Joyce Selk | joyce.selk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Raise your hands—how many of you get the urge to spring clean? I do! First up, my closet. But this year, when I add new clothes to my (hopefully emptier) closet, I’m going to choose from some of the brands we feature in the fashion spread in this issue. Most of them are not only local, but they are all eco-friendly. Good for me and, most importantly, good for the Earth. This issue we also spend exploring a bit. We profile the new Bottle & Bean (have you been there yet? It’s great!), and showcase the recently completed $180 million expansion of Gila River Resorts' Wild Horse Pass, which includes a new resort tower, a rooftop restaurant, and more. Check out all the updates in our story. We also have a story on a food truck—Wok This Way—that has a unique story. It’s not only sustainable and offers healthy food, but was created to offer empowerment through employment. Read about the owner’s future plan for the business and why she was named one of the 48 Most Intriguing Women of Arizona for 2022. I hope you enjoy the issue and have a wonderful month. See you in May! Yours,

WHO YOU WORK WITH MATTERS Reviews on Google, Yelp, Zillow, Realtor.com, Top Rated Local

“Cathy was a terrific agent from beginning to end. Her comps were accurate and her marketing was the best we have seen in our experience selling 7 previous homes. She handled all the negotiations very well and helped us navigate several anxious turns in the process. We would use her to sell or buy a house again without hesitation. Great to work with!”

SIP & EAT BARISTAS, SOMMELIERS, AND YOU—BOTTLE & BEAN COFFEE HOUSE & WINE SHOP

Last month one of Chandler’s newest hot spots opened its doors with a concept that combines two of mankind’s biggest loves— coffee and wine. Bottle & Bean Coffee House & Wine Shop is a unique coffee house/wine shop hybrid now open in the space formally occupied by Press Coffee in Downtown Ocotillo. It also expanded into a vacant office next door. Bottle & Bean is the sixth dining concept opened in partnership by real estate developer Spike Lawrence of Spike Lawrence Ventures, and longtime restauranteur Tom Kaufman. The partners met in 2009 and are the duo behind popular spots The Living Room, Rock Lobster, Sea & Smoke, and CHoP Chandler.

Lawrence says that Kaufman—who has been a certified sommelier since the 1980s— has had a “lifelong dream to open a wine retail shop,” and calls Bottle & Bean, which has an upscale, yet approachable vibe, “the ultimate gathering place for our community.” “We are connecting wine and coffee in a new and unique way,” he says. “There are obvious similarities in wine and coffee— one of the most obvious is the aromas and flavors. Wine and coffee both have unique bouquets of aromas specific to their terroir, roasting process, and variety. We are here to help you experience both exotic lanes in the coffee and wine worlds.” “We will all reap the benefits of Tom’s purchasing power, and a diverse selection of wines will be available to grab on-the-go at a very reasonable price,” Lawrence says. “We have the ability to be very competitive due to our high wine purchasing power that we currently have in the restaurant space.” Wines from around the world are showcased, including bottle-to-go offerings, and there are daily private wine tastings where, for a small fee, guests can sample and savor several varietals. The fee is waived if three or more bottles are purchased. For food, Bottle & Bean serves scratchmade breakfast and lunch menus created by Corporate Chef Chris George. For breakfast, guests can choose from a variety of sandwiches, burritos, avocado toasts, and castiron frittatas. A sampling includes the Quinoa Breakfast Burrito with fire-roasted corn, black beans, tomatoes, and egg; the Beefsteak Tomato Toast topped with avocado smash, buffalo mozzarella, and fried egg; and the Southwest Chicken Sausage Frittata with new potatoes, peppers, house bacon, and cheddar cheese.

The lunch menu features a selection of salads, bowls, and sandwiches, such as the Roasted Asian Chicken tossed with Napa cabbage, bean sprouts, crispy wontons, and sesame shoyu dressing; the Veggie Bowl, which is filled with heirloom carrots, quinoa, goat cheese, spinach, and marinated cherry tomatoes; and the Steak Sandwich, which is layered with peppercorn seared flank steak, arugula, caramelized onions, and garlic aioli. The evening hours can extend to accommodate private parties of up to 50, with both prix fixe menus and custom menus available. Bottle & Bean’s space includes an outdoor seating area with a lavish green lawn that has room for large groups and families, and where guests can enjoy themed, pop-up picnics created specially by the locale. There’s also a private dining room that seats up to 40 and has an 85-inch television screen for presentations, making it ideal for both business and celebratory events. And, a retail area offers coffee and wine varietals from across the globe, as well as glassware, greeting cards, and gifts. “We believe in learning, tasting, and enjoying not only with wine, coffee, and food, but also in life,” says Lawrence. “We enjoy bringing concepts that our community needs and desires.” Bottle-Bean.com

CHANDLER RESORT TRANSITIONS INTO A LEISURE TRAVEL DESTINATION

ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS

Expansion

This past January, Gila River Resorts unveiled its $180 million Wild Horse Pass expansion. The project had officially broken ground in February 2019, and updates include the addition of a new resort tower and the rooftop restaurant Prime, a Shula’s Steak House, plus a newly renovated lobby, increased meeting/ event space, and a new event lawn. This is the property’s first expansion project since opening in October 2009. “We are truly excited to introduce our expansion. Throughout the past several years, we have been creating a destination packed with thrilling entertainment and new ways to relax,” says Kenneth Manuel, CEO. CONTINUED >

The expansion marks Gila River’s transition into the “resorts” category. “We recognized the large demand for leisure travel as there are very few full-service resorts in the Chandler area, so we wanted to rebrand as a destination where guests can have everything they need and want in one stay,” says Denise Pfaff, corporate director of resort operations. The new Sunrise tower is 11 stories and connects to the existing Sunset tower. It features 205 new guest rooms and suites, for a total of 446 rooms at the resort. Many of the rooms boast sweeping desert and mountain views. “We’re close to the airport, yet guests will still have a secluded feel surrounded by the Estrella Mountains, Whirlwind Golf Course, and the beautiful sunsets,” says Pfaff. The newly renovated lobby entrance at Wild Horse Pass showcases a stunning chandelier atop the resort’s iconic rearing horse sculpture, and a diverse collection of art by Gila River Indian Community artists is prominently featured throughout the lobby. The resort has also enhanced the pool experience by adding two new pools—the Oasis Pool, with 17 poolside cabanas and a bar and grill, and the Serenity Adult Pool, which caters to the 21-and-older crowd. In addition, the resort increased its event space for a total of 30,000 square feet of indoor meeting space, and 7,000 square feet of outdoor meeting space with an event lawn. The crowning jewel of the new expansion at Wild Horse Pass is the rooftop restaurant Prime, A Shula’s Steak House, which is accessed by a stunning glass elevator and features a menu crafted by celebrity chef Demetrio Zavala. “This is fine dining experience in the East Valley that is amazing with a view,” Pfaff says. Prime is open for dinner service, and on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the restaurant transforms into 11ven, a nightlife lounge with craft cocktails, entertainment, and a live DJ. The venue offers spectacular views from the 11th-floor balcony for a perfect happy hour sunset. WildHorsePass.com

FOOD TRUCK OFFERS EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EMPLOYMENT Kris Mill of Chandler, the owner of the food truck Wok This Way, does much more than sling delicious Asian-inspired fare. She started the business to give her best friend’s son, Jake Lipovitch, who has Down Syndrome, “something he calls his own,” Mill says. Over the next couple of years, Mill, who was recently named one of the 48 Most Intriguing Women of Arizona for 2022 by 48 Arizona Women, an Arizona Centennial Legacy initiative, plans to create a notfor-profit corporation and develop a fleet of healthy, sustainable vegetarian and vegan food trucks nationwide to employ people like Jake. Mill, who’s also a licensed counselor, was present when Jake was born and later got a call from his mother, Michele Lipovitch. “She said, ‘Oh my gosh, Jake has Down Syndrome,” Mill recalls. “I said, ‘We’ll get through this.’ I already had a lot of experience with Special Olympics and special needs, long before Jake was born.” Mill and Jake, who will be 16 in April, are so close she calls him her “nephew.”

They began cooking together when he was a toddler, and the idea of a food truck dawned on her later. “I wanted to build a truck that would empower people with special needs,” she states. The philosophy for Wok This Way is based on what’s good for people and the planet, Mill explains. All items except one (“beef” lo mein) are gluten-free because Jake and many of his peers have issues tolerating it, and nuts and seeds are avoided because of allergies. Dishes are low-sodium, meat-free, and under 500 calories. Wok This Way is also a certified “green business” by the Green Restaurant Association, City of Phoenix, and Local First Arizona. Biodegradable utensils are made from corn, and appliances are Energy Star rated. “I didn’t want a greasy food truck,” Mill says. “We don’t have a fryer, microwave, or can opener.” You can visit Wok This Way in downtown Phoenix on First Fridays on Roosevelt Row; also check for events by clicking “Find Us Now” at WokThisWay.today.

JESS H A RTER: THE MIND B E H I N D M OU T H BY S OU T H W E S T

HOW ONE MAN TAPPED INTO A MARKET FAMISHED FOR NEWS ABOUT CHANDLER/EAST VALLEY EATING AND DRINKING

ARTICLE GERI KOEPPEL PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA L. RHOADES

We all have that friend we go to for tips on the latest and greatest places for dining and drinking. Jess Harter has become “that guy” for about 1.3 million users of his website, Mouth by Southwest. Centered mainly on East Valley restaurant and bar news, MXSW is where to look for openings, closings, special events, and more. Harter — who lives on the Chandler/Gilbert border — started the site in 2010 after being laid off from the East Valley Tribune, where he’d worked since 1987. After the Tribune folded, Harter said restaurant owners and managers within a week or two started calling him to ask where they could send information, so he set up a WordPress blog. “It was just something I wanted to do to help out a couple restaurants,” he explains. Most media outlets tended to focus coverage on Scottsdale and Phoenix, and he noticed a dearth of information about other areas. MXSW grew up with, and likely boosted the success of, the food and beverage scene in Chandler and the East Valley. “The Chandler restaurant scene when I started in 2010 is very different than today,” Harter recalls. “The two explosive areas of growth are downtown and — the last few years — San Tan Village. It’s been too much, too fast for people to keep track of.”

BUILDING A BUSINESS In the beginning, Harter saw MXSW as a hobby. “If I got 50 or 100 people to read a post, I thought that was pretty good,” he recalls. “In a couple of years, a few thousand were reading a post. It grew by leaps and bounds. Real popular posts, I’d get 50,000, 60,000, 70,000 hits.” He didn’t do any marketing other than having a social media presence. Harter posts an average of three to four times a day, Monday through Friday, and hones in on the basic facts such as opening dates and hours. In fact, he doesn’t do reviews at all, which surprises people. “When I started MXSW, Yelp reviews, Google reviews and social media reviews already were everywhere,” he muses. “I didn’t see the value in adding one more opinion to the cacophony. I’ve always intended MXSW to be a news site, not a platform for one person’s opinions.” Although he used to do in-depth on-site coverage of food festivals and other long posts, he tends to keep the articles brief these days. He discovered through site analytics that covering what’s coming, what’s opening, what’s just opened and what’s closed gets the most traffic. MXSW is now Harter’s full-time job, after growing organically. By late 2011, restaurant owners began CONTINUED >

asking Harter if they could advertise, but as of 2012, he still only had six ads. “It wasn’t paying my bills or anything,” he notes. But by 2013, it became clear it could become a viable business. “It became the go-to place, so if restaurants wanted to advertise locally, it came to mind,” he says. “I don’t cold call restaurants. They call me.” Harter also cites the “explosive growth” of restaurants and bars in the area and other eastern cities as a factor in the success of MXSW. “The Joe Johnston influence was huge: the barbecue place, Joe’s Farm Grill, Agritopia, which will be a big cluster of stories I’m writing the next year or two,” he notes. “It was just a dream of Joe’s back in 2010, and now, it’s happening.” Throughout it all, Harter has been a stalwart supporter of the industry and gives restaurants an affordable way to reach his audience. He charges $35 a month for a small ad; $75 for a large one.

FROM FOOTBALL TO FOOD Raised in Fargo, North Dakota, Harter always planned to move from the bitter cold and snow of North Dakota to a warm, sunny climate where he could wear shorts in the winter. His dad, a high school baseball coach, was an unofficial scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his family vacationed each winter in either Arizona or Florida to see spring training games. In his senior year at the University of North Dakota, Harter started working at his hometown newspaper in Fargo, answering calls and compiling sports scores. Despite never having taken a journalism class — he double-majored in philosophy and English and minored in religious studies — he worked in newspapers until his layoff, including a stint in Colorado before taking the job at the East Valley Tribune. While it’s not a surprise that Harter — a huge football fan who loves the Arizona Cardinals and University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks — spent the bulk of his career on the sports desk, he ended his career running the weekly Get Out entertainment supplement at the Tribune. He credits his tenure there to teaching him the business acumen needed to build MXSW. “Almost all journalists fail

when starting their own thing,” he says, because they’re not skilled in marketing or advertising or have the technical expertise to run a website. In addition to food, drink and football, Harter is nuts about pups. He has two pit bull rescues, Emma and Ella, which he adopted last year from Gilbert-based Love Connection Dog Rescue. He’d always had two or three dogs his entire life, mainly German short-hair retrievers or Labrador retrievers for hunting. In 2010, though, he was at the shelter looking for a similar breed and ended up adopting a brindle-striped pit bull named Tigger, whose continually wagging tail and hopeful look stole his heart. He and Harter’s other dog, Gunner, went with him everywhere until they passed away in 2019 and 2020, respectively. “They went through more under-construction restaurants in the East Valley than anyone has ever seen,” he laughs. “The dogs would run through halfbuilt kitchens. They loved going to those places.” Here are four local dog-friendly bars that Harter recommends.

GINGER MONKEY Four-legged guests have their own menu featuring items including burger, chicken, and salmon. Show-off your favorite pup photo online with the hashtag #elwayslounge.

BLD’S Pups will have a hard choice to make with a menu that includes k9 bowls with options offering apples, peanut butter, ice cream, burger, and chicken. Or maybe they will choose something on the lighter side, like the k9 pupsicle.

O.H.S.O. BREWERY & DISTILLERY Your dog can run and play with other dogs on a grassy area outside, and the staff put out water dishes and make dog biscuits.

UNCLE BEAR’S GRILL & TAP AZ Named after the owner’s dog, Bear, this is a canine lover’s dream, where pictures of customers’ pups are posted on the walls and tap handles are shaped like fire hydrants.
