Welcome to 2018
I FEEL LIKE THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF PEOPLE: THOSE WHO MAKE NEW YEAR'S
RESOLUTIONS AND THOSE WHO DON'T. Which one are you? I used to be the former and, thanks to my charming Type-A personality (insert smirk here) I was pretty intense about it. It was black or white, all in or all out. When I made resolutions, I kept them—there were no excuses. Nowadays, I'm older and have a family, home and career to manage so life is a bit messier and I live in the gray more than anywhere else. I've lowered my expectations and standards and have learned to give myself more grace (which is a skill that I believe can only be refined with time). And you know what? I'm still happy and life is great! So, there's that. That being said, I'm still lured to this idea of a fresh start in the New Year, but my resolutions are now more realistic. This year, I only have one and that is to be more present with my family. I'm going to put my phone down, turn off the TV and other screens, and soak up this time with them. My oldest starts kindergarten (!!!) soon. I've heard the "they're only this little for so long" cliche many times and, if I'm being honest, I've rolled my eyes. But now, it's setting in and I'm starting to get it. I've made baby steps to stay true to my resolution. I order my groceries online so all I

leven-year-old Chandler resident Andrew Burkhart has cerebral palsy. A couple of months ago he suffered a stress fracture on his foot, which meant he had to wear a boot and temporarily give up many of the things he enjoys doing—like attending Arizona Diamondbacks games and seeing his favorite mascot, Baxter. That’s when Erik Bryan, owner of Precision Air & Heating, stepped in by reaching out to the Dbacks and arranging an exciting day for this very special boy once he was out of his boot! Andrew arrived at the stadium for what he thought was a stadium tour—but what he got instead was an experience of a lifetime. As Andrew made his way onto the field, Baxter ran out to surprise him. They ran bases together and tried out the batting cages. Baxter even autographed his forehead! Every digital screen in the stadium had “Welcome, Andrew!” displayed. As if this would not be enough for any fan, Andrew was suddenly called to the dugout where the phone rang. He was officially asked to be a part of the team! Leaving the dugout and making his way to the team’s locker room,
heart
he was shown to an honorary locker displaying his name, complete with a commemorative bat, hat and team jersey. Andrew Burkhart was now an honorary Diamondback! Being different at school can sometimes be hard for kids. But the next week, Andrew felt even more special when he was allowed to share his experience with his classmates. As we enter this New Year, remember to help others simply because you can. It doesn’t always mean opening your wallet. All it takes is opening your heart to do something good, kind and inspirational. It is easier than you think and more rewarding than you could ever imagine.

YOGA +CYCLE
IF YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE IS BECOMING, WELL, ROUTINE, PERHAPS IT’S TIME TO BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO WHAT MAKES YOU SWEAT. And, there’s no shortage of hot exercises that are sure to get your heart pumping, muscles burning and mind racing—all in a good way. Kick off the New Year with one of the new fitness trends that's inspiring both veteran and rookie exercisers to hit the studio. Here are four that pledge to make getting fit, fun.
YOGA + CYCLE FUSION WHAT IT IS:
“ WE THROW OVER 1,000 PUNCHES PER CL ASS AND BURN ANYWHERE FROM 600 TO 1,000 CALORIES.”
FLO's yoga and cycling fusion classes combine two exercises that put the body through its paces, yet are gentler than jarring running or jumping workouts. “Cycling and yoga are low impact. It’s a smoother movement for the joints without the impact,” says Debbie Davis, who owns FLO Yoga & Cycle with her husband, Eddie. A fusion class is comprised of 30 minutes of cycling followed by 30 minutes of yoga, like active flow yoga or calming yin yoga that focuses on deep stretching. WHY IT WORKS: The mash-up means the body doesn’t have time to figure out how to go through the routine with as little exertion as possible. This, Eddie explains, is the key to progress. “If you do the same things day in and day
BOXING
out, your body won’t allow itself to get faster or more flexible. The variety at FLO ensures your body is not going to plateau and because you’re always making gains, you want to come back to the workout,” Eddie says. WHY IT’S HOT: Results without pain. A 15-year veteran of the Canadian Football League, Eddie values tough workouts that aren’t punishing. Mixing it up also keeps it fresh. “We are creatures of habit,” he says. “People will tend to do the exact same workout day in and day out, and it’s monotonous. Here at FLO, it’s never the same.” Get in the FLO at FloYogaCycle.com.
BOXING WHAT IT IS: Jabz is a 45-minute circuit-style workout designed specifically for women that incorporates boxing, cardio, strength training and core work that is both fun and effective. “Boxing training is guaranteed to work up a good sweat, burn calories and get the heart pumping,” explains Kimberlee White, who owns Jabz Boxing Fitness for Women with business partner Len Hayko. “You will be using every muscle every day while performing a variety of different exercises and having fun!” WHY IT WORKS: Boxers are in the best shape of their lives, so why not train like a boxer? “We throw over 1,000 punches per class and burn anywhere from 600 to 1,000 calories in a single workout,” says White. A changing routine is also key, White says. “In order for your body to get stronger, it’s important that you constantly keep your body guessing.”

WHY IT'S HOT: It’s a kick-butt workout for truly every woman. All ages, sizes and
each other,” White says. “We take the intimidation out of boxing and
skill levels are pushed to their limits and have fun doing it. “Our clients

FEELING THE BURN (CON TI N U ED)
HIIT HIIT
WHAT IT IS: Short for High Intensity Interval Training, HIIT is pretty much any workout that alternates intense bursts of activity with brief periods of low-intensity or total rest. One example is Tabata, which Fit Society owner MJ Reavley describes as 20 seconds of all-out-max of any exercise—burpees, for example—followed by 10 seconds of rest. Repeat this eight times. “You can get results in four minutes just as much as you would in a 30-minute traditional exercise session,” Reavley says. WHY IT WORKS: The versatility with regard to time and type of exercise makes it easy to implement into other workouts like, for example, Fit Society’s Women's Only Bootcamp that utilizes kettle bells and intuitive movements. The high-intensity bursts and rests are ideal for fat burning. “One variable that dictates results more than any other is intensity—how hard and how fast you go,” Reavley says. WHY IT'S HOT: It’s one of the few workouts used by elite
athletes,
workaholic
moms
and
stay-at-home dads who haven’t hit the gym in years. “Both a beginner and super advanced exerciser can benefit and enjoy HIIT training,” Reavley says. Challenge yourself at FitSocietyAZ.com.

BUNGEE THE BUNGEE WORKOUT WHAT IT IS: A range of different exercises are done while harnessed to a bungee cord suspended from the ceiling that constantly tries to pull you upward. Your job is to keep it—and your body—nice and low, explains Amanda Paige, owner of Tough Lotus. A professional dancer, Paige received her master training and certification in Thailand, where the workout originated, and is the only instructor in the U.S. licensed to train those wanting to get certified. “You can’t compare it to anything. A squat doesn’t feel like squat. A lunge doesn’t feel like a lunge,” Paige says. WHY IT WORKS: The resistance inflicted by the cord means your core and quads get pushed to their limits in addition to generating a grueling cardio workout. So, you’re guaranteed to feel the impact after a 75-minute class. WHY IT'S HOT: The high-intensity cardio with low impact on the joints is a winning combo. Its originality and creativity add to the appeal. Paige sends videos to class participants so they can see exactly what they’ve done to make themselves incredibly sweaty and, sometimes, incredibly sore. “Everything you have in your head about exercise, you have to throw it out the door,” Paige says. Give it a try at ToughLotus.com.
“ You can’t com pare it to any thing. A squat doesn’t feel like squat. A lunge doesn’t feel like a lunge.”

Modern Market’s menu is “incredibly clean,” Weir says, meaning it is free of additives, preservatives and “anything your grandma can't pronounce.” The winter seasonal menu was recently introduced and Weir says customers are loving the Salmon Curry Bowl, made with sustainable Atlantic salmon, braised kale, heirloom rice and yellow sweet potato curry. The Basil Chicken Sandwich and the Thai Coconut Salad are also big hits. “We are out to prove that nutritious food can be delicious, with a holistic view of healthy eating based on clean, wholesome, high-quality ingredients,” Weir says. 4901 E. NUTRITIONAL NOURISHMENT
(CON TI N U ED)
POMEGRANATE CAFÉ Pomegranate Café is an organic, vegan and vegetarian “crafted with love” café that features locally sourced ingredients. “We make wholesome, delicious food and drinks using nutrient-rich ingredients,” says co-owner Cassie Tolman. Everything is made from scratch, from the lattes steamed with handcrafted syrups to earthy breads, tasty bowls, vibrant salads and fresh juices. “Many other restaurants use the word ‘organic’ on the menu and just sprinkle a few organic ingredients into their dishes. At Pomegranate, over 98-percent of our ingredients are organic,” Tolman says. Customer faves include the RAW Gila Monster Nachos, RAW Tacos Vivos and Grilled Cheese Napoleon Sandwich, as well as the weekend brunch with the Country Biscuits and Gravy Skillet and gluten-free pancakes. “Revitalizing food and pure flavors are at the heart of what we do,” she says. 4025 E. Other healthy menu choices include salads made with leafy greens and house-made dressings. “Our menu options keep in mind health-conscious diners who want options that fit their lifestyle, without compromising taste,” says Director of Operations, Lydia Moore. “If you wish to eat like a flexitarian, you would have no problem making menu selections that would be vegan on one day, then a vegetarian and then a carnivore on the next.” 6140 W. have a scalpel in their hands,” says Dr. Abood. When a client first begins, they stand on a scale that measures weight, body mass index (BMI), visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mass and even metabolic age. Other body sensors are used to determine areas of deficiency—for example, being low in certain vitamins and minerals. They also use technology that can tell which foods are best to ingest for the client’s body. After the assessment, a coach or doctor sits down with the client and goes over the results. The client leaves with an individualized nutrition plan and a food journal to document their eating habits. There is a daily check-in to help stay accountable and an office visit once a week to take measurements. Clients also have 24/7 phone access to the doctor and staff. For instance, if they’re grocery shopping and wonder if “x” or “y” bread or yogurt is a healthy choice, they can call a staff member or doctor and receive guidance. Once the program period has ended, clients continue to come in once a month to have measurements taken and make any adjustments to their lifestyle, if needed. “People say they are no longer on their CPAP machines for sleep, they don’t hide from having their photos taken, they can now play with their children or grandchildren, they’re off their blood pressure or diabetes medicine,” says Dr. Abood. “These are the things we see every day and I love it!”
