LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Big Brown Wall

March 2022 PUBLISHER

Joyce Selk | joyce.selk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Let me tell you a story about the big brown wall in my family room. You see it almost immediately when you walk into my house. It’s giant. And it’s ugly. In fact, the first thing my husband and I said when we were looking at this house before we bought it was—and I quote—“Wow, that’s ugly! Repainting that will be our first project right after we move in!” (Ahem, apologies to the previous owners if you’re reading this!) Fast-forward nine years. While we’ve done some renovations on our home, that ugly wall is still there, waiting to see what we’d do to the rest of the surrounding room so that the paint we’d pick would complement it. Life happens. The kids were young and needed a lot of attention. Then they were older and needed a lot of rides. Work was busy. The dog needed playtime. The hours, days, and years flew by. But (ugly wall aside) that is what made our house a home. The hustle and bustle, the love, and the dinners together (mostly) every night. Speaking of home, welcome to our Home Issue! We've got the latest in trends in bathrooms, share the benefits of staging a home for sale, tell the story of a local high school graduate whose athletic dreams came true, showcase a new local restaurant, and more. As for my house, we're actually looking to truly renovate it now, and with it will finally come paint to that wall. Stay tuned.

Chandler International Film Festival is a Rousing Success

Around 8,000 people attended the festival, which returned to Chandler for a sixth year ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON

We are really feeling the Luck of the Irish with our amazing patients! Although we may be slightly partial, our patients continue to be the absolute best in town! We love seeing their smiling faces every day and having the opportunity to help them feel their absolute best!

The sixth Chandler International Film Festival (CIFF) is now in the books, and it’s safe to say the event was a definite success. Approximately 8,000 people attended the festival, which took place Jan. 18-23 at LOOK Dine-In Cinema. CIFF featured more than 120 films from over 35 countries and six continents, as well as movie maker workshops, Q&As, panel discussions, and celebrity guest appearances. Known as one of the fastest-growing film festivals in Arizona, CIFF was created to bring together filmmakers, industry professionals, and film fanatics to celebrate all genres of cinema. Actress Sean Young and actors Pat Finn and Bubba Ganter made appearances at the festival. Finn, who is wellknown for his Toyota commercials and has a long television and film career, also hosted an improv workshop during the event. “Our favorite nights of the festival were the opening night red carpet and closing night award ceremony. We also enjoyed all of our great workshops, such as Hashtag Blessed, Abandoned Creatures, Second Chances, and Apache Leap,” says Mitesh Patel, CIFF president and festival director. “I have already started working on next year’s event and I cannot wait.” ChandlerFilmFestival.com

Designed to Sell WHY STAGING YOUR HOME CAN LEAD TO BIG MONEY

ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SPICE UP YOUR HOME

Over the past couple of years, home sales in the Valley have continued to see a huge increase. In fact, home values soared more than 28% in 2021— and it is looking like 2022 will see much of the same type of activity. When it comes to selling a home, one of the most important factors is making the home welcoming and inviting to anyone entering. Whether it’s someone ready to purchase their first house or a family looking for their forever home, first impressions go a long way. Staging your home can be vital in capturing top dollar when selling your home. Talia Stennett, co-founder of Spice Up Your Home along with husband, Kerry, feels staging your home for an upcoming sale is probably the best money you can spend.

24

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

“Homeowners who go through the staging process can earn more than 10 times what the client spends on the service. Cost depends on the home location, square footage, one-story versus twostory floor plan, and the home’s uniqueness. More than 78% of homes using the staging process get sold faster and at a higher price.” Staging can help buyers see the potential of a room and traffic flows. Plus, empty rooms can actually look smaller than they really are, and staging can help them appear larger. Re/Max Alliance Group agent Cathy Carter says that staging can be mutually beneficial for both buyer and seller. “The home is set up as model-ready, and that can bring in a bigger payday for the seller. The buyer can benefit because they can have an easier time

knowing ideal placement for furniture and how a space can be utilized.” Many buyers look for homes online and professionally staged homes are eye-catching, encouraging more buyers to consider your property, even before they see it in person. Often, staging companies will bring in quality furniture and unique pieces to stage a home, as is the case with Stennett and her team at Spice Up Your Home, which offers furniture, rugs, wall art, and accessories in their Chandler store. However, if a budget doesn’t allow for that, Carter says there are options. “A staging company can come in and use the owner’s own furniture, which can help cut down on the costs for the sellers,” she says. LOCAL INTERIOR DESIGNER DENA THOMAS WEIGHS IN ON CURRENT STYLES, MATERIALS, AND MORE ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSAY BORG

No matter the size, bathrooms are meant to be a retreat—and Chandler interior designer Dena Thomas is already spotting some definite trends for 2022 for the very busy spaces in any home. “This year is bringing more warm colors into bathrooms,” says Thomas, who is the founder of Dena Thomas Designs. “Brass finishes are very big right now, and it is okay to mix and match finishes, as long as they coordinate.” Black matte finishes, white marble, bold wallpaper, vintage furniture, wood, and other organic elements like low-maintenance plants are also on this year's list. All-in-one shower and tub combination spaces, called wet rooms, are also trending this year, with multiple shower heads and spa-like aesthetics. It is important to use surfaces that are easy to clean, and to declutter the space for a sense of calm. Thomas says another key element for bathrooms that are being remodeled in 2022 involves replacing old tubs with free-standing models, along with floor mount or wall mount plumbing. For lighting, Thomas says clients are looking for something beyond the ordinary, and are often opting for beautiful and sparkly chandeliers that are customized to their taste. As for the flooring, she says luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, is sought after by many of her current clients, due in part to its versatility, waterproofing, and low maintenance. “Porcelain tiles in showers are still the way to go,” she notes. Many of these current trends and styles were selected and installed in two bathroom projects that Thomas and her team recently renovated. In one case, the homeowners selected LVP flooring to replace old large square tiles; for added visual interest, Thomas then surrounded the tub with the same type of CONTINUED >

attractive gray-and-white-patterned tile that was used in the shower. “I wanted to bring the shower accent tile into the tub surround,” she says. Rather than replace the cabinets, Thomas repainted them with a lighter and more modern color, and then removed the soffits in order to maximize the space of the bathroom, giving it an immediate look of added height. “We then added glorious light fixtures to fill the space,” she says. In the second bathroom, Thomas made many of the same types of upgrades and renovations, including replacing an old built-in tub surrounded by columns with a standalone model that instantly updated the look of the room. One main difference in the second project, she notes, is the addition of wallpaper, which is very popular right now. Thomas also found a way to solve a low-light issue in the bathroom. “The shower is a stand-alone, walk-in shower with a state-of-theart ceiling shower head and LED lights, as there is not natural light in that bathroom,” she explains. Thomas says she truly enjoys working with homeowners to transform their dated bathrooms into spaces that look much more modern and attractive. “I work with many kitchen and bathroom remodels, as well as more simple modifications of these spaces. We finish the room by adding new furniture, wall coverings, plush towels and artwork.” DenaThomasDesigns.com or Facebook.com/DenaThomasDesigns

“We take authentic ingredients and add a modern twist. We want our food to be delicious and extremely exciting.”

In a town full of Mexican eateries, one stands out for its vibrance, color, and larger-thanlife flair—K-38 Beach Mex Cantina on Alma School and Ocotillo in Chandler. Named after a popular cluster of excellent surf breaks located at kilometer 38 of the Baja Highway in Baja California, Mexico, K-38 strives to stand out above the rest with its scratch kitchen, quality ingredients, and excellent service. The owners of K-38, husband-and-wifeteam Anthony and Melisa Games, decided to open their own eatery after years of working in the restaurant industry after moving from California to Phoenix. “We were part of the team of a restaurant group and helped to open over 25 restaurants across the country,” says Melisa. “It was always a dream of ours to have our own place and express ourselves through food and world-class service.” K-38, which is located at 1155 W. Ocotillo Road, prides itself on quality food made from the freshest ingredients. The menu features dishes inspired by the cuisine of Baja. “We take authentic ingredients and add a modern twist,” Melisa shares. “We want our food to be delicious and extremely exciting.” Popular menu items include the Loaded Guac, made fresh daily with ripe avocados, mango pico de gallo, and pomegranate seeds; made-to-order Baja Fish Tacos; and the Surf and Turf Burrito, which is stuffed with filet mignon carne asada and margarita-grilled shrimp.

K-38's cocktail selection features Micheladas and 15 different margaritas, all made from fresh fruit juices and 100 percent Blue Weber Agave tequilas. “Our margarita flight is really popular, and so is the La Bomba Michelada, made with a 32 oz. Corona Familiar. It's really over-the-top.” “Over-the-top” is the ideal description for K-38, from the eclectic Instagram-worthy menu items to the vibrant murals and artwork found throughout the surf-inspired eatery. “We try to be anything but traditional,” Melisa says. The Games' have fallen in love with Chandler and have created an innovative way to give back to the community. K-38's Chips for Charity is a program in which the proceeds from every $3 order of chips and salsa are donated to local Chandler schools. “Chandler is an incredible community that we are excited to be a part of,” says Melisa. “It is our pleasure to give back.” K-38 Beach Mex Cantina also has a spacious patio from which to enjoy the beautiful Arizona spring weather. There are also daily specials, weekday happy hours, Margarita Mondays, Tako Tuesdays, and Kids Eat Free Wednesdays. “And, we offer catering and can host private parties,” Melisa shares. Soccer Dreams Come True

Phoenix Rising FC Signs Hamilton High School Alumni Channing Chasten ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON PHOTOG R APHY BY A SH LE Y ORE LL ANA , PHOE NIX RISING FC

AT H LE T E LIF E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

When he was about 5 years old, Channing Chasten began playing soccer. While he recalls trying a couple of other sports, Chasten says soccer quickly became his favorite. “Soccer was the one that stuck with me. It’s the one I fell in love with,” he says, adding that for years, he dreamed of first playing soccer in college at Ohio State, and then on a professional level. Chasten even wrote these two goals on a piece of paper when he was younger—a memento he still has to this day. Chasten, who is from Queen Creek and played soccer at Hamilton High School, has now achieved both of his childhood goals. After playing for Ohio State, he was signed in January by Phoenix Rising FC for a multi-year contract. The 21-year-old forward made 40 appearances for Ohio State in three seasons, scoring one goal and five assists in 1,859 minutes. “It was beyond exciting when I found out I was going to be signing with Phoenix Rising. To make a childhood dream come true is something to never take for granted,” Chasten says, adding that he is especially appreciative to play locally. “To start off my professional career in a place I’ve spent half my life is amazing. To have my family close by to see me play is amazing. I can’t wait to make them and my community proud.” Last summer, Chasten trained with and impressed Rising Head Coach Rick Schantz before returning for his junior season at Ohio State. “Channing is a very good player with a bright future,” Schantz says. “He is very athletic and can play right wing or right back. He gives us versatility and has a great ability to learn quickly from our experienced players. He should push for a starting position. I’m also very excited to add another player from Arizona. Building our youth program and developing players in Arizona is vital for our future. It is important for young players to see the opportunity of playing for Phoenix Rising in their hometown is achievable.” Chasten says he plans to complete his degree at Ohio State online while beginning his pro career with Rising. The twotime Academic All-Big Ten forward will provide depth in attacking roles for the top-scoring club in North America. “I am looking forward to learning from these experienced players here at Rising, and getting better every day. I love seeing myself progressing as a player,” he says, adding that his goal is to make his debut this season. “That is something I am really looking forward to. I like to live in the present and take it one day at a time.” Chasten, who had been to a few Phoenix Rising FC matches, says he was impressed by the great atmosphere and the energy the fans brought to the match. Now, he is excited to begin his professional career with Phoenix Rising, and continue to play the game he has loved since he was a young boy. “What I love about soccer is that I can express myself through the way I play. I consider myself a creative player who likes to make things happen. Soccer is the perfect sport for that because there are no set plays or rules to follow in each situation. The fluidity of the game is what makes it so appealing and beautiful to me.” Phoenix Rising FC is the highest-level professional soccer franchise in Arizona history. Cathy helped me purchase my first starter home and kept me well informed throughout the process. She knew the Chandler area extremely well and I had complete trust in her to negotiate the best possible deal even in this very challenging buyers market. I was pleased with the entire experience and outcome so recommend her highly! - Austin F.
