All Good Things Must Come to an End IT'S BITTERSWEET TO WRITE THIS LETTER, AS IT WILL BE MY LAST AS EDITOR OF THIS MAGAZINE. Over the last 14 months, I've thoroughly enjoyed this post but the time has come for my reign to end. This wasn't an easy decision but after weeks of long discussions with my husband and some soul-searching, I've decided to scale back on work to spend more time with our daughters. This time with them, while they're this young, is fleeting, and I'd like to cherish as much of it as I can. As cliche as it sounds, you can't get this time back—and I'm starting to realize that more and more as they get older. I'll miss you all, but I leave you in great hands as the new editor is not only a professional colleague and friend of mine, but someone who is vastly knowledgable in the field of publishing and has years of editorial experience. I'm confident she'll find you the best local stories to keep you in-the-know about all things Chandler. I'll let her announce who she is, so be on the lookout for her introduction in next month's letter. While my time as editor wasn't long, my love for Chandler is everlasting. See you around!

LOCAL NONPROFITS SUPPORT GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN Duet: Partners In Health & Aging and Clothes Cabin has formed a partnership to offer a support group and other resources for grandparents raising grandchildren in Chandler. The support group takes place the third Friday of every month at Clothes Cabin, located at 1100 N. Alma School Road, Suite 9. In this new collaboration, Clothes Cabin provides the space for the monthly support group, which is facilitated by Duet. Clothes Cabin’s current clients are welcome at the Duet support group. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE A HOUSE WITH TWO KIDS, SIX DOGS AND A CAT, AND DO ALL OF YOUR PETS GET ALONG? DR. ASGARI: “It’s constant work feeding everyone and taking care of how everyone is eating, feeling and sleeping. My husband handles a lot of the four-legged kids responsibilities and we all share chores. Rocky is in charge of keeping water bowls filled and both Rocky and Ella have to pick up poop!” DID YOU GET YOUR PETS THROUGH A PET RESCUE OR DID YOU GET THEM THROUGH A BREEDER? DR. ASGARI: “We got our animals through a combination of breeders and taking them from owners who could no longer care for them.” WHAT IS THE BIGGEST STRUGGLE LIVING IN A HOUSE WITH ALL THOSE DOGS? GEORGE, THE CAT: “I find my own spots to sleep, far away from the dogs, but I don’t mind playing with the small dogs.” WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THE HOUSE? REX: "I'm young and energetic. I am in charge by default because the other dogs are simply old and tired!” HONEY, HOW COME IT SEEMS THAT YOU'RE ALWAYS IN TROUBLE? HONEY: “I’m small and can get into things I’m not supposed to. There are gates up around the house, but I always find a way to squeeze through!”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT ZELLY? IZABELLA: “I've spent more than half of my life with her and she knows me so well, she even waits for me to walk through the door each day after school. I remember picking her out when she was a baby. She ran right over to me!” HOW DO YOU SPOIL YOUR DOG? OLIVIA: “We take her to get pampered with Diane at the Dirty Dawg Salon, play with her, cuddle with her, give her treats and just plain love her.” WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU'VE DONE? ZELLY: “My best friend, the chihuahua across the street, used to come over but he moved away last year. I did recently meet a cool cat named Gizmo that lives next door. Mancuso opened Modern Roots in 2015 and it's become her labor of love. She handpicks every fabric and style and, using four different machines, she designs, handcuts and sews every piece of clothing. When that's done, she checks them to make sure they're up to her standards before she tags, packs and ships them off to their new homes. The first day she opened her online shop, she was "terrified" but recalls finding some relief when she made a sale on her very first day. "It was Sept. 15, 2015 and I still remember the name of my very first customer," she says. "The order was for a personalized headband for a girl

LALAthreads happened after a lengthy and disappointing online search for matching mommy-and-me T-shirts to wear with her daughter on vacation resulted in a dead end. "As I exited Etsy, leaving behind the overpriced T-shirts, I thought to myself, 'I could do so much better,'" she says. In March 2016, she officially opened her online store with the goal of making high-quality, affordable, matching mommy-and-me shirt sets. To create her pieces, she comes up with a concept and then sketches it out. "As a former English teacher, I love puns and making people smile with witty little phrases," she says. She works with a professional screen printer who takes the sketch and creates the design on a computer before it gets printed onto the shirts. "One of the things I pride myself on most is the quality of the products I create," Sublette says. "The shirts I use are soft, well-made and fit very well. MAGAZINE COVERS AND REDEFINING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A-LIST FAMOUS. Lois Zozobrado has two albums under her 18-year-old belt, but she's not one of them. The Perry High School graduate eyes a more discreet and, in her eyes, more rewarding role in the industry. She talks about her experiences in Nashville, a music city fueled by more grind than glitz. She speaks in awe of experienced musicians who have spent years building their craft. They aren’t household names but they’re the reasons many of those stars are. “I want to do that," Zozobrado says. "I’m not striving to be super famous. I want to be in the music business, behind the scenes.” For now, however, the Chandler teen is a working musician who performs in various Valley venues at least two or three nights each week. But it wasn’t so long ago that Zozobrado fled the limelight. As a child, she had severe stage fright. An old soul who had outgrown the playground at an early age, Zozobrado was bullied, which added to her trepidation. Around age 13, her mother’s encouragement changed that. “You have a gift from God and you’re not going to hide it,” Zozobrado says of her mother’s advice, which sparked her participation in theater. “I practiced and got used to it.” She started performing solo and songwriting. At age 14, she penned all 10 songs on her debut album, Sunshine Boulevard, with the help of Grammywinning producer Robb Vallier. 32

Not long after, Zozobrado endured two surgeries to remove vocal nodules in her throat. The second prevented her from speaking for six months. Frustrated, she channeled that energy into shoring up her songwriting craft. She recovered and at 16, auditioned for The Voice, making it to round two. In May, she released People I Knew, containing nine songs inspired by people in her life. It reflects her growth into young adulthood. For People, Zozobrado emphasized acoustic instruments over plugged-in sounds. Her songs take on grown-up themes, creating a collection that she says is more raw and real. “I’ve experienced heartbreak, losing a voice for six months. I experienced loving someone I thought I could never love. You don’t really experience those things when you’re young,” she says. This fall, Zozobrado will attend Arizona State University with hopes of transferring to Nashville’s Belmont University, which has a music business program. Zozobrado’s passion for music may only be rivaled by her passion for volunteering. Her parents, James and Jeanne, led by example and inspired her to donate her time to various causes. Earlier this year, the city of Chandler honored Zozobrado with its Youth Volunteer Recognition Award for her enthusiastic contributions to a bevy of organizations, including her extensive work with the Chandler Center for the Arts. As Perry’s National Honor Society President and DECA Outreach Officer during her senior year, Zozobrado continued her involvement with ICAN, Team Emery, Feed My Starving Children and CCPA. Eventually, Zozobrado envisions living in Nashville, likely traveling and touring with artists and writing hits for stars while performing on the side. And being on the sidelines making the spotlight shine brighter on others while remaining content with a fulfilling low-profile role is music to her ears. “Going to Nashville and seeing musicians going to honky-tonks, playing just for tips. How to extend the life of your aging AC unit
I can’t stress enough that simple annual preventative maintenance is the one thing you can do that will add extra years of life to your AC unit and prevent breakdowns. That is why I created the “Complete Tune Up” years ago providing everything to keep a system in optimal shape for performance and longevity. It is over $680 worth of parts and physical work on your system for just $159.95. If your unit is old and problematic, then you really should take some time to prepare so you don’t have the panic that comes with an unexpected new AC unit purchase. The first rule of thumb is when you are spending more on repairs than maintenance and your unit is 12-15 years old, it is definitely time to start shopping. This at least gives you time to prepare and know what your options are. Here are things you should expect to see to insure you are getting the best information and pricing. Newer units are made with higher efficiency and capacity, however, the BTU output which is the required amount to effectively cool the square footage in your home, has changed. You may not always be best served replacing like for like in tonnage. In order to give the accurate BTU and tonnage requirement, a Heat Load Calc, also referred to as a Manual J Load Calc, should be done. It takes into account the home’s square footage, location and number of windows and doors relative to sun exposure, and ceiling heights along with how much insulation is in your attic. It gives you the most accurate unit size needed. If you buy an AC unit slightly undersized, it will run all the time and there goes the efficiency you wanted from your new unit. If it is oversized, it will short cycle and not run long enough which puts immense wear on the unit. So expect a contractor to spend a good hour or more in your home looking at these things before they provide you an estimate. If they just tell you here is what you have so here is what you need, keep shopping. Next is the issue of pricing. Most units unfortunately have their final meltdown during the summer’s extreme heat. So you are pressed to make some fast decisions in order to bring cool comfort back to your home. Unfortunately, some contractors will take advantage of that weak point and offer higher than normal or even gouged pricing. The average new AC unit replacement should run between $6,000 and $8,000. If you are getting some crazy high estimates, keep shopping. Lastly, when shopping, one factor that determines price is the energy efficiency or SEER Rating. Today’s minimum is a 14 SEER which is probably double what your older unit is putting out. That makes for a nice savings come utility bill time. Units can go up to 20 or 22 SEER but the high cost does not really payoff in long term energy savings. A 16 SEER unit is probably your best value and return on investment. "Taste what you give them, know your child’s palate and what they look for when they're trying to avoid veggies.” You can’t go wrong with pizza, especially if it’s a pizza roll. “What better way than to mix, veggies into the pizza sauce? It’s great for kids who have a fight-or-flight relationship with veggies.

with marinara. 2. In large bowl combine flour, sugar, yeast and
salt. Add water. Stir until a ball forms. Knead for 5 minutes on a lightly floured surface. 3.
