Loving Local in Chamblee! February is traditionally known as the month of Love (if you believe what Hallmark tells you), and this month our theme is Love Local, a nice dovetail of the theme of Love and my passion, which is supporting Local. A few years ago I jumped into the entrepreneurial world and purchased a local health food store, Nuts ‘n Berries, from its original owners. I’d been in the corporate world for nearly 20 years and knew it well. I also knew it wasn’t for me – I wanted to do something where I could chart my own course and make a difference in the community. Most importantly, I wanted to support other local small business owners. I thought I knew what I was in for, but in reality, I had no idea the impact that supporting small business owners would have on me. I absolutely loved it and quickly realized it's my true passion – to find local hidden gems that are right under our noses, and help get their messages, products and services out to the community. Now I’m doing the same but in a different way. I have this publication to highlight people and businesses that make Chamblee what it is and what it continues to become, and I couldn’t be happier. One of my central themes from a business perspective for nearly a decade now is Love Local. Lots of us say this and hear it, but what does it REALLY mean? Love Local means your local businesses, those in your community - so grab coffee one morning at Moonbird or Choice Coffee or order fresh oysters at Lagarde on a date night or take swings at Atlanta Golf & Social with friends or have a day of pampering at Spavia Day Spa – all of which support your Chamblee community while you have a good time and enjoy yourselves. Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together, and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. BECAUSE. CHOCOLATE. C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

As we talk Love Local, what’s more local than where you live? At home, we want to create spaces we love, so we asked Jenny Ochotnicky owner of JPO Interiors, a boutique design and build firm in Chamblee, for some ideas. Jenny says your home is your sacred space where you spend a lot of time and where you want to be the happiest. “I love to help clients solve a problem,” Jenny says. “They really want a space they’re happy with and to make it more usable and functional.” Whether building a new place to suit your needs or updating an existing space, we discussed five elements to think about when creating a space you love.

COLOR

Color is a great way to update a space without breaking the bank. Jenny says she likes to discover colors her client loves, patterns they love, and why they love them, to create a palette that will make them happy. She talks with the client and takes cues from colors used in other areas of the home. Once dominant colors are identified, she can work around them using varying shades, complementary colors, and textures to create variety and interest. Jenny says adding neutral colors such as white and cream can create a warm and inviting feel to the space. And don’t be afraid to add color where color is unexpected, such as to trim work or the ceiling.

FUNCTION AND ORGANIZATION

To understand the function and organization of a space, Jenny stresses that it’s important to understand the current use of the space, the purpose of

the space, and what you want to get out of the space. For example, some people tend to put their furniture against the wall creating a large open space in the middle of the room. “Sometimes that’s necessary, but sometimes it’s not,” Jenny says. “Pulling the furniture off the walls and creating cozier seating areas can really change the function of the room. If the room is not functioning well, then it’s likely it’s not laid out correctly or the furniture isn’t laid out correctly.” Organization creates a calm and inviting space. It can be useful to bring in an expert organizer. Jenny says for a loft in Chamblee, Annie McGinn of Simply Sorted by Annie, was called in to help clients sort through things they had accumulated over time. “She helped them go through and purge, donate, and get rid of things they no longer needed,” she said.

HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

Creating a space for hobbies and interests is an area that’s often more fun and exciting. “It’s a place where you can be a little bolder and a little more grandiose with design versus maybe a living room or a dining room,” Jenny says. Areas such as craft rooms, art studios, wine cellars, man caves, she sheds, home gyms and the like, are places to have fun and bend the rules a bit. Jenny points out that basements make great dedicated spaces for hobbies and interests.

HOME OFFICE

Now that many of us are working from home, it’s important to have a dedicated workspace. To create a workspace you love, Jenny says to consider the function of your workspace. Do you need a full office, CONTINUED >

or just a dedicated space? Do you need storage? Are others working from home? Do you need privacy from noise and other distractions? With video calls and virtual meetings, consider your background. She cautions against using your primary bedroom as an office.

CREATING A SPACE AROUND AN EXISTING ITEM YOU LOVE

There may be a piece of furniture, artwork, window treatment or other item wanted for sentimental reasons or you just love it. Jenny says this can be a good thing. Creating a space you love around an item can be helpful, especially when it comes to budgets. “Anytime there

are large pieces or key pieces the client wants to keep, it helps stretch the budget in other ways,” Jenny says. For example, when renovating cabinets and the boxes are in good shape, you can do more by using the funds to reface the cabinets and add new hardware. She also suggests using your imagination. A vintage piece of furniture can be painted and updated to be used in a different room with a different function, like a vintage secretary desk she repurposed into a bar. “I think the best designs have new and old layered together,” she says. “And that’s perfectly fine.” To learn more about JPO Interiors, visit jpointeriors.com.

After World War I and World War II, the city went through industrial growth with large corporations building and settling in the area, mainly industrial and manufacturing sites. In the 1980s that all changed. Chamblee residents moved to other areas of metro Atlanta and refugees and immigrants made their way to Chamblee. And during the 1990s more changes took place leading to the protection of the city’s history, while moving forward with modern redevelopment opportunities. The city continues to move forward on a progressive course and making it a prime area for its central location between I-285 and I-85, and it’s one of DeKalb County’s fastest growing cities. Today the city is more than seven square miles with more than 30,000 residents and a diverse population. Check out the photos for a look back at the history of Chamblee. As we’re looking to Love Local in this issue, we can’t fully love where we are if we don’t look at where we’ve been. So we wanted to take a look at the history of Chamblee to get a glimpse of where the community came from. The city of Chamblee has a write-up of Chamblee’s unique history on the city’s website. According to the website, Chamblee was one of 10 cities in DeKalb County and was incorporated August 17, 1908. The website also explains that the city started out as dairies, railroads, and the military, with the dairies and the railroads dominating the landscape at the time. It was 1917 when the landscape changed and Chamblee went from mostly dairy land to the home of Camp Gordon and 40,000 military personnel. This caused significant growth. “Almost overnight, forty new stores, three theaters, two hotels and a bowling alley were built to cater to this new population,” it states on the city’s website.
