I’m writing this as I’m on an airplane headed to Europe on our biggest family trip yet. It’s early July, and I know that in a few short weeks—when this magazine hits your mailbox—summer will be over (not in temperature or actual calendar date, but in the kids-are-back-in-school way). How is it August already? I don’t know about you, but to me, the summers tend to feel like they go faster and faster. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. In our family, we all quickly miss the lazy days of less responsibility; the evenings spent in the pool; and the extra family time that is spent hanging out at home, rather than carpooling to activities. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. First, we showcase several teens who are impacting the world. Wow. The things they are accomplishing are truly amazing. Plus, kids’ books? Check. We feature local author Ebonié P. Fields, who recognized a lack of diversity in books and so decided to write her own. We also showcase several farm animal sanctuaries in the area. From cows to Clydesdales, pigs to chickens, and more, there are people helping. And of course, Chandler BMX, which is featured on our cover. If you haven’t heard about Chandler BMX, get ready for an action-packed adventure. Everyone is welcome there, and the history of the locale is fascinating. BMX is now even an Olympic-sanctioned competition! I hope you enjoy the issue and have a wonderful month!

MAKING AN IMPACT

Rachna Nath Named One of TIME’s Innovative Teachers of 2022 When Rachna Nath was checking emails at work one day in 2018, she found one that described how high school students could apply for grants if they came up with an innovative idea. Intrigued by the message, Nath, who teaches science at Arizona College Prep High School, began working with students after school to invent solutions to real-world problems. Students learned to brainstorm solutions, research existing patents, and were taught how to apply for grants to build prototypes of their new products. What started as an after-school program for the students will become a year-long class this fall for about 30 students who are working on a variety of projects and applying for multiple patents. Nath’s work caught the attention of the editors at TIME, who named her to the first-ever TIME Innovative Teachers project, which profiles 10 teachers who are “changing the landscape of education in America through innovation.” As Nath notes, she never intended for the grant writing opportunity to become a program. “I wanted my students to understand what opportunities were available to them, and I wanted them to have something that they could put onto their resume that would help them get into a good school,” she says, adding that some of her students now own their own companies. Rath learned that she was named one of TIME’s Innovative Teachers in the same way she found out about the grant writing opportunity—through an unexpected email. “It was a big surprise, and I was not expecting it at all until I got the email,” she says. “It feels good that my work with my students is being noticed, and I’m just blown away and am very, very grateful.”

TEACHING MORE THAN SPORTSMANSHIP Through the use of programs such as BMX STEM Program, Read to Ride, and Track Modeling, finding ways to incorporate the sport into educational initiatives is a priority at Chandler BMX. MEET THE CEO AND CHIEF INNOVATOR, BA ANDERSON Behind the scenes of the Chandlerfounded USA BMX is a dedicated team of enthusiasts, led by 30-year Chandler resident BA Anderson. Driving the vision and direction of USA BMX, Anderson has overseen the implementation of BMX Racing into the Olympics, including organizing and hosting multiple Olympic trials, and much more. His passion for the sport translates to over 50,000 active BMX racers at more than 320 locations across North America, hosting more than 11,000 BMX races. BMX is in Anderson’s DNA. Writing has always been a part of Eboniè P. Fields’ life. From a young age, Fields was writing down her thoughts and creating short stories. She has quite literally written the path for her own life. Fields was born in Delaware and moved to Houston, Texas with her family as a child. She attended Baylor University and received a degree in journalism before going on to earn a masters in business administration from Texas Women’s University. She worked for a news station out of college and then decided to move to the marketing side of the business. “I just couldn’t get excited over bad news any longer,” she says. Fields and her husband have two children. It was a fortuitous visit to Barnes & Noble with her family that inspired her to write children’s books. “I was looking in the children’s section and I noticed there was a lack of diversity and no books with people of color,” she says. “That night I talked to my husband about that and he suggested that I write my own.” That trip to the bookstore ignited Fields—and her award-winning Hummingbird series was born. In 2013, Zenie and the Magical Hummingbirds was published, and in December 2020 she released Zoey and the Magical Hummingbirds. Fields explains that the name of her first title character, Zenie, is combination of her husband’s middle name— Zenel—and her first name. The name Zoey just came to her as she was writing.

As for the hummingbirds, Fields says there is a special significance there, too. Fields has Jamaican roots and the national bird of Jamaica is the hummingbird. But it goes even further than that. “When I was young, about 10 years old, I found a sick hummingbird and nursed it back to life,” she shares. “I don’t know ... ever since then I have felt a connection with hummingbirds.” In December of 2021, both books received an Honorable Mention from the Royal Dragon Fly Book Awards. Zoey and the Magical Hummingbirds also received a Five-Star Review from Readers’ Favorite, and has been recognized as a Silver Award Recipient by the Mom’s Choice Awards. In September of 2020, Fields founded Ebby’s Book House, a for-profit organization providing coaching and consulting to aspiring writers of all ages. “I want to help people understand the importance of voice and sentence fluency and become great writers,” she says. “When you read someone’s voice it hits harder, and I want to help with that.” Fields says nobody else in the family writes, but it has been a part of her as long as she can remember. “I have always had a creative spirit and enjoyed putting my thoughts and creativity on paper,” she says. Rescued Farm Animals Find Safety, Security, and Lots of TLC in the East Valley Aimee's Farm Animal Sanctuary

When you hear the term “animal rescue,” you might immediately envision an organization that cares for dogs and cats. While there are plenty of groups devoted to helping these types of pets, there are also organizations that are devoted to rescuing farm animals. Here, a few of the East Valley sanctuaries that provide peaceful and healing homes for farm animals. Rowell Ranch Rowell Ranch in Chandler is a 501c3 farm sanctuary, sustainability educator, and event venue, run by members of the Rowell family. The sanctuary, which goes by R. Ranch for short, is home to a variety of rescued animals who all came to live there through various ways—including young bovines Oogi and Mooshi, and goats Caramel Macchiato and Vanilla Bean Frappuccino. “We care for them to help them live their full lives to their fullest,” says Cheyenne Rowell, chief executive mom of R. Ranch and household operations. “We also like to educate people about each species here, so they get to meet them and learn about how they live and how our impact as humans have changed it.” To learn more about the animals who call R. RowellRanch.org Aimee’s Farm Animal Sanctuary The mission of Aimee’s Farm Animal Sanctuary in Queen Creek is to “Rescue, rehabilitate, re-home, and spread awareness of farm animals in need while creating a healing environment for differently abled humans.” The sanctuary’s founder, Aimee Takaha, who is a trauma survivor with PTSD, noticed that as she began

to rescue animals many years ago her episodes of PTSD become less frequent. The sanctuary focuses on the most vulnerable of animals, including the ones with handicaps that no other rescue group could help. “We have many animals that were born different, paralyzed, deformed from abuse or injury, [or] broken mentally and physically that we have healed back to help, and these very animals are helping people,” Takaha says, adding that they also have horses, pigs, and cows saved from slaughter, animals with special needs, and seniors. “We are one of the largest sanctuaries in Arizona with the biggest variety of animals, including alpacas, ducks, goats, sheep, pigs, bunnies, horses, cows, turkeys, chickens, and more,” she says. Aimee’s Farm Animal Sanctuary also offers Cow Hugging Sessions, and the sessions are so popular they are often booked out a month or two in advance. AimeesFarmAnimalSanctuary.org USA Clydesdale Preservation Foundation This animal sanctuary in Gilbert is currently home to six Clydesdale horses. While the sanctuary is not open to the public, it does host several special events on select dates throughout the year that allow people to interact with the animals one-on-one. Seasonal events include the opportunity to bathe a Clydesdale during the summer; there are also recurring events like “Morning Coffee with the Clydesdales,” which is held on the third Saturday of the month. “We enjoy presenting the Clydesdales through the community, social media, educational, and barn events. With the support that we receive locally and nationally, we will continue our efforts to help preserve the Clydesdale breed for future generations,” it notes on the foundation’s website. RECOGNIZING CHANDLER'S FUTURE LEADERS There are some truly amazing teens in Chandler, and Mayor Kevin Hartke recently launched the Chandler Changemakers initiative to recognize them. “Chandler is a Community of Innovation, well known for its talented workforce, high-tech industries, and responsible approach to growth,” he says. “The Chandler Changemakers program is important because it showcases our remarkable leaders, inspiring others to seek their own innovative paths.” Here, meet four of them.

Prisha Shroff, a sophomore at Hamilton High School, was nominated for her design of a wildfire prevention system. Originally conceived as a science fair project, Shroff’s innovative design predicts areas that are vulnerable to wildfires using satellite and meteorological data and artificial intelligence. She has won many awards, including the Broadcom MASTERS—which is the nation’s premier Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) middle school competition. Shroff is inspired by Elon Musk and Gandhi. She’s very involved in school as a member of the student council, DECA, math club, coding club, choir, and swim team, to name just a few. She also plays piano, enjoys classical singing, and is a Kathakar, Indian classical dancer. She has won numerous awards, accolades, and honors for her academic achievements, and strives to help empower her fellow youth through STEM. Shroff is currently working with Arizona State University to develop a drone deployment system.

Anshul Verma, a recent graduate of Hamilton High School, founded the Chandler chapter of Phones for Charity, a charitable initiative in which he held drives to collect used and old cell phones which he then repaired and sold, donating all profits to local charities. He has helped to raise about $5,000 through his efforts. Verma played tennis in high school, serving as captain his senior year. He also volunteered at the Chandler Public Libraries throughout high school and was president

of the Teen Advisory Council. As a junior, he participated in the International Science and Engineering Fair where he won the Oracle Academy Award for his submission. “I am inspired by my parents as they have always been very kind and hard-working and they always put others ahead of themselves” he says. “I am also inspired by individuals who are able to have positive impacts in society and who can transcend barriers to achieve their goals, such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Malala Yousafzai.” CONTINUED >

Sam Bregman, 18

Sam Bregman just completed his senior year at Hamilton High School and will start his freshman year at Arizona State University (ASU) this fall. He created the Bregman Chapter of Shoes That Fit, a Chandler-based chapter of Shoes That Fit, a nationwide 501c3 nonprofit organization. As founder and president of the Chandler chapter, he built a team of six people to tackle one of the most visible signs of poverty. Through their efforts, Bregman and his team have raised over $28,000. The funds were used to provide every student at Galveston and San Marcos Elementary Schools with brand new, perfectly fitting, name brand shoes, and five new pairs of Bombas socks. In total, they have distributed 882 shoes and 4,360 pairs of socks. “Being recognized as a Chandler Changemaker is so much more than a title,” Bregman says. “It’s proof that kindness, selflessness, and determination among teenagers is not only being recognized but also supported in our community.” Bregman’s current projects include building two startups. One is focused on creating sports drinks that provide complete and healthy hydration for high-performance athletes. The second is focused on empowering young men to choose a life that aligns with the highest version of themselves. Bregman enjoys working out and competes in Spartan races. At ASU he plans to major in business data analytics. He finds inspiration in seeing others leading by example. He admires the Dalai Lama, Steve Jobs, Wim Hof, Gary Vaynerchuk, Tim Grover, and Tony Robbins.

“The best things in life exist outside your comfort zone, and if you never quit, success is inevitable,” he says. 34

Ella Wang,

Ella Wang created a rapid and automated system to screen for blood-related diseases. She designed a 3D-printed attachment that can be clipped onto a mobile phone to convert it into a microscope with 400x magnification for only $8. With the camera, images of blood cells are captured that can then be combined with her web application that tells which cells may be diseased and whether you should see a doctor. Wang hopes that this project will help the regions where blood tests aren’t as accessible. As a cancer survivor, she has been motivated to further support the medical field. “At 3 years old, I was diagnosed with stage IV rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer,” she said. “As a survivor, I owe my life to advancements in biomedical research and technology.” Wang is a research intern at Arizona State University’s Geometric Media Lab, where she investigated orthogonal-sphere constraints to improve the performance and interpretability of deep learning models for COVID-19 detection from chest X-ray images. “To me, being named a Chandler Changemaker means being a part of an energetic, innovative community that is motivated to improve the lives of those in Chandler, Arizona, and beyond,” she says. “It represents a commitment to leadership, service, and generating positive change in our schools and communities— something I hope to continue carrying forward with my research, entrepreneurship, and service efforts.” Wang will be a freshman at MIT this fall.

When Karin Boyle’s father was recovering from a serious health condition, his physicians suggested that he take part in activities that he enjoyed when he was healthy. Boyle, who grew up on a dairy farm in Chandler, figured that her dad would respond well to the animals he spent a great deal of time with over the years. “I came up with the idea of cow therapy,” Boyle says, adding that while she knew that a regular-size cow probably would be challenging to travel with, a new breed called the micro mini white park heifer would be the perfect size. In late August 2021, Dolly Star came to live with Boyle in Chandler. She began bringing the adorable young heifer to visit her dad, and was delighted to see the positive effect Dolly Star had on her father. “Dolly Star worked really well, and my dad is now back home. I figured I might as well keep everything going, so I founded the Dolly Star Foundation and we started visiting memory care facilities in October,” Boyle says, adding that she named Dolly Star in part after Dolly Parton. “Her middle name, Star, is because I just knew that she would be super successful at what she was doing and would be a star,” she explains.

Boyle says that Dolly Star not only sparks joy in everyone she meets, but she also helps older people with memory issues recall experiences having to do with agriculture. “Most people who are between 60 and 100 years old didn’t grow up with technology, but they do have core memories of some kind that bring them back to agriculture, whether that is growing up on a farm or getting fresh milk delivered to their homes,” she says. “When Dolly Star is with them, the stories will come out like you wouldn’t believe.” When Dolly Star is not providing cow therapy to people, she spends her time living in Boyle’s backyard or hanging out with her dad at his home. Boyle’s five-year plan involves finding a barn where Dolly Star can live, and have people come to her for bovine therapy sessions. For now, Boyle will continue taking her to memory care facilities, adult living communities, and other locations. “When I walk in with a mini cow, everyone is in awe and just giggles and laughs. Dolly Star will lay on the ground and chew her cud and relax, which makes everyone around her relax,” Boyle says. DollyStarFoundation.com
