LIFESTYLE LETTER

Starting the Year Off Right For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. We approached this issue of Centerville Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We hope to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Women’s bodies go through extraordinary changes during and after pregnancy. During her own pregnancy and postpartum experience, local mother and personal trainer Morgan Greger wanted to learn how to work out safely. This sparked a passion that turned into a business. Learn more about her journey starting Born Active Training and her tips for how to stay active during and after pregnancy. Many of us often wait until we feel severe pain before seeking help from medical professionals. Fortunately, there are new innovative approaches to healing that may help people avoid surgery and pain medication. Read how QC Kinetix is bringing regenerative medicine to the Dayton area and the types of pain that can be treated. Our Giving Back story shines a light on A Special Wish Foundation. Fulfilling the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses for 40 years, this incredible organization continues to go above and beyond to help kids be kids. Take a look at wishes that have been granted as well as how you can get involved and support their mission. Eating healthy is usually on the list of resolutions, but it can be difficult to change existing habits. An easy way to start is to include more colorful veggies into your meal routines. Check out the “Color Your Plate” feature for tips on how to add more winter vegetables to your meals, including a veggie-loaded breakfast bowl recipe. So, are you ready to start those resolutions? We think the first one on your list should be reading this month’s Health & Wellness issue. Happy New Year! MARK ANDREA, PUBLISHER @CENTERVILLELIFESTYLE

THE DAYTON CHAPTER OF A SPECIAL WISH FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF WISHES GRANTED.

14

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

For the past 40 years, the Dayton chapter of A Special Wish Foundation has been granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. “As we celebrate our 40th year, we are proud to say that we have never denied a child a wish due to lack of funding,” relates David Seyer, executive director for the Dayton chapter. A Special Wish Dayton has granted more than 1800 wishes to local kids. David joined A Special Wish Dayton in 2011 and over the years has seen firsthand the positive effects that having a wish granted can have on a child and their family. “A wish mom once told me that Special Wish was the sunshine in the middle of a tornado and I feel that really sums up the impact A Special Wish has not only on the wish kid but also on the entire family,” says David. “When their wish is granted, most wish kids have the opportunity to put hospital stays and doctor visits behind them for a week, and just be a kid again.” A Special Wish Foundation is one of only a few wish-granting organizations in the country that grants wishes for children and adolescents from

birth to age 20. Wishes are only limited by the imagination of the wish child and are fulfilled solely with the generous support of the Dayton community. Most wishes are either a special gift like a laptop, playground or even a puppy, a trip to a special place like Walt Disney World, the Super Bowl or the beach, or meeting a hero like a sports figure or celebrity. David recalls one wish child meeting President Barack Obama and another meeting Dale Earnhardt Jr. “We provide a silver lining for the family in the middle of immense challenges. Knowing that A Special Wish can provide a family with memories that will last a lifetime and give the family hope in what sometimes seems like a hopeless situation is very rewarding,” shares David. Most recently, A Special Wish Dayton was able to grant a wish by sending Scarlett Unrast to Disney World. Diagnosed at the age of one with neuroblastoma, a rare and life-threatening cancer, Scarlett often watched Disney movies during her treatments and she fell in love with the princesses. On her wish trip, Scarlett visited the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in the Magic Kingdom where children are primped by Fairy Godmother’s Apprentices and transformed into princesses. Her mother Lindsey recalls the joy that becoming a princess brought Scarlett, “She was used to not having hair. So when they put the fake hair on her, she looked and felt like a movie star. If you would’ve seen her face, it was priceless.” The entire family was able to enjoy the trip together.

A Special Wish is focused on one mission and that is to raise money to grant wishes. “Without the generous support of the entire community, these children would not be able to see their wish come true,” adds David. The best way to support A Special Wish Dayton is through donations or by participating in one of their fundraisers. All funds raised by A Special Wish Dayton stay within the community to grant the wishes of local children who are fighting for their lives. The first fundraiser of the year is the Dancing with the Dayton Stars fundraiser held March 25 at Wright State University's Nutter Center featuring local community leaders paired with professional dancers for a competition. Following this event is The Superhero Donut Run in May held at Centerville High School. This is a fun family-friendly fundraiser that includes a kids fun run, 5K and 10K options. Superheroes are on site to give high fives at the finish line and Bill’s Donuts are handed out after the race. All proceeds for both events go directly to A Special Wish Dayton. When Morgan Greger, six-year fitness coach and owner of Born Active Training became pregnant, she quickly discovered firsthand the lack of consistent information on how to work out safely as a pregnant or postpartum woman. “Pregnancy and postpartum fitness guidelines from the internet can be vague and confusing,” shares Morgan. “Having someone who understands what you’re feeling and what is going on with your body is really important.” In May of 2022, upon earning her Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism Certification, Morgan opened Born Active Training offering personal training services inside Centerville CrossFit and her home gym. Her main focus is helping women navigate how to safely be active during pregnancy and postpartum and combat symptoms associated with core and pelvic floor dysfunction as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. Pelvic floor and core dysfunction occurring from pregnancy is common and leads to back, hip and pelvic pain and bladder leakage. “Women do not have to accept that ‘this is how life is now,’ we can absolutely do something about those things no matter how many years postpartum you are,” explains Morgan.

1. Always ask yourself why and how when exercising. WHY do I want to do this exercise? Is HOW I’m doing this exercise good for my body long term? 2. Use the talk test to judge the intensity of your workout. Your goal is to be able to have a conversation during your workout. If you are too out of breath to talk, slow it down.

Morgan has an empathetic approach to training. “I strive to make every single mom that I work with feel comfortable, understood, strong and proud of the work they are putting in.” Her clients describe her as kind, approachable, encouraging and knowledgeable. Ally Berger began training with Morgan to help build strength and endurance during her pregnancy. “Morgan really pays attention to your form and offers kind guidance and corrections when needed,” shares Ally. “She is easy to communicate with and makes her workouts accessible to everyone.” Working with women to meet their goals is exactly what Morgan is all about. Struggling with a weak core and pelvic floor, Chelsea Buck could barely work out without difficulties when she reached out to Morgan. “Most women are surprised by their postpartum bodies. I was no exception,” observes Chelsea who has been able to reach her goals with Morgan. “Working with Morgan has helped me gain total control of my pelvic floor. My core strength has improved and I have returned to my pre-pregnancy exercise routines.” Morgan tailors her training plans to meet the individual needs and goals of each of her clients. Megan Jay began training with Morgan after the birth of her daughter to help keep her chronic illness postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) at bay. “I’ve worked with trainers before and no one has been as considerate or thorough as Morgan has in regard to my chronic illness. Morgan goes above and beyond to make sure I can work out safely.” Morgan offers several different training packages for pregnant and postpartum women that can be done online or in-person. Beginning at the end of January, Morgan is launching a Pregnancy and Postpartum six-week class at Centerville CrossFit. Classes are 60 minutes long, occurring twice a week. For more information on this class or to start training with Morgan, reach out to her directly at bornactivetraining19@gmail.com or through a direct message on Instagram (@born_active_training). QC Kinetix offers treatment alternatives to surgery and pain medications.

Whether it comes from an injury or a medical condition, pain can change your life and reduce your activity level. Traditional methods of dealing with pain and injuries may provide relief, but there can be unintended drawbacks. At QC Kinetix, regenerative medicine utilizes the body’s own healing power through a natural biologic approach. Treatment plans are tailored to fit individualized needs. Superior service and attention are given to patients as they receive state-of-the-art treatments. Some patients feel relief after their first treatment, but results vary by patient. Drew and Missy Bright opened the local branch of QC Kinetix in Kettering in November 2021, bringing the rapidly growing field to the Miami Valley. Innovation has made regenerative medicine scalable now, where it was once only available to top-tier athletes like company spokesman and former NFL legend, Emmitt Smith. In a testimonial video, Smith says, “I’m not giving in to the pain, and neither should you.” Surgeries can often have lengthy recovery times, and pain medications carry the risk of addiction. Treatments at QC Kinetix are less invasive, require little to no recovery time, and don’t necessitate pain medications. Treatments can also be used in conjunction with other medical solutions such as physical therapy and chiropractic visits. Options can be discussed during a free consultation.

22

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | PROF E S S I ONAL S E RVI CE S

Drew says, “My wife and I wanted to establish a clinic in which the patient’s experience is a top priority. We want to be on the journey with our patients as they go through our treatments to meet their goals whether that’s being a dog walker, playing golf again, walking on the beach, getting up and down the stairs or even getting in and out of the car with little to no pain. It has been and is very rewarding for Missy and me to see the improved quality of life of our patients.” QC Kinetix employs a medical director and nurse practitioners to help design and provide treatments. Drew states, “Our medical staff is tremendous, and the patient’s care is a top priority. Our staff is the reason for our success.” Patricia M. Gilmore offers this reflection on her experience after five treatments, “Everyone from the Kettering staff has been wonderful, professional, and caring. They really care about my well-being and success with the procedure. QC Kinetix has been a game-changer for me. I never thought I’d be pain-free.” Whether it’s pain in the knees, lower back, hips, shoulders, or elsewhere, QC Kinetics can offer a plan aimed at providing life-changing treatments that can help take away pain without pills.

Types of Pain Treated 1

| Bursitis:

Inflammation in the bursa area in the hips or shoulders. Bursitis can be caused by using repetitive motions or putting joints in positions that apply pressure to the bursae near that joint. Bursitis may also be caused by trauma to a joint.

2

| Tendonitis:

Inflammation or irritation in the tendons of the joints. Overuse and strain on a joint may cause tendonitis. Examples include tennis or golf elbow, bicep tendonitis and gluteal tendinosis. Extreme or sudden motions and poor body mechanics can also cause tendonitis.

3

| Arthritis:

Inflammation of all types of joints causing stiffness and a decrease in mobility. Arthritis occurs when the cartilage between your bones and joints gradually deteriorates.

4

| Muscle pain:

Pulling, spasms and reduced range of motion. Muscle pain can be caused by tension, stress, overuse and minor injuries. Muscle pain can be treated whether it’s due to a chronic condition, an accident or a sports injury.

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE

Plant-based eating is not just for vegans and vegetarians! More of a lifestyle shift than a diet, you are simply incorporating more plants that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing into your meals. “A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients,” explains Claudia Martin-Ayoade, a registered dietitian and nutritional wellness consultant. As much as we know that there are many benefits to incorporating a variety of plants and vegetables into our meal routines, it can be especially difficult in the winter. While a variety of vegetables are available year round at the grocery store, many will have traveled a long way to get there and aren’t in their peak season. Still, there are plenty of deliciously colorful options in season in the winter such

as: sweet potatoes, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, carrots, parsnips, Swiss chard, collard greens and radishes. Brandy Skelton, local owner of Busy Bee Real Meals, and expert in preparing balanced, healthy meals for busy people, has several recommendations for adding more of these fresh, winter veggies to your meals during the cold season. “Chop and prep veggies whenever you make lunches or are already in the kitchen,” encourages Brandy. “I often chop veggies after dinner but before dishes, then clean it all up together.” Claudia adds, “Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber.” By doing this, you’re reducing waste and giving yourself additional greens that can be used in salads and for juicing. “CHOP AND PREP VEGGIES WHENEVER YOU MAKE LUNCHES OR ARE ALREADY IN THE KITCHEN.”

28

You can also roast veggies anytime the oven is already on. Brandy shares, “If I’m making an egg bake or a sheet pan dinner, I’ll throw in another pan of veggies or another sheet pan dinner to cook at the same time. Then I put it away for a busier day or portion it out for lunch.” Brandy also recommends keeping things on hand like leafy greens, cabbage, cauliflower rice and spaghetti squash to use for bulking up leftovers or as replacements for carbs and starches. Another way to increase your veggie intake is to incorporate them into meals like breakfast in the form of leafy greens in your smoothies, “past their prime” veggies for juices, or roasted vegetables in a breakfast bowl like this delicious recipe Brandy shared with us.

ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS & SWEET POTATO BREAKFAST BOWL W/ MUSTARD VINAIGRETTE This recipe can really use any leftover, roasted vegetables or an egg instead of chicken sausage. The vinaigrette also pairs well with a spinach salad, and chicken or pork tenderloin with veggies.

Bowl Ingredients: • • • • • •

1 lb Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved or quartered, depending on size 1 lb sweet potatoes (or two large), diced 3/4 lb chicken sausage, pre-cooked 2 teaspoons garlic, minced 1 Tablespoon olive oil Salt & pepper, to taste

Vinaigrette: • • • • •

1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/4 cup coarse ground mustard 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup olive oil Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions: 1.

2. 3. 4. 5.

Preheat the oven to 375°F and prep the vegetables. Lay both out on sheet trays lined with foil. Toss veggies in oil and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with minced garlic. Roast in the oven for 20-30 minutes, until fork tender. Remove and cool. Slice cooked chicken sausages into bite-sized pieces. Whisk all vinaigrette ingredients together in a small bowl. Assemble your bowls by portioning potatoes, Brussels sprouts (about 1/2 cup each) and sausages (1/2 cup or 2 sausages) in four meal prep containers. Pair each bowl with a 2 ounce portion cup of vinaigrette or drizzle vinaigrette over the top. Reheat in the microwave 30-60 seconds before eating.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
