As the first hints of spring begin to soften the Georgia landscape, there is a natural urge to open the windows, clear out the winter clutter, and look at our surroundings with fresh eyes. March has always felt like a month of renewal, and there is no better time to dedicate our pages to the theme of "Home." To us, home is more than a street address in the 30341 ZIP code; it's the sanctuary where our lives unfold and the primary canvas upon which we express our truest selves.

In this issue, we wanted to go behind the front doors of some of Chamblee’s most inspiring spaces. We are thrilled to feature Susie Prince of Susie Mae Design, an interior designer whose work is a masterclass in blending history with modern livability. We’ll also introduce you to Artistry Design Studio. As a brand-new addition to the Chamblee business community, this custom cabinet company is already proving that the "bones" of a home can be works of art in their own right. And whether you are in the middle of a full-scale renovation or simply looking for a few small ways to refresh your favorite nook, you can look to the experts at Habitations LLC.
I hope the stories in this issue spark your imagination. Our homes are the backdrop for our most cherished memories—the slow Sunday mornings, the celebratory dinners, and the quiet moments of rest in between. They deserve to be as vibrant and unique as the people who live within them.
Thank you for allowing us to be a small part of your home this month. As you walk through our downtown or explore the hidden gems of our neighborhoods this spring, I hope you feel the same sense of pride and belonging that makes Chamblee such a special place to hang your hat.

It’s one of life’s peculiarities that anytime an event is hosted, no matter how beautifully appointed the rest of the house, all guests end up in the kitchen. More than the heart of the home, kitchens have become the hub of socialization, which shows up in the world of home design. In addition to their full spectrum home renovations, Habitations LLC now offers boutique design projects to address lifestyle pain points without blowing the bank. Robert Platt and Aaron Michelle Baker, the father-daughter team serving the Chamblee area, have a combined 55 years of experience. Their individual and shared expertise ensures clients receive design solutions that aren’t merely a product of fads or trends, but fit their lifestyle.
A key quality is the ability to ask the right questions that lead to spaces that serve the clients to the utmost degree. When it comes to kitchens, the experts at Habitations explore whether you cook together, eat together, have kids, what specific storage and counter space needs are, and more. In addition, they may ask what you dislike about your current space. Are the spices impossible to keep organized? Is the shelf for plates too high or too far from the dishwasher? Do you and your spouse bump elbows while chopping vegetables? These irritations may seem small, but over time, they can impact daily living.
It’s not only about your lifestyle today, but also the future. The experts at Habitations may forecast the needs of your family over the years, and consider other renovations you plan on later. A key mantra is, “Don’t spend the same dollar twice,” never wanting clients to implement changes that will need to be redone in a few years. Their wide breadth of knowledge and expertise gives them insight to catch the smallest changes that can have the largest impacts.
Early in Robert’s career, he learned cabinet making under his father, and this experience counts him among the best designers for a kitchen remodel. He now shares this history with Aaron Michelle. Kitchens, along with bathrooms and laundry rooms, share the challenges of water. Oftentimes builders use cabinets made of materials that simply can't withstand the daily exposure and routine mishaps that come with water. Whether it’s an accident or a burst pipe, the type of cabinet you choose for installation matters greatly, and you don’t always get what you pay for. Robert suggests that plywood and solid wood will always perform better than particle board. In addition, cabinet costs vary significantly, especially when a brand name is attached. Even if they’re beautiful, they may have equal or lesser function than more affordable options. Robert says it’s a question of value versus cost.

“Our goal is always to give you the best value and to be stewards of your lifestyle and your finances.”

Aaron Michelle, whose mastery of hard surfaces, interior design, and architecture makes her a true triple threat, is your guide for materials. She knows which products are worthwhile and will best serve your needs given the space and your wallet. She carefully listens and observes how your preferences reveal themselves while browsing samples, and she understands that timeless design that skews toward your personal tastes always trumps trends.
Whether you’re ready for a complete kitchen overhaul or you don’t want to move a single wall, they will customize your space to address the needs, comfort, and future plans of your family - every renovation is built around you. But there is one aspect Habitations LLC incorporates into almost every remodel: maximum drawer-base cabinets. After doing the math and for most base cabinets of the same size, drawers will provide about 33% more storage maximizing efficiency and ease of access for hard-to-reach items while decreasing clutter.
And the team wants to ensure your money is well spent. Robert and Aaron Michelle cite instances where a client may estimate a fifteen-foot expansion is needed for a remodel. But for the father-daughter duo, experience has shown it may be possible to accomplish the mission with a lesser expansion. “Our goal is always to give you the best value and to be stewards of your lifestyle and your finances,” Aaron Michelle says. It’s this dedication to client happiness that sets Habitations LLC apart from others, adhering to lifestyle needs over specific products or fleeting trends. “We literally design the kitchen around you - not products,” she says. “Products serve what we design for you, but we don't design to the products. We design to you and then choose the products to fit that."
As far as trends go, Robert and Aaron Michelle scoff at many. If there’s a current trend someone deeply loves and believes they will still love in the years to come, they fully support it. Color trends implemented in paint or backsplash finishes for example are easy to change down the road. So those are areas open to more alternatives.
“We literally design the kitchen around you - not products. Products serve what we design for you, but we don’t design to the products. We design to you and choose the products to fit that.”

But in terms of configuration, timeless is best, with an eye on making the space usable every day. You’ll never regret adding a pantry or a widened archway to connect spaces.
Robert and Aaron Michelle emphasize how deep their love runs for this work and every single client. They don’t view projects as an opportunity to display their own design ideals; they view each project as a way to cultivate a comfortable, workable space that reflects the family who will be living their lives there. The design process is collaborative. They want to hear feedback, and regardless of initial ideas, they always arrive at a solution that works. Renovating with Habitations LLC offers the opportunity to visualize your ideal space and find real-life solutions to get as close as possible to that vision.
Enlist this family-run business to take the next step in crafting your ideal kitchen, gathering area, and home. As Robert declares, “Renovating a home is the greatest form of recycling; to repurpose a home for a new generation rather than waste the skilled labor, materials and environmental impact that have already brought it this far.”

Our homes serve as a refuge from the ravages of the outer world. Stepping through the front door, we need to feel a sense of calm and coziness to unwind. "The way our homes look and function has a true impact on how we feel,” says Susie Prince, founder of Susie Mae Design. Susie first recalls falling in love with an interior space while watching the 1994 adaptation of Little Women . Growing up in a farmhouse herself, she was in awe of the one featured in the film and developed a fascination with every detail. Throughout her childhood, Susie recalls redecorating her bedroom over and over, demonstrating an already keen eye for aesthetics.
A degree in graphic design kick-started her career trajectory. At that time, interior design didn’t feel like an accessible career, so she decided to channel her visual talents into a corporate avenue. Her first job, designing for Home Depot’s Home Decorator’s Collection, foreshadowed her future. She met a colleague there who worked in the interior design world with HGTV, and they began a blog together. Then, when a three-month styling gig with the station came up, she leapt at the opportunity with full faith. Quitting her corporate job and diving headfirst into her dreams paid off.
Eleven years later, Susie Mae Design is a roaring success. Susie tailors every home she touches to enhance form and function while spotlighting each client’s individuality. By maximizing square footage, new life is breathed into previously underutilized spaces. This is much more than a luxury service; it is “emotional medicine.” Our capacity for rest is directly tied to our surroundings, and when we step into an expertly curated environment, filled with textures and memories, internal balance follows.
Susie Mae Design offers a range of services, from consultations to full renovation makeovers. Susie’s signature styling always includes a careful balance of colors and patterns through layered textiles (she loves
softening a space with subtle animal prints). She always encourages hand-knotted wool rugs: they are durable, easy to clean, and stunningly crafted. "Hand-knotted rugs are a work of art that you can walk on,” she says. “They will last forever. They're an heirloom piece." The furniture upholstery she and her team select is always of the highest quality while adding visual interest to the space. You’ll also find pieces that encompass the beauty of the natural world, with a special affinity for burlwood and stone. These are elements that provide something “humankind can’t recreate,” she adds.
Susie’s reverence for authenticity and grounded beauty is reflected clearly in her designs. She doesn’t make assumptions about her clients’ taste based on existing items in the home, as they could be gifted, hand-me-downs, or bought during a trend cycle. "I don't want to only know what style you like,” she explains. “I want to know where you've been, what kind of food you like. Do you like animals? Do you like old stuff? What are the things that make you tick?" This ability to listen deeply and ask the right questions helps her and her team get to the root of who her clients are based on their personal history, hobbies, and passions.
The design team thrives on collaboration, and you’re enlisting an array of experts when you start a project with them. Susie is the Principal Lead Designer, and Elizabeth Lamb serves as the Associate Designer. This core duo creates magic together, and Susie describes bringing Elizabeth on full-time as her “best business decision.” She serves as a sounding board and second set of eyes, infusing every project with elevated creativity while taking some of the endless decision-making off Susie’s plate. Brinley Gunther crafts 3D floor plans and drawings on an as-needed basis, and contractors are brought in to assist with renderings and other services when needed.
“When you’re represented better in your home, when your home functions better, you feel more at peace; then, you can show up better in other places in life.”
“Working with Susie Mae Design entails being honored for your unique personality and life experiences while receiving a deeply effective design upgrade.”

Susie and Elizabeth are also passionate pet advocates, partnering with and fostering for Lifeline Animal Project. This advocacy shows up in how they incorporate furry family members into their home designs with thoughtful care. From pet-friendly performance fabrics on furniture to decorative baskets for toys, Susie and her team honor everyone in your home. A signature idea Susie has been loving is including custom-made sofa covers crafted from matching upholstery fabric. The fabric blends perfectly into your furniture while protecting it from shedding and other wear-and-tear, and it’s effortless to toss off for company. And they always make sure to carve out a designated spot for pet beds in every single room.
Working with Susie Mae Design entails being honored for your unique personality and life experiences while receiving a deeply effective design upgrade. Everyone is heard, respected, and has fun along the way. In Susie’s words, "When you're represented better in your home, when your home functions better, you feel more at peace, you're better rested, and so then you can show up better in other places in life." Elevate your everyday life with Susie Mae Design.

LEARN MORE: Susie Prince’s decor style leans eclectic with color and patterns. Her home, built in the 1960s, incorporates mid-century modern elements to align with its architecture. She designs bedrooms and family rooms for their textural possibilities, and loves brightly colored kitchens.

March kicks off the busiest season in real estate. If buying, selling, or investing is on your radar this year, now is the time to create a smart strategy.
Let’s position you for success this spring with the right pricing, timing, and market insight to help you move with confidence.

Dalia Alvarez Perez grew up with two sisters and a younger brother and raised by a single mother, who instilled the value of resiliency in them. That helped each of them move forward and shape different visions and careers. Now Dalia and her sisters, Patricia and Maria, have come together and opened Artistry Design Studio located in the Golden Plaza at 3302 Laventure Drive, Suite A110 in Chamblee.
Dalia, director of operations, handles administrative tasks, while Patricia and Maria are the senior designers. Together the siblings work as a team along with their younger brother, Victor Garcia Perez, on a vision and a mission to sell cabinets at a 100% customer satisfaction and to dominate the Buford Highway corridor.
Why cabinetry? Dalia explains it was about seven years ago when Patricia started her journey in the cabinet industry as a sales associate. But the idea for the siblings to work together didn’t come until around 2024 when Patricia was asked to go to the West Coast to open a new warehouse. After successfully opening the warehouse and leaving it fully staffed and operational, she came back with experience and knowledge and the idea of venturing out on her own. Maria had been a stay-at-home mother, but Dalia says Maria was ready for a new business venture. Together, they created a business plan and pulled the trigger. In January 2025, they officially started sourcing a physical location for what would become their design studio and cabinet showroom.
At Artistry Design Studio they offer Ready to Assemble (RTA) products and some customization, depending on the fabricator chosen. They start with in home assessments. Dalia explains they come into your home to match the client with the best product available. “It also gives us the opportunity to take physical measurements of the space,” she says. Designing software is then used to create the designs and layout plans with 3D renderings for the customer to review. Then it’s on to the modification stage where the design team collects feedback from the client. “The client shares their personal likes or dislikes about the design,” Dalia says. “We have over 30 different types of styles and colors, and we help guide them through that decision-making process by helping them understand the construction of the product they’re choosing.” Once selections are made, they deliver, and then experienced and knowledgeable carpenters install the product. Dalia says they work with homeowners, designers, contractors, builders and more. “It can be very overwhelming, specifically for a homeowner to manage all of the scopes (in a project), so we definitely help guide and provide necessary tools and vendor contacts, so they have everything they need to make decisions.”
The siblings grew up in Chamblee playing recreational soccer at Atlanta Eagles Arena and went to Cross Keys High School, and while Dalia says they understand they are in an American consumer economy, they also never lost their Latino roots. They are bilingual and bicultural. It’s this diversity that helps them when it comes to communicating with some clients and contractors. “Having that extra skill set, I think it’s great we’re able to tap into that,” she explains. “There are a lot of successful Latina female business owners out there, so we know right off the bat that we can be successful.”
Dalia stresses that it was important to find a location for their business in Chamblee. “It was super important that we were in our neighborhood,” she says. “There’s nothing like tapping into your own community for support.” After growing up in the area, Dalia recognizes the growth in the area. “We got to the stage where we said we want to be a part of the continuing change and thinking about how we can contribute to the development of our neighborhood.”
As business owners, Dalia says the siblings are adapting to working together as a team, each bringing unique and individual visions to the table. But one thing they agree on is that they are all working to make sure their business succeeds, and they don’t see failure as an option. Dalia says Victor, being the youngest, brings a sense of excitement and energy to the team.
“We are honest, hardworking, ethical business owners who love our community,” Dalia says. “We’re community oriented. We understand there are lots of options for cabinetry, but I think working locally with somebody around the corner, creates even a better opportunity for projects. It takes away some of the stress of having to source outside, managing timelines, and just our overall commitment to the client’s needs - There's no detail too small, and no vision too large.”

A bookcase is often more than just a storage unit for books; it’s a focal point of a room that can enhance the overall decor and reflect personal style. Styling a bookcase can be a rewarding endeavor, allowing you to showcase your literary collection and curate a space that feels inviting and visually appealing. Here are some tips to help you achieve a beautifully styled bookcase.
Styling a bookcase is a creative process that combines practicality with aesthetics. By using these tips, you can transform an ordinary bookshelf into a stylish, engaging focal point that complements your home’s decor while showcasing your personality and interests.
When placing books back on the shelves, think about the arrangement, vertical stacks are more traditional, horizontal stacks more modern, or both for more visual interest. Adding decorative elements such as picture frames, vases, or sculptural objects to break the monotony. Incorporating items with varying heights can create a dynamic arrangement. Use larger items like art pieces or baskets on lower shelves and smaller decorative objects higher up. Aim for a balanced look while avoiding perfect symmetry. This creates an organic flow, drawing the eye naturally across the shelf. Incorporate asymmetrical groupings for added interest, mixing textures, colors, and shapes.
Use Color Wisely and Add Natural Elements.
Color plays a role in styling a bookcase. You can opt for a monochromatic palette for a sophisticated look or introduce pops of color for a more energetic vibe. If your books are of various colors, pick a few colorful decorative pieces that complement or contrast them effectively. Integrating plants or natural elements can breathe life into your bookcase. Small potted plants can add color and texture.
Create Zones and Add Personal Touches.
If your bookcase has multiple shelves, consider creating zones or themes for different sections. Infuse your personality into the bookcase through memorabilia, travel souvenirs, or personal artwork. These pieces add a storytelling dimension and make the space uniquely yours.

There’s something about this fresh, ethereal feeling that not only melts away the last traces of winter but also sparks a quiet urge to refresh our surroundings. The cupboards that need decluttering, the baseboards that have gone untouched for months, the unworn clothes that no longer serve us—it all calls for renewal. This is the essence of spring cleaning: clearing out the old to make space for the new, both in our homes and in our minds.
For some, the idea of cleaning feels anything but peaceful. The thought of tackling clutter and dust can be overwhelming, turning what should be a refreshing transition into a dreaded chore. That’s why we’ve created a simple, practical guide to help you navigate spring cleaning with ease, turning it into a rhythmic, intentional process that mirrors the calm of the season itself.
