I’m not sure how November snuck up so fast, but here it is. Seriously, I feel like it was just yesterday that I was looking ahead to 2023! Now, it’s just about time to close out the year. Instead of making November the month that’s just all about Thanksgiving, the holiday, I like to look at November as the month of reflection. Spurred on by the season, I find it’s the perfect time to take a moment to pause during the craziness of daily life—yes, I’m looking at you carpools, cooking meals, juggling appointments, meeting deadlines, and helping with homework—reflect, and make it a point to acknowledge all the things for which I’m grateful. Of course, my family and friends top that list. If this November you, too, take a moment to reflect, I hope you find people and circumstances for which you are thankful. In this issue we incorporated the theme of gratitude and giving back into our pages. Aren’t there so many amazing people in our community?! Read all about how they are making an impact. Local Chandler Restaurant Reopens as Music Bar What happens when two long-term Chandler restaurateur families partner up? A whole new concept and vibe is coming to the community of South Chandler. Sports bar Ginger Monkey underwent renovations to reopen as a music-themed restaurant called On 87. Inspiring Students to Succeed One of the greatest joys in Rachna Nath’s life is when her students succeed. Nath, who teaches biotechnology, environmental science, and honors STEM research at Arizona College Prep High School in Chandler, and is the founder and CEO of DRIPBL, an innovation education platform, does everything she can to motivate her students. “I am always finding out resources, not just to teach content but to use the content in innovative ways that will help trigger the

curiosity of these kids,” Nath says, adding that DRIPBL stands for “Dream, Research, Innovate, Problem/Project Based Learning.” “Whatever they wish to do in their lives, I will support them in whatever possible ways I can,” she says. In addition to providing her students with the opportunity to create and cultivate their own curiosity and individuality, Nath also stresses the importance of perseverance, hard work, and believing in oneself—even when the going gets tough.

OVERCOMING HER OWN OBSTACLES As Nath notes, she knows firsthand what it is like to face, and ultimately overcome, a difficult challenge. When she moved to the United States in 2003 with her husband, it was hard for her to find work. “It was very frustrating because I was applying for like 10 to 15 jobs per day, and nothing came up even though I had a master’s degree,” Nath says, adding that the degree turned out to be a problem because she was told she was overqualified for most of the jobs. “Finally, I ended up applying to be a volunteer at St. Luke’s Medical Hospital in Phoenix near my husband’s office.” Nath spent her time in the emergency room and the surgery waiting room helping people, and she also worked at the front office. “During that time, I was always very cheerful, and one of the ladies who I always said hello to in the morning came up to me and said, ‘Rachna, I’ve seen you work here and volunteer here a lot— do you want a job?’ And that’s how I got my first job as a cafeteria cashier at the hospital where I was volunteering.” In addition to being a cashier, Nath cleaned tables, chairs, and floors. “When the cafeteria was open, it was a learning experience for me, learning things like what is a bagel, what is a brownie, what is a croissant, because in India, we did not have those things. It was a very enriching learning experience,” she says.

even their teacher who is standing right in front of them,” she says. “It actually makes them appreciate us a lot better because they understand we are human and are prone to making mistakes, but they also do respect you a lot because they know that you are opening up to them, and you are forming a bond and a relationship with the students.” Regardless of whether they are in her classroom or working with her through DRIPBL, Nath is devoted to discovering what the students are curious about and encouraging them to believe in themselves. The main difference between the classroom and DRIPBL, Nath notes, is that she can reach students from all over the world from her platform. “At DRIPBL, I provide my services absolutely free to students in certain areas where they are willing to work with me through the platform to learn about innovation and entrepreneurship,” she says.

SHARING PERSONAL CHALLENGES INSPIRES STUDENTS’ RESPECT Nath likes to tell her students about the various challenges she has faced throughout her life, including when it was hard to find work. “I also always talk about my mistakes that I made when I was their age so that they will listen to it and grow into a mindset where everyone is fallible,

and happiness. To date, her students have brought in over $10 million worth of scholarships. Seven projects are patent-pending, and two students authored internationally bestselling books. “They have also gotten over $150,000 in grant money, and this is through student-written grants,” Nath says. No matter what hopes, dreams, and goals her students have, Nath is honored to be a part of their lives and thrilled to provide them with opportunities for success. “When I see the impact that these kids have done on their livelihood, or when they swear by the help that the DRIPBL platform has given them to believe

in themselves, or when they are doing pitch competitions and they are going to present their ideas to stakeholders, or when they are working with the Chandler Incubator to talk about how to build a company, or when they work with patent lawyers and licensing experts to patent their products—everything gives me huge joy,” she says. “This is because in every single aspect of workforce

Chandler residents, the more than two-year wait is over, as SCHEELS, an employee-owned all-sports retailer, is now officially open at Chandler Fashion Center. The new shopping destination offers 220,000 square feet of premium retail adventure for the entire family, with a staff dedicated to providing quality customer service for the ultimate “wow” factor. “SCHEELS is a sporting goods store, but we’re so much more; we’re about everything outdoor recreation,” says Lyndsay Bianchi, assistant store leader at SCHEELS Chandler. “We have everything you need for hobbies, including clothing, shoes, sporting goods, and more. This is our first location in Arizona and the farthest Southwest our company has gone.” The new local SCHEELS is the company’s 32 retail location across 13 states. Headquartered out of Fargo, North Dakota, the company began in 1930 and is employee-owned. The Chandler locale employs hundreds of people, about half of whom came from other SCHEELS locations across the U.S., Bianchi says. “SCHEELS is people-focused—we train and treat our employees well, and that translates to amazing customer service by staff members who truly love what they do,” she says. “We invest in our team members, and when

and much more,” she adds. “But more than that, what matters most, is the customer service and building relationships with Chandler residents and visitors from across the Valley.” Bianchi explains that the Arizona market was under consideration for years before SCHEELS decided to build its first location in the Grand Canyon state. “Arizona made sense for a sporting goods retail experience,” she says. “The weather is gorgeous, and there are so many outdoor activities that can be done year-round. It’s a destination for hikers, bikers, you name it—so it makes sense to have a presence here.” When SCHEELS first announced its plans to open a Chandler location, they were met with open arms by Macerich, the company that owns Chandler Fashion Square, and city leadership. “After studying the Phoenix market for several years, we are thrilled to be part of Chandler Fashion Center,” says SCHEELS CEO Steve M. Scheel.

Bianchi shares that SCHEELS truly hopes to become part of the Chandler community. “At SCHEELS, we believe in doing good in the community, and each location we have gives back to the communities that they’re a part of,” she says. “We have already partnered with a lot of people and community organizations locally and plan to continue to do so. Packages from Home PackagesFromHome.org Packages From Home was founded as a response to the events of 9/11. The day after witnessing the fall of the Twin Towers in New York City, Christian Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Army infantry. During his deployment to Iraq in 2004, Christian’s mother, Kathleen Lewis, regularly sent him care packages. According to Chrisitan, the packages not only contained needed and familiar items, they also reminded him of the support and appreciation from those back home. After learning that Christian was the only one in his squad who received them, Lewis and her friends “adopted” the others and sent care packages to all of them. This was the inception of Packages From Home. The organization’s mission is to serve active duty U.S. military members stationed or deployed overseas, including military working dogs and K9 teams. They also assist homeless, transitioning, and at-risk veterans by providing them with requested food, hygiene, and entertainment items. Supporting Packages From Home through monetary donations is always appreciated, as is donating items. Interested groups can also host Packing Party events.

Jennifer Armer founded Armer Foundation For Kids at the beginning of 2019 with one key mission in mind: to support children with extreme medical needs. Armer, who co-owns Armer Air along with her husband, Matt, noticed that as their Ahwatukee HVAC business grew and she got to know more people in the local community, she met a number of families with children facing extreme medical conditions and struggling to find ways to pay their medical bills. To help these families, she volunteered to organize yard sales, blood drives, and other fundraising efforts. Around the same time, Matt suggested that she start her own nonprofit organization. “We believe a family’s main focus should be on the welfare and health of their child, not on medical bills or other financial burdens,” Armer says. To support Armer Foundation For Kids, attend one of the organization’s events or a DIY workshop; details are on the website. There is also a Ways to Help page on the organization’s website, which lists options such as taking part in a blood donation, sponsoring an event, donating to the Arizona tax credit, or linking the nonprofit to a Fry’s account. The woman joined a Facebook group for Chandler residents and invited others to donate items. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that a number of arriving refugee families received needed assistance, and a warehouse was used to store surplus items. This experience led to the creation of Gathering Humanity, a volunteer-run nonprofit organization. Since its inception, thousands of people from across the Valley have helped to welcome thousands of refugees. Gathering Humanity helps to provide household goods for four local resettlement agencies. While the primary focus remains refugees, Gathering Humanity also collects and distributes basic household goods for other vulnerable populations, including those timing out of foster care, families coming out of homelessness, and those impacted by violence and trafficking. Those who would like to help Gathering Humanity can volunteer at one of its two locations, donate items, or participate in its biannual baby shower. They can also “adopt” a refugee family or donate filled stockings for the Gathering Humanity Christmas program. The organization is also qualified for Arizona’s state tax credit program.

Kid in the Corner KidInTheCorner.org

Francine Sumner founded the nonprofit organization Kid in the Corner three months after her youngest son, Zach, took his life at the age of 16. “Our mission is to shatter the stigma that surrounds mental illness and to support the ‘Kid in the Corner,’ whoever that may be,” Sumner says. The nonprofit helps to educate and spread awareness about mental illness; teach kids the importance of reaching out to others who are struggling; promote “contagious kindness,” which encourages them to be kind to each other and themselves; and connect the community to needed resources. Kid in the Corner’s educational program is called Penny Pledge. Designed for students in grades 4 through 12, it strives to eliminate the stigma around mental health. Kids wear pennies around their necks, on keychains, or on backpacks as a physical reminder to reach out to others and be kind. So far, more than 30,000 kids have taken the penny pledge, Sumner says. Kid in the Corner welcomes donations through its website, and those interested can advocate to have Kid in the Corner programming added to their child’s school.

CeCe’s Hope Center CeCesCenter.org Founded in 2017, CeCe’s Hope Center’s mission is to improve the lives and futures of women ages 18 to 24 who are at risk for, or victims of, sexual trauma and human trafficking. The organization achieves this by bridging the gap in critical services and support. Lea Benson, former CEO of StreetLightUSA, and former Vice-Mayor Rene Lopez of Chandler, were inspired to start the nonprofit organization after observing that survivors who had aged out of the foster care system often struggled to support themselves and stay on a positive path. CeCe’s Hope Center provides transitional housing, case management, and wraparound

support services. It serves a particularly vulnerable population that intersects girls who have aged out of foster care, homelessness, and sharing the commonality of being victims of a heinous crime. To help CeCe’s Hope Center, people can donate needed items. The organization posts a regularly updated Wish List on its website. People may also attend the annual Night of Light event. CeCe’s Hope Center is a qualified tax credit organization, which means contributions from Arizona tax payers qualify for a dollar-for-dollar tax credit.

St. Vincent de Paul SVdPAZ.org

St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) feeds, clothes, houses, and heals the vulnerable across the Valley, including the Chandler community. Volunteers have been serving the Chandler area since 1987, after forming a local presence out of St. Mary’s Parish. The nonprofit organization operates a network of more than 80 neighborhood food pantries, five charity dining rooms, transitional shelters, a resource center for the homeless, bill assistance and homelessness prevention programming, as well as a charity clinic with medical, dental and wellness care for the uninsured. In 2023, St. Vincent de Paul increased its daily meal production from 4,500 meals to 7,000 meals. As SVdP Associate Chief Operations Officer Danielle McMahon notes, having volunteers across all of the food assistance areas is now especially critical. “We hope the community will consider serving in our charity dining rooms, sorting donations in our central food bank, and prepping meals alongside our kitchen staff,” Saldivar says. “We even have a new opportunity to directly help support the increase in shelter meals. Volunteers can serve in our ‘shelter plating’ opportunity, helping us dish up meals in to-go containers to truck out to the different shelters in our community.”

For local resident Karen Quick, volunteering is something she has been doing for most of her career. “After graduating from Arizona State University, I went to work for Arthur Andersen as an auditor and was fortunate enough to become a corporate sponsor of Junior Achievement companies, moving into the mentor role.” Junior Achievement of Arizona (JA) is a nonprofit organization that helps Arizona students to find success in work and life by giving them the knowledge and skills they need to manage their money, plan for their future, and make smart choices. Quick says her involvement with JA grew over time, “growing beyond volunteering in the classroom to supporting the development of new programs and educational assets, participating in fundraising activities, joining the board of directors in 2014, and becoming an all-around ambassador for the organization. After I retired from my corporate role, I now get to spend much of my retirement time volunteering with a focus on career mentorship for middle and high school students and young adults.” That time is clearly well spent, as Quick was recently awarded Junior Achievement’s Gold Leadership Award. The award honors volunteer excellence and recognizes just a few select people from over 150,000 volunteers across the United States. “Being selected as one of 23 recipients out of over 150,000 volunteers for the 2023 Junior

Achievement Gold Leadership Award is the pinnacle recognition for the time and energy I have put forth over my life helping Arizona students learn the skills and figure out their career pathways to be successful.” For Quick, this award reinforces the importance of the role she serves as a community volunteer. “Knowing that an organization values their volunteers enough to provide this type of recognition completes my sense of worth that not only am I helping youth along their life journey, but the organization I am partnering with recognizes the importance of my role,” she says. The award isn’t the only rewarding part of being involved with Junior Achievement for Quick. “My heightened awareness of the educational and social gaps for Arizona students has driven my passion to help wherever I can to narrow the gaps and help future generations be successful in work and life,” she adds. “Being able to help today’s students identify their pathways to success, both personally and professionally, brings me personal satisfaction.” She also shares that many people from the organization have become friends, and through her networking, she has learned things she didn’t know before about local organizations and companies. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top of a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character.
