The instant sauna that hits your entire body the minute you step outside, the makeup that melts off while the car air conditioner is ramping up, the pool that feels like bath water at 4 p.m. It's hot. All the time. Everywhere. And it doesn't end.

inconveniences. These are the days where I'm counting down to that first chill in the air, which arrives some time in late October. It's like the entire city takes a deep sigh of relief and gives a group high-five, as if to say, "Yay, we did it! We made it through another summer!" But there's also things that I enjoy about our scorching-hot days, like the seasonal fruits that are overflowing at the grocery store. Yes, please, to sweet blueberries, strawberries, peaches, corn and watermelon. Yes, please, to eating popsicles in the pool and having chips and guac and margaritas for dinner. Summers are also meant for vacations and staycations. We recently spent a week in the North Shore of Hawaii where we ate shaved ice and played on the warm beaches all day

He Builds It, They Play It JASON KOSTAL HUMBLY ENJOYS INTERNATIONAL FAME AS AMONG THE WORLD’S BEST LUTHIERS ARTICLE GEORGANN YARA

HIS WORK IS WORLD FAMOUS. Yet in his home state, renowned luthier Jason Kostal is a wellkept secret in the acoustic guitar and musical instrument worlds. One of his guitars holds a permanent spot at the Musical Instrument Museum in the North American room that showcases all handmade instruments made on the continent. Kostal recalls museum personnel assuming he lived in California. “They just couldn’t fathom that I was a local builder. It was kind of funny,” the East Valley resident and business owner says. His company, Kostal Guitars, creates custom pieces that carry price tags of $25,000-$30,000 a piece. Worldwide clients know him as one of about two-dozen people in the world who does what he does. Most are touring musicians with songs on the radio. His wait list is seven years long. It’s a commitment clients are willing to make. So is Kostal. “That’s a long period of time that we can really talk through and correlate what they’re hoping to get out of it, and into building that system for them,” Kostal says. A native of Milwaukee, Kostal started playing guitar at age 4 and formally studied through high school. He graduated from West Point and served in the Army from 1994 to 2006, where he was stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Here, music served as a stabilizer on an uncontrollable plain. “In times of emotional highs and lows, music brought me back,” says Kostal, citing tunes such as “Amazing Grace” and the National Anthem. By now, Kostal had been playing and building guitars for years. He decided to make it professional. After an apprenticeship with a San Francisco luthier, Kostal moved to Arizona and his business was born in 2006. After a first few tricky years, Kostal found his groove—and success. Kostal is on the board of directors of the 98 Fund, the Virginia-based nonprofit he co-founded that provides college scholarships and assistance to families of fallen soldiers. Sarah Williams, owner of Desert Paddleboards, says people may register for her classes, which are held on Saturdays at the Hamilton Aquatic Center, through the city of Chandler Aquatic website. “I started the paddleboard yoga classes because I wanted to build people’s confidence and get them out paddleboarding on a lake or river. If they can make it through a paddleboard yoga class, they can paddleboard on a lake,” Williams says. “It’s so hot in the summer, being in a pool makes working out refreshing and fun, and the classes are suitable for everyone. The worst thing that can happen is you fall in the pool. When it’s hot out, that’s pretty enjoyable!” To

TIP 5: HYDRATION IS VITAL Dogs need approximately one ounce of water per pound on a typical day, and double on a hot day. Try using a gravity water dispenser with filtrated water to keep dogs healthy and hydrated. In severe situations, use cool water to dampen the back of your dog’s neck and paws. TIP 6: TEACH PETS TO USE POOL STAIRS Pets are more likely to encounter the pool in the summer when it’s hot outside. Whether they jump in intentionally or accidentally, it’s highly recommended to teach your pets how to use the stairs so they can go for a dip and climb out themselves. TIP 7: DON’T TAKE YOUR DOG HIKING Dogs are banned from mountain hiking trails when the temperature is over 100 degrees in Phoenix, so head up north to explore the trails in the High Country. Try the West Fork Trail in Sedona or Rim Vista near the Mogollon Rim. Dr. Stickland reminds owners to protect pets with flea and tick preventative medication. TIP 8: USE SUNSCREEN Did you know dogs can get sunburned? Dogs with light skin and thin coats are more likely to burn so rub some sunscreen on their bellies, inner thighs, nose and tips of their ears. Look for “PABA-free” when choosing a sunscreen and avoid zinc oxide. There are several sunscreens that can be used on dogs, but Dr. Stickland recommends Neutrogena Helioplex. DIRECTIONS Prepare pineapple by skinning and cutting a pineapple into large chunks. Roast on high heat under a broiler until pineapple starts to blacken. Put roasted pineapple in blender with pineapple juice, there should be a 50/50 mix of pineapple to juice. Puree. Add roasted pineapple puree to a shaker with mezcal, coconut water and agave nectar.

29 HELP HOMELESS SENIORS GET ENOUGH WATER

Would you like to cut your utility bills up to 30%? Well, an easy question to answer. Of course! But how do you do it? What is the cost? When does that cost convert to a payback?

Here are several key things you can do to make drastic cuts on your energy cost as well as a few simple tips that add up to a little extra savings on top of that. First, off, we live in the desert and yes it is hot here. Once the 100 degree plus temperatures start, so does the hardest work from your AC unit along with that dreaded higher utility bill. If you have a flat roof home, make sure your roof is well foamed and re-coated every 5 to 6 years with a good reflective coating. Attic homes have more options for drastic energy cost cuts. Think about what your car feels like in the summer heat. It is 110 outside but up to 180 degrees in your car. Then you have to run the air full blast for a few minutes to cool it back down. Now, think of your home. Your attic is that car baking at up to 180 degrees with a literal oven on top of your ceiling. It heats up your home continuously which makes your AC run longer and harder. At Precision Air & Heating, our Home Performance division offers 3 fold approach to removing attic heat. First we add additional insulation in your attic to spec up to an R-49 value. R-value is a measurement of thermal resistance and the ability for heat to transfer from one side of an object to another. A home after 10 years will lose up to 3 inches of insulation just by the nature of settling. That lowers the R-value which was probably still initially built with minimum standards. Next, we apply a radiant barrier solar reflective coating that deflects up to 80% of thermal penetration. Finally, the big key is adding in low profile, non-mechanical vents, that literally pull the hot air out the attic. It gives the same effect as cracking your car windows to allow the heat to escape. They are even painted to match the existing roof so you never even see them. Homeowners, can do 1, 2 or all 3 of these things to remove attic heat, but when all 3 are done, what was once a 180 degree attic is now maybe just a few degrees warmer than the inside temperature of the home so it makes a tremendous difference. I hear all the time from customers how it literally took hundreds off their monthly summer utility bills. It also works the same way in the winter keeping the heat in and the cold air out. Another smart recommendation is upgrading to a smart learning thermostat like the Nest. They learn your habits and will add a nice addition to your utility savings.
