IT MY GREAT-GRANDMOTHER. As I stepped off the plane and the blast of warm air hit my face, I looked at the looming mountains, the abundance of cacti and the stunning blue sky, and I knew I wanted to live in Arizona when I grew up. That is one of my earliest memories. Fast-forward many years, and three weeks after I graduated college I moved to the Valley. That was 20 years ago, and I still love it here. Arizona has always had a special place in my heart, and I’ve enjoyed watching as Chandler has grown as a destination. And now, I get to share all the stories, places and other great things about it with you. I’m honored to be a part of the magazine and this community, and I’m excited to get

Should I Repair or Replace My A/C Unit? An air conditioning unit is generally the 3rd largest purchase a homeowner will make, so I wanted to share some expert advice on determining when you are spending good or bad money when it comes to your air conditioning unit. Many of the older units were built to last. You could just keep replacing major components and keep your AC running, so the decision to not bite the bigger expense was always justified. After all, a $3,000 repair still sounds better than a $6 to $8,000 new unit. But the best decision that pays off in the long run comes from evaluating several factors.

I always tell people than when you start to spend more on repairs than you do on maintenance, it is a good time to at least start gathering A/C replacement quotes. Continual problems and repairs are the first sign your unit is creeping towards “end of days”. So at least having time to prepare and not make a hasty and expensive decisions will save you money and stress. Each repair might just be money wasted to buy you more time.

Age is a Key Factor

Next, look at unit age. I talk to people all the time who still have AC units from the 90s and 2000s. Those 20-30 year old units initially were built with a 6-8 SEER, but with age is maybe operating now at a 2-3 SEER. If you were to replace it with a new 14 SEER unit you just gained 7x the energy efficiency. Your AC unit accounts for about 50% of your energy consumption, so that hefty of a SEER increase could easily save around a$1,000 a year on utility bills. Now that $3,000 repair bill doesn’t seem like such a good return on investment anymore, right? Instead you could replace your unit and have the utility savings now and they also pay you more over the next decade. Not to mention you won’t have the headaches and hot house stress with no working AC for a period of time. CHANDLER WELCOMED ITS NEWEST RESTAURANT, WHICH IS ALREADY MAKING QUITE A SPLASH IN THE COMMUNITY. Brunch hot spot Hash Kitchen boasts an expansive menu, mimosas, imaginative cocktails, a massive Bloody Mary bar, and turntables. It’s brunch-a-tainment—brunch and entertainment all rolled into one. Joey Maggiore is the innovative chef behind Hash Kitchen, which he founded with his wife, Christine Maggiore—although the entire family is in the industry. “My wife and I also own The Sicilian Butcher, and my father, Tomaso Maggiore, has Tomaso’s and Tomaso’s When in Rome,” Maggiore explains. “My sister, Melissa Meyer, has a restaurant in California called Tommy V’s Urban Kitchen, but she’s moved to Arizona and is looking to open another location here and she’s helping out with our father’s business.” He says family members, along with partner Flora Tersigni, walk into each other’s restaurants to help, as all the restaurants are part of The Maggiore Group of restaurants. There are two Hash Kitchens in Scottsdale, and the Chandler location follows the same design and whimsical appeal. In choosing a Chandler location, Maggiore did his research. “We saw there was a big missing gap for an amazing brunch concept,” he says. “When I found the location and saw the families and how dense the population was in the area, we were excited to put it there.” The Hash Kitchen menu is as fun and engaging as the restaurant’s décor. Maggiore handles the menu development for all The Maggiore Group concepts, and the menu evolves slightly every 90-120 days. Naturally, Hash Kitchen is known for its namesake Hash Kitchen boasts the biggest Bloody Mary bar in Arizona, with nearly 50 craft toppings for guests to enjoy. Choices include a variety of skewed bacons, craft pickles, deviled eggs, baby corn, pickled pineapple and a number of craft olives.

Other hashes include Shrimp Paella, Corned Beef, Italian, and several others.

Pancakes, French toast, fruit and egg dishes round out the breakfast and brunch menus. Lunch options include salads, craft sliders, burgers and sandwiches. The creativity doesn’t stop with the hash options. The heavenly BuildYour-Own Bloody Mary bar includes nearly 50 craft toppings. Mimosas and specialty bottles like Veuve Clicquot and Dom Pérignon are on the menu, plus specialty cocktails like Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Puffs and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal shooters. If a guest is really feeling the scene they will want to order the Mocha Frappuccino cocktail with a large pressed cotton candy garnish, served in a shimmering disco ball.

“In Chandler, we really wanted to step up our alcohol and bar scene game,” explains Maggiore. “We want the wow factor, and our mixologist Sheldon Wiley does an amazing job.” Building on the wow factor, Hash Kitchen features a DJ each Friday through Sunday, as well as holidays. Maggiore says, “Anybody can do a brunch place. To be really out-of-the-box we needed five or six key elements, and two of those elements are the music and the vibe.” The entire restaurant exudes a fun social media-friendly atmosphere that lets guests of any age get in on the fun, and the food and ambiance photo possibilities are endless. A couple more Hash Kitchens are planned for Arizona before expansion into Denver and Dallas. “What I really loved about opening in Chandler is that it is very pro-business, obviously,” Maggiore says. “But, the open arms we had from city councilmembers was amazing. Hash Kitchen guests are excited, and we see locals over and over and that’s a really heartwarming feeling.”

As an avid collector of watches, Harris has several in his arsenal, but this one quickly became his favorite. “It’s a symbol of our love and commitment,” he says. “I’m a Godfearing man who believes that behind every man stands a strong woman. I believe that I’m able to persevere through anything with her as my wife. She’s the glue who holds our precious family together.” That family includes six children, including their oldest son, Vaughn, who’s also become a watch collector. “He learned early on in childhood the importance of wearing a wrist watch. I have always given him my older watches so that he can continue to add to his collection,” Harris says. Harris has been an educator for 17 years and works for the Higley Unified School District as the Director of Federal Programs. He’s also coached youth basketball at the Chandler/Gilbert Family YMCA for the past 6 years and calls himself a “true champion for education.” His name may look familiar as he’s currently running for a seat on the Chandler City Council.

Cuff Links DR. TOM CHAMBERLAIN Dr. Tom Chamberlain was only 20-years-old when his father passed away, but when he puts on his dad’s cuff links, he immediately feels close to him. He remembers his dad as a hardworking and strong person with a quiet demeanor who taught him to respect those he loved, like his future wife, Tamara. “The cuff links have a subtle elegance about them,” he says. “I actually have about three different pairs of his cuff links but I like these the most because they fit his personality as I remember him—understated but full of class.” Chamberlain carries more than just memories of his father; he also carries his name. As the owner of Chamberlain Orthodontics in Chandler, his practice gives back to the community in meaningful ways and has won several “Best of” awards for patient satisfaction. While he admits that his style is more conservative during the workweek, he’s not afraid to get a little creative with his ensemble on the weekends. “I like to mix it up with a driving cap, skinny jeans and Vans,” he says. “And I’m always wearing fun, vibrant socks. That way, I can be all business up top but have a party going on underneath!”

Nike Air Jordan JIM GRIESHABER Jim Grieshaber remembers the first time he saw Michael Jordan fly through the air and dunk. “There was no player before him who combined that explosive athleticism and graceful body control,” he says. “Then, the Air Jordan came out and we had NEVER seen anything like them before.” As soon as the iconic Air Jordan 1 hit the shelves, they were gone. “I mowed lawns and shoveled snowy driveways to make the money for them. As the years went by I never stopped getting them. I’ve had hundreds of pairs over the years,” he says. Grieshaber travels often as a TV/radio host and play-by-play voice announcer. When he’s packing his bags, there’s no doubt that his Jordans are coming along for the ride. He almost always wears designer jeans and his Js, coupled with a branded T-shirt or something dressy like a button-down shirt with a jacket. No matter the occasion, “I always have the jeans and the Js on—even when I wear suits,” he says. One of his most memorable career highlights was when he interviewed Michael Jordan during the 1997 NBA Finals: “I showed him my shoes, he looked down and said, ‘Alright, you got some style... now let’s see if you got the game to back it up.’ I asked him if my interview was as tight as my shoes and he said, ‘As close as you can get, but you can’t beat my shoes.’ I’ll never forget that.” September 2018 | Chandler Lifestyle

H AT S H O P THEIR TALE IS THE MAKING OF AN OLD WESTERN. Eric and Emily Watson trekked across the country seeking work during the recession and planted roots in the town of Cave Creek by opening a hat shop. Eric is the master hatter, and Emily, the business manager who does lovely ribbon work on the ladies’ hats. Both of their families helped grow Watson’s Hat Shop until it became so popular that a larger location was needed. Today, the Watsons are commercial pilots, with a head for business and a passion for hats. They use a nearly 200-year-old process to make their hats, and their shop, nestled in Stagecoach Village, is renowned. The Watsons are even the official hat maker for the Netflix Western series Godless. Family still helps occasionally, except for Uncle Brad and Derby, their greeter and shop dog—they work regularly. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A HAT SHOP? Eric: Having graduated during the recession, it was difficult to find pilot jobs, especially in Ohio where we’re from. So, we moved to Arizona in 2011 for Emily's flight career. Struggling to find happiness with the job I had at the time, I looked at my wife and told her I was going to take matters into my own hands by starting a business making hats. WHEN DID YOUR LOVE OF HATS BEGIN? I got into hats and hat making when I was 12-years-old. I was, and still am, a huge Indiana Jones fan. I had to have a fedora just like Indy's, and I didn't want a cheap version that was of poor quality. My mom took me around to antique stores. I used my mom's soup pot to boil water for steam as I worked tirelessly to fix and shape those old hats to perfection. HOW DID YOU BECOME A MASTER HATTER? I reached out to some hat makers in the country, but very few took me seriously and were reluctant to share techniques. I learned a great deal from some of them, but most of what I know is self-taught by trial and error. WHAT’S YOUR SHOP LIKE? You will feel transported back in time. Anyone can watch the hats being made. All of the equipment we use is vintage, from the sewing machines to the 1920’s hatter's steam table. WHY GO CUSTOM? A hat is an extension of one's character. [A customer] can design what they truly want. We can properly fit any head size or shape. We also take a head impression with a 120-year-old device called a hatter's conformateur. It’s fun! There’s a whole wall of demo hats. Once we narrow down the style and color, we measure, size, and pick out the accessories such as feathers, buckles, ribbons, and hat bands. It takes us about a week to make the hat. If someone has what we call a "hat emergency," we can produce a hat in as little as 48 hours. DO YOU SELL OTHER NAME BRANDS TOO? All the felt and panama hats are ours. For the summer, we offer a variety of factory-made Western straw hats. This is a courtesy to the working cowboys and ranchers who are typically looking for a seasonal lighter-weight straw hat to endure the hot summer months. DO YOU RESTORE HATS? Customers bring in their hats to be cleaned, re-blocked, resized— you name it. It’s always a treat when someone chooses to honor their grandparent's memory by cleaning and wearing their old hat. DO YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING STORY TO SHARE? We’ve made hats for various celebrities and singers. We also made the hats for the main characters on Netflix's Western series Godless. It’s such a joy to be able to share the love of hats and hat making with today's generation. It is important to keep lost arts alive. 32

Fox suggests using her own personal process: Flip all of your hangers backward so the hook that hangs on the closet bar faces you, making it a little more difficult to pull out. After you wear each item, hang

If you’re wearing a lot of pencil skirts, button-downs, sleek khakis and casual sweaters, your style could be professional and simplistic. Cross-reference those with your selfies and decide whether you look like them or whether those (pieces) would look good on you,” Fox says.

3. HAVE I WORN IT IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS? Remember Fox’s hanger exercise? Of those that are hanging backwards after a year, determine which ones you truly cannot live without (think cocktail dresses, wedding attire or that sweater your grandmother gave you 10 years ago that holds a special place in your heart). “I remember the event I was at and the feeling I had or the people I was with, and it’s challenging for me to separate myself from those memories when it’s just an article of clothing.
