An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives. My Daddy, 95 years young, has always been a role model for me. He was raised on a farm near the Panhandle but raised 4 city-dwellers of his own in the heart of Dallas. He has seen and experienced more than I can imagine in the last almost century of life. He leads an understated quiet life as if back on that farm where he was raised. I have learned over the years that he helped many, quietly, not wanting any recognition but just wanting to offer a hand up. He inspires me to try to be the same for others in my community. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men like my Dad who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. In our feature editorial, Movers and Shakers, meet five unique men who are impacting our community in different ways. They are all as passionate about what they do as they are about the betterment of our city. We also sit down with legendary Punk Carter this month and learn more about this Celina inspiration. And our very own Bryan Poche' of Poche’ Construction Group shares his favorite spots to grab the best Dude Food in town. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. Joe East Enterprises, Inc. will open the very first Browning Safe Showroom and upon completion will be the largest of its kind in Texas. PUNK CARTER : A LEGENDARY COWBOY THAT CELINA IS FORTUNATE TO CALL OUR OWN

A TRUE TEXAS TREASURE Cowboys, Westerns, and riding horses are trendy again in American culture. Celina has its own real cowboy, Punk Carter. Punk Carter is anything but trendy, rather a legendary horseman. If you have spent any time in Celina, you’ve probably heard of Punk Carter, but you may not know his story. Exactly who is Punk Carter and why is he so important to Celina? Punk (short for “Punkin’”, a childhood nickname thanks to his daddy) is a well-known horseman specializing in cutting horse training, roping horse training and basic horsemanship. What is cutting horses exactly? According to the National Cutting Horses Association (NCHA), cutting horse means the act of separating one cow from a herd of cattle. Through the years, better horses and riders made it an elite competitive sport. Born in Sherman, Texas, Punk found himself attending thirteen different schools including Pilot Point and Celina. His Dad, finding better jobs, required many moves during his school years. Punk’s family settled in Celina during his junior year in high school. Celina is where Carter met his wife, Rita, a native of Prosper. They married just after high school and Punk continued to follow in his dad’s footsteps. At the time Punk was already training, showing and selling horses

ready for competition. The Carters eventually made Celina their home and Punk continued cutting horse training and his involvement with the NCHA. Punk gained national and international recognition for his expertise. His reputation grew and he has trained people from almost every state and at last count, they have welcomed visitors from 23 countries to their property. He is proud to say some that he taught have won prestigious events like “Australia’s Greatest Horseman” and “Road to The Horse.” His years of training and successes resulted in Punk’s induction into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the NCHA’s Member Hall of Fame. Furthermore, he has judged prestigious competitions like the “Road to the Horse” contest from the famous 6666 Ranch. Punk said he was “very fortunate and blessed” to be a judge. Punk donates his training services to fundraisers by working with celebrities who jump at the chance to be trained by Punk, making his coaching quite popular. Some of the celebrities that he has trained at the ranch include Christie Brinkley, Forrie J Smith of Yellowstone fame (and friend for over forty years), former Dallas Cowboy Randy White, Ed Sheeran, Jon Pardi and Tanya Tucker.

A life like Punk’s might change a person, but he is unassuming and modest. It’s Rita that talks about his achievements as Punk would rather tell you about his daughters’ records and high school cutter horse championships. Furthermore, he puts more value in helping others like getting front row seats to American Idol for a cancer patient or housing horses of hurricane victims. It's that community spirit that Punk likes about Celina. He enjoys seeing new families moving here, “good people keeping the town’s traditions”. Punk and his family continue the business now in its sixth generation. The Carter’s are celebrating 57 years of marriage enjoying their time with daughters, Colleen, Cassye, and Caimey, plus six grandchildren and (almost) seven great-grandchildren. Though well known for their quality pizzas, local dudes know to order the tacos on the side. Chago's Tacos are corn tortillas with mozzarella, chicken, bacon, green & red pepper, and onions, topped with parmesan and ranch dressing. Visit Jimbo's and get your Chago's Tacos with a side of friendly small town atmosphere. Bongo Beaux's Bourre Palace & Cajun Kitchen 218 W Walnut St, Celina A weekend is never complete, without a stop at Bongo Beaux's. The Chicken Fried Steak is a crispy 8oz chicken fried steak on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and topped with chef Joey Dawkin's jalapeño, brisket gravy. Ohhh Lawd is this good! Served with a greek salad on the side to give you that healthy edge. Tender Smokehouse 224 W Pecan St, Celina No Dude Food list is complete without an entry from Tender Smokehouse. Our Foodie likes to go big or go home by ordering the El Jefe. This is a specialty sandwich loaded with prime brisket, pulled pork, smoked sausage and a scoop of Tender's signature beans and because that just isn't enough - a spare rib on top. A cold draft beer and banana pudding round out the perfect meal. The Nook CKMC 1230 Homestead Ct, Celina Poche' might have saved the best for last. Burgers are always a dude food favorite but The Border Burger at The Nook CKMC is in a class by itself. This burger is a half pound Angus beef patty topped with jalapeño, cheddar cheese, avocado, chipotle ranch, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. Followed with a side of fries and all is right in this dude's world.

FINALIZE YOUR DESIGN BEFORE PROJECT BEGINS. It can be very expensive to make changes once the process has begun. You may want to consult with a kitchen designer or space planner to help with the layout, cabinet design etc. SELECT ALL OF YOUR MATERIALS IN ADVANCE! With the supply chain delays – you can help speed up the process by selecting and ordering your materials in advance. PACK UP ALL OF THE CONTENTS IN CABINETRY AND PANTRY. Make sure to set aside items you will need on a regular basis. Plates, silverware, glassware, dry foods. SET UP A SPACE FOR YOUR “TEMPORARY” KITCHEN! You will want to have make shift kitchen during your remodel. Find a place for refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave, and pantry items. You may also want to think about where you will wash your dishes. Once demo is done – you will also be without a dishwasher. DO YOU HAVE PETS? Think about how you will keep them safe and out of the way of construction. CHECK WITH YOUR CONTRACTOR ABOUT WHETHER THEY WILL BE USING OIL BASED PAINTS DURING THE PROCESS. This month we are celebrating a variety of influential men that are having an impact on our community. These local Movers & Shakers exude innovation, entrepreneurship, pride, and creativity, We’ll introduce you to each of these men, all as passionate about what they do as they are about Celina. They come from a variety of industries and backgrounds and we will share even more about each in the coming months. There was no shortage of men who came to mind when putting this feature together. We only wish we could include more.

Rex Glendenning Broker / Owner of REX Real Estate

Rex Glendenning is synonymous with real estate in Celina. Sometimes referred to as “Mr. Celina”, Rex is the fourth generation in his family to live in Celina. Rex and his wife, Sherese, started REX Real Estate thirty-five years ago during the savings and loan crisis in the late 1980’s. Rex and Sherese worked through this difficult time to build their business and establish it as “the leader in the North Texas commercial/investment real estate market.” Rex has many passions outside of work like ranching and working his Longhorn Cattle. He attributes his successful real estate business with allowing him the flexibility to enjoy his ranch and spend time with his family. He feels like he can really decompress when driving through his ranch with his dogs by his side. As a long-time broker in Celina, Rex is excited for the future of his beloved town. He believes Celina is positioned to see some of the same quality of mixed use developments and single-family master planned projects as Frisco did with both The Star project and Starwood, which he helped bring to fruition. He cites REX Real Estate’s involvement with the new Legacy Hills project as an exciting example. In addition, the partnership with the City of Celina and his family’s land holdings for a new mixed-use master planned development we currently call “Glendenning Ranch”, is now becoming a reality after years of patience and planning. When asked what the best life advice Rex has ever received, he has a simple but profound answer: Be thankful for every day you have and try to make the most out of your life. Furthermore, he believes in the end, God, family, and friends are what matter the most. Other than being a chef, Joey Dawkins cannot imagine any career other than what he has now. Joey says that being a chef is literally everything he is and is earned and tied to personal growth. Joey’s desire for growth and improving himself is how he stays content in life. Joey began his life in the restaurant industry in 2013. He was working a sales job but felt unsatisfied and unfulfilled. Joey had a “come to Jesus” talk with himself and decided he needed to make a change. It was then he remembered his happiest times were as simple as flipping burgers and cooking fries. Thus, he pursued his career as a chef and never looked back. Today, Joey is the Owner / Chef of Toasted Walnut Table and Market. A chef’s life is obviously busy with long hours. Ask Joey how he keeps his life balanced, and he responds he is living his best life by working a career he loves, one he chose. Because of that, his life is balanced. Joey likens his life to one of a fairytale. He is at peace interacting with people and enjoying his passion for food. In his downtime, Joey has found a new hobby playing the drums. He surprised himself by how much he would like the drums. He likes it so much that he is hoping to purchase a drum set to continue learning how to play and make it a bigger interest. Given his many talents as a chef, it is certain his musical abilities are not far behind.

Ryan Griffin Managing Partner of Rockhill Capital & Investments

In 2009, Ryan Griffin and his business partners, Clay Thomas and Brett Brantley, took a calculated risk at the tail end of the recession. After having spent years overseeing the construction management of many subdivisions across North Texas, they saw an opportunity to start their own real estate development company. With luck and hard work, their gamble paid off. Many years later with the help of a dedicated and talented team, they run one of the leading real estate development companies in North Texas, spearheading a number of residential and mixed-use projects including the much anticipated residential community, Uptown Celina. A self-described “people person” with an outgoing personality, working with others and helping solve problems together is a key aspect of Ryan’s

role of guiding the firm in its acquisition and developement of real estate projects. No day is the same, which suits Ryan well. While many of his friends joke he should be a politician, Ryan says being a managing partner at Rockhill is what he enjoys and is meant to do. Having a thriving business can be all consuming. Ryan likes to travel as a way to relax and disconnect from work, and enjoys getting together with his family and friends in Celina the most. Having grown up in Frisco, Ryan is amazed still to this day by the amount of growth that is occuring in North Texas, especially Celina. Ryan and the Rockhill team are proud to have a small hand in shaping the local community and look forward to many years of continued prosperity for Celina.

Anthony Morel

Owner of The Nook CKMC and Owner of Graffiti Pasta

When Anthony Morel was sixteen, he probably didn’t realize his part-time job at Campisi’s Italian Restaurant would become his career. He was just trying to earn money to pay for a car. Since he liked Italian food, he thought it would be a good job and instantly was hooked on the service industry. We know Anthony for his restaurant The Nook CKMC, located in Light Farms, but he is just getting started. Anthony recently opened his second place in Denton called Graffiti Pasta. Graffiti Pasta is a restaurant and bar that serves creative pasta bowls, Italian street food and specialty themed cocktails. In addition, Anthony also just signed a lease in the Huddleston building on the Square in downtown Celina. Anthony spent a good amount of time in his career as a high volume bartender at some of DFW’s hottest bars and restaurants and plans to open an elevated cocktail bar with an eclectic menu and vibrant nightlife. Most of the details he is keeping secret for now but is very

excited to create something the community and his neighbors will enjoy. With three businesses and crazy hours, how does Anthony keep his work and personal life in-sync? He admits it is hard as so much could go wrong so quickly. But on the rare occasion when he does have time to disconnect, he likes to spend time with his wife, Sara, and their “fur babies”, Tortellini & Cotufa. The dogs are a perfect way to keep him balanced and distract him from work. Lastly, he also uses music to help him relax as he was once in a band for over twenty years. He still “jams” from time to time allowing him to get completely lost while playing music. To keep himself focused and motivated with his many projects, Anthony remembers a good piece of advice: Take risks and always bet on yourself because if you don’t believe in yourself, why would anyone else believe in you? This is a bet Anthony is sure to win.

Celina City Council Member and Managing Partner of The UPS Store

Andy Hopkins average day as the owner of the UPS Store in Celina is non-stop, constantly helping people with their printing and shipping needs. While his staff “keeps things grooving right along”, Andy enjoys engaging with customers the most. He loves learning about his customers and how he can help them, or welcoming newcomers to town and telling them all about the great things Celina has to offer. It’s his favorite part of the job. Andy credits his dad for suggesting he research franchising a UPS store. It was something he never envisioned he would do for a career, but believes it is God’s blessing. Andy is also very active in the community as a member of the Celina City Council. Having a successful business plus his involvement in Celina activities make it challenging to have a balanced life. Andy states that being married to his best friend helps. He and his wife love to visit the great places around town as one way to unplug and have fun together. They own three Wheaten Terriers who provide constant entertainment and laughs. The Hops also like to travel and have almost accomplished their goal to visit all 50 states together. Andy remembers the words of his sergeant while in the Army: “Hopkins, this ain’t no walk in the park.” He taught him to work hard, keep his head down and do his job. Above all, Andy learned to have a strong work ethic as well as serve and care for others. When you visit with Andy at the UPS Store, you know he loves his job and interacting with people. Preston Trails Rotary Club Brings Patriotism And Scholarships To The Celina Area With Flag Program ARTICLE BY WENDIE WIGGINTON

Nothing says freedom more than the red, white, and blue of an American flag waving in our North Texas winds. If you drive through our neighborhoods around our national holidays, you will see many beautiful symbols of patriotism that got there thanks to the Preston Trails Rotary Club. Founded in 2008, Preston Trails Rotary Club serves the communities of Celina and Gunter. As current president Ron Perry describes it, “there is nothing more beautiful to me than a flag blowing in the wind." Preston Trails Rotary currently puts up almost 700 flags every holiday with the help of local Cub, Boy, and Girl Scouts from Frontier Parkway in the south all the way to the northern Gunter border. Growing at a rate of 100 new flag deliveries per year, David Werner and his rotary team are busy inspecting, repairing, and making sure that all delivered flags are on straight poles and clean. The goal of the group is to have flags up at every home and business in Celina. But what makes this all even more special is what they have been able to do with the money raised by the flag subscriptions. Preston Trails Rotary takes the money they raise in subscription fees and turns that into scholarships that they award to deserving Gunter/ Celina area seniors to cover fees and tuition of students planning to study at Collin College Celina Campus. In 2022, they were able to provide more than $9,600 in scholarships to local students. It is Ron’s hope that as our population grows, the flag program will continue to grow to help even more students in the future.
