LIFESTYLE LETTER
Home Sweet Home "The light is what guides you home, the warmth is what keeps you there." Ellie Rodriguez Home. A place of retreat, rest, love, and shelter. It can be your house, your hometown, or even just an overall sense of belonging. When I first moved to Celina five years ago, I had an immediate feeling of Home. The warmth of the people, the energy on the Square, and the traditions from the schools to the playing fields, all came together to provide me and my family a source of comfort and ease. I always joke that I wasn't born in Celina, but I got here as fast as I could! Since making this our home, my husband, Roger, and I have started working on our house, a seemingly never-ending project. With big dreams yet a small budget, we have compiled lists and ideas of how we'd love to update our house. Luckily, March is our Home and Design Issue. In this year's Home issue, we travel with local designer, Trisha Puente, owner of Humble Home Designs, down to Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco, Texas. She guides us through shopping for specially curated home goods and how to update our homes with the newest trends by using her expert design tips. Back at home in Celina, we learn about the Celina Friends of the Garden and how we can help them grow. We also learn from resident expert, Brian Dyer, about harnessing solar energy and if your house is a good fit for these popular trending solar panels. And the epitome of Home is Mayor Sean Terry. He invites us into his life and shares a little bit of why he chose Celina as home. I remind myself that the memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn't been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful houses and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. I hope this issue leaves you inspired to create the home of your dreams. But remember, Celina is your home and home is where the heart is. As always, thank you for reading and we'll see you around town!

We are lucky to have some amazing local shops for home goods and accessories but if you're feeling like a day away, just head south on 35 until you hit Waco. Magnolia Market, owned by TV personalities Chip and Joanna Gaines, offers retail stores with a large array of furniture, decor, and everything else your design heart desires. We asked local designer Trisha Puente, owner of Humble Home Designs, to share her expertise in creating a fresh space in your home. Trisha takes us through the Shops at the Silos and shares two of her favorite trends of the year.
Colordrunk Maximalism
TRISHA PUENTE, OF HUMBLE HOME DESIGNS, SHOPS MAGNOLIA MARKET
This trend is anything but basic. Think bold plays on colors, the use of textures and patterns, and lots of it. It is the opposite of minimalism so get ready to express your personality. Trisha suggests using bright, vivid wallpaper or adding pops of color with textiles. Magenta is the color in fashion right now so she looks forward to using it in homes. Other rich colors like emerald greens, deep dark blues, mustard and black are often used with this style. Beyond decor, Trisha plans to tie this trend into her remodels by using colorful patterned tiles, rich tone cabinets, eclectic light fixtures and bright painted feature walls. She offers the example of a powder bath remodel by painting the walls emerald green, black paint on the vanity, a crisp white quartz countertop, black and white patterned tile on the floor and finish with brushed brass light fixtures, mirrors and hardware. Colordrunk Maximalism is all about breaking the rules and having fun. Out with the "less is more" and in with the "more is more."

Natural and organic design style puts an emphasis on deep, earthy colors and it marries man-made elements and the natural world. Think soft curved lines on furniture and natural wood tones. Trisha brings this trend into her designs by using Scandinavian style furnishings, natural dried stems and natural wood decor. She suggests the use of ivory, sage, olive and gold toned textiles. For remodels, partner soft, natural paint colors with light wood stain on floors, cabinets, doors and trim. This trend brings in soft muted finishes. Think ivories and beiges over stark whites and grays.Trisha's example of Natural & Organic in a kitchen makeover is to stain cabinets in a light, natural wood color. Paint the island a subtle blue/ green, use an ivory countertop with hints of greige, a light greige backsplash and earthy wood pendent lighting. This style is good for homeowners who seek peace and nature with their surroundings.
About Our Expert
Trisha started her company with a focus on interior design but has since added her husband Daniel to her team. He brings his construction knowledge and background to expand the business into remodels. Their goal is to grow the business and one day have a design studio in the downtown Celina area. Trisha and Daniel have lived in Celina since 2011 and they have four children, ages ranging from two to 18 years old. Family keeps Trisha busy but her passion for design drives her. She would love to help you in any aspect of decorating you need. Whether it's a full remodel you're looking for or you just need help shopping and accessorizing, Trisha is ready to help. Nothing excites her more than walking into a space with her clients for the first time after a redesign, and experiencing genuine excitement with them. LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE
Spending time with Celina Mayor Sean Terry and his wife, Angie Terry, is easy. Time flies as you talk with them about their family and the city they call home. The mayor is downto-earth and speaks about Celina with great pride. We ask him about his motivations, his blessings, and his life.
WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED? I was born at Sheppard Air Force Base in Witchita Falls. My dad Mike was in the air force and that’s where he and my mom, Sheryl, were living at the time. My dad got out of the air force and became a coach and teacher, ultimately retiring as a high school superintendent. I graduated from Gunter High School in 1991 and received a full football scholarship to Texas A&M. My parents have been married for 50 years and set the example of family for me and my brother Scot.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CELINA? Growing up, everybody knew that when you wanted to find someone, you'd meet at the "gathering place", the Square in Celina. I knew after I graduated from college in 1995, I wanted to raise a family here. Celina has always had the hometown feel with great Friday night football and even greater people. We have worked hard over the years to keep the Square alive and a place where families and friends can still gather today.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I met my wife Angie after my freshman year in College. We got married in just six months and we celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary this year. We have been blessed with two great kids. Kylee is a senior at A&M and Kade is finishing up his sophomore year. Both of my kids graduated from Celina High School and were very involved in the school as well as the community. Being on the Fire
Department for 11 years and now serving on council/mayor since 2009, a lot of my time is taken. My family has always supported my decisions. My wife and kids make me proud every day.
WHAT COULD YOU SPEND HOURS DOING? I love to drive and explore. I could get in a car or motorhome and drive all day looking at the countryside. There are no better memories than exploring with the ones you love.
DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT MEAL. A T-Bone Steak with baked potatoes and my Mom’s fried okra.
WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN CITY POLITICS? I live by the motto "if it's not me, who would it be?" I was approached by past mayor, Corbett Howard, while I was on the fire department. He asked me if I would consider running for Place 6 on the council. I was honored that he asked me and I ran. I ended up winning my first election and the rest is history. I see no better way of making a difference in your community than serving on a board and being involved in the city in which you live. It’s a great honor that I take very seriously.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE AS MAYOR? There have been a lot of great experiences but I think the best one is being able to honor our students with proclamations. When we are able to recognize all of the outstanding work these kids are doing and bring them into the council chambers, that is very special. From academics, band, athletics and even a Rodeo Queen, we have some very talented kids that deserve to be recognized for making the school and the city a better place. “I have been very blessed that my core family has always been supportive and I love them all dearly for that.”
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT CELINA? The one thing (really two) that I wish people could see through my eyes are all the amazing people that work so hard making Celina a special place. So much thought goes into every decision the council and staff makes to keep this city great. We have some incredible citizens that make Celina THE place to live. Most of it goes unnoticed but without them we would just be another run of the mill city. People in Celina just want to help people without the recognition or being called out that they did something. They just do it because it’s the right thing to do. From the council and staff standpoint, they do so much work behind the scenes to make sure we are making decisions based on what the majority of the citizens want. It really does take a village and we have wonderful people building it.
26
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE
WHO INSPIRES YOU? My family is my biggest inspiration. My parents have always supported me and pushed me to be the best person I could be as well as setting the example. My wife and kids have always allowed me to serve whenever the calling came. I have been very blessed that my core family has always been supportive and I love them all very dearly for that.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR THE FUTURE OF CELINA? The most exciting thing about the future is all of the upcoming changes which include lots of parks, walking trails, downtown drainage, connectivity, commercial retail, and new restaurants. It's exciting to be able to welcome new people into our community and show them what makes Celina so great.

BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED Local Gardens Growing Young, Confident, Self-Sufficient Students One Plant At A Time ARTICLE BY WENDIE WIGGINTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED A quick glance into the history of Celina will tell you how deeply rooted this town is in farming. Even as developments continue to pop-up and Celina continues to grow, you can still drive along portions of Preston Road and the back roads and see cotton fields much like the ones the first settlers who arrived in1846 planted to support their families. As each new generation passes it is important to continue to teach our children the importance of farming. Tawnia King and the team at Celina Friends of the Garden, a local 501(c)(3), have found a way to do just that. The Garden of Oz at Lykins Elementary School and the Giving Tree Garden at O’Dell Elementary offer opportunities for Celina ISD students to get hands on experience in learning to plant, decompose, and how to be self-sufficient by growing food. It takes science learning to a whole new level and more importantly it takes it outside. Gardening is a healthy and fun activity that can help improve motor skills and for kids. These gardens create an environment where Lykins and Odell students can learn new skills such as planting, mulching, weeding and how to use garden equipment. It also helps them to build responsibility in caring for the plants. It creates a love of nature and teaches cooperation. Students also gain a better understanding of the animals and weather impacts to the garden. The Garden of Oz and the Giving Tree Garden twice a year plant flowers and vegetables that attract some of natures most productive animals including birds, butterflies, ladybugs, worms, and other interesting insects. These gardens teach the students how to understand and appreciate the delicate balance that each of these creatures plays in food production and the ecosystem. Establishing a thriving garden does not happen without a lot of hard work and the Celina Friends of the Garden is always looking for partners and donations to help. Some ways that you can get involved with the garden • Monetary Donations • Donating tools, seeds, and plants, or by building or repairing composters and water systems, • Offer an hour or two of your time to help maintain the garden in weeding and watering It’s been proven that maintenance of a garden and getting outdoors helps to reduce stress and improve one's mental and physical health. In a time where outside stressors can lead to increased insecurity and stress in our kids, the work that the Celina Friends of the Garden is doing will benefit the students as they grow and blossom like the gardens they help care for.

The Jeter Home
The Tuite Home, owners of Super Splash Car Wash
Modern Farmhouse Updates To A Favorite Trend Is the popular trend in home design, that rustic minimalistic Modern Farmhouse, on the way out in 2022? It had a meteoric rise over the last few years especially here in Celina where many homes still boast land stretching far and wide peppered with goats, horses and maybe a cow or two. With so many fleeing the city and searching for a simpler life, the farmhouse is here to stay for the foreseeable future. A newer, cozier version of the Modern Farmhouse has arrived. People are enjoying the comforts of home and looking to add more natural laidback elements to their interiors. The beautiful simple clean lines of the exterior of the house remain, while the interior gets softened with soft, neutral textures and colors. By adding natural woods inside with exposed beams, hearths, and oak doors, farmhouses painted with bright whites or moody darks are instantly warmed up. The soft, natural textiles added to sofas in the way of chunky knitted throws and pillows bring an air of bohemian comfort to a room.
On the floors you will find patterned tile and herringbone brick as well as wide plank white oak. Large blacktrimmed windows remain allowing lots of natural light to encompass the space. Shiplap is being used but more as an accent on a single statement wall, in a bathroom or adorning a vent hood. Paneled wood in varying designs are being used on walls, like on a stairwell or behind a bed, to add movement and texture to the room. The perfect white is still being sought with perennial favorites being White Dove or Simply White by Benjamin Moore and Alabaster by Sherwin Williams. But also, deep rich colors are being used to add dimension or even help highlight favorite collections of the homeowner. While the Modern Farmhouse has departed from it's original starker industrial feel, the bones of the home and the beauty of the elements remain but in a softer more familiar way.

GOING SOLAR CELINA RESIDENT AND OWNER OF NCS ROOFING & SOLAR HELPS WITH YOUR DECISION TO GO SOLAR

H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN
As Spring approaches, the weather gives a reprieve from high electric bills at least until summer. But what if you could save money on your electric bill, plus help reduce your carbon footprint? Brian Dyer has the solution. Celina resident, Brian Dyer, is the owner of NCS Roofing and Solar. He has been in the roofing business for sixteen years and recently partnered with Titan Solar Power. Dyer “saw a need and demand for solar panels” as many of his roofing customers inquired about the new energy trend. Dyer believes his company is the best choice to help you go solar. He researched numerous companies before he joined Titan Solar Power. Dyer realized that many of the companies focused mostly on sales and commissions, and recruiting salespeople, rather than an

emphasis on customers. By becoming a partner with Titan Solar Power, Dyer works directly for the customer by “taking out the middleman and giving the customer the best service available.” Just how popular is solar energy? The United States Department of Energy predicts that one in seven homes in the United States will have a rooftop solar system by 2030. Dyer says that over the next two years more homes will be equipped with solar panels than the homes over the last forty years that previously installed solar panels. The benefits of solar panels include a significant reduction in your monthly energy bill, reducing the carbon footprint and helping the environment, as well as increasing the value of your home. Dyer notes solar panels immediately increase the value of your home. He states that “homes with solar panels sell 17% faster than those without panels.” The United States Department of Energy agrees. According to http://www.energy.gov, “one study by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory showed that on average, solar increased the value of a home by about $15,000.” And since solar power is so plentiful, that is another great reason to invest in solar. Not every house qualifies for solar panels. Dyer recommends you set up a complimentary evaluation of your home and roof. Engineers will then study the roof, as well as analyze your energy consumption to determine if the solar panels would generate enough power for your home. As soon as the panels go online, families with solar energy will then only pay for the financing of the panels and a small fee to stay on the electric grid. You no longer will pay an electric company for consumption of energy, plus you’ll be using green energy. Brian Dyer and his family enjoy living in Celina. He and his family love “everything about Celina, especially the people.” Brian’s fiancé, Dana Draper, is a life-long resident of Celina and runs Fidelity National Title on the downtown square. Brian’s goal is to help people in Celina save money on electricity and make his beloved town a little greener. He believes in the stability of his company and the quality he gives to his customers. Now is the time to set up a free consultation with Dyer and learn more about solar power. To learn more, call Brian Dyer at 214.407.8248 NCSRoofing.com
