Celina has always been known for its strong family ties, faith-based traditions, and of course that powerhouse Bobcat football team. But seeping into our fabric of life is a colorful, vibrant downtown filled with painted murals down alleyways and adorning buildings, boutiques filled with artful creations and local residents who are known artisans, musicians and craftsmen. The arts have always existed in our city but in the past couple of years have become more and more prominent. In this issue, we celebrate those artists who bring joy to our senses through their talents. In our Found Downtown this month, we introduce three local artists that maybe you have yet to meet. You might have seen their goods at local shops or heard their music in the downtown square. In this article, we learn who they are and what inspires them. We also have a chance to meet young artist, Peyton Hatcher, as well as the vivacious Meredith May of Color Wonder Balloons. But, even with a growing arts community, Celina football and family ties are still strong and that will never change. We have the opportunity to visit with newlywed Celina High School coaches, Berkley and Nathan Elliott, son of the Coach Elliott. As our city grows and changes, we hope some of the new excites you while the old inspires you. Cornerstone Ranch is a Christ-centered home and day program for adults with cognitive and/or developmental disabilities coming to the Celina area in the next few years. Located just outside of Celina, Cornerstone Ranch will consist of sixty acres arranged in a walkable village including six full-time residence houses, semi-independent living apartments, activity center, greenhouses, therapeutic riding center, sports fields, health & rec center, chapel,

and more. At full buildout, Cornerstone Ranch will host 60 full-time residents, “Ranchers”, and 70+ staff members providing 24-hour supervision. Cornerstone Ranch began in 1999 through the dreams of David and Cynthia Heaton. They had a vision for a community that would serve and provide enrichment for special needs adults after high school. After college graduation, the Heatons invited three young men with special needs into their home. As their family grew, they realized the needs exceeded their living space and purchased 42 acres and a large home in Mckinney. After renovations in 2006, the first residents moved in and the Heatons began 24-hour care and on-site programming. A short six years later, the Ranch opened a day program to serve an additional 45 families weekly. Today, Cornerstone Ranch seeks to create a safe place where independence thrives, character grows, and confidence is nurtured. Their mission is to empower special needs adults to live in Community, experience God’s creation and personal growth through therapeutic animal care and organic

gardening in Agriculture, in a Residential family-style setting that fosters safe and life-long relationships, while providing Enrichment for personal development and purpose (C.A.R.E). Ranchers are given the opportunity to experience abundant life through community involvement. Ranchers participate in activities like art class, ceramics, candle and card making, education classes, life skills training, daily exercise, community outreach, and more. Cornerstone Ranch centers its programming on six pillars: 1. Serving-Ranchers are encouraged to discover and grow in their giftedness through volunteering at local non-profits and participating in local church membership. 2. Developing Life Skills-Ranchers are challenged to reach their highest levels of independence in areas like grocery shopping, personal care, and meal prep. 3. Healthy Living-Cornerstone Ranch encourages healthy diets and daily exercise and sports. 4. Learning-Ranchers attend classes to further develop their math, reading, and health management skills. They attend daily devotionals and Bible studies focusing on living out Christian values. 5. Working-Vocational skills are developed through candle-making and jewelry projects. 6. Having Fun! “Moving to the Celina area is an intentional plan,” says Cornerstone Ranch’s Executive Director, David Heaton. “We are excited to be a part of something that has a strong sense of community and has a history of coming around and supporting people.” Cornerstone Ranch hopes to become a source of connection for Celina through participating in school and community events. “It’s important to integrate and serve in the community. Yes, we have a need for volunteers, but Cornerstone Ranch is coming to town with a mission to serve Celina, too. We have a 17-year proven test case from our time in the Mckinney location, and we hope our Ranchers will be invited to participate in Celina ISD sports, music programs, theater events, Friday Night Market, and all the other things that make Celina a special place to live.” Mr. Heaton says that Ranchers are encouraged to volunteer and are active in Meals on Wheels, preparing amenity packets for Streetside Showers, and serving in local churches. Cornerstone Ranch plans to provide not only full-time resident care and enrichment but also build a bridge between the special needs community and Celina as a whole. In honor of our February theme - Love Local - we catch up with Celina High School's newlywed coaches. Berkley and Nathan Elliott describe their meeting, wedding and their love for not only each other but also Celina.

HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET?

Berkley: I was working at Sweetwater High School for my first job and knew that I wanted to find a school to coach at, near the DFW area. I was searching the TGCA job board and was applying everywhere. That was until I had this feeling that I needed to refresh my page and go back to the page I had just moved from. After I did that, a Celina High School girls coaching job popped up on that page. It was not there before. So of course, knowing the reputation Celina has, I instantly sent in my application. Within a couple of days I was interviewing with Coach Ginger Murray, Kyle Sheridan and Coach Bill Elliott who I did not know would later become my father-in- law. During that interview, Bill may or may not have mentioned Nathan’s name to me and described what he was like. He was just being a good wingman at the end of the interview. So of course, in typical 23 year old fashion I looked him up on instagram, and he did the same. We ended up going on a date the first week that I lived here and the rest is history. Nathan: I first heard about Berkley after she had an interview with [my father] Bill. He was trying to be the ultimate wingman (guess I needed a lot of help). I looked her up on social media as well of course. I texted her on the day she was moving in and asked her if she needed any help, and I helped her put her couch together. We went out to eat after that and I knew from that day that she was the one.

TELL US ABOUT THE WEDDING.

The wedding was everything that we could have dreamed of. The day was so peaceful, and we were surrounded by everyone who loves us and celebrates us so well. We got married on July 14, 2023 in Aubrey, TX. It was a hot summer day of course, but it was still perfect. Everyone braved the heat to come witness our marriage and for that we are so grateful. We are very thankful that we have photos and our wedding video that we get to look back on because the day flew by so fast. We are so blessed by all the love and support we have gotten as we start our life together.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF BOTH WORKING FOR CELINA ISD?

Berkley: To me, the best part is how it doesn’t feel like a job. It is so much fun getting to randomly see my husband in the hallways, getting to do work things together and having the ability to understand each other’s work lives better. I genuinely can’t imagine not coaching at the same school with Nathan. Celina ISD embraces the family environment and I think that is so important in why Celina is so successful in all aspects. Everyone is treated like family here and that is a job worth holding onto whenever that happens. Nathan: Celina is very family-oriented, and it makes “work” a lot of fun. Coaching is a profession that takes a lot of time, but Berkley is right there in the same boat, and we get to steal time together while we are working. I couldn’t really imagine not working with her.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES IN TEN YEARS?

Ten years from now we will hopefully have a little football and softball player running around Celina. We both can’t imagine life without sports or the amazing athletes we get to be around, so we know coaching will still be in the picture for us. We see ourselves still bleeding orange

WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT CELINA?

Nathan: Celina will always have a special place in my heart because it’s where I grew up, and the community is hands down the best in the country. Even after living in different states across the country, no place compares to Celina, TX. It has become even more special now because it’s where I met Berkley and where we have started our lives together. Berkley: I was born and raised in Shallowater, a small town outside of Lubbock. Most people have no idea what Shallowater even is, but it is a huge part of me. I knew that I wanted to fly the coop from West Texas & find a small town up in the DFW area. Celina resembles my hometown in so many ways but I was drawn to the strong Christian community. From the moment I moved here, I have met some of the most incredible people. Celina is probably one of the most beautiful towns I’ve ever seen, and I knew from the moment I drove down Preston Road and saw the cattle, the trees, the town square, the water tower, that I was meant to be here. Shallowater will always be home to me, but Celina is where my favorite chapters of my life started.

“Seek peace and pursue it” Psalms 34:12, a verse that Ron Lyons embraces. In an era of negativity and pessimism, it is easy to get caught up in the bad, rather than the good. Ron Lyons is no different than others who have experienced this, and he recognized it was time for a positive change. Ron Lyons has always been involved with real estate, whether watching his mother as a thriving broker in the Dallas area, or as an agent himself in his early adulthood. And while he enjoyed the business, he felt like he needed to serve people more. This led him to law enforcement, the greatest way to serve, in Celina in 1993 then with a population of 1700 people. Ron worked for the Celina Police Department for three years before moving on to other law enforcement agencies. Shortly thereafter, on a standard police call, he realized it was time for another change...his weight. Ron found he was unable to keep up with the physical demands of the job and needed to lose weight. And did he! Ron became a local media darling as the “cop that lost so much weight.” As such, Ron made another career change this time training police officers in physical fitness. He owned gyms in Frisco, Prosper, and McKinney. Unfortunately, an accident sidelined Ron and his fitness career. He felt called to go back into real estate, but with a difference. In addition to helping people find their dream home, Ron helps clients buy the right home at the right price within their means. “My goal is the bigger picture, not just getting people the home they want, but also the long-term goal of making the right purchases by creating an investment as well.” It was during this time Ron met his wife, Crystal. Together, they’ve worked to create a new venture, Project Celina. Project Celina invests heavily in real estate projects, mostly in the downtown area. The goal is to revitalize downtown by turning dilapidated buildings into newer, more beautiful versions. “Crystal and I will spend hours pulling up carpet or tearing down

sheetrock,” says Ron. They have found some treasures like rare Chicago brick or marble fireplaces. The couple has future plans for these older buildings and houses. They will renovate them to be used as restaurants, wedding venues, office buildings, Airbnbs plus bed and breakfasts. Ron tries to “stay as local as much as we can,” he says. “We utilize Celina trades and contractors whenever possible,” Ron continues. It’s another way the Lyons impact Celina positively. Ron says, “I love Celina. I started here thirty years ago as a police officer. I believe in the vision of Celina. We want Celina to be amazing and that’s why we started Project Celina.” They have about fifteen projects currently. Look for the pink front door, their trademark color--positive, happy. But that’s not enough for Ron. He wanted to share stories about people in the community, so he created Celina Radio. His popular shows are unique, not typical podcasts, and entertaining. Ron says, “It is sometimes completely unexpected. It can be super serious but also hilarious too.” Ron also created “The Best of Celina” social media accounts. As simple as it seems, these accounts have become immensely popular as a positive alternative for social media users. He ensures the site is constructive, even on tough topics. Its popularity has helped it to grow to almost 10,000 followers in six months. Ron, Crystal, and their daughter, Reese, enjoy life in Celina. The couple will continue to focus on Project Celina real estate projects, tell the stories of Celina leaders on Celina Radio, and of course, promote the good on The Best of Celina. When asked if he would consider running for office in Celina, he replied, “I’m certainly not ruling that out at this time.” But for now, he has chosen to be optimistic, as it really does feel better for the community and for us all. “There aren’t a lot of groups that provide models of hard work, character and humility, combined with accountability, a common goal, and a common faith. Basketball, and more specifically, the Celina team, have been all of that and more for Ethan.”

Ethan Brownell is a senior at Celina High School (CHS) and a power forward and shooting guard on the Varsity Bobcat basketball team. Of all of the memories, the Edgewood tournament has been his favorite. With a two hour trip each way and three days back and forth, on the second night of the tournament after an 8 pm win, the team didn’t arrive back in Celina till almost 1:00 am. At this point the team was informed of their 5:00 am departure the next morning. The boys were all running on french fries and adrenaline, and the team came home with the championship with a one point margin in the final game!

In addition to CHS Basketball, Ethan has also played with Valor Basketball and Team United Texas Basketball (AAU). Ethan is also active in his church, volunteering in kids’ ministry and the Audio Visual team. When not involved in school or church activities, Ethan is working, playing video games or hanging out with family and friends. Ethan says, “God has placed teachers and coaches and mentors in my life, I am to honor and respect them and give my best effort in everything I do.” We know that Ethan will continue to live by this conviction, and we cannot wait to see what his future holds!

In his three years of playing basketball for the Bobcats, Ethan counts friendship and coaching as what he loves the most about playing.

On a spring day in 2022, Ryan McCoy broke a Celina High School [CHS] track record for the 200-meter dash that had been held by local resident, Marquin Hunn, since the early 1980s. Marquin, a member of the Miller family with deep Celina roots, graduated from Celina High School in 1984. That track record had become part of the family’s lore. Ryan, now a class of 2024 senior, has been close to her record setting pace of 25.68, but this is a sport where every second counts, and has not been able to pass it in subsequent track seasons. Her final race in 2023 finished just seconds off the pace at 26.37. Ryan set a goal to pass the record in her freshman year in high school and was surprised to achieve that goal in her sophomore year. She shares that setting a new record in 2024 would be amazing. These two ladies have much in common. Marquin was raised in Celina as part of an athletic family where her dad coached football, and her brothers played sports. She was involved in dance and music but had a natural gift for running. Ryan has also been raised as part of an athletic family in Celina, and while she loves running, her passion is really volleyball. Ryan has been part of Celina Volleyball teams that went as far as district competition in 2022, and only lost a game in the state championship round in 2023. Both ladies share a passion and love for the way the Celina community supports local kids to achieve. Discussing the passage of time with Marquin, she shares advice she would give to all Celina students whether in the arts or sports. If you are gifted with a special talent, hone that talent, nurture it, and allow God to guide you in using that gift to achieve all He has set for you.

Celina local Ed Haluska has been a woodworking hobbyist all his adult life. He started out by making wooden toys for his children. His interest blossomed into making small bowls, small bud vases, magnet signs, cutting boards, and wine balances that, after moving to Celina, led to a small woodworking workshop in his backyard. “I’ve always had a compelling need to be creating something, but since I have absolutely no artistic ability or musical ability…, I had to stick with…[being] an artisan,” Ed says.

Most of Ed’s work up to this point has been wooden crafts that he sells through craft shows or word of mouth in the area, but he will now be tapping into custom charcuterie boards after stumbling into a partnership with much-anticipated Celina restaurant, The Forge. Ed says he is often happy to donate his work to local silent auctions, fundraisers, and things of the like to engage in his community, so the anvil-shaped boards made specially for The Forge will be one of Ed’s contributions to his community that Celina can look forward to when the restaurant opens in the spring. Local musician Matthew Bell grew up around music and has always loved it. Although his love for music burned since childhood, he didn’t write his first song until after college. Once Matthew left the corporate world to pursue music, he started out by playing cover songs for gigs, but eventually wanted to start writing his own music. Matthew said that throughout his journey, he has learned that making music looks different in different seasons. “I want to do music for my whole life, not just this brief moment,” Matthew said. With his faith and family being his top priorities, he does not gig out often, but when his family can come to close-by gigs, he does.

However, this has allowed more time for writing and producing personally. “If there’s one musical aspiration I have, it would be to write songs, not just for myself, but for other people,” Matthew says. He just released his first worship single and is working on the beginning stages of a fulllength worship album. He says his goal is to get to people who can use it at other churches to help people grow in their faith and draw closer to the Lord in music. To check out his music, Matthew has releases on all streaming platforms under Matthew Bell for his solo releases and for his band Matthew Bell & the Next of Kin.

For the past 4 years, Erika Tolbert has been the woman behind the brush of Downtown Celina’s holiday window paintings on the Square. Erika went to school for art and after college, she worked in a photo studio and found herself painting backdrops in Muskogee, Oklahoma. One day, she decided to do a holiday painting on the windows of the studio. Much like Celina, Erika said Muskogee had a small-town feel where her window painting quickly drew attention and

took off. Eventually, her window painting got so busy that, during the holidays, that was the only thing she did. “It’s the one job where you show up, and everybody’s happy to see you,” Erika says. While she still does indoor mural work in homes and for businesses and commissions paintings throughout the year, holiday paintings are her full-time job from October through December. Many people say, “There’s just something really special about Celina.” Is it the location? The schools? Is it the land? The community? Obviously there must be something special if multiple generations of families continue to make Celina home.

O UR TOWN | L I FE + C ULT U RE

Family history is a sweet and personal thing. It is an honor and a blessing to have spent time with some very special people here in Celina: Jane Huddleston (you might recognize this family name gracing a building on the downtown square), her daughter Janet Calvert, and Janet’s kids, Katie Most and Jarratt Calvert. We gathered around Jane’s kitchen table and they shared a glimpse into the Celina they have known all their lives. Faith and family are very important pillars to Jane, Janet, Jarratt and Katie. With every part of our conversation, it was very clear that in addition to the family they were born into, they were part of a family within the community around them. Their community was the neighbors, friends made through church, business owners and staff, and classmates. This family community wasn’t fleeting; there were deep connections made and relationships continued through the generations. Many of Janet’s friends were the children of her parents’ friends and as they grew into adulthood, they chose to come back to Celina. The same dynamic has continued through to Katie and Jarratt’s generation, as they also have friends who share longtime family connections. The younger generation

is consciously choosing to surround their family in this way and build a community as they raise their children here as well. Katie and her family moved back to Celina in 2021. She shared that she had a longing to be back here. There was a tenderness and genuine joy in her voice as she spoke about her kids having time with their cousins and extended family regularly. Jarratt and his family, owners of Shades of Green Nursery + Landscape, returned to Celina in 2017 because they knew it was a great opportunity for their family. Katie and Jarratt live only a short distance from one another which in turn is only a few blocks from their dear grandmother’s home. Jane has lived on the same street here in town her whole life; which is only a few blocks from the square. Jane and her late husband, Billy Ray Huddleston, built their home between her parents’ and his parents' homes. They lovingly raised their four kids here. Imagine growing up with both sets of grandparents surrounding you, seeing all the big and small moments! That’s exactly what Janet’s childhood was like. Janet reflected about running between the homes and playing in the pasture. Janet said, “We never had a babysitter! Our babysitters were always family.”

Likewise, when it was time for Janet and Randy to raise their family, they were only a few blocks from the square and Janet’s parents and grandparents. Katie notes they spent time knowing their great grandparents because they were all in such close proximity. When they later relocated a bit further out of town, Katie and Jarratt still ran around the neighborhoods because everyone knew the kids and everyone kept an eye out for each other. This sentiment was shared by each generation. Then and now, “Celina takes care of its own.” Jane so simply and beautifully summed it up by saying, “If someone had a need, it would be filled by the next morning.” All four of them had big smiles on their faces as they shared memories of their friends throughout the years. Many of the personal anecdotes were followed by great laughter and many of these stories were memories made on or near the square. What some of us may not realize is the downtown square and surrounding blocks were a thriving heartbeat to the city for many years, even then. Everything that could be needed was there; Jane even had a flower shop downtown. Day were mentioned with fondness and again more laughter. The square is still a very special place to this family. Katie had just spent a day with friends and their kids on the square. “It makes me so happy to see young couples and young families on the square, having a meal, watching their kids play,” Jane said. Whether the population was several hundred or twenty thousand, this family has a special commonality through their education experiences here in Celina. They all attended Celina schools and are all CHS graduates. The current CISD Administration building on Colorado Street opened in 1943 as the school house. Jane began school here as a first grader noting that Kindergarten wasn’t required. She graduated in 1955 in a class of only sixteen students. Her daughter Janet also attended school in this same building but it was then separated into the north and south ends to divide the elementary and high school students. Janet graduated in Celina’s centennial year, 1976. Later, Katie and Jarratt spent their elementary years in that building but both attended high school at the “new” building located at the corner of Pecan and Preston Road. Their graduating classes were 64 and 86 students respectively. As they shared their memories of the school

on Colorado Street, there were lots of laughs and reminiscing about the classes and teachers. Janet later became a teacher and returned to teach in the building when her kids attended there. Jarratt is currently serving on the Celina ISD Board of Trustees. Knowing the history of Celina is important as this community grows. There is greatness in who and what was here, is here and will be coming here. Hearing stories of all the fond memories also gave glimpses into their personal values and perspectives of joy, grace and hope they each carry for Celina. Their family isn’t just the name they were born into, it is all those around them with whom they do life. Every generation made a conscious decision to get involved in this community. “Celina’s identity is strong, but it is a personal responsibility to maintain that,” said Jarratt. Hearing these words, while sitting with these generous people really impacted my heart. This family has been humbly making a difference in our community for generations whether it be in the classroom, as a business owner, on city council, or on the school board. All hard working people with a servant heart for the community. Therein lies our answer, it is the people that make Celina so special.

Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.

Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.

Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?

If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.

Lavender Vanilla Sugar Scrub This homemade sugar scrub is easy to make and leaves you with silk y soft skin INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup of granulated sugar • ½ cup of oil (almond oil or olive oil works best) • ½ teaspoon vitamin E oil • ½ teaspoon real vanilla extract • 15 drops lavender essential oil DIRECTIONS: Sugar scrubs are amazing for getting rid of dead skin and exfoliating to reveal soft skin. To make this Lavender Vanilla Sugar Scrub, mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight jar.
