LIFESTYLE LETTER

For The Gents

An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone push ing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives.

This month we celebrate men!

Take out the gents in your life on an adventure on Lake Texoma, or to enjoy a cigar and bourbon at a local lounge, or for an evening watching an outdoor concert with the family. We are inspired by a few good men in Letter To My Younger Self.  These gentlemen reflect on lessons learned and share these thoughts with the next generation. On our cover is Coach Bill Elliott, Head Football Coach and Athletic Director of the Celina Bobcats. He led his team to a State Championship win this past season and was named GA Moore Coach of the Year.

To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you! The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

Thank you for reading our Gentlemen's Issue, and we'll see you around town!

Selling Celina

As a city, Celina has something for everyone in the world of real estate. It really works for every kind of buyer I serve. If someone is looking for acreage or a larger lot so that they have some space between their neighbors, there are numerous neighborhoods that are a fit. If having a ranchette or at least a place for a few farm animals and a garden, this dream is also a possibility. If you want to start a business in a town chock full of charm with a huge growth surge in the future, Celina checks the box! Whether you want new construction, a luxury estate, a starter home, or a historical home, this too can be found!

I have sold all of the above and appreciate that my options are endless. I have historically sold 140 homes both in and outside of the ETJ, some of them two and three times! I love watching this special town grow and seeing both singles and families thrive here. I personally experienced it when we arrived in 2002 and enjoy watching others do the same. Friendships run deep and Bobcat spirit is contagious! Celina is a lifestyle and provides numerous opportunities for new residents to plug in. Everyone was the new kid in town here at some point and the OG’s know how to give a warm welcome! There’s truly no place quite like it. If you are ready to upsize or downsize, looking for a completely different kind of home here, let’s talk!

We take the guesswork out of real estate.

BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED

Celina Resident, Christa Murray Stops To Smell The Flowers In Her Own Backyard Garden

It's June, and your work in the garden this spring is starting to bloom, presenting you with rewards for your hard work. Celina's local garden enthusiast, Christa Murray, shows us around her garden and shares with us her passion for growing things.

WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR PASSION FOR GARDENING?

I grew up in the panhandle of Texas on acreage near my grandparents. My grandmother always had a garden, and my siblings and I were required to help her with it. She lived to

be 98. I credit the garden with helping her maintain a healthy lifestyle and staying active. Through her, I developed my love for gardening and its many benefits.

I am a recreational therapist and have seen patients with brain injuries and disabilities benefit from adaptive gardening. The benefits include cognitive stimulation and physical activity. It is an approachable pastime for almost everyone.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR GARDEN?

I always wanted a white picket fence garden. When we first moved to Celina, I quickly realized that living on a property with acres of space to play was not going to be feasible. I had my husband build a couple of raised beds to give me a starter garden. I had a clear vision of what I wanted and got busy drawing my dream garden to fit into my backyard. Thankfully, the backyard is bigger than most, but still small.

WHAT DID YOU BUILD IN YOUR DREAM GARDEN?

My husband helped me build several raised planting beds with a white picket fence around the outside. We have a gate and the perfect trellis to grow climbing roses over the arched entry. We added over 400 pounds to the compost and soil, one wheel barrow at a time. We planted bulbs around the edge for early spring and summer blooms. In 2024, we added a greenhouse to allow me to store my tools and supplies and play with seedlings to get a jump on spring planting.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO GROW IN YOUR GARDEN?

I started with all I learned from my grandmother and typically grow vegetables, including cucumbers, okra, peppers, squash, jalepenos, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Every year, I try to grow tomatoes, but I guess I don't have the right touch. I have an herb garden, and I recently added a strawberry patch.

“In 2024, we added a greenhouse to allow me to store my tools and supplies and play with seedlings to get a jump on spring planting. ”

To beat the winter dead look, I have started to grow a winter garden that includes cabbages, kale, mixed greens with arugula, and broccoli.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH ALL THE PRODUCE YOU GROW?

I primarily grow for my family. I enjoy canning and storing vegetables to eat later and give to friends and neighbors as gifts.

WHAT IS NEW IN YOUR GARDEN THIS SUMMER?

I am still trying to crack the code on tomatoes. I am growing a new variety of cherry tomatoes that are intended to be more closely related to native plants. I have also added a hybrid version of a cucumber that should resemble a small cocktail pickle. I have also

started to grow more flowers in the garden. Growing a wildflower section invites the pollinators to the garden, which helps produce more vegetables. I learned that planting marigolds around your tomatoes creates a natural barrier against insects and other pests. Having a zinnia garden has the added benefit of attracting butterflies. Growing a couple of rows of large-headed sunflowers is always fun in hot summers.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE IF SOMEONE WANTED TO START A GARDEN IN THEIR YARD?

I always advise people to start small, focusing on something they love and are genuinely interested in. The Collin County Master Gardeners' webpage is a rich resource of insights, knowledge, classes, and valuable resources. ccmgatx.org/

The Great Outdoors Are Waiting For You This Summer

ADVENTURES ON THE WATER

Summer is the season to break free from routine and dive into the thrill of outdoor activities. With longer days and warmer weather, there is no better time to be outside. Living in Texas provides many opportunities to experience fun in the sun and water.

From over 7,000 lakes and 350 miles of coastal shoreline, there are many ways to embrace summer. When you think of being out on the water, whether it is on a lake or beach, many activities come to mind like fishing, boating, jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing, plus scuba diving and snorkeling.

For most Texans, a summer isn’t a summer without some form of lake life. Lake Texoma, one of the closest lakes nearby, is called the “Playground of the Southwest”. Lake Texoma attracts over six million visitors a year, many of whom bring their boats for water skiing, tubing, and of course, the abundant striper and bass fishing. Additionally, the lake is full of jet skis dashing across the water.

Longtime Celina resident Greg Jones has been taking his family of six to Lake Texoma since 2016. You will find the Jones family either on their boat, a jet ski, or hanging out in a cove on the water, or with friends at their dockominium. “Our family spends as much time as possible at the lake. It’s one of our favorite summer activities,” says Greg. “We have so many friends from Celina who join us there, as well as the Texoma friends we have met over the years,” he continued. There is nothing like freedom on the water. Don’t have a boat or maybe don’t want to mess with the hassle of boat ownership? You can still enjoy the lake as a member of the Freedom Boat Club located at Lake Texoma Grandpappy Point. Freedom Boat Club nationwide has over 5,000 boats to support your boating needs. As noted on their website, “from center consoles and

pontoons to bowriders, offshore fishing boats and wake boats, we have it all.” You just show up. Freedom Boat Club takes care of it all, maintenance, cleaning, repair, insurance, and storage.

If you are craving speed, jet skis are the ultimate rush. These nimble machines let you zip across the lake, carve tight turns, and catch air off waves. There are numerous marinas that offer jet ski rentals around Lake Texoma and other surrounding lakes.

Truthfully, as great as Texas is, it’s hot in the summer. Many people enjoy their outdoor activities in a nearby state. Colorado, for example, has cooler temperatures, but it is also a fabulous place to visit in their “off season”. It’s a premier destination for whitewater rafting with rapids that range from Class 1 to 5. The state has over five rivers known

for their white water rafting along the most beautiful mountains and terrains. Those rivers are also ideal and popular spots for fly fishing.

Fly fishing uses a lightweight lure (not actually a fly) to catch mostly trout. It is made of feathers, fur, or other materials to mimic insects. Unlike traditional fishing, fly fishing relies on the weight of the line to cast the fly. It requires special equipment and skills, which makes it more of a sport than a hobby. The number one place to fly fish in the United States is the Madison River in Montana near Yellowstone National Park, but other popular places to fly fish are Alaska and, as mentioned, Colorado.

Finally, if you are headed near an ocean this summer, consider scuba diving or snorkeling. The Florida Keys off

southern Florida is known as the “Diving Capital of the World” due to the vibrant coral reefs, warm waters, and plentiful marine life. The Keys are popular diving and snorkeling spots in part because of the clear water and shallow water, allowing divers and snorkelers to experience the magnificent beauty.

Key Largo is the first key when driving south from Miami and is home to numerous dive shops. Some of the most popular sites for snorkeling and diving are Molasses Reef and the infamous Christ of the Abyss. The Christ of

the Abyss is a 9-foot bronze statue of Jesus Christ placed underwater that is visible to snorkelers and divers. The statue hosts a myriad colorful fish and coral. Besides diving, the Florida Keys are also known for the incredible deep-sea fishing for Yellow Tail Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and Blackfin Tuna.

Whether it's boating, jet skiing, fly fishing -- any kind of fishing, white water rafting, or just hanging out by the pool, it’s time to experience the open air. These activities aren’t just about fun—they are about connection to nature, to friends, to yourself. Summer’s heat demands you get outside, feel the spray of lake water, catch a few fish, encounter nature, but mostly, let loose. So, grab your shades, rally the crew, and hit the great outdoors. It’s waiting for you.

The plane is jam-packed, so of course the flight is delayed!  Suddenly a woman none of them know stands up and makes predictions about how and when everyone on board will die.  A few months later, one passenger dies exactly as she predicted. Then two more passengers die, again, as she said they would. Soon no one is thinking this is simply an entertaining story at a cocktail party. If you were told you only had a certain amount of time left to live, would you do things differently?

It is with great pleasure to announce the Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month as selected by the Celina Independent School District (CISD) Athletic Coaching Team. This month’s selection is Mia McDonald.

Mia is an incoming senior at Celina High School (CHS) and a member of the varsity track and cheer teams. Mia grew up playing softball, volleyball, tumbling, and even flag football but focuses on track and cheer now. She started running track in 3rd grade and ran for Celina until 5th grade, ran for Burner Nation, an organization out of Frisco for a year, and then stopped running outside of school. She started outside track again her freshman year with Burner Nation and has been doing it ever since. For the CHS track team, Mia runs 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and 200 m. She has been a state qualifier all three years, regional champ freshman and junior years, and is a part of the school record holding relay teams for the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400.

In addition to running track, Mia is also a base and tumbler on the varsity cheer team. Her favorite cheer moment came

Mia says, “I’ll forever be thankful for the family cheer and track has provided me. God gave me these amazing opportunities… My heart will forever be here in Celina, and I’m sad I only have a little bit of time left. I’m so thankful for everyone who has pushed me to be my best, and I’m so excited for my senior year!” After graduation, Mia hopes to attend either the University of Texas or the University of Florida and major in architecture and hopes to cheer as well! Congratulations to Mia McDonald and her selection as the June Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month!

LETTER TO MY Younger Self

Writing a letter to your younger self is a great exercise in reflection and self-compassion. It can be a way to offer advice, share memories, or simply express kindness. For our Men’s Issue, we asked four successful locals to share wisdom with their younger selves.

Dear Younger Self,

I know you’re fired up. You’ve got a vision, a plan, and enough drive to chase down every goal you set. That determination will take you far—but I need you to hear this: slow down. Be present. Life isn’t just about the wins; it’s about  how you get there.

In a few years, you’ll open the doors to your own law firm. Two months later, you’ll hand over the reins and roll into an operating room for a kidney transplant. Yeah—you read that right. With two toddlers at home and a brand-new business, you’ll have to face one of the scariest moments of your life. And in that storm, you’ll learn what really matters.

You’ll learn that asking for help doesn’t make you weak—it makes you human. That trust is more than a business strategy; it’s letting go when you have no other choice. That God’s peace shows up in the most unexpected ways, even when you’re terrified.

You’ll see your best friend step up and give you the gift of life. You’ll see your wife show up for you in ways that redefine love. And you’ll understand—deeply —that every hug from your kids, every quiet moment with family, every day you get to live and lead is a blessing, not a guarantee.

So keep working hard. Keep building. But don’t rush. Don’t miss the beauty in the small things. This journey is the point—not just the destination.

Love, Future Scott

DR. DAVID Jarquin

INDEPENDENCE CHIROPRACTIC

Dear Younger Me, Knowing you as well as I do, saying “study more”, “work harder”, or “take more risks” would be advice that would fall on deaf ears. Instead, my advice would be to change your perspective. It has taken us far too long to appreciate what we have rather than to compare ourselves to others. There is nothing wrong with being ambitious and wanting to improve yourself, but when it comes at the cost of happiness, it becomes hubris.

Believe it or not, a day will come when you feel as if all your prayers have been answered, you have a beautiful family, amazing friends, and a career that you love. Unfortunately, you’ll look back and realize that you never said “thank you” or showed gratitude to the people who helped you on your way. Look around at these moments in your life and the hardships of the journey, and appreciate not only the people who are there to love you and support you, but also give thanks to God for the blessings in your life.

When you learn to look at the world through the lens of gratitude as opposed to a lens of discontent, you are able to better appreciate the hardships and obstacles and enjoy the journey. In turn, you will study more, work harder, and take more risks because you not only enjoy and appreciate the process, but the reward becomes much greater!

Appreciation is not something you’ll learn quickly. It takes patience and discipline. It was not until I began to deepen my faith and explore my relationship with God that I learned how to truly be grateful and appreciative. With that being said, open your bible, go to church, and give thanks to your friends, your family, and God.

Love,  Future You

Dear Younger Me,

You are impulsive and a little obnoxious—and believe it or not, that’s going to work for you sometimes. Other times, it’ll land you in trouble. Learn to slow down. Listen. God placed people in your life who will speak truth and wisdom—just don’t wait until you’re 25 to start hearing them.

You won’t make the state track meet. Some friendships will end. Breakups will happen. But you’re going to be okay—I promise. Make mistakes. Learn from them. Own your failures, admit when you’re wrong, and grow from the experience.

A second-grade teacher will tell you that you won’t graduate from high school. She’s wrong. Your parents won’t believe her—and they won’t let you believe her either. Dyslexia will be tough. You’ll have to read things twice, sometimes three times. But you’ll figure it out. You’re smart, and no one will outwork you for the things you want.

You will graduate from Texas Tech with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree. You’ll earn a varsity letter at Tech in Cross Country and Track & Field. Soak up those days—the long miles, the friendships, the ups and downs. The good races and bad ones. Every single moment will shape you.

You’re lucky. You’ll find a career that you care about—one that makes you want to be better every single day. It won’t feel easy at first, but in time, you’ll find your stride. Stay true to who you are. That authenticity will be the thread that ties your whole life together.

One day, in your 30s, you’ll meet a woman who makes you want to be the best version of yourself. You’ll know it in the first ten minutes of the first date. Together, you’ll have a beautiful son—he will change your world completely. You’ll trade city life for a small town, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Love you buddy, Future Chase

P.S. The two dogs you get in your 20s— walk them as often as you can. They’ll carry you through some of your hardest and most formative years.

GRPR PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Dear Younger Me,

Above all else, remember this: only two decisions are truly eternal—to Whom you surrender your life in faith and with whom you share your life on this side of heaven. Everything else is seasonal. Life changes, and you can redirect. Not every detail is final. Relax. Be flexible.

Papa was right when he used to tell us, “Do not allow yourself to become upset by people or things; they are powerless. Your reaction is their only power.” Don’t let critics live rent-free in your head. They don’t deserve the real estate, your elevated blood pressure, or reactions you’ll regret.

Being a people pleaser is challenging, but God made you that way in His image. Embrace the positive—loving people better—while releasing the negative. Don’t take every critique so personally. People are imperfect, as are you. Love unconditionally and extend grace, even when it hurts.

Learn to laugh more with your family. When your children become teenagers, their lives and emotions grow complex. The joy and happy memories you invest early will earn you credit with them (and their mama) during their maturing years—when you’re no longer quite as cool or funny. And by the way, while disciplining them now is painful; it’s so worth it when they are world-changers.

Finally, keep developing a real, raw relationship with the Lord. As you age, you’ll face temptations to fit God into neat boxes. Don’t fall into the trap. He loves you radically at 50, just as He did at 20 or 30 before you “had it all figured out.” Later in life, He remains as faithful through your joy, brokenness, fear, and failures as He is now. Don’t let life or education or success keep you and the Lord from keeping it real with one another.

Oh, and don’t forget to call your Mom.  The relationship is so much sweeter, even now.

With love and grace, you knucklehead, Your Older Self

CIGAR LOUNGES

UNWIND WITH A PREMIUM CIGAR AND A FINELY PAIRED DRINK

In an era dominated by wellness trends, fitness tracking, and non-alcoholic spirits, the resurgence of cigar bars may seem like a surprising cultural twist. Yet cigar bars are experiencing a notable renaissance across urban centers and upscale communities. Once the haunt of old-school gentlemen and smoky backroom deals, these lounges are reimagined as stylish social spaces where aficionados and newcomers alike can unwind with a premium cigar and a finely paired drink. This evolving trend is more than just nostalgia - it’s a deliberate return to a slower, more tactile kind of luxury.

The concept of the cigar bar isn’t new. In the mid20th century, smoking lounges were fixtures in highend hotels, private clubs, and elite establishments. Cigar smoking, especially in Western cultures, was associated with celebration, power, and prestige. However, as public health awareness increased and anti-smoking legislation tightened, cigar bars saw a sharp decline in the 1990s and early 2000s. Smoking bans in restaurants and bars across the U.S., Canada, and much of Europe forced many of these lounges to shut their doors or pivot.

Yet, cigar smoking never entirely disappeared - it simply went underground. Private clubs, cigar societies, and home humidors preserved the tradition. What we’re seeing now is a return to form, but with a contemporary twist. Today’s cigar bars come in many flavors. Some maintain the traditional gentleman’s club aesthetic, with dark woods, leather upholstery, and classic decor. Others lean modern, blending sleek minimalism with tech-friendly touches like air purification systems and app-based membership management.

Drinks are a central part of the experience. Most cigar bars boast well-stocked bars featuring single malt scotches, small-batch bourbons, cognacs, and fortified wines—drinks that complement the cigar-smoking experience. In fact, pairing menus are increasingly common, with staff trained to recommend cigar and spirit combinations that bring out the best in both.

Many lounges also include retail sections, allowing patrons to purchase cigars to go, or to sample a stick before buying a box. Staff are often trained tobacconists, capable of guiding both novices and seasoned smokers through the selection process.

But modern consumers crave more than products - they seek immersive experiences. A cigar bar offers a curated atmosphere: leather chairs, dim lighting, jazz or blues humming in the background, and the smell of aged tobacco. For many, this is a welcome retreat from digital noise.

“The lounge is a cool place that feels private. There is no blaring music to drown out conversation. You can have upscale light bites and top-notch cocktails to complement your cigar, of course, but the star of the show is the company.”

“It’s the best way to relax. Mondays call for sophisticated cigars and a perfectly crafted Smoked Old Fashioned,” says Ashlyn Fajerson of Black Sheep Lounge on Main Street in Denison. The inviting atmosphere and staff create a comfortable environment for those new to cigars. “Nick is the cigar aficionado and Old Fashioned expert, but I’m trying to catch up as fast as I can,” continues Ashlyn. “There are many misconceptions about cigar bars. We don’t allow cigarettes, marijuana products, or vapes in the lounge - only quality cigars. And while we are motorcycle enthusiasts personally, the lounge is not a ‘biker bar.’ The vibe is comfortable and modern but upscale.”

Like fine wine, craft whiskey, or specialty coffee, cigars are being appreciated for their artistry. From Nicaraguan puros to Cuban classics, cigar culture is steeped in knowledge and nuance. Cigar bars often provide education, tastings, and cigar-rolling events, turning patrons into enthusiasts. Ash & Barrel, located on the square in downtown Sherman, raises the bar, pun intended. Owner Michael Smith notes, “We provide the finest cigars and liquor in Grayson County.” The sense of community and culture that emanates from connoisseurship draws people into these lounges. “Going on two years now, we provide a comfortable atmosphere where factory workers, doctors, and lawyers can come together and have something in common - a love of fine spirits and cigars.”

In a world where luxury is being redefined, cigars remain an enduring symbol of indulgence. Many high-end cigar bars now offer premium selections—rare vintages, limited editions, and personal lockers—appealing to a clientele that values exclusivity.

As the trend grows, innovation follows. Hybrid cigar bars and speakeasies, rooftop lounges with cigar-friendly patios, and even cigar barbershops and tailors are popping up.

The Silos in Celina has an elegant, speakeasy-style cigar lounge constructed inside a historic grain silo. Owner Michael Arani says, “When we were fleshing out the concept, I wanted something totally unique. Something that stood out as one-of-a-kind.”

Visitors to the Silos can experience for themselves the luxurious interior which is masculine and industrial yet modern and elegant. Reinforcing the cultural aspect of cigar lounges, Michael states, “The lounge is a cool place that feels private. There is no blaring music to drown out conversation. You can have upscale light bites and top-notch cocktails to complement your cigar, of course, but the star of the show is the company.”

There’s also a growing interest in inclusivity. Traditionally male-dominated, today’s cigar culture is increasingly welcoming to women and younger adults discovering the pleasures of the leaf. Brands and lounges are responding with more diverse marketing, events aimed at newcomers, and social media campaigns that blend tradition with trendiness.

The cigar bar trend may seem counterintuitive in a health-conscious world, but its appeal lies not in defiance but in distinction. These lounges offer something rare in modern life: time to slow down, savor, and connect. Whether you’re a seasoned smoker or just curious about the culture, stepping into a cigar bar is an invitation to experience a centuries-old ritual, updated for today’s discerning crowd.

COACH BILL ELLIOTT

The conclusion of the fall 2024 football season marked a significant achievement for the Celina Bobcats as they brought home the much-coveted State Championship trophy after a 17-year drought. Coach Bill Elliott, who is in his 32nd year as the head football coach and athletic director for the

Bobcats, has played a pivotal role in this success. As the team prepares for the 2025 season, we took the opportunity to ask Coach Elliott to reflect on this remarkable accomplishment.

“Winning the State Championship was an incredible achievement, but I cannot take full credit for it,” explains Coach Elliott. “I want everyone to understand that this victory is a collective effort—a team accomplishment, a staff accomplishment, and a community accomplishment. For every award I have received this year, I don’t view it as solely my accomplishment; it represents the hard work of the entire

team, all the coaches, and the community." He highlights the various parent and booster organizations that contributed, such as the Quarterback Club and Bobcat Moms, along with the support from the band, cheerleaders, and drill team. "It truly takes the entire community to foster the atmosphere of high expectations and success that exists in Celina."

Coach Elliott recounted how, as the state championship game at Texas Stadium came to a close, he turned to look into the stands and was met with the sight of 20,000 fans dressed in orange, white, and grey. It was an incredible scene; it felt like the

entire town had come out to support the team. Such overwhelming support is not something to take for granted, nor can it be manufactured overnight. It must be woven into the very fabric of the community.

Coach Elliott was honored with the G.A. Moore Coach of the Year Award by the North Texas Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) in March. This award is the highest recognition Coach Elliott has received in his career. Coach Moore has been a lifelong mentor to him, having introduced Coach Elliott to the FCA during his junior high years and encouraging him to attend FCA camp that summer. It was at this camp, in 8th grade, that Elliott accepted Christ as his Savior. He credits Coach Moore with showing him what it means to be a Christian man and has modeled much of his coaching style and parenting approach after the influence of Coach Moore.

This was the second year the G.A. Moore Coach of the Year award was presented. In its inaugural year, it was awarded to Coach Brian Brazil, one of the state's most renowned high school football coaches. Coach Brazil and Coach Elliott played football together at TCU, and he was a mentor and friend in the coaching world. “It was a special privilege to turn the trophy and see Brian's name above mine,” Coach Elliott explained.

Coach Elliott has been involved with the leadership of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) since he first started coaching. He is dedicated to sharing the message of Jesus Christ with his staff and student-athletes. His mission is to instill what he refers to as the “four pillars” in the lives of the young men around him. These pillars are excellence, empathy, integrity, and grit. He sets a high standard for character and work ethic within his teams, which has not

only led to years of strong football teams but also to generations of men who are valuable pillars in their communities, churches, and families.

The 2025 high school football season is just around the corner, and Coach Elliott, along with his staff and sons Nathan and Caleb Elliott, is busy with summer conditioning, team building, and game planning. The team is starting off strong with 25 returning lettermen, including quarterback Beau Bentley and linebacker/safety Luke Biagini. Coach Elliott explains, "These experiences build on one another. The 2024 team bought into everything we asked them to do. They worked hard and loved each other.

That establishes a solid foundation of effort and camaraderie for the 2025 team. I saw this with the back-to-back state wins in the 1990s."

If Coach Elliott has one soft spot, it’s his granddaughter, Ember. Nathan and his wife, Berkley, brought joy to the Elliott family by welcoming the first girl. Ember has her grandfather wrapped around her little finger, and he loves it when Berkley brings her to the office. He often jokes that she’s tall and is destined to be an athlete. You can hear the smile in his voice when he talks about her. Coach is eager to start the season and can’t wait to see Ember in her orange and white, cheering for the Bobcats.

BE AN

ANGEL

A Nonprofit Organization Whose Mission Is To Improve The Quality Of Life For Children With Special Needs

"Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.” - Psalm 27:3 NLT

Meet Be An Angel - where your village becomes their village. Over 38 years and counting… founded and created in 1986, Be An Angel is a place where special needs children, their families, and school districts can get the help and services that they need. Be An Angel is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children with special needs. Be An Angel provides adaptive equipment, hearing devices, select services, respite care, van conversions/lift systems, and much more. Caring for children ages 0-22 at no cost to the family, Be An Angel understands the challenges of special needs families and wants to provide hope!

With hope, Be An Angel longs to come alongside you and your family and provide the help that your special needs child may need. Since expanding to the DFW area in 2022, their mission has remained the same: meeting the needs and providing hope to physically and medically fragile children and their families through providing equipment, services, and programs to benefit their everyday lives. Children with special needs and their families can often be overlooked or unseen, but at Be An Angel, they are committed to serving their needs.

Be An Angel also provides memorable experiences for special needs children and their families, such as camp and other events. Camp is an opportunity where families can come together and give their child the best weekend ever. Camp Be An Angel caters specifically to special needs children and provides immersive experiences like fishing, horseback riding, archery, zip-lining, and more! Other events include Success Golf and the Christmas Giving Program. All are

ways to give these children an opportunity of a lifetime and to bridge the gap between societal difference and grace. At Be An Angel, there is grace, hope, love, and days ahead for a brighter future for special needs children and their families.

Another way Be An Angel provides care is through respite. Be An Angel’s respite care program provides support through background-checked, CPR-certified experienced caregivers, so that parents or legal guardians of special needs or medically fragile children can receive up to 12 hours of at-home respite care per month. To shed more light on respite care, a grandmother and her epileptic granddaughter were attending church together, and while being there, the grandmother noticed her granddaughter would have seizures during the service, which led the grandmother to stop going to church altogether. She contacted Be An Angel about their respite care. She was approved, and a special needs caregiver was provided to her to take care of her granddaughter for three hours. Now the grandmother can go to church, lunch, grocery shopping, and then back home to care for her granddaughter. The grandmother said, “I just want to go back to church. I need church,” and with the help of Be An Angel and their respite care program, the grandmother can do just that and more.

To the family with a special needs child looking for hope, give Be An Angel an opportunity to help. Be An Angel is a small enough organization where you can be seen, known, cared for, and be a part of a family. Be An Angel knows that it takes a village, so allow them to be a part of your village. Be An Angel also understands the frustrations, exhaustion, lack of hope, and cost of resources that it may take to care for a child with special needs. Be An Angel wants you to know that they are here

for you and ready to serve you, your child, and your family in any way that they can. It takes a village, and Be An Angel wants to be a part of your village!

Are you ready to get involved with Be An Angel? Or are you inspired by their story and desire to serve these families? Here is how you can get involved:

For those who have been inspired by the stories and are looking for ways to get involved and spread hope:  Volunteer and Donate! Be An Angel provides many opportunities for those looking to volunteer; their most popular outreach is their Christmas Program with school districts. Since Be An Angel is a nonprofit organization, they rely heavily on volunteers and greatly appreciate their volunteers. With donations and the generosity of a donor’s heart, Be An Angel can support more special needs children and their families. Interested in volunteering or giving? “Reach out to us, we want to help. We are going to make it as easy as possible. We are going to walk beside you. We do what we say we do. If you have one of these needs, give us a call.” - Denise Coffman, Director of Development for Be An Angel DFW

“BE AN ANGEL KNOWS THAT IT TAKES A VILLAGE, SO ALLOW THEM TO BE A PART OF YOUR VILLAGE. BE AN ANGEL ALSO UNDERSTANDS THE FRUSTRATIONS, EXHAUSTION, LACK OF HOPE, AND COST OF RESOURCES THAT IT MAY TAKE TO CARE FOR A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.”

WITH WEISZ SELECTION OUTDOOR LIVING SPECIALISTS, SPACES CRAFTED WITH PASSION AND PRECISION

DIVE IN THIS SUMMER

As North Texas prepares a warm welcome for summer this month, the excitement for longer days and time spent outdoors sets in. While many are just now turning their attention to their patios and lawns, Heather and Jason Weisz of Weisz Selection have already been busy, pouring their energy into turning ordinary backyards into showstopping personal retreats.

For the Weisz family, backyard living isn’t just about pools or patios—it’s about creating

That one-of-a-kind approach didn’t happen overnight. The Weisz story is a classic example of growth through grit and experience. Jason’s career began back in the 1980s, pushing a lawnmower through Texas yards. Over time, he expanded into landscaping and eventually discovered his passion for designing more comprehensive outdoor spaces.

This hands-on experience, built over decades, became the foundation of a com-

“I THINK THE UNIQUENESS [SETS US APART]…THERE’S NOT ONE OF OUR PROJECTS THAT’S THE SAME AS ANOTHER…WE’RE KIND OF IN A VERY CUSTOM NICHE,” HEATHER SAID.

full environments that feel like an extension of the home. Their vision has always been rooted in quality and individuality, offering something far beyond the standard swimming pool installation. Jason explained that the business was born from a desire to raise the bar in outdoor design.

“We started out trying to build the best pool that people could buy in the industry,” he said.

From the beginning, their focus was on excellence in craftsmanship and on delivering something truly unique in a market filled with repetition. Jason explained that the business was born from a desire to raise the bar in outdoor design.

“I think the uniqueness [sets us apart]… there's not one of our projects that’s the same as another…We're kind of in a very custom niche,” Heather said.

pany that today delivers full-scale outdoor living concepts. Weisz Selection not only designs these spaces, but it also brings them to life.

“I think that's one of the things that sets us apart, too, is that we're a one-stop shop…We do everything,” Heather said. “We look at the backyard and develop an overall concept and master plan, and we can complete all of it.”

Unlike many companies that outsource various aspects of a project, Weisz Selection handles everything in-house—from design to execution.

“Jason has an uncanny ability to walk into a backyard and listen to the customer's wants and incorporate all of the aspects or elements that the customer wants…creating it in a useful, beautiful [way],” Heather said.

Today’s homeowners are dreaming bigger than ever. Pools are just the beginning.

More clients are seeking complete outdoor living spaces, including kitchens, covered living areas, fire pits, and custom structures. Jason and Heather have fully embraced this shift through creativity and collaboration.

Jason leads the charge on the design side, while Heather keeps things running behind the scenes. Together, they’ve built a culture centered on collaboration and trust—and they’re quick to point out that their success is deeply tied to their team.

“We have an amazing team, so it's not just Jason and me,” Heather said. “We could not do it without our team.”

Clean, modern styles are in, with black-andwhite color schemes becoming a popular choice among clients. Multi-functional spaces are also in demand, with more homeowners asking for features like mother-in-law suites and dual-purpose structures for entertaining and everyday living.

“We like the uniqueness, the stuff that's different… that you don't see every day…that stands out and says, ‘Wow, that's stunning!'" Heather said.

One particularly popular feature right now is the “spool”—a hybrid spa and small heated pool that offers the best of both worlds. In areas where space is at a premium, spools provide the opportunity for both relaxation and exercise without the footprint of a full-sized pool. These compact solutions are a favorite among North Texas homeowners with smaller yards.

No matter the size or scope of the project, the Weisz team prides itself on attention to detail and unwavering transparency.

“[A] huge thing [is that] we don't go back to our homeowners with change orders unless they are really changing something,” Jason said. "We don't say, ‘Hey, we forgot to put this in there; forgot to put that in there.' ”

For Heather and Jason, what they do goes far beyond design or construction. It’s about crafting experiences—creating personal havens where memories can be made. With each project, they are reminded of why they started this journey in the first place.

“We get to do fun, unique things every day; no two projects are the same,” Heather said. “We're just grateful that we get to do what we do, and we have the team that we have.”

Weisz Selection’s office is located at 587 Marilee Road in Gunter, or online at weiszselection.com.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY

DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA

Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series, “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.”

Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether its the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life. So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime. Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estate-land, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot river. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed green “o hauses” that invite the outside world in.

WHERE TO STAY

Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-squarefeet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fire places and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent—ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).

For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a closeto-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.

Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-of-theart accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-em-from-thesky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.

WHAT TO DO

To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trails rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear— driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape—and bear witness to mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses.

HOW TO GET HERE

Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.
