think it’s safe to say that I inherited my passion for volunteering from my mother. A teacher, and one of the strongest, kindest and most compassionate hearts that I knew, my mother always made it a point to get involved with the community in one way or another—from fundraising for the annual Pumpkin Festival and Christmas Drive to starting new after school clubs for her students and even becoming my Girl Scout leader, she always served selflessly. I remember those years as a Girl Scout visiting retirement homes and putting on plays for the residents, planting flowers and trees in parks and writing thank you notes to local service men. It was through activities like these that, even at a young age, I learned that the satisfaction you got from giving to others far outweighed the little time it took to show someone you cared. I took this spirit of service with me all the way throughout high school, where I became passionately involved in helping out at a small church-run preschool for children living in rough circumstances, coming to not only admire the children for their resilience, but the teachers as well for their unending kindness. Then it was off to college, where, at Pepperdine University, a very much service-oriented school, I spent three years working as a teacher’s aid in special needs and first through third grade classes for America Reads. Today, as editor of North Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Chandler Lifestyle Magazines, I have been incredibly blessed to have gotten to know and become involved with some of the many organizations around the Valley, such as St. Jude, JFCS and J3T, Childhelp, PANDA, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and many more. Although all these groups help very diverse causes, they all have one thing in common: the people behind them. I have seen first hand how just one person’s simple act of kindness can change someone’s day, week or even life; and when they all get together something truly amazing happens and lives all over are touched and hearts are healed. To all those caring hearts out there, keep doing what you are doing because you are truly making a difference. You are truly appreciated. Thank you.

hen I took this magazine on seven months ago, I had underestimated what a wonderful journey I was about to embark upon! One of the main reasons for me coming out of “retirement” was that our recent move from St. Louis to Chandler left me feeling unconnected with my own community. I missed meeting new people, learning about local businesses and discovering all the opportunities to give back locally. I was feeling totally detached and that just did not fit my personality! Here we are now, with this issue brining some exciting new changes for our readers. You are going to see a new look and feel, thanks to the addition of Danielle Accovelli, our new editor. Another thing you may have noticed is that we no longer have that shiny, slick cover—matte finishes are the latest trend in publishing, and we love it!

few years ago, Dan Hill’s then 11-year-old daughter, Lauren, decided that she wanted to play lacrosse. Although Hill was happy to let her play, he was not particularly fond of making the long drive to Scottsdale for practices and games. However, at the time, Hill notes, Scottsdale was pretty much the only place in the Valley that offered girls the opportunity to play lacrosse. In order to provide Lauren and other girls with the chance to play the game—and to save him the frequent drives to Scottsdale—Hill was inspired to co-found the East Valley Girls Lacrosse (EVGL) league, which serves Chandler, Ahwatukee, Tempe and Gilbert. “We started EVGL two years ago with nine youth players, and this season we have about 60 girls signed up with another 40 at the high school level,” says Hill. “The recreational team plays in the fall and the spring, and we also have a competitive travel team that attends tournaments in California and New Mexico.”

In addition to leagues for the older girls, Hill has given even younger girls (kindergarten through eighth grade) the opportunity to experience the fun of playing lacrosse, having recently helped launch the Arizona Girls Youth Lacrosse league (AGYL), which just started its first season, and currently serves as President. “There’s not really a whole lot of field sports available to girls, and we’re pretty proud to bring this opportunity to the community here in the Phoenix Metro area,” says Hill. “Lacrosse is a lot of fun and it combines the best parts of a lot of different sports.” In addition to being an incredibly fun game, Hill says there are also plenty of benefits to playing lacrosse as a young child—some of which extend into the young adult years. “Kids benefit from the exercise of playing a field sport, the friendships of teammates and for some, the opportunities to play at higher levels—for example, ASU is starting a Division 1 program,” he says. n honor of Veteran’s Day this month, we are proud to present a glimpse of Lew Bradley’s experience while serving during the Korean War.

WHAT LED YOU TO ENLIST IN THE MARINE CORPS?

I enlisted in the Marine Corps on my 17th birthday because my father had kicked me out three months prior. After leaving home, I stayed with a high school friend whose older brother had a restaurant that served lunch to employees from the Fisher Body plant. I had been helping his brother for several months in the restaurant during the day, and he would allow me to stay in the back room and use his home for cleaning up. The brother was a WWII Marine and I was so impressed with his stories, as well as the movie Sands of Iwo Jjima, that I enlisted. WHAT AREAS OF SERVICE WERE YOU IN AND WHAT WAS YOUR HIGHEST RANKING?

My highest rank was Sergeant, and I served a total of four years. I was in the National Defense Service, Korean Service with three star, United Nations Service and the ROK War Service. WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR PROUDEST MOMENTS WHILE SERVING YOUR COUNTRY?

My proudest moment was at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island rifle range. We had just completed training for the day and faced the U.S. flag to salute. The sun was directly behind the flag and all the white stripes and stars seemed to be silver, which filled me with pride.

WOULD YOU SHARE SOME OF YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE SERVING DURING WAR TIME?

All Marines know that they are part of the greatest fighting force on Earth. We all know that we are brothers and will never leave a Marine behind during battle; we take our dead and wounded with us. Our motto Semper Filelis (Always Faithful) is always in our mind. Honor, courage, commitment is our personality. WHAT DID YOU BRING BACK FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE SERVING THE COUNTRY?

I had a very high mechanical ability due to taking auto mechanics in high school. Although being classified as a radioman, I spent most of my working day with our aircraft mechanics and learned much about aircraft engines. While in Korea, my unit lost their Air-Sea Rescue helicopter mechanic. I volunteered to be his replacement and was accepted. Subsequently, I maintained the helicopter and flew with it on all pilot recoveries. After I was discharged, I found employment with Garrett AiResearch, where I started in the assembly of auxiliary power units, then Quality Control and Field Service. I then spent 28 years on an overseas assignment in the Far East and Southeast Asia for operators of Garrett-powered aircrafts, which included the 42 turbo-prop aircraft with Air America, the famous "Ghost Airline."

Files launched the Network’s flagship site, Scottsdale Moms Blog, with a good friend back in 2010 with the goal of creating a platform that would help connect local moms with each other through helpful, relevant content that would resonate with their daily lives. “I feel like motherhood is such a time that so many women feel insecure and helpless,” says Files. “So our goal for the network has always been to be mindful of how we are connecting moms.” A year into Scottsdale Moms Blog, Files saw the need to connect moms on both a local and national level, so she launched City Moms Blog Network, bringing on their first sister site, Dallas, in 2011, and it has been nothing short of immensely enjoyable and fulfilling since. “We now currently have 64 sites throughout the nation, and serve about two to four million readers across the U.S. on a monthly basis,” says Files. “We just really love doing what we do in terms of connecting moms locally and nationally, and empowering women to become strong, confident entrepreneurs.” However, in 2015, Files felt the strings of her heart being pulled in a new direction and began thinking about what more City Moms Blog Network could do to make an impact worldwide. Then, as if by fate, Food for the Hungry approached the Network late last year about potentially partnering together. “I just couldn’t say no,” says Files. “One of the core values of City Moms Blog network is to inspire, and I felt like through our partnership with Food for the Hungry we would be able to inspire moms outside of their homes and communities to really do something to change the lives of those who have far less than us.” Next thing Files knew, she, along with three other City Moms Blog Network representatives, was on a plane to Guatemala to experience first-hand the work Food for the Hungry did in other countries. Upon their arrival, the women made a stop at the Food for the Hungry Guatemala office, where Files heard the director say something that changed her whole perspective of the the trip. “As we were about to leave, the director looked at us and said ‘I would encourage you all to not look at the needs and feel compassion, but rather to see the beauty in it; that God created them to be exactly where they are, and that is beautiful,’” she recalls. And beautiful it was. While traversing through the villages, Files saw first-hand how a mother’s love for her child transcended all economic, social and cultural boundaries, and how truly connected all mothers were despite their drastically different lifestyles. “Oftentimes we only think about the differences between us, but really, in this journey of motherhood there is just so much more in it that is similar and beautiful, and that was the biggest takeaway for me.” BRINGING IT BACK HOME: EAST VALLEY MOMS BLOG

Although only Files and three other representatives went to Guatemala, the mission of Food for the Hungry, and their efforts with the child sponsorship program, touched the hearts of City Moms Blog members across the country. This included East Valley Moms Blog co-owners Lisa Glowacka and Michelle Alexander, who, along with City Moms Blog, are working to help sponsor 300 of the children in Guatemala. “We wanted to get people a little more aware of what Food for the Hungry did, so what we did here in the East Valley to support their mission was a private screening of the movie Bad Moms, where 30-percent of the sales went to the organization,” says Glowacka. “I think the biggest way that we empower women is by connecting them; whether it is a mom who works out of the home, a full-time working mom looking for an outside network, or a stay at home mom looking to connect with other moms who are having similar experiences,” adds Alexander. That is what is truly at the heart of both City Moms Blog and Food for the Hungry: enriching the lives of moms and children locally, nationally and internationally; proving that a mother’s love knows no boundaries. Melinda and Paul Gunther are the co-founders of Live Love, a “nonprofit organization working to establish long-term partnerships that build on the strengths and assets of neighborhoods in order to promote stronger caring communities.” A social worker and a pastor respectively, the couple was inspired by their time spent in Guatemala to work with communities and essentially “live love.” “When we moved to Chandler in 2006, I called the City and asked if anyone worked directly with neighborhoods,” Melinda Gunther explains. “We connected with Judy Ramos at the City of Chandler and she gave us an in-depth look at what work was being done. It’s only grown from there.” “The primary neighborhoods we have been working in so far include Pamela Park, Silk Stocking and Armstrong,” she says. “The neighborhood we are just moving in to now is Galveston.” In 2012, the group purchased a home within one of their target neighborhoods and restored it to working condition. It now serves as the Live Love hub. There, the nonprofit hosts community meetings, karate classes and other events. Once a month, they even host a community workday where neighbors help other neighbors with yard work, home repairs and more. Last month, the group had its first Fall Festival, too. Gunther adds that Live Love is also in the beginning stages of creating a neighborhood oasis with a plot of land that the group owns. “The oasis will be a community space,” she says. “It’s all about building a strong community.” “My heart is so full of joy when I get to watch people of all backgrounds and origins come together and work as one unit to improve our community,” says neighborhood leader and Live Love volunteer Ruth Maya. “This is what it’s like to be part of Live Love and I’m so thankful to be a part of that.”

Christina Atwood’s grassroots group of volunteers—connected together on Facebook through a group called Hope Anchors—is helping refugees make the transition to life in the U.S. “This past spring I had the opportunity to attend the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations,” Atwood explains. “… After listening to accounts of what was going on in the world… I found my focus shifting to a desire to do whatever a stay-at-home mother of three could do to make a difference.” Atwood then connected with Hayley Smith of Lifting Hands International and Arian Hatch of Goods For Good AZ, and together the ladies lead a variety of efforts aimed at helping refugees at home and abroad. Currently, she and other volunteers are focusing on apartment set ups for Valley resettlement agencies. “It has all been worth it in helping to settle more than two dozen families this past summer alone. Now we have had our first training with more than 50 people in attendance,” she says. “The goal is for others to start doing the set ups; we want these families to have friends, people who aren't paid to help them, to offer a genuine community welcome and, where possible, help them in learning to navigate this foreign place.” To help coordinate volunteers and donations, Atwood started the Hope Anchors Facebook group. “It is a closed group with all welcome who are willing to help refugees arriving in Arizona,” she explains. “It is non-political, non-negative forum that I started rather organically after posting to the Ocotillo Friends group on Facebook and had a huge response from people in Chandler.” “It has been truly miraculous to see how each person, regardless of how little they feel they can offer, truly makes a difference as they engage in making their community a more welcoming place.” For more information, please visit, Facebook Group: Hope Anchors or email AtwoodChristina@gmail.com.

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, Michael Pollack will flip the switch for more than a half-million twinkling lights at the Pollack Tempe Cinemas. Fifteen years ago, Pollack started this holiday light display outside Pollack Corporate Headquarters in Mesa with 100,000 lights. About seven years ago, it was moved to the entire Pollack Tempe Cinema Shopping Center, where the Cinema is located. Inspired by Disneyland’s Magical Display,

the mega display now boasts over 500,000 LED lights and 30 animatronics and f igurines. "We're big believers in energy efficiency," said Pollack. "LED is both cost-effective and draws less amps, increasing the brightness of our show but decreasing operating expenses and the wattage used." INS T RUC T IO NS Preheat oven to 375°F. Generously butter a muffin tin with 2 tablespoons butter. Place 4 tablespoons butter and olive oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. When melted, add bay leaf and vegetables in order listed; then add apples. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and seasoning. Cook 5-7 minutes, until beginning to soften; then add parsley, stuffing mix and 2 cups broth. Stir well to combine. If mixture is dry, add additional broth until moist but not wet. Remove bay leaf. Using an ice cream scoop, divide stuffing into muffin tins. Press firmly into tins, mounding tops. Sprinkle with paprika, as desired. Bake until set and tops are slightly crisp, about 10-12 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature.

3 tablespoons butter 1 cup yellow onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 4 cups fresh corn kernels (or thawed frozen) 2/3 cup reduced-fat milk 1 small package (4-ounce size) reduced-fat cream cheese (neufchâtel) 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded ¾ cup panko bread crumbs 1 tablespoon coarse salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 3 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped 3 eggs 1 tablespoon paprika

I N S TR U C T I O N S Preheat oven to 375°F. Place oven rack in middle position. Spray 9-inch pie plate with non-stick spray. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion to pan; sauté until lightly brown, about 4 minutes. Reduce heat to medium.; add garlic. Sauté until fragrant but not brown, about 2-3 minutes. Place onion mixture in medium bowl; add corn, milk, 1½ cup cheddar, cream cheese, ½ cup panko, salt, pepper and 2 tablespoons chives. Stir well; add eggs. Stir until well-combined. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter; placed in medium bowl. After slightly cooling, stir in ½ cup panko, ½ cup cheddar cheese, 1 tablespoon chives. Sprinkle topping over filling in pie pan. Place pie pan on cookie sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes, until slightly puffed and light brown. Cool 5-10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika.

handler’s Cuisine & Wine Bistro is all about family. The restaurant’s story dates back to 1988 when Mairead and Fabrice Buschtetz were both working at a hotel outside of Paris. He was in the kitchen. She was at the front desk. Soon, they both decided to leave the hotel and work at a restaurant owned by Fabrice’s family. And they’ve been in the business, and together, ever since. However, Fabrice—who has an affinity for classic cars and Harley-Davidsons—always felt like he was born on the wrong side of the Atlantic. So, the family packed up and moved from France to Arizona in 2013. Soon after arriving, they bought an auto repair shop. Then they opened the first Cuisine & Wine Bistro in Gilbert in 2013, followed by the one in Chandler this past August. Both the couple and their three children work at all three businesses. When searching for a second restaurant, Chef Fabrice knew he’d found the right spot after he saw the spacious kitchen. When he’s in his dream kitchen, Fabrice makes all the food from scratch; and is renowned for his sauces, escargot and Quiche Lorraine. “Fabrice has 30 years’ experience; you can see and taste all of that at a reasonable price,” Mairead says. The light-filled, romantic Chandler space comes complete with small, romantic touches like real flowers and candles. The staff is dressed in black and a stunning glass wine cellar has the words Bienvenue Chez Nous (French for Welcome to Our Home) written in chalk on the wall to remind guests that they’re coming into the family’s home. “I want you to feel welcome,” Mairead says. “We try to give you an experience that you will remember.”

ith the Holiday Season fast approaching many of us have a lot to be thankful for, particularly as Veteran's Day arrives. We must all be thankful for the sacrifices that our Armed Forces have made for our country, and for those who sacrificed and gave all. We also have to remember that behind every soldier, airman and sailor that there are family members who also have made sacrifices and deserve our thanks. My name is Paula J Selby, most call me PJ. I am a full-time Realtor® with United Brokers Group located here in Chandler, and serving the East Valley. Most people who know me know my passion is with the Veteran Community. I am honored to be a volunteer with the Arizona Army National Guard as a FRG Leader and an Alumni Blue Star Mother. As a Realtor, I am also a member of VAREP, which is an outreach 501C organization that helps educate veterans on the VA Loans process and nationwide, participates in donating a homes to veterans in need. Some of my other passions are helping once a month to make homemade meals for transitional veterans; getting furniture donated to the Veterans Furniture Warehouse, which gives items to help resettle Veterans in a place of their own; and to raise funds and food for the Veteran's Food Pantry with United for Change, a non-profit Veteran Organization. Yes, our Veteran Community needs this help on-going. I come from a military family, my father was a career military man and a Purple Heart Recipient. He served in the Army during the Korean War and also served in Vietnam. My father-in-law served a career in the Navy, my brother was a Marine and our two sons served in the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is important to me 42

personally, and as a Realtor®, to show great gratitude for those who have served. I love to assist Veterans in buying or selling their home with the VA process. Most not only don't understand their benefits, but don't realize they can use it more than once, if you had a Short Sale or Foreclosure you still may have remaining benefits to purchase another home and can do so under certain circumstances with a VA loan, if they currently have a VA loan. I have lived in the East Valley for over 25 years and have seen Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Queen Creek/San Tan Valley grow from fertile farm land to thriving communities. Williams Air Field is now Mesa Gateway, and serves the East Valley as it continues to grow. In addition, the Southeast Valley VA Medical Center recently re-established itself in a new location in Gilbert to serve our growing veteran population and our retired veteran population. As a Realtor®, I’ve had the blessing of being surrounded by amazing individuals who give their time, talents and finances to various organizations, both within and outside the real estate community, who, like me, give back to the community in many ways. I have been one of the first to obtain a MRP Certification from the National Association of Realtors (Military Relocation Specialist) so I can help our veterans in homeownership. I personally contribute to my heroes closing cost by giving them up to 25-percent of my commissions, and I cannot think of a better way to say thank you to our Veterans. If you know a veteran, or run into one at a store, a gas station, or in your place of worship, please stop and give them a simple thank you; those two words mean the world to them.
