It happens whenever they see a dog at the park, or if we’re riding in the car, and especially when we stop in the pet store. And no matter how many times I tell them no, what they don’t know is that I want one, too.

You see, it’s been almost two years since we lost our dog, Max. Two years without a friendly welcome every time we walked through the door. Two years without experiencing the loyalty of a pet and the sense of protection that comes when there's a dog in the home. However, it’s also been two years of not having to buy dog food, pay veterinarian bills, or pick up poop. We can leave on a dime and not worry about how long we’re gone. But there’s still something missing. A void only a pet can fill: unconditional love. This issue is a great read for both pet owners and those without pets. We feature the heartwarming and healing benefits of pet therapy at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center. Volunteers and their dogs are making a huge difference in the care of patients by bringing smiles and cheer to hospital rooms. The comfort of a pet, in this case, is truly remarkable. Our friends over at Animal Medical Center of Chandler provide great tips when caring for a senior pet. From wellness exams, early disease detection and nutritional needs, the experienced team of veterinarians can help you provide your pet the best quality of life. If you’re looking for a restaurant to take your furry friend, you’ll be happy to learn about two great options: BLD and Social Box Neighborhood Eatery. Featuring cool patios with water bowls, drive-thru options and even special doggy dishes, these local establishments are creating a great dining experience for both pets and their owners. As I continue doing research to help determine the best dog for our family, I’ve talked to local shelters, rescue agencies and breeders. I think I’m close to narrowing down our selection. I’m hoping to bring home a fluffy, adorable puppy in time for Christmas. A gift that will bring happiness and joy for years to come. I can’t wait!

Residents Support Chandler Police Officers

Chandler residents came together on July 20 to provide support and give thanks to the Chandler Police Department. More than 40 people brought signs and smiles and cheered as the officers received a standing ovation. The event was organized by the Facebook group Living Chandler.

Operation Back To School Chandler a Huge Success

More than 3,000 families received free backpacks filled with donated school supplies, plus new shoes, socks, underwear and uniforms at Operation Back To School Chandler on July 23. Local agencies also provided services such as haircuts and dental screenings, along with other resources on fire and water safety.

ABOUT CARE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF SERVICE About Care is celebrating 10 years of service by throwing a 10th Anniversary Celebration on Sept. 15 at the Seville Country Club. The theme of the party is 80’s Homecoming and will include food, beverages, dancing, a live band, and a photo booth. About Care’s mission is to “deliver caring, compassionate support services using trained volunteers with special concern for the elderly and disabled homebound residents of Chandler and Gilbert.” The company provides Chandler and Gilbert’s elderly and disabled residents services to help them remain in their homes, which reduces expenses associated with long-term care. SOCIAL BOX NEIGHBORHOOD EATERY The well-known Iguana Mack’s on Alma School Road received a facelift and name change last October, becoming Social Box Neighborhood Eatery. Owner, Matt Landkamer, wanted to bring a kid and pet friendly restaurant concept to the area. He also wanted to focus on giving back to charities each month. In less than a year, Social Box has held several pet charity events. Last December, the restaurant hosted a Santa Paws event to raise money and donations for a local no-kill shelter. There was an animal angel tree for 16

customers to bring in donations of dog food, treats and blankets. Pet parents could also bring their pups in for a photo with Santa. Most recently, Social Box hosted a “Pints for Paws” event where diners could purchase a pint glass and create their own design with proceeds going to a local no-kill animal shelter. Year round, Social Box also donates a portion of the proceeds from the Chateau La Paws Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc bottles of wine that are purchased. A large patio can fit 80 people and pets. While you nosh, your pup can enjoy a doggy dish of water on the mister filled patio. If it’s feeding time, Social Box has created a dog-gone worthy menu item for your best canine friend; a house made lunch of brown rice, carrots and chicken served in a dog dish for only $4. Later this fall, Social Box will be starting a “Yuppy Hour” as well, for guests to come enjoy beverage specials with Fido on the patio.

Not only does this Chandler restaurant have a great atmosphere, but it has become known for their wood fired pizzas. The White Pizza - a customer favorite - is topped with olive oil, fresh mozzarella, asiago, provolone, fontina, mozzarella, parmesan, prosciutto, and balsamic glaze. There are plenty of options for any diner, including the kids; from the signature Cheeseburger to Spicy Mac and Cheese or a “Bowl O’ Greens.” If you’re thirsty, try the SoBo Bloody Mary topped with a buttery grilled cheese sandwich. Social Box has also created a Mule Menu with five different flavors to cool you off. Even the kiddos can enjoy a mocktail with a mini peach-tini and cran apple cider. The restaurant also offers a brunch menu every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On the menu, items include a Morning Pizza consisting of country gravy, bacon, scrambled eggs, bell pepper and cheddar and the SoBo Breakfast Burrito with scrambled eggs, jack n’ cheddar, green chili and hash wrapped in a flour tortilla with fresh pico. Dogs working in the K-9 unit with officers provide protection and much needed service to us all.

The most common dog used by the K-9 unit is the Belgian Malinois. This breed, which is smaller than other breeds used in law enforcement, is highly athletic, less likely to develop health issues, and very adaptable to different environments. These canines come from Holland and are certified by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging, which for those of you who are not fluent in Dutch, is referred to by its acronym: KNPV. This translates to Royal Dutch Police Dog Association. These dogs are usually trained from the age of six and tested on their obedience. Once in Chandler, the dogs will either be introduced to explosive or narcotic odors. Each dog goes through 340 hours of training with its respective handler. A (POLICE) MAN'S BEST FRIEND

While the Tom Hanks film Turner and Hooch gives a perfectly awful vision of what officer and dog pairing looks like, the reality is that the relationship between a K-9 dog and his handler is a unique and special one, formed through hours of hard work and quality time together. Because the dog both works with and resides with its handler, the dog becomes a part of the handler's family. With this much time together, the two learn about each other, which increases their functionality as a K-9 team. 18

The service that these dogs provide for the community is unmatched. Their keen sense of smell, natural bravery, and intense loyalty allows them to detect dangerous items and protect residents from possible harm. These canines can locate offenders and protect officers who need to apprehend suspects. Sergeant Daniel Mejia with the Chandler Police Department explains, “The K-9 teams are very important to the police department since they provide assistance to other officers. The dogs are primarily used as a locating tool.” The dog's ability to locate items quickly with their strong sense of smell and impressive night vision decreases the time and resources that can be needed to search large areas for articles of evidence. Also, having dogs go into areas of greater risk protects the officers and the lives of the public. The dogs also play an important role in educating the public and bridging any gaps between the police and its community. “We use our dogs for demonstrations at schools, community events, scout troops and other public events," Mejia states. "They are great at bridging the gap between the community and the police department." BRONCO AND BERNER

One of these dynamic duos protecting the community is Officer Berner and Bronco. The two paired up back in 2015 when they were certified in patrol and narcotic detection. Together they respond to calls for service, such as possible burglaries in progress, as well as assistance in narcotics detection. Bronco is trained to detect four major narcotics: cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana. Together, they have located narcotics on traffic stops. very day at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center, teams of physicians, nurses, and other health specialists all work hard providing medical care for their patients. In addition to this dedicated group of medical professionals, there is another team that is devoted to helping patients feel better and heal faster—only this group walks on four legs instead of two. The PAWS Program at Dignity Health consists of 20 dog therapy teams who visit patients at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center. As Lori Mercer, senior coordinator for volunteer services at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center notes, the program started in 2006 with just four dogs and has since grown steadily over the years. “Today, it is the largest program of its kind in the East Valley,” Mercer says, adding that the PAWS Program also has 24 dog therapy teams at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. The 20 dog therapy teams at Chandler Regional Medical Center make an average of 215 visits a week, Mercer says. The dogs represent a wide variety of breeds and sizes, and include Golden Retrievers, a Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, German Shepherd, an Old English Sheepdog, Yorkie, Border Collie/ Lab mix, a Lhasa-poo, Cocker Spaniel, a Red Setter and several other mixed breeds.

“We also have two new teams starting soon and are always continuing to recruit,” Mercer says. To initiate a visit with a patient, Mercer says the PAWS twolegged volunteer knocks on the patient’s door and asks if the person would like a pet visit. “Then they’ll come in and spend time with the patient. Each team has their own set of ‘trading cards’ with a picture of the therapy dog, and information on the back about the pet’s breed, hobbies, handler’s name and birth date,” Mercer says. “While nursing and physician staff often request pet therapy visits, our patients are also able to ‘order’ a pet visit by using the Get Well Network, a service available from the television in their hospital room. If someone is not up for a visit or not comfortable around dogs, they are free to pass on the visit.” MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Barb Farmer, manager of volunteer services for Dignity Health’s Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers, says seeing first-hand how much of a positive impact a visit from a dog can have on patients inspired her to help bring the program to the hospitals. “When I first rounded with a pet therapy team and personally witnessed what an impact a dog could have for patients and staff, that’s when I knew the program needed to grow,” she says.

“When I first started managing the program, we had a Polaroid camera and would take photos of patients with their pet visitor. You could see how they would hold the photo so dearly and they shared that when they would have to take a test, or if they were lonely they could refer to their photo for comfort. The smiles on their faces were precious.” Farmer was so encouraged by what she saw, she was inspired to bring some of the same canine kindness to patients by volunteering with her own dog, ScooterPie. SELFLESS VOLUNTEERS

Carolyn Craig is one of the volunteers in the PAWS Program. She and her poodle mix Beau, started visiting patients at Chandler Regional Medical Center in October, 2015. Craig says she had planned to start volunteering with the program after she retired. “I am a dog lover and felt it would be a way to work with my dog and give back to the community at the same time,” she says. “I felt Beau had the right disposition to be a therapy dog and my veterinarian encouraged me to have him tested. He passed with high marks.” Having the opportunity to interact with the patients, staff and visitors is a highlight of the pair’s time at the hospital, Craig says.

“Sometimes the families need a visit from the dogs as much as the patients, especially if they are waiting for a loved one to come out of surgery or treatment,” she says. “The staff frequently asks to pet Beau as well and it gives them a little break from a rough day.” Craig says she is heartened by the tangible way a visit from Beau will brighten the spirits of patients of all ages. “Beau and I recently visited with a teenage boy who was spending his birthday in the emergency room. I think the visit from Beau really brightened his day,” she says. “I enjoy the older patients who don’t have many visitors. They so enjoy having someone to chat with as much as they enjoy a visit with the therapy dogs.” Craig says she is definitely not alone in enjoying her time as a member of the PAWS Program. Beau also clearly loves it too. “I know Beau enjoys his time at the hospital. Caring PET for your senior

f you have an aging pet, there are some things you should be aware of in order to ensure good overall health. Our friends over at Animal Medical Center of Chandler, including new veterinarian Dr. Gabriela Durig, provided some helpful tips when caring for your senior pet: • Did you know your pet enters their senior years at age 7? Routine wellness exams become even more important as your pet enters their senior years. These exams should be performed every 6 months to allow your veterinarian to identify potential health issues earlier. • Early disease detection is key for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, endocrine disease and cancer, which can go unnoticed in the early stages. This is why preventive care is extremely important in all pets, especially senior pets. • It is important to note changes in your pet. Let your veterinarian know if you’ve noticed changes in your pet’s weight, appetite, elimination, skin and coat, mobility or behavior. These changes could be early signs of illness or disease. • Dietary requirements change as your pet ages. Some senior pets become less active as they age, reducing their calorie requirements. Others may need additional calories if they have difficulty holding

their weight. It is important to perform a nutritional assessment to ensure your pet is meeting their nutritional requirements. Specially formulated diets for senior pets are available, as well as prescription diets for specific health conditions. • Modifications can be made to your pet’s living arrangements to improve their quality of life as they age. For cats, lowering a side of their litter box or modifying an existing box will allow them easier access to move in and out of the box. Providing orthopedic beds and blankets will have your canines with mobility issues or arthritis rest easier and soothe aching joints. Raising food bowls allows your pet to eat and drink without having to lower their head, which can irritate arthritis or muscle pain in senior pets. n a peaceful acre of land, surrounded by a cow, three goats, two pigs, eight chickens, three turkeys, two ducks and 11 cats, Michelle Lukasiewicz has created a life that many animal lovers dream about. “From a very young age I always felt compassion for animals,” says Lukasiewicz. Five years ago, Lukasiewicz redesigned her typical suburban life. She purchased a property and created a sanctuary for abused, abandoned or neglected animals so that they could live out their lives with companionship and peace. “Animals can’t speak for themselves,” she says. “They need us to be their voice. Some humans take horrendous advantage of the fact that they’re powerless and we do whatever we want to them.” To fight back against animal cruelty, Lukasiewicz spends nearly all of her free time giving back to animal advocacy organizations.

As a mentor for Animal Defense League of Arizona, Lukasiewicz trains fellow community members on how to safely catch feral cats living in their communities so they can be spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Lukasiewicz also fosters for Rescuing Animals in Need, which enables her to be a temporary home for kittens that need extra care until they can be adopted. Not only does Lukasiewicz provide direct care to animals, she is involved in legislative efforts to improve their lives. As a Humane Society of the United States district leader for the fifth congressional district, which covers parts of Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert and Queen Creek, Lukasiewicz encourages others in her district to meet with legislators and urge them to support animal-friendly legislation. “It’s so easy. They’re really nice and the representatives and senators want to hear from their constituents,” Lukasiewicz says. In addition to her full-time job as a tax manager, Lukasiewicz is treasurer for Humane Voters of Arizona. Each year they assemble a humane scorecard for all Arizona legislators that tracks their voting record on animal-related legislation. Her greatest passion is helping people make the connection between animals suffering on factory farms and the food on their plates. She loves introducing visitors to Rosie, the cow, who often snuggles with Zeus, the pig. There’s also Snowy, a goat that goes for walks on a leash, and Alfonso, the turkey, who greets visitors with his macho display of feathers. “They’re no different than our dogs or cats,” Lukasiewicz says. “They want freedom, love and to feel like they belong.” It’s clear that Arizona’s animals are lucky to have Lukasiewicz on their side. She is a great example of how one person can make a difference. “If you can give back, you should. It makes you feel good and it’s our duty,” Lukasiewicz says.

have always had a deep passion for animals. Hearing stories of animal abuse leaves me heartbroken. I feel a strong sense to protect and stand up for animals. That passion led me to begin volunteering at a local animal shelter in Mesa and eventually open up my home to foster dogs. A few of these foster dogs have become my forever family. I have been fostering for a few years but with four of my own, it can become a bit overwhelming to take in another dog. My long work hours as a realtor keeps me from doing as much as I would like, so I now donate a portion of my realtor commissions to One Dog AZ, a local Chandler rescue group. It helps me feel like I can help with medical bills and assist the rescue in further finding forever homes for these dogs in need. Fostering can also be heartbreaking. Often a dog comes into my home that is broken - neglected, abused or abandoned. My family and I give extra love to these dogs. After weeks or months, the right adoptive family comes along and while I am happy and relieved, I am left with a hole in my heart. Fostering isn't for the weak of heart but it is so needed. Some of the dogs I have fostered in the past have never known the touch of a human hand. To see these dogs after they have been adopted is truly priceless.
