Dog Days of Summer

veryone loves kids and pets, right? I'm sure most of you have either one or both in your home. As for my family, we have two tiny humans and one adorably curmudgeonly schnoodle in our household. Baxter is 13 years old but our young, highly energetic daughters sure know how to keep him on his toes! Our children and "fur-ever" friends are what completes our homes, so we decided to devote our entire issue to them.

Inside, you'll read stories that run the gamut. We're featuring a new cooking school that's offering kids' cooking classes and parties. We're highlighting AZ Goat Yoga, a super trendy workout that's all the rage right now. We're honoring two local teens who are fighting global injustices by doing their part to help make the world a better place. The Chandler Compadres held an event to distribute over $800,000 in funds to local nonprofit organizations. The Compadres were established in 1980 with the sole mission of providing support for East Valley families in need. Me e t e r ick. Ma v Maverick is a 10 year old German Shepherd who was rescued by David and Ginnie Rowe when he was a very strong-willed 8 month old puppy - hence the name! Living in AZ with a thick fur coat is no fun, so he loves going on adventures with his parents to cooler climates and swimming in the pool! Maverick has been a patient of Dr. Stickland for three years, who helps him with allergies and arthritis issues.

A 12-year-old newly placed foster child received her very first birthday celebration thanks to Arizona Helping Hands, a nonprofit organization providing assistance to foster families in the Valley. As You Wish Chandler donated the facility, NYPD Pizza donated the food and Piece of Cake Desserts created a custom cake. GATHER ‘ROUND THE KITCHEN TABLE MIX COOKING SCHOOL OFFERS A CREATIVE CULINARY EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AGES

arcy Makoviecki combined her passion for food and community to create Mix Cooking School. Foodies of all ages can come together to learn new skills and great recipes and then enjoy a dining experience at the end of class. “I live in Chandler, just minutes from Mix, and I love the community feeling we have in this town. It has a big-city vibe with a small-town heart,” says Makoviecki. “And to top it off, it's a family-oriented town. As a parent, I think it's a great life skill to have our kids learn the basics of good ingredients, nutrition and cooking.” Mix will provide a wide variety of classes and workshops, but Makoviecki, who has more than 15 years of experience in the food industry, is particularly excited about the family friendly options. Kids can partake in a basic cooking boot camp, weekend cooking classes or celebrate birthdays with a private cooking party. “I love the great sense of accomplishment kids feel when they successfully crack an egg and can eventually make a whole meal themselves. Kids don't have the fear of failure that adults have— they just dive in and get cooking,” says Makoviecki. Mix will also offer baby food making classes, date-night classes, and cake and cookie decorating classes. Makoviecki, whose passion and expertise is in baking, will offer workshops on how to make French macarons, scones and breads. “Mix provides a place for people to come together and enjoy a fun, collaborative, educational food experience,” says Makoviecki.

FRESH SPRING ROLLS Spring rolls are easy for kids to assemble and require virtually no cooking by using pre-cooked shrimp. It’s easy to substitute store-bought chicken, cooked pork or even tofu for the shrimp. Use whatever’s on-hand. Ingredients: - 8 large rice paper circles, found in the Asian section at the grocer - 4 oz. of softened rice noodles - 1 pound cold cooked shrimp - Fresh cilantro leaves - Fresh Thai basil - 2 carrots sliced into strips - Lettuce leaves Soften the rice noodles for 10 minutes in very hot water until tender, then drain. Take each rice paper circle and dip into a large bowl of hot water for a few seconds until soft and pliable. Place the softened circle flat onto a large plate. Arrange the cold shrimp in a line directly down the middle of the rice circle and follow with rows of carrot strips, basil and cilantro leaves. Top with a handful of softened rice noodles, leaving an inch edge uncovered around the entire circle. Fold the sides of the circle over the shrimp and veggies, and then fold from the bottom to top to create a sealed roll. The rice circle will neatly adhere to itself, forming a pretty, see-through roll. Arrange them on a serving tray with a favorite dipping sauce, such as hot or sweet chili sauce or spicy peanut sauce.

JERKY TREATS FOR DOGS (AND HUMANS!) Most dogs love jerky but much of the storebought jerky is around $20 a pound and often treated with chemicals, flavorings and preservatives. Making your own jerky is super simple and inexpensive. It’s delicious for both dogs and humans when using quality fresh chicken. Freeze one pound of boneless chicken thighs or boneless breasts for 30-40 minutes until just firm. Using a sharp knife, slice the chicken into three-inch pieces, each about ¼-inch thick. Place the slices on parchment paper-lined cookie sheets. Bake at 225 degrees for two to three hours or until chicken is dry and firm. Store for up to two weeks in an airtight container in the fridge, or freeze for months.

For Cloud Covered Streets, Help Humanity Today collected toiletries, socks and other necessities that went into baskets that were delivered to the homeless. This project is Riya’s favorite. She enthusiastically talks about delivering some of the items herself. “Just seeing these people in our own city so excited and so appreciative, you realize they are regular people who are just in a bad situation. It was a very important experience for me,” says Riya, 18. A drive that raised 1,500 books for UMOM New Day Centers, the state’s largest shelter dedicated to assisting homeless families, a couple of years ago is one that remains strong in Eshan’s heart to this day. Like all of their projects, this was done primarily through Facebook, informing donors of various dropoff locations throughout the Valley. “When we were getting all of these books, dropping them off and seeing them displayed on shelves, it was a really cool moment where we could see the difference we could make,” says Eshan. pril Gould and Sarah Williams have changed thousands of lives. They’re told that constantly, and they feel it. In 2016, they made the off beat decision to meld Gould’s love of animals and Williams’ yoga talent into AZ Goat Yoga, a program they say encourages positivity, fun and healing. “People always tell us that it’s the best day of their lives,” says the ever-enthusiastic Gould. “They’ve come from all over the U.S. If they’re sad or depressed, it just makes them so happy. Strazz works with 9- to- 12-year-olds attending the league’s summer camps at its main Phoenix location. Sometimes, their day includes reading to dogs. Some dogs, she noticed, appear to be listening and riveted. One dog was lulled to sleep. However, there was one pooch that got some extra attention from his reader. “He was hearing impaired, so one of the kids was showing him the pictures in the book. It was melting my heart a bit,” says Strazz, who graduated this spring from Perry High School.

ecoming a veterinarian was not the obvious choice for Dr. Andrea Strickland. “I’m not a typical vet,” she says. “I actually wanted to study human medicine.” But she grew up with dozens of pets (“My mom kind of collected them”) and was good at handling and bathing and taking care of them. Fast forward to college and she found herself working at an animal clinic as an assistant vet tech. “I did that for four years and really got to know the vets and the families, so I changed my mind at the very last minute,” she says. Looking back, her decision to go from human to animal medicine made complete sense.

“I love dealing with people and their pets, but I also love studying medicine,” Strickland says. She opened Animal Medical Center of Chandler in 2014 with a goal of providing pets and their owners a more intimate setting—a place where they can get educated about their companions in a comfortable environment. “We provide wonderful education and customer service in a relaxed and friendly environment so people don’t feel like there is a bad or stupid question to ask,” says Strickland. “We use current technology and stay up-to-date on the latest research … anything to help in any way.” One unique service the center provides is animal acupuncture. Combined with laser therapy, these services have been used on several pets to help manage pain. “Our biggest goal is pain control. There’s a good time for medicine and other times it’s not so great for the bodies so we wanted to provide other options,” Strickland says. “We did a lot of research and saw amazing results on the human side, so we took it on. We are into pain management and physical therapy for animals. They don’t talk. All you can do is read their body language.” The center offers acupuncture, laser therapy and physical therapy for all kinds of animals, even guinea pigs and horses. One dog, Cassie, has been receiving acupuncture and laser therapy for her arthritis since January 2017. As a puppy, the black Labrador/golden retriever mix was abused and left outside in the hot Nevada heat, says her owner Diane Kottke, who rescued her. Kottke drives from her West Chandler home to the clinic once a week for Cassie’s treatments. “Acupuncture isn’t just an Eastern medicinal practice anymore,” says Dr. Carolyn Duregger, one of the clinic’s veterinarians who is also a certified pet acupuncturist. “There’s a cohort of vets looking at it from a neuron anatomical perspective.” Once a week, Duregger kneels down beside Cassie and gently inserts the needles into her thick black fur. To become certified in animal acupuncture, Duregger took 100 hours of continuing education and attended a five-day clinical in Colorado. After about 15 minutes, the needles come out and it’s on to laser therapy. Everyone in the room, including Cassie, wears safety glasses to protect their eyes from infrared lights during the procedure.

“It’s not painful,” says Duregger, “it feels like a warm soothing blow.” Kottke sits next to Cassie, her presence offering the dog some comfort and reassurance. “If I could come every day, I would,” Kottke says. “She loves it.” Prices vary but acupuncture is around $79 per session and laser therapy is around $40-$80. A combination package is available for around $100. Both services are accepted by most pet insurances as long as there are no pre-existing conditions.

t was time for Lisa LeComte to make a change from her stressful career in healthcare management to something that made her happy. One day, she turned to her fur buddy, Isis, and asked for advice. Isis said, “Arf!” Translation: “You like baking, you’re creative and you love me. Start a dog cookie company. You can keep me supplied and make other dogs happy, too.” Kidding aside, LeComte was an empty nester who was ready for a change. Earlier this year, she opened Snacky Dogs, an online Chandler-based business. She creates handmade, healthy and flavorful dog treats baked with human grade, dog-safe ingredients. She mails her snacks to dog lovers all over the world.

“My dog is the love of my life so it was a natural answer to make dog snacks,” says LeComte. “I volunteer with Arizona Border Collie Rescue and Isis was my foster that stayed. She's smart and weird, ball-obsessed and crazy. And we're crazy about her.” Before opening Snacky Dogs, LeComte did research on the legalities, stalked the competition and came up with a business plan. She then spent the next month deciding on a name. She worked on recipes, made a website and started making snacks. “I liked buying specialty treats for my dog, but I didn’t like going shopping for them. I also worried about freshness and the quality of the ingredients. How long has that pretty cookie been sitting there? I try to avoid processed food, which is loaded with preservatives,” says LeComte. Her business offers a monthly subscription, but there are some separate limited-edition snacks available on her website. She also accepts special orders; for example, she’s made sheep cookies for a herding clinic. “I'm passionate about customer service. My customer’s happiness with my product and service is important to me,” she says. The subscription box has a different theme every month. In July, LeComte went with a picnic theme so the pack contained big tennis ball cookies, tiny watermelon cookies, ice pop mixes and barbecue pork chop cookies. “It allows me to be creative. started working with dogs from an early age, teaching basic behaviors and tricks. It wasn’t until I started volunteering with a local foundation that I got into more serious training. I was asked to work with dogs that had various behaviors that made them unadoptable. But the one thing that remained consistent in my approach was that I was always force free. Force-free training is a method that seeks to do no harm, either physical or emotional. It is a hands-free technique. No fear, no pain and no intimidation is the mantra for anyone seeking to train their dog this way. It’s a reward-based approach that focuses on creating a partnership based on trust and mutual respect between human and canine. Forcefree training builds strong bonds while teaching dogs how to navigate in this crazy human world. To be successful it takes time, patience, consistency and love. When I first started working with dogs, I knew that to be successful I needed the dog to trust me. I needed the dog to want to be with me and to want to learn. I understood that to get

and good behavior. We all need motivation—and what better thing is there for a dog, than chicken? The first dog I was asked to help was a chow/schnauzer mix named Carter. He was difficult for the farm hands to handle and he was unadoptable due to his antisocial behaviors. I knew that in order to help Carter I needed him to trust me. I started with dog-led walks and car rides with French fries. No training. Just a getting-toknow-you period of fun. We then moved onto basic behaviors that I captured first, and then named. For example, when he sat, I said “sit” and rewarded him with a piece of chicken. After a while, he learned what sit meant after naturally doing the behavior, hearing the word and being rewarded. We moved onto harder behaviors such as wait, stay, down, leave it and back up. All behaviors that the farm hands needed him to understand so they could better handle him in his dog run. Behaviors that ultimately would help him be happier in the human-controlled world that he was living in. Carter and I spent a few hours together every day. We became friends. After a month, the farm hands began to notice a difference in him. They said it was easier to get him out of his dog run, to feed and clean up after him. He was no longer lunging, growling and trying to bite. He learned what was expected of him. He was hap-

pier, too. Carter knew that people weren’t there to mistreat him. They were there to help him. About a month after his training success my family decided that he needed to be ours—because we would all miss him if he were to be adopted by anyone else. He had truly become the best dog ever!
