s the new editor of Chandler Lifestyle, I am delighted to spend the upcoming months getting to know the community that I have come to love even better and to feature all the wonderful people, businesses and events our city holds. Since new beginnings are always a time for celebration, it is only fitting that our October issue highlight two special occasion staples: wine and beer. I’ve personally been lucky enough to experience the winemaking process first-hand while in Italy; and the experience was one that I will not soon forget. It was a crisp, chilly mid-September morning; the sun was just peeking out over the hills, casting a golden glow over the whole city. I looked out the window to see fields of bright sunflowers, farms with grazing cattle and old brick houses with ashy smoke rising out from the chimneys as we made our way from the city center onto a quiet dirt road in the countryside. With the sun now fully risen in the sky, I beheld a wondrous sight before me as we stopped: row upon row of lush green vines dotted with plump purple grapes as far as the eye could see. Once on the vineyard, we were greeted by a husband, wife and their three children, who soon informed us that we would be spending our day picking grapes for the harvest. I was handed an old, dirt-laden bucket and directed to the part of the vineyard where I would be working. Four hours later, my jeans were soaked knee deep with thick mud, my shirt had splotches of purple all over and my hands had turned a greenish-brown color—I had never felt so exhausted yet so accomplished. After devouring a sizeable meal, we helped clean before relaxing under the shade of the trees while the kids taught the boys from our group how to really play soccer. As the sun began to set and we prepared to leave, I looked at my hands: they were calloused and a little scarred, and there was still dirt under my fingernails, but I had spent the day reconnecting with the land and had gained a true appreciation for it.

owntown Chandler is experiencing a bit of a restaurant renaissance. Two of its newest members: La Bocca Urban Kitchen + Wine Bar and Modern Margarita both arrived on the scene in August. While La Bocca slings wood-fired pizzas and has a strong wine program, Modern Margarita dishes out fresh, inventive tacos and features a bar that focuses heavily on tequila-based drinks. Both owned by Mill Avenue Management Group, the concepts share the same kitchen and talented culinary team, yet the atmosphere in each is decidedly distinct.

This eclectic concept has a more laid-back vibe, complete with bright green walls accented with creatively-designed wallpaper, a D.J. booth for late-night tunes, and an expansive bar surrounded by flat panel TVs where patrons can watch sports. The Downtown hotspot caters to the late-night crowd and is open as late as 2 a.m., offering a fun, festive atmosphere for enjoying tasty food, expertly crafted drinks and good times with friends. Modern Margarita’s menu is largely dominated by a mouthwatering selection of savory tacos, but also includes other Mexican staples like spicy salsa, fresh guacamole and creamy queso. Highlights include the pork tacos and a “taco flight,” where guests can enjoy 15 tacos delivered in grand fashion to their table on a long metal tray. Tequila is the mainstay of the drink menu. Guests can order premium blanco, reposado, and anejo varieties. Their namesake drink, Modern Margarita, is a mix of Herradura Blanco tequila, Aperol, fresh grapefruit juice and simple syrup. L A BOCCA URBAN KITCHEN + WINE BAR

Right around the corner is La Bocca, a romantic spot that offers Mediterranean and Italian-style cuisine. The rustic yet industrial space sports brick and wooden walls, dim lighting, black and white photos adorning walls, plush booths and tables outfitted with bright red chairs. Although La Bocca is the more sophisticated of the duo, Mill Avenue Management strives to create a welcoming atmosphere in both restaurants. “Everything needs to be, and is, approachable. I can’t even express more about the family and approachable feel that we try to convey in every single location,” says Tony Pethers, the restaurants’ general manager. La Bocca guests can chow down on piping hot pizzas made with homemade dough and hand-stretched mozzarella curds slid straight out from the kitchen’s impressive wood-fired oven. One of the restaurant’s signature pies, Truffled Mushroom, is topped with savory mushrooms, vine-ripened tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, fresh goat cheese and spinach, and is drizzled with a light balsamic vinaigrette. The food is always made from scratch, and “if we can’t make in house, we source out locally,” says Pethers. Besides the pizzas, guests can enjoy steamed mussels, a variety of bruschetta planks, as well as charcuterie and antipasti boards. When it comes to drinks, La Bocca stocks more than 150 domestic and international wine bottles and has recently unveiled a new cocktail menu. Wine Storing Tips • Wine loves constant temperature while it’s being stored. Temperature swings of greater than 5 to 10 degrees

onnoisseurs of fine wine have traditionally had to make do with storing their favorite beverage on wine racks, or by spending a great deal of money to have a custom wine storage system installed in their home. Thanks to Vinum55, a business that opened in Chandler in late March, wine collectors now have a safe and secure place to store their wine. “We offer a 55-degree, state-of-the-art, underground wine cellar,” says Raini Keyser, director of operations. “We have over 150 wine lockers of varying sizes, and the ability to accommodate just under 50,000 bottles.” From novice wine collectors who only have a relatively small collection to store, to aficionados with hundreds of bottles of wine from different vineyards, countries and years, Vinum55 offers plenty of storage options for customers at all levels. For example, for a newer collector, Keyser recommends one of their smaller lockers, which can hold 12 cases. “It has an attractive price point for membership, and the client would be invited to all Vinum 55 tasting events, which is a phenomenal way to learn about wine,” she says. 16

erome, Arizona, is a tiny mountain town that was once home to the most productive copper mine in the world back in the early 1900s. The wealth from the mine brought thousands to Jerome, and with it a slew of bars, bandits and other unsavory types, earning the city the nickname of "the wickedest town of the West." Even more, Jerome is teeming with stories of ghosts lingering long after the mine closed back in 1952. However, this “haunted” town is now a thriving art-and-wine-centric city. Here, take a journey through Jerome’s storied, haunted past and very much alive and vibrant present.

HISTORIC HAUNTS

Built in 1899, the Mile High Grille & Inn on Main Street was once the home of undertakers, madams and a ghost kitty, although many believe they never left. Don’t be surprised if you find that your towels and pillow have been moved while staying at the hotel; the cat might even “sleep” in your bed or leave indentations on the covers. Peeking out from the mountain tops, the towering 30,000-squarefoot Jerome Grand Hotel stands one-mile-high and offers spectacular, sweeping views of the city. It was once the best hospital in all of Arizona, but after closing in 1950, it stood vacant for decades. Now, remodeled as a 25-room hotel and restaurant, it is perhaps the most haunted spot in the entire city. One story tells of a hotel worker who was allegedly crushed to death by the key-operated elevator and still resides within the hotel walls. Daring individuals should book room

The Connor Hotel’s history is as colorful as that of the city in which it resides. Constructed in 1898 as a high-end hotel, the building burned down twice within two years of opening. It closed again in 1931, reopened in the 1960s during the town’s revival and closed again in the 1980s. It is now home to 12 quaint rooms and a happening bar and live music venue, the Spirit Room Bar. In August, the married couple transformed their love of craft beer into a business when they opened The Casual Pint in Chandler. “Amy and I have lived in this area for over eight years, and we thought it really needed a good place to get craft beer,” says Chad, adding that he has also been a home brewer since 1995. “Arizona has a rapidly growing craft beer market and we wanted to bring the unique coffee-shop-of-beer experience to Chandler’s local community.” Whether people are looking for a relaxing place to hang out with family and friends while enjoying some delicious beer and light snacks, or if they would like to buy craft beer to bring home, The Casual Pint definitely delivers. “We have more than 300 different beers to choose from, which guests can grab as six packs or mix-a-sixes. ocal residents Katey McPherson and Tessa Milne have some stand-out qualities in common: both are moms, professionals, and both are passionate about topics that have personally impacted their lives, as well as the lives of those around them. Beyond being just passionate, both ladies have become personally involved in their causes. Here are their stories.

OF A SURVIVOR ON DOMESTIC ABUSE

McPherson is a mom to four young daughters and spent 20 years as a public school teacher and administrator. During that time, she says she “saw a need for ways to teach students more self-advocacy and social competence skills.” “In 2005, I had a student attempt suicide on our school campus, and since then have had several students try to harm themselves over relational aggression [or] bullying incidents,” she says. “I am committed to raising awareness for students, parents and community members about ways we can teach students, parents and teachers how to increase social competency skills in our kids starting at a young age.” To become active in her mission, McPherson joined The Gurian Institute. “We [The Gurian Institute] host community awareness events, teacher and parent trainings, social competency training for students, internet safety and online device awareness trainings, as well as teacher and parent trainings on the topic of how girls and boys learn differently and what they need inside and outside of the classroom to be successful,” she explains. So, how can locals get involved? “Come to one of our events, host an event or training at your school for parents and teachers, talk to your kids about relational aggression and how they feel about it and ways they think you can best support them as they go through the most formative years of their life,” McPherson says. “Be ‘in the know’ kids want guidance and support and want you to ‘get them.’”

Milne literally embodies the name of her organization: Face Of A Survivor. “I became an inspirational speaker to spread awareness on the different forms of abuse, cycles of abuse and to share resources for victims and survivors of abuse and supporters against abuse,” she says. “The information I provide can potentially save lives. I'm extremely passionate about spreading awareness because abuse almost ended my life.” Milne has been speaking to groups, businesses, at events, schools and more since 2009, and officially began Face of A Survivor last year. “I'm giving to others what I never had when I was a victim of abuse: support, guidance, inspiration and awareness,” she says. “Together we can make a difference, break the silence and empower.” “Abuse is more common than people realize, and it comes in so many forms. There are even people going through abuse and don't even know it because they don't know all of the different forms of abuse,” she adds. “Abuse is an issue people are afraid to talk about, ashamed to talk about or have been silenced for so long and don't know how to use their voice or where to start… It's time to change this mindset.” In addition to her public speaking, Milne’s website contains information that is helpful to both victims of abuse and those looking to learn more and help with the cause. “I use my voice every day to spread awareness about abuse, to encourage others, to potentially save lives,” she says. “Remember this: you have a voice and your voice matters.”
