Feb. 1. It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month.
