Danielle Poche | Danielle.Poche@citylifestyle.com
I don’t know about you, but this time of year I love indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. Our Love Local issue is always one of my favorites. Here at Celina Lifestyle, like Holly says, "we love love!" We have so many unique and local choices to help us celebrate or find that perfect gift that is just a heartbeat away. A Valentine’s Day date out or a cozy night at home? Buy a handcrafted one-of-a-kind present or cook a memorable dinner? There are so many opportunities to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you with just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our local community. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. Soak in the beauty that surrounds us whether it be a winter sunset or a colorful mural on our downtown square. “Love local” means our local businesses, those in our community - but it also means loving those under your own roof. So grab a coffee at 1418 Coffee and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Valley Vines and some hummus from Toasted Walnut and indulge in a movie night at home. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. This month, check out some local couples like Michelle and Paul Kuhar of Champion Waste & Recycling Services who run thriving households as well as successful businesses in Better Together on page 22. Also, meet Eve and Steve Henry of Eve Henry Homes and learn how they have created the perfect recipe for success. Our hope is that we inspire you to love life locally just a bit more than you did before. Thank you for reading, and we'll see you around town!

The Henry Family
MEET EVE HENRY LOCAL REALTOR AND MOM LOOKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN HER COMMUNITY
ARTICLE BY CHRISTINE CLARK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
18
O PE N H OU SE | R EAL ESTATE
Who do you know that has six children- teenage through young adult? Who also runs their own successful real estate business, and yet still finds time to serve in her church and community? This special person is Eve Henry. She is a wife, mom, business owner, and resident of the Prosper community. I recently had the opportunity to talk with Eve and learn more about how she manages it all with a sense of ease and flair. The more we talked, the more I learned. Eve and Steve, her husband of 22 years and a former chef, moved to North Texas from the Atlanta area in 2016. It didn’t take them long to discover the many things that they love about this area. Prosper had a similar sense of community, family-oriented activities, and conservative values that both Eve and Steve loved in their early years in Atlanta. Within a few months of relocating to Prosper, they were actively involved in their kids’ schools and sporting events. They found themselves connected to a growing network of friends who have become like family.
Eve Henry
Eve has always been in the real estate business. Her parents owned a brokerage in the Atlanta area allowing her to cut her teeth in the business. She always liked it and knew early on that she would follow her family’s legacy. As her own family grew, the flexibility that the real estate business allowed became even more important to her. She and Steve now own their own business Eve Henry Homes with Monument Realty. They specialize in luxury properties and land for custom-built homes. Steve excels at meeting with clients, showing homes, and walking land with prospective buyers and sellers; while Eve has a head for contracts, negotiating deals, and managing the backend steps to complete successful transactions. This successful partnership is key to keeping all the balls in the air and allowing them to rarely miss a game, a concert, or an activity for their children. Eve has some tried and true tips for managing the busy schedule of her family and business. The Henry family has a master family schedule. Everyone includes their activities, work schedules, and games on the calendar. This helps manage cars, carpool, and meal planning. Once the calendar is laid out, each member submits five things they would like to have for meals (tacos, spaghetti, etc.). When everyone’s favorite meals are overlaid with the schedule, a 30-day meal plan is created. Just imagine knowing what is for dinner for the next 30 days! Spend time with Eve and you will clearly see that she is enthusiastic about her community and the North Texas area. While she loves the "small-town feel" of both Proper and Celina, she is also quick to discern, and has a healthy awareness, that smart, moderated, and well-planned growth is critical to both communities. Eve recently announced that she is running for the Prosper ISD School Board in the upcoming election. The Prosper school district overlaps four communities including Prosper, Celina, Frisco, McKinney, and includes unincorporated parts of Collin and Denton counties. With such a broad footprint, her real estate business and vast knowledge of the local area make her uniquely qualified to listen to and represent all of these communities and unincorporated areas. Also with four children still in the Prosper schools, active involvement with Prosper ISD PTA, the Prosper Ladies Association, and her church as well as a wide network of local friends, she has a great start. On the go all the time, Eve looks forward to enjoying coffee with new residents and catching up with old friends at the new 1418 Coffee in downtown Prosper - Living and learning how she can best make a difference in their schools and their lives.

BETTER TOGETHER The Glendennings Photo by Holly Farrow Photography
MEET THESE COUPLES WHO ARE PARTNERS IN LIFE AND IN BUSINESS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA HATCHER
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED? We just celebrated our 39th Anniversary.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER? Teamwork and building our real estate business together. We have been in business since 1987. It has been very rewarding and also very challenging at times. We both have our own unique perspectives and feel we are pretty good at balancing each other’s opinions not only in our business but also in our daily life.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO OTHER COUPLES THAT ARE CONSIDERING WORKING TOGETHER? Be patient and when you go home, try to leave business at the office. It doesn’t always work out that way, but we try!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL DATE SPOT? We gravitate to our ranch and the fireplace on the porch but do enjoy Gloria’s in Prosper for a margarita and Mexican food! RexRealEstate.com

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED? We celebrated 28 years on November 19th.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER? We get to share in our dream together. So many couples (us included) had different careers which added to the complexity and rat race of life. Now, we have one dream together so we get to work with each other on one dream or as many as we can come up with. We also complement each other’s strengths.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO OTHER COUPLES THAT ARE CONSIDERING WORKING TOGETHER? We are led by the Lord together in marriage so prayer is very important. Communication, compromise, and a plan worked on together are also important. If both members of the couple are not 100% “in” then we would suggest finding something that both of you are “in” on. Teamwork makes the dream work.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL DATE SPOT? We don’t go on too many “dates” these days. However, we usually enjoy a good cocktail (or two) and belly up to the bar somewhere to grab a bite to eat. It is important for us to reflect on the day’s or week’s successes and then dream about the future while enjoying the drinks and food. TerramaniaShop.com

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED? 26 years this month (2/27)
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER? We think the best part of working together is that we are working on the same goal collectively. Furthermore, we are able to leverage each other’s strengths.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO OTHER COUPLES THAT ARE CONSIDERING WORKING TOGETHER? After seven years of working together, we have learned communication is essential. You are working with your toughest critic and at the same time your biggest fan. It’s important to find a way to not constantly talk about the business and not kill one another. (wink)

WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER? We are there for each other, through the good and the bad times. We truly understand what each other is going through. We are each other’s biggest cheerleaders and each other’s voice of reason when needed. We don’t sugarcoat, we tell each other like it is (like it or not).
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO OTHER COUPLES THAT ARE CONSIDERING WORKING TOGETHER? You have to be able to separate work from home and home from work. You have to be able to have fun together and be able to work under pressure together.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER? We love that we get to spend a lot more time together. We also feel like it has made us closer because the business is a big part of our lives that we get to share now.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO OTHER COUPLES THAT ARE CONSIDERING WORKING TOGETHER? Our advice would be to know when to keep business and personal life separate. For example, we don’t talk about business when we are out on dates.

MEET THE MAKERS CELEBR ATING OUR LOCAL ARTISANS
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER HAVEMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOLLY FARROW
John Lubbock once said, “ Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colours flowers, so does art colour life.” Art allows us an appreciation for what is and what can be in our lives. Local art honors the values of our community while delighting our senses. Local artists create one-of-a-kind pieces that exhibit the beauty of our community. Celebrating and supporting our local craftsmen and craftswomen allows us the opportunity to view and own unique pieces that make Celina the beautiful city it is. The opportunities to observe art in Celina abound - from the downtown murals to vendors’ art at Friday Night Markets. This month, as we celebrate our local community, it seems only natural to show our appreciation for those that help make Celina more beautiful - our local makers. These artists create beautiful, custom art from a variety of media from paintings to leather to woodwork. With great pleasure, we introduce you to a few of Celina’s own local artists. Meet Julie Cook of Julie Cook Designs, Thomas Hall of T.C. Hall Leather, and Collin Vaclavik of Callum East Design.
JULIE COOK JULIE COOK DESIGNS
Julie Cook of Julie Cook Designs has been a resident of Celina for 16 years. She started her business painting murals 24 years ago after graduating from college with a graphic design degree. Upon moving to Celina, Julie noticed that no one had sports signs in their yards and decided to change that. She wants every child to boast about their accomplishments! What started as a custom hand-painted yard sign business has grown to so much more. Julie now works with clients to create whatever they can dream up together in addition to yard signs. She has also partnered with several local businesses to create one-of-a-kind signage.

CALLUM EAST DESIGN
Thomas Hall, the craftsman behind T.C. Hall Leather, works with luxury Italian leather to create custom wallets, watch straps, belts, and more. Thomas started working with leather in 2019 because it combined his love of design, photography, teaching, and writing, so he took a leap of faith into full-time small business ownership. He sources his materials from the best Tuscan tanneries and uses the traditional saddle-stitch technique to sew his lifetime-guaranteed products by hand. When you purchase from T.C. Hall Leather, you are supporting not only him but other artisans who care deeply about what they put into the world.
Collin Vaclavik of Callum East Design began building furniture as a pre-med student in 2010. Over time, his work has grown to include commercial finish-out work and residential remodels as well as custom furniture. Callum East Design recently expanded to a second location in Celina and serves clients all over the United States. Collin works closely with builders, architects, and designers to create unique pieces for his clients that blend modern designs with real materials. In addition to building with Callum East Design, Collin is also an owner of Thrown Axe Company in Celina and is an active volunteer with several local groups with his wife and five children.

LIVING LOVE OUT LOUD Eddie & Jennifer Cawlfield
Jennifer And Eddie Cawlfield On Love, Family, And Service ARTICLE BY NIKI CARBAJAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE WIERICK PHOTOGRAPHY
32
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
LOVE What brings two people together and what keeps them together? Is it a warm feeling when he smiles at you? Or knowing she will laugh at your jokes? Just ask Eddie and Jennifer Cawlfield. No strangers to love and marriage, the Cawlfields are both native Texans and met while working together at a physician-recruiting firm in the early 2000's. Work travel and social happy hours and eventually a newly-established recruiting firm drew Jennifer and Eddie together as friends. Jennifer found that Eddie made her laugh and Eddie discovered Jennifer to be sharp, driven, and her own brand of funny. For Eddie, marriage wasn't a priority until he met Jennifer. He says he would've been a terrible spouse before meeting her. He came to realize he would be "lucky to get to be married to her because she's just good stuff". Married in 2008, they realized it was the perfect time for Eddie to pursue his dream of attending law school. He enrolled in 2011 and they began the journey of studying, working, parenting, and all the things people juggle along the way.
FAMILY Eddie and Jennifer have three children. Charlotte, 13, is outgoing, kind, helpful, and motivated. CJ, 11, is logical, smart, has a funny, dry wit, and loves all things computers. Jennifer says he is the "best part of the Oreo". Eight-yearold Chloe is driven and competitive, is attracted to those who need a champion and, as Eddie says, "is truly, a funny human and she lives for an audience". Jennifer acknowledges she was a better parent before actually having children. According to her, Eddie is the fun parent and she is the disciplinarian. A funny example: Eddie doesn't force food choices but Jennifer once chased CJ around the house with corn on
a fork to get him to try something new. Determination runs strong in this family. The Cawlfields work hard to provide opportunities for the kids to problem-solve. Eddie's stance is that it's not necessarily the problems that are at issue but how you solve them. Creating memories and traditions is important, too. Sunday dinners at the table with just the Cawlfield Five and an annual ski trip to Bend, Oregon, where Jennifer skied with her family as a child, are events Eddie and Jennifer build into their calendars. They enjoy traveling as a family and hope to make a few trips with just the two of them. Regular date nights are on the goal list, too. Conscious decisions to stay connected are important.
SERVICE Jennifer co-founded Helping Hands of Celina (HHoC) to help CISD students with clothing, shoes, and hygiene needs. Jennifer saw the importance of volunteering through her own mom's service and now Jennifer tries to be present in her children's school. She claims to be "The World's Okay-est Room Mom" but anyone that knows Jennifer can refute that. Her desire to support Celina ISD educators is evident in "The Teacher Fashion Show" hosted by HHoC on April 16 this year. Teachers strut the catwalk in clothing and accessories from Annie Jack, Willow House, The Twisted Trail and Honeysuckle Rose Boutique. The $20 event ticket helps support the $13,000 in Amazon gift cards given to full-time teachers in the district. For more info, see HelpingHandsOfCelina.com. Eddie and Jennifer live by and understand that some people need help. Jennifer says, "There are people in need, and we are on this earth to help them." volunteering at church, or Jennifer and the kids sorting items for the clothes closets, they work together for the well-being of the community.
ADVICE Eddie has wise words to share: "Whatever you think life is going to look like, it's probably not. It's not like the movies. Life is going to take you down some different paths; slow down and do your best while life is happening. I love this life. I would love a magic wand to cure Jennifer's cancer but it has become a part of the scenery of our lives." Jennifer adds, "If you can, marry

your best friend, the person who makes you laugh. Marry the person you want your future kids to grow up to be. My mom said 'go for the nerds' and Eddie fit the bill." Marriage is a relationship in which two people love deeper the more they get to know each other. The mountains and valleys of life show us some days aren’t as exciting as the honeymoon phase. But because marriage is a lifelong relationship, we can make the daily commitment to love our spouses— strengths, struggles, and all. These commitments spill over into family and serving the community and these are the things, the love, the Cawlfields live out loud.

Together with his teammates Leroy and Birdie, Albert must master his magical talents in time to stop the fires in the Calderon Realm from destroying New York City above.

MURDER COMPLEX DUOLOGY (grades 8-12) Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. ZENITH: THE ANDROMA SAGA (grades 9-12) Known across the galaxy as the Bloody Baroness, Captain Androma Racella and her motley crew of space-bound privateers roam the Mirabel galaxy on the glass starship Marauder, taking what mercenary work they can find to stay alive. When a routine job goes awry, the Marauder’s all-girl crew find themselves placed at the mercy of a dangerous bounty hunter from Andi’s past. Coerced into a life-threatening mission, and straight into the path of a shadowy ruler bent on revenge, Andi and her crew will either restore order to the ship—or start a war that will devour worlds.
"Later, Andi strapped the swords across her back and climbed out her bedroom window. She snuck out into the night, feeling for all the world like a nameless ghost."
BLOOD, METAL, BONE (grades 9-12) Wrongly accused of her brother’s murder, Sonara’s destiny was to die, sentenced to execution by her own mother. Punished and left for dead, the shadows have cursed her with a second life as a Shadowblood, cast out and hunted by society for her demonlike powers. KATHERINE CLARK-FREDRICK, OWNER OF FREDRICK INSURANCE BROKERS, INTRODUCES US TO THE HOTTEST LOCAL CRAZE
G E T AC T IV E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON
Did you know that one of the fastest-growing sports in the country is also one of the most popular sports in Celina? It’s pickleball, a new craze for all ages. Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with a 34-inch-high net. Players use paddles, twice the size of ping-pong paddles, to hit the plastic ball. It can be played inside or out, easy to learn, and is recreational or competitive. According to USA Pickleball, in 2021 there were about 4.8 million players in the United States, a 15% jump from 2020. About 600 of those are Celina residents and includes Katherine Clark-Fredrick, a specialized Health insurance broker and owner of Fredrick Insurance Brokers, who plays pickleball in Celina at least three times a week. Katherine says she first heard of pickleball on the Celina Pickleball Facebook page. She knew nothing about the sport and decided to attend an Open Play night. Katherine was immediately hooked, joined a league, and is “100% committed". She likes that it’s not too strenuous on a body, gets you moving and “your endorphins going,” part of the reason she loves to play.
A PASSION FOR PICKLEBALL
If you think pickleball players are mostly an older crowd, you are wrong. A misperception is that “older folks” play, but in Celina the ages range from 25 years old to 80, states ClarkFredrick. USA Pickleball verifies the average participant’s age is 38 years old. "It doesn’t matter your background or age, when we are on the court, we all have the same goal – to hit that stupid ball,” asserts Katherine laughingly. Furthermore, Katherine maintains it’s the best-kept secret in Celina. The camaraderie is much more than playing, it’s the socializing also. She could play in any city, but it’s the people and old-fashioned values that draw her here. It’s also bonding at local downtown restaurants before and after games or participating in Celina’s many festivals. “Celina Pickleball is a thriving community. We would love it to grow more,” she says. Brenda Graves, a Celina Pickleball organizer, agrees. While there are over 600 Celina residents who currently play, there are also another 300 or so playing in Celina from the surrounding cities. The league has about seven current men’s and women’s leagues that play almost every night. Wednesday nights are devoted to Open Play where beginners come and learn how to play. Katherine Clark-Fredrick brags some of Texas' highest-ranked players are from Celina. Celina Pickleball also hosts numerous tournaments including the Celina Bang Bang Tournament and Midnight Madness Tournament. One event, according to Katherine, was sponsored by the National Professional Pickleball Association with over 200 hundred people in attendance and a media presence as well. Katherine Clark-Fredrick is a committed fan of Celina Pickleball. When she is not playing pickleball, she devotes her time as a specialized insurance broker with Fredrick Insurance Brokers focusing on private health insurance for individuals, small businesses, the self-employed,
Katherine Clark and John Fredrick, mother and son team at Fredrick Insurance Brokers
teachers and realtors. She states she is "an advocate for my clients; selling the policy is only the first step." Katherine enjoys working with the people of Celina to help find their right policy. She tries to be a resource for her clients in navigating the world of medical care. "It's not just about selling a policy" for her. She says it is gratifying to help people get a better, more affordable health plan and to know how to leverage it. "This isn't something people do every day and they don't really want to learn the industry. We pride ourselves on educating and empowering our clients. Our goal is to improve folks' situations and sometimes we just validate that they are in the best place they can be!" You can join Katherine, Brenda Graves, and others every Wednesday night for Celina’s Open Play nights. The courts are located at Founders Station Park in downtown Celina. Look for the newly resurfaced courts courtesy of Celina’s Park and Recreation Department too! CELINA FINE ARTS BOARD Keeping Arts And Culture Alive In Celina
ARTICLE BY BRIAN BENDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOLLY FARROW AND PROVIDED
Arts and culture are coming to Celina. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve always had Arts and Culture here, but with the formation of the Celina Fine Arts Board, the arts and a bigger focus on our culture will be a key part of City growth. The City Council decided on creating a Fine Arts Board back in 2020, but it wasn’t until September of this year that they decided to make it official. Made up of a 7-member panel, including myself, the Fine Arts Board has several local artists and individuals who have a background in visual and fine arts. Like any other city board or committee, we will meet regularly to discuss and develop initiatives to bring more art and culture to Celina. But what does that mean? Art and culture? I know we’ve all seen the various murals on

the Square. It’s quite the photo opportunity. We have quite a bit of Celina culture infused into our City life with our new Heritage Festival, the annual Oktoberfest, and our local Cinco de Mayo celebrations. We are very proud of our history and traditions and plan to build on this foundation. In November 2022, we had our first board meeting followed by an open meeting where we invited the community to tell us what they want to see as far as art and culture in Celina. Some of the ideas and concepts: a performing arts center; more community art pieces to include statues, memorials and installation art; Shakespeare in the Park; outdoor music and concerts like Symphony on the Square; and an art in the park program featuring local artists.

Arts within cities contribute to a more vibrant and enjoyable community for all and, believe it or not, contribute to economic growth. Communities benefit from arts organizations by stimulating business and economic growth. Participating in public art generates excitement, which leads to more foot traffic, which helps nearby businesses. It is amazing how art can transform any region into a tourist destination of choice. A large part of this is due to the wide appeal of art. Whether you're a senior or a child, everyone can learn from and engage with art. The tourism industry depends on more than 100,000 nonprofit arts and culture organizations every day. Why not add Celina to that list? Keeping art alive in our society means passing it down to the next generation. Students learn, grow, and create at art centers across the country through classes, programs, and summer camps. Studies have even shown that children who get an art education have higher GPAs, better test scores, and fewer dropouts. Embracing children's creativity gives them the tools to succeed in life. Enacting a Fine Arts Board is one of the most important things the city can do for the community. We are extremely excited to begin the planning process for the Celina Fine Arts Board and look forward to seeing what the future holds. In fact, we’ve even thought of changing the name of the board to better reflect our focus- Arts and Culture. By doing so, we would be able to open up the board to more art activities than just the “fine” arts. In the end, this will lead to more support and awareness of the board and the city as a whole. Please feel free to share your ideas with the Fine Arts Board as we begin this process. We want to make sure that we are creating the best Fine Arts Board for the Celina community because it’s not just about the seven of us on the Board, it is about every Celina resident and every Celina family. Thank you Brian Bender, a local resident and member of the Fine Arts Board, for your editorial submission. If you have an article for editorial consideration, please send to Barbara.Ireland@CityLifestyle.com

9 WAYS T O O R G A N I Z E A N D I N J E C T S T Y L E I N T O YO U R S PAC E
ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.
50

A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
01
Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY
ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR
02
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE
03
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION
04
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
05
The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

06
BAG & SHOE STOR AGE
Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

53
LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.
08 M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

WORKING FROM HOME BECAME THE NORM IN 2020, AND FOR MANY, THE HOME OFFICE REMAINS A PRIMARY WORKSPACE. Laura Christian, owner of Laura Design and Co. offers some advice this month on how to turn what may have at one time been a part-time office space into a full-time, stylish and sophisticated work dwelling. “For some, this state of working from home will be permanent. It is a different time we are living in, so we might as well embrace what we can control - our homes. We have the unique opportunity at this time to make our work space our own, and make us truly want to spend time in it,” Laura says.

Choose a color palette. “I like to stick with neutral paint colors as a jumping off point. Then bring in colors through artwork, accessories, window treatments and rugs,” Laura says.
Chose a desk wisely. “Think about your personality and the way you work. Do you need more drawers and storage or do you prefer a more minimal, clutter-free work space? This will make the decision on what type of desk to purchase. In many cases, less is more,” she says. CONTINUED > FEBR UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / C E L I N A

Create balance. “Like so many other things in life, design is all about finding balance,” Laura says. “Create a balance between textiles, wood finishes, stone, colors, natural elements, finishes and accessories.”

Incorporate art. “Use oversized artwork as a backdrop for those long zoom calls. It will not only look beautiful, but professional as well,” Laura says. “We are big fans of neutral, abstract landscape artwork, especially pieces that have a calming aesthetic to them.”
Make it personal. “Do not forget to include personal touches here and there – family photos, favorite books, etc. They serve as little reminders of the things that bring you joy,” she says.

Follow Laura’s tips below to style perfectly balanced bookshelves.
+ Start with a clean slate. Begin by emptying everything off of your shelves so that you have a fresh look at them. Consider your room and color palette. Is the cabinetry backing dark, light, or open? This should affect how you select you styling elements … If the cabinetry is dark, you want to select lighter pieces in order to obtain that contrast. Are you wanting to keep it neutral or add bold colors and patterns to your decor? You can organize your items by category prior to placing them on your shelves. Overall, you want to keep a cohesive look throughout the shelves. + Gather varied items. Only use items that you love. You want these things to make you happy when you look at them. I personally like to use baskets, greenery, geometric objects, pottery/vases, books, bookends, jars, artwork, frames, candles and wood trays. I also love incorporating personal items that have a unique value and interest to you. For example, nick-knacks, or souvenirs from past travels, personal photos of a memorable occasion, or collectibles that mean something special to your family. + Ground your shelves. I usually start by placing a set of large baskets or trays on the bottom shelf. This really helps it feel more substantial, weighted, and connected at the base of your shelves. + Style from largest to smallest. The next step is incorporating the large items first and spreading them out over your shelves so they are not right next to each other. Then, fill in the remaining shelves with the smaller items. Here's one of our best tricks: if it feels like something is missing, add some greenery (faux works too!). + Create that necessary depth. You can do this through the use of artwork or trays stacked against the back wall. Make sure items that are similar to each other are not right next to one another. It is all about balance. Steak And Scallops Steve Henry, Realtor With Eve Henry Homes And A Former Chef, Shares His Favorite Valentine Recipe Tenderloin steak and delicate scallops seared in butter and finished with lemon zest, white wine, garlic and fresh basil
INGREDIENTS: • 10 ounces beef tenderloin steaks (2 five-ounce average), 1 ½ inch thick • 1 teaspoon sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 Tablespoons butter • 4 ounces sea scallops, rinsed and patted dry (about six scallops) • *Asparagus can be roasted as a perfect side*
SAUCE • • • • • • • • • •
2 Tablespoons EVOO ¼ cup finely chopped green onions 3 large garlic cloves, minced ¼ cup dry white wine 3 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons fresh basil (cut into strips) 1 tablespoon minced parsley ¼ teaspoon lemon zest Dash of hot pepper sauce (Can be omitted)
• Sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS: 01. Season steaks with salt and pepper. In a 10 to 12-inch skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat until hot and bubbly (more can be added, if needed). Add steaks to skillet and brown on one side for 4 to 5 minutes. (At this point, begin the sauce in another small, nonreactive skillet.) 02. Turn the steaks on end and rotate to brown the sides (this will take about 3 minutes), then turn over to brown the final side for 4 to 5 minutes. 03. When turning the steak to brown the last side, add scallops to the skillet to brown at the same time, about 2 minutes on each side. 04. *If making the roasted asparagus, now is a good time to slide it under the broiler for 10 minutes.

05. To make the sauce in a separate skillet, sauté onion and garlic in 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until fragrant. Add wine and lemon juice; simmer to reduce slightly, 1-2 minutes. Add 3 tablespoons butter and stir until melted into the sauce. If the steak and scallops are not yet done, slide the sauce off heat until they are ready. 06. Once the scallops are browned on each side, stir the fresh basil, parsley, lemon zest, and hot pepper sauce into the sauce. 07. Reduce heat to low, add the scallops, spooning the sauce over the scallops. Once the steaks reach an internal temperature of 125°F (the rare side of medium-rare), add to the pan with the sauce and spoon sauce over the steaks. 08. Divide the steaks and scallops evenly between two plates and serve immediately, spooning more sauce over both the scallops and the steak.
