Seek Adventure. Explore Life. Whether it be at home or away. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. For my family, escaping to the Rocky Mountains and spending time in our little log cabin is the reset we need each year. We love to explore new hiking trails and seek out glimpses of different animals. We unplug and just enjoy each other and our surroundings. For yours, it may be that annual family reunion at the beach or a road trip to explore a different state every year. But I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a new board game out on the patio, trying a new fitness class or going out to find a fun restaurant we've never been to before in a different part of town. Annie Jack boutique has you covered for your Spring/ Summer travels. Founding partner and Compass realtor, Lori Vaden, models Annie Jack's latest styles for the season and gives us a preview of Helping Hands of Celina's Teacher Fashion Show coming up April 23rd at Two 29 on the Square. “Omni PGA Frisco Resort offers a very unique, golf-driven experience, but combined with spa, dining, shopping and more – it’s truly unmatched for the local residents and resort guests,” Jeff says. Many activities and events already are planned for the new resort. Field Ranch will host 26 high-profile championships between now and 2034, starting with the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship this May 2023. Other events include the National Car Rental PGA Jr. League (beginning in 2023), the PGA of America Professional Championship (2024, 2030, 2033), KPMG Women's PGA Championship (2025, 2031), and the PGA Championship (2027, 2034). The hotel already has a substantial amount of group business booked as well, Jeff confirms. Omni PGA Frisco also will be home to a significant number of programming and events for local residents, including holiday experiences and a July Fourth weekend programming. Restaurants will host events, too. Jeff says a variety of additional events and activations will be announced closer to opening. Collin College Foundation is the non-profit fundraising division of Collin College with the mission of applying financial gifts to assist in providing access to high-quality education. The 35 year old foundation was established shortly after the creation of Collin College and has grown substantially over the years including the last academic year, the foundation raised over $2.6 million and awarded students over $900,000 in scholarships. Director of Development Andrea Mersiovsky is passionate about creating awareness of all Collin College has to offer. "Collin College is affordable and it is my job to help donors see that their money can make a difference. Whatever the community needs, Collin College is listening. We want to produce the next workforce and we want to help students become successful". One of her favorite donor stories includes a gentleman who desired to make an impact locally. His $50,000 gift allowed 30 students to attend Collin tuition-free for two semesters. He had the pleasure of meeting those 30 recipients at the annual scholarship ceremony honoring both donors and students. A nursing student, graduated and now in a NICU, reaches out to Andrea with notes and well-wishes for him. She attributes his gift to her ability to become a nurse. For her, his donation made all the difference.

Financial gifts are established to honor people and organizations with ties to the community, the college, education, and a desire to give back. There is a uniqueness to the gifts that can include tuition but also out of the box needs like child care assistance, shoes, or fees. Scholarships are personal for the donor. Andrea tells of a grandma who hoped for an alternative to contributing to her granddaughter's growing collection of toys so instead created a $500 Book Scholarship. Her 5 year old granddaughter is able to meet the student who benefits from the gift and a connection is made and a future donor is born. The scholarship application process for students is fairly simple and is available for the Spring and Fall semesters. Aside from the typical student details, applicants are asked to share their story including how they plan to give back and better the community. The scholarship review committee is looking to hear the heart of the student rather than a formula driven essay, and financial awards are not based solely on academic success or financial need. The Collin College Foundation will work with you to facilitate gifts of any size in memory of or tribute to your family, friends and colleagues. After years of driving through Celina, from their home in west Plano to their lake house on Lake Texoma, Tammie and her husband Mark developed a fondness for this community. They enjoyed the country feeling, wide open spaces, and slower pace of life. Tammie grew up in Mount Pleasant and has fond memories of her childhood which she wanted her own children to experience. West Plano was a great community, but with so much pressure and competition in the schools, Tammie wanted something different for her twins, Alex and Addie. Celina had the answers she and her family were seeking as the Celina schools were still small in 2015, but the town was growing and provided many opportunities where Tammie and her family could plug in. They started their move north by buying land in the area. Then five years ago, after building a home on that land, they officially made the move to Celina and Alex and Addie started their 4th grade year at O'Dell Elementary. Now, in the 8th grade at Moore Middle School, they are active in football, baseball, tennis, and Scouts. Tammie has a business philosophy of shopping local and serving local and she believes, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” She’s active in the Celina community and sponsors events such as the Celina Wine Crawl, Oktoberfest, Splash & Blast, and the city's Golf Tournament. She has also been an active board member on the Celina Education Foundation (CEF) and sponsors CEF's annual fundraising gala, Denim & Diamonds. While passionate about her community, she is also passionate about her business. Tammie has taken the leap and opened a second office located on the Celina Square. “We want to do more than just say we live in Celina; we want

to work here as well.” Tammie adds, “It will be nice to transition to meeting clients in our own offices downtown. We will be able to work with clients who are simply needing an IRA or a life insurance policy to those needing assistance with complex estate planning.” As a member of the Greater Celina Chamber of Commerce, Tammie is an active Chamber Ambassador attending monthly networking meetings, ribbon-cuttings, and grand openings of local businesses. She is also part of the Celina Ladies of Influence (CLOI) started by the Celina Chamber to help women-owned businesses in Celina find success. There are many obstacles when starting a new business and her vision is to help women learn to navigate these obstacles by way of networking, understanding the city requirements and resources, and formulating their business plan as the town continues to grow and change. Mahatma Gandhi is credited with saying, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Cody Paxman and his wife, Erica, exemplified this when they moved to Celina over two years ago. They knew the best way to get involved in the community was to serve the community, and they hit the ground running. The Paxmans own the State Farm Insurance Agency in Gunter and live in Celina. When looking for a place to relocate, the couple drove through many communities, but instantly knew Celina was the place. “We knew immediately when we drove around Celina,” Cody says. Following people’s suggestions, they stopped to eat BBQ in Downtown. As they were talking about how much they loved the community, people overheard the Paxmans and chimed in to encourage them to move to Celina. “It’s crazy how warm people are here. We loved it right away,” Cody continued.

It was that warmth that prompted Cody Paxman to give back to the Celina and Gunter communities. Right away, Cody contacted Gunter Independent School District (ISD) and created the Gunter Football Player of the Week award. Cody delivers a custom “Player of the Week” football after each game. He also provides breakfast for the football team, much to the enjoyment of the players. Cody was inspired to do more noting that Celina High School basketball would also benefit from recognition, so he created a Player of the Week award for basketball like his program in Gunter. Paxman promises to include this award for the girls’ basketball team next season. He says it is “another way to celebrate the kids and recognize their success to help grow the program.” Some of the most successful events Cody sponsored this past season was at the Celina basketball home games. He sponsored the “Half Court Shooting Contest”, a raffle contest with proceeds intended to aid the basketball program. The raffle winner attempts to shoot a basket from half court for a chance to win $100. It was great entertainment during half-time and brought in quite the crowd. Cody notes that the best part about one particular night was although the raffle money was supposed to help basketball, it ended up going to the family of a Celina student who was recovering from a serious car accident. Cody acknowledges that it is gratifying that “small things make a big difference.” The Paxmans don’t just help sports programs. Their most “pop”ular (pun intended) contribution is providing the popcorn for Movies on the Square in downtown Celina. They consider it a bonus for their family as their young toddler enjoys the movies too! This Spring, he will continue to sponsor and participate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt by the Gunter Library. Cody notes that the attendance

doubled from when the event started two years ago. It is his goal to help the Town of Gunter create more community events. The Paxmans have ambitious plans for the charitable future. Those plans include supporting baseball and softball programs, plus a significant event for teachers in August when its back-to-school time. They believe there is ample opportunity to help local teachers in Gunter and Celina, a group that would value the assistance greatly. Cody considers one of the greatest perks of owning his own insurance business is that it allows him to be involved in the community and give back to the place that provides so much for his own family. “It’s my favorite part of having the business," notes Cody. “It has given us a great opportunity to meet kids, coaches, teachers, and community leaders.” Cody and Erica Paxman are hardly lost, but definitely understand that losing yourself in service is the only way to win. Celina Star Café is known for its delicious traditional breakfast and lunch meals with menu items like Oreo Pancakes, Mexican Skillet, and savory sandwich wraps. But what you may not know about this local favorite, is the true “Coming to America” story of the Mehmedi Family, including Driton “Toni” Mehmedi, Celina Star Café owner. The Mehmedi Family originated in Albania but settled in Kercove, Macedonia, north of Greece, east of Albania as part of the group of countries known as the Western Balkans. The country is poor with many of its citizens desiring for the land of opportunity with hopes of immigrating to the United States. Sami Mehmedi made his hopes a reality. Sami left his homeland with no money and first moved to New York. There he worked odd jobs to save money. Soon after, he returned to Europe to marry his wife, Anna, with the goal of coming back to the United States. The couple returned to America with literally nothing, joining relatives in Belvidere, Illinois. While there, Sami worked at restaurants saving money to eventually open his own restaurant. Here Sami taught his son, Toni, how to cook and save money, plus build a strong work ethic. To make ends meet, Sami also worked in the trucking business resulting in many nights away from home. Toni missed his dad and pleaded with Sami to open a restaurant together as a family. So, at the suggestion of family friends who lived in Frisco, the Mehmedi family decided to relocate to Texas. Toni graduated high school early and moved to Texas in 2016. Together with his parents

and uncle, the family became business partners opening a restaurant in Frisco. Just as the Frisco café started to prosper, the building landlord notified Toni about another building in Celina. Toni knew Celina was a booming town, so he gave his portion of the Frisco restaurant to his uncle and created Celina Star Café. Toni recounts how it was a rough start as so many other restaurants opened in Celina at the same time, but he credits the people of Celina for making it successful. “It is definitely a blessing,” Toni says. “Now a few years later, we are thinking of a second location in Celina or Gunter with a brunch, a trendy breakfast vibe,” he continues. When eating at the café, you will notice many members of the Mehmedi family work together. Toni’s Mom “runs the show”, his Dad often assists the cooks while his sisters help with hostess duties and general management. His uncle, Sinan Vllasaliu, a famous Albanian pop singer, sold the Frisco restaurant to become a partner with Toni in Celina. “He comes to Celina to relax from his celebrity-life in Europe,” Toni divulges. Having family at work plus spending time with them after work is what drives Toni. He creates restaurants that focus on breakfast and lunch, to ensure no family disruptions during the day. Obviously, the family is very close and misses their relatives in Macedonia. While they try to go home every summer, Toni realizes it can be hard with the restaurant schedule. He misses the beauty of Albania and the beautiful, mountainous countryside in Macedonia. Nonetheless, Celina is now Toni’s hometown as well as his parents’ who are now US citizens. Toni’s ambition is all because of his family’s accomplishments in America. “It’s great here, especially in Texas because of the opportunities,” he says. “We love Celina because they support us a lot. I bought a house here and I want to keep my roots here,” he said. No doubt Toni Mehmedi will continue to thrive just like his relatives and family have before him.

Group Provides Shoes And Hope In The Amazon Jungle Region Of Ecuador

Just as the dawn of this new year emerged, a group of eight men from Celina left on January 21st for an extreme mission trip deep into the jungle near the Amazon River in Ecuador. Their purpose was to serve the Huaorani people of the region, a tribe made famous by the 2005 film End of the Spear. Joining a dozen other men, most from North Texas, the group partnered with Happy Feet Missions, an Alabama-based organization that provides shoes and a message of hope to children and their families in developing nations. Many of the children served by the group had never owned a pair of shoes, and one of the river villages the Celina men visited had never welcomed Americans. “There are no words to describe the joy our team experienced as we traveled from village to village gifting shoes and sharing the hope of the Gospel of Christ with the wonderful people from that region,” said Celina resident and team member Chuck Hansen, who serves on the Celina I.S.D. School Board. “Often the people we think of in remote parts of the world as possessing nothing are truly the ones who possess more than we could ever imagine. Their gratitude was authentic; their joy was contagious,” Hansen said.

Along with Hansen, Celina residents Adam Crum, Oliver Grabbe, Dusty Hutson, John Huse, Kyle Robinson, Marc Rylander, and Clay Thomas participated in this South American work. Serving in villages with no roads or vehicles, the group used small propeller planes with no instrumentation to reach their base in Toñampare, the village where American missionaries Jim Elliot and Nate Saint were speared to death in 1956. During the week, the team journeyed by motorized canoes up and down the river for hours visiting villages. On Thursday, the men were supposed to depart the jungle, but their plan was thwarted by rain. During their unplanned time in the village, a group of older women and small children, who were said to have walked some nine hours just to meet Americans, showed up unannounced. The Celina men were able to gift the group with shoes and present the Gospel message to the weary travelers. The joy of that transformational moment removed the stress of upended travel plans. Despite the muddy conditions, planes were able to land on Friday so the men could return to the capital city of Quito for a red-eye flight back to North Texas on Saturday, January 28th. CONTINUED >

“Traveling by canoes to the villages and meeting the sweet Huaorani people of that region made such a lasting impact on our team’s lives,” said Celina Bobcats Assistant Coach Dusty Hutson. Sleeping in tents in a jungle village without electricity or plumbing and being covered in bug bites only added to the memorable experience of the group. "Abandoning the comforts of life in North Texas and experiencing how so much of the world lives gave our team an unbelievably eye-opening and impactful week of memories that undeniably changed our lives. Through every moment of the trip, our own faith was stretched and strengthened, even as we shared that gift of faith and fitted feet with shoes,” Hutson said. After seven days, the group members were back home in Celina with their families. Along with volumes of stories and photos, gifts from the villagers were shared among family members here. Among the items were a handmade wooden machete, spears and blow guns made by tribal leaders, jewelry and dinnerware made by women in the area, and a necklace containing the tusks of dozens of wild pigs presented by a tribal leader. While the items carry with them great stories and a lifetime of memories, the eight Celina men would all agree that, in their hearts, the eternal impact of the trip is embedded forever. LIFE CON NECTED. SERV ICE DAY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY The City of Celina kicks-off its inaugural Life Connected. Service Day on April 22nd. Drawing inspiration from Texas A&M University’s “Big Event” which has become the nation’s largest oneday student-run service project, the City of Celina hopes to inspire positive physical and social change within the Celina community. This event is a one-day service project that seeks to unite residents who need assistance with home maintenance and repairs with volunteer groups who wish to provide assistance to their community. Residents with needs register their projects online and Jade Mizzell, Life Connected Manager, will review the feasibility of accomplishing the tasks. Jade envisions flower bed prep and planting, mowing, cleaning gutters, fence repair, or debris removal. Typical jobs that will take approximately four hours to complete and are on the outside of the home. Residents commit to providing the tools and resources necessary to complete the projects and to be present at the workday. The Life Connected Service Day can only be successful with volunteers. Grab your Girl Scout Troop, neighbors,

motorcycle club, or any other combination of hard-workers, and register to serve your community. Volunteers are encouraged to indicate what type of project you would like to participate in. On the Life Connected Service Day, pack up your tools and prepare to connect with your group and those in the community you serve and meet Jade and her team at the downtown pavilion for t-shirts and breakfast. After a brief safety training volunteers will meet with their assigned resident and get to work. The City of Celina, through their Life Connected initiative, is committed to transforming and enhancing our community through acts of service and opportunities to build relationships with our neighbors.
