WE ARE ONE MONTH INTO 2018 AND MANY RESOLUTIONS HAVE ALREADY COME AND GONE. While we always start the New Year with the best intentions, only 7 percent of those commitments are ever realized. As a local Chandler business, this year I have promised to be intentional when shopping and spending my money. I pledge to “shop local” and avoid driving outside our community; avoid the chains and big box stores; and avoid the convenience of online shopping. Amazon and Best Buy are doing little to contribute to an improved lifestyle for us Chandlerites and we all need to think about that more. Our first annual Readers’ Choice Awards is a great way to recognize those businesses and professionals who are investing in making Chandler a better place to live and work. I have to admit; I did not anticipate the flood of nominations and votes that we would receive! Nor

ARIZONA United Kingdom-based LUX magazine named Cuisine & Wine Bistro "Best Wine Bar & Restaurant" in Maricopa County as part of its international 2017 Food & Drink Awards. Cuisine & Wine Bistro, with locations in Chandler and Gilbert, also received the Culinary Excellence Award for its authentic French cuisine, the brainchild of Executive Chef Fabrice Buschtetz. He is a third-generation restaurateur, following in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents in France. Buschtetz, along with his Irish wife Mairead and their grown children, started Cuisine & Wine Bistro in March 2015 with the opening of their Gilbert location at 1422 W. Warner Road. The Chandler restaurant followed in August 2016 in the Promenade at Fulton Ranch. CHANDLER OFFERS FREE TAX PREPARATION Tax season has arrived! Chandler’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is ready to assist residents. Chandler’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) campaign helps working families who earned less than $54,000 in 2017 with free tax preparation and filing services. Five tax preparation sites in Chandler are set to open this month and operate through early April. All sites will prepare basic tax forms on a first-come, first-served basis, with the exception of one site that will take appointments only. Interpreters also are available at some sites to assist Spanish-speaking residents. All volunteers are certified with the Internal Revenue Service and have completed a VITA training program. CHANDLER CITY COUNCIL NAMES NORA ELLEN VICE MAYOR The Chandler City Council voted unanimously to elect Councilmember Nora Ellen as the city’s new Vice Mayor. Ellen will serve in the position for approximately one year. A resident of Chandler since 2002, she has served on the city council since January 2013. Ellen currently serves on the Maricopa Association of Governments Transportation Policy Committee, the Chandler Chamber Education Forum Committee, the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee and Southeast Valley Association of Realtors Government Affairs Committee. She also serves on the board of directors of the nonprofit Pregnancy Care Centers of Chandler and Gilbert, which helps women and families in crisis. Ellen also initiated the city’s Operation Welcome Home program, which recognizes military members in our community. She has a lifetime of volunteer service and leadership positions through children’s clubs, the Kyrene School Curriculum Task Force, PTO, Christian Services Association, women’s sports, homeless counseling, youth mentoring, fundraising and music teams. She has also assisted in elderly care, orphanage support, the Care 7 Crisis Response Team, Hope for Mexico and has served as a trustee in her local church. Besides her work serving the council and the community, she also is a real estate associate broker at Revelation Real Estate. Ellen’s term on the Chandler City Council will expire in January 2021. 16

An air conditioning unit is generally the 3rd largest purchase a homeowner will make, so I wanted to share some expert advice on how extend the life of your home’s AC unit and save you money in the long run.

Preventative Maintenance is Key

Think about your car. You get regular oil changes and check the fluid levels. An AC unit is no different. It is a mechanical piece of equipment that performs better with regular maintenance. Checking the electrical diagnostics is imperative as a loose connection can cause wires to burn and lead to more expensive repairs. A dirty coil is common here in the desert and clogs the air flow of your unit making it work harder and wear out much sooner. It also chips away at the longevity of your unit. Just imagine if you didn’t sweep your patio for a year what it would look like. That is what a dirty coil looks like.

Remove All Blockages

Most importantly, change those air filters! The rule of thumb is once a month. Dirty air filters lessen your air quality and strain the air flow. Take a look at the cheap ones you see at the store and see how transparent they are. They only filter out about 10-15% of the dust. I recommend a permanent washable filter that you clean once a month. In addition, bugs and leaves make their way into the drain line so it also needs to be flushed out.

Beware of “Cheap” Tune-Ups

20 years ago, I was sitting at a Jiffy Lube watching cars receiving maintenance and asked myself, “why don’t we do a checkup and tune-up on AC units?” That’s when the Precision Complete Tune-Up was invented. We took all the things we know that need to be done and put them into a one stop package. A 35 point diagnostic, condenser coil clean, condensate drain line flush, a new permanent washable air filter, and if needed up to 1 lb of Freon and an electrical component. Buyer beware of those $40 - $60 tune-ups which are just inspections that add on these same items with a hefty price tag. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a tune-up a year, will keep your AC unit running better without the fear... of a breakdown.
