A popular Christmas tradition for families is to look at Christmas lights and decorations. The best kept notso-secret Christmas light display in Celina is located off Preston Road on Redbud at the home of Eric and Melissa Becker. Many people around town just refer to it as the “house with all the lights on Redbud". The Beckers have decorated their house since 2006 beginning with small and modest lights. It was a fun hobby that slowly grew over the years. Now, the display has over 1,000 pixels of lights and a 55-foot Christmas tree in the middle of the front yard. The technology is what makes the display fun for Eric Becker. As the owner and founder of Automation Integration in Celina, Eric Becker plays with electronics all day for a living, so it was only natural for him to create a Christmas light display at home. He says because technology keeps changing and improving, so does his light show. Besides the beauty, the main attraction of the display at the Becker house is the light show. The lights are synchronized to music for the ultimate entertainment. Furthermore, what makes the display even more unique is that visitors can pick the songs making each show unlike the last. Becker said that each year he adds songs to the list. Visitors watching the show can pick a song from a website posted on a sign in the yard. The music library varies from Country, Rock, Disney, and Christmas, of course. The Becker children particularly like it when someone picks a Disney song or a song from the movie, “The Trolls”. Becker says the light show takes about two weeks to set up with the help of his two kids and neighbors. He says “it really does take an actual village to set up” as the big tree itself takes five to eight people to build, for example. When asked if Becker bribes the neighbors to help he jokes, “whatever it takes.” And what do the neighbors think about “the house with the lights”? Becker says the neighbors

don’t mind. It helps that they live on a one-acre lot where everyone is not on top of each other. He adds that because the people of Celina are respectful of the neighborhood, it will continue. It is not his desire to make the show cause traffic jams or disruptions. Each year Becker is contacted to participate in a light display reality television competition only to decline the offer to keep the display manageable to the community. “It would make it unenjoyable,” says Becker. Despite that, the light show has a steady flow of onlookers. Becker does not charge admission but does request visitors bring canned foods which are donated to Grace Bridge. The display is so popular that Becker guesses last year they collected approximately 300-400 cans of food! It gives them such satisfaction to contribute back to the community by helping others in the spirit of Christmas. In fact, that is why he does the light show display every year. He and his family love to bring joy to others during the holiday season. Becker realizes it really does bring families together with families looking forward to it every year. He recalls one family told him they literally change their kids’ bedtime routine to revolve around the Christmas light show. It is that reaction, Becker feels, that makes it all worth it. The light display begins on Thanksgiving night and will continue until about January 1. If you visit the show, don’t forget your canned goods donation. BLUE SANTA TEN YEARS OF COMMUNITY GENEROSITY

In 2012, The Celina Police Department's Blue Santa program was born out of addressing the need of Celina Independent School District (CISD) school children at Christmas. What began with assisting a handful of students has grown to meet the needs and, sometimes, wants, of over 100 CISD Kindergarten -12th-grade students. Celina ISD counselors and administrators confidentially identify students in the district that will benefit from participating in the Blue Santa program and pass it on to Officer Chase Guidera, Celina PD's Public Information Officer in charge of Community Relations.

"We are the middleman, the UPS. We take in the gifts provided by the generous community and deliver the gifts to Celina students. The Celina PD has the blessing of focusing on the personal aspect, the personal touch," Officer Guidera says. The CPD relies on the school district to screen and provide an accurate record of the needs and wants of their students. That information is sorted into a list that allows community members to "adopt" a family by providing the items on the Christmas list. Sometimes these items are basic: coat, shoes, and personal hygiene. Other times, the "wants" include a specific doll, LEGO set, sports equipment, and the like. Whether the child asks for new joggers or a cool technology gadget, Officer Guidera suggests sharing the support of adopting a family for Christmas. "We encourage people to get together with their neighbors, sports teams, social clubs, and businesses, to give generously to those in the Celina schools and community. This is an opportunity to focus on Celina taking care of Celina. Our hope is that once a family is adopted for the Blue Santa program, the kids become their kids and the donor treats them as such" encourages Guidera. Ten years of working with CISD and the community to generously provide Christmas gifts for students has resulted in a successful Blue Santa program. Christm as On The Square ANNUAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION IN DOWNTOWN CELINA Celina's annual Christmas on the Square is always a local holiday favorite. This family-friendly event that was hosted by SRC Local Markets in Celina's Historic Downtown Square offered attendees a charming, small-town Christmas celebration reminiscent of a Hallmark movie. Neighbors, friends and family experienced the wonder the season brings by visiting with Santa, partaking in holiday treats, and enjoying festive live entertainment.

Local Christmas Performers Entertaining performances by local schools, churches and dance groups brought the Christmas spirit.

Are you looking for a family-friendly place to experience the magic of Christmas this holiday season? Look no further than the Miracle on 134th Street in Celina. Open for its second year, the Miracle on 134th is the place to create memories and celebrate Christmas in a family-friendly, natural environment. The Miracle on 134th, located east of Preston Road on County Road 134, is the vision turned reality of Lyle Wise. Prior to opening Miracle on 134th, Wise and his family ran the Venue at Waterstone. But Wise wanted to create something old-fashioned like what he and his wife experienced as children. In 2021, the couple decided to rebrand the venue and focus on the Christmas exhibit.

Now in its second year, Miracle on 134th is a place for families to explore Christmas in a natural and beautiful environment with a country feel. Attendees can walk around the vast land and experience all the activities built entirely by Wise and his family. This year, Santa’s Workshop returns where you can watch Santa’s elves and interact with them. In the workshop, you will also find the classroom where elves learn, see the area where the letters come to Santa, and of course visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Speaking of Santa, his sleigh is also onsite - perfect for pictures and observing the landscape of lights. Walking around the property, you will also see Sugarplum Fairy Island where the Sugarplum Fairies live and where confections are made. There is also an area for making s'mores, having cookies and hot cocoa plus watching Christmas movies under the stars. Throughout the month of December, Miracle on 134th will have local singers, school bands and choirs perform. Other activities include a “Christmas Carousel”, a merry-go-round fit for the season, and the “Reindeer Railroad”, a train that drives around the entire property showcasing the beautiful Christmas lights. Kids can enjoy a petting zoo and bounce houses. Miracle on 134th is not just for kids. In fact, their website says it “is a place for all ages because at Christmas there is a child in all of us.” Lyle Wise wanted to build something people would want to come back to year after year celebrating the miracle of Christmas and family traditions. Wise states, “Our family is very close and Miracle on 134th is like our family. We want families to feel that closeness when they come here.” He continues “it’s like a Hallmark movie. Come for the openness, beauty, and nature and make it a Christmas family tradition.” Wise intends on growing Miracle on 134th each year to eventually include a replica of the Little Town of Bethlehem. He still hosts special events at the Venue on Waterstone like charitable events or fundraisers but his emphasis, the heart and soul, is celebrating the Christmas season. When you come, be prepared to walk as Miracle on 134th is bigger than it looks. Lyle Wise notes, to fully enjoy the experience you will need to walk around the entire grounds and “breathe and take it all in.” Miracle on 134th Street is open until December 23. When people are asked why they came to Celina, they will likely talk about the sense of community that is shared among the residents. They will talk about the people here, how open and friendly they are, and how willing neighbors are to help neighbors. That is true for KJ Clark and Corbett Howard. Both are active members of the Preston Trails Rotary Club and this year’s leaders of Celina’s second annual Toys for Tots campaign. These two have led the partnership with the Preston Trails Rotary, the City of Celina, the Celina Independent School District, and the American Legion Post 145. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the Marine Toys for Tots Program. Their mission is to collect new toys and distribute those toys to less fortunate children during the Christmas season. Both KJ and Corbett are military veterans themselves and are passionate about connecting the community and those who have served this country. The Marine Toys for Tots program is the perfect combination to bring both passions together. 2021 was a remarkable year in which 1,230 toys were collected by the Celina Toys for Tots campaign. And in this second year of operation, hopes are high that even a greater number will be collected. The organization will have boxes stationed around the Celina community to collect your donations. KJ and Corbett are excited to see how the community answers the call to help. All the toys collected in Collin County will stay within Collin County through donations to local organizations such as Grace Bridge and Blue Santa. The last day to donate is Wednesday, December 7th. On the last collection day, the community will join forces with the local Marine Corps Reserves to host a drivethrough toy collection assembled on the Celina Square. Using our beautiful town square, Fox4 News will broadcast live from the event while volunteers will be on hand to help

unload your cars beginning at 6:00 pm. This special event will include a visit from Ean Sullivan, a Retired Marine Corp Colonel who served in Vietnam. There will also be free hot cocoa from Kim and Cleve Wickliffe with Swirls Bakery. The motto for Rotary International is “Service above self”. This group takes its mission very seriously and we’re proud that they have been a fixture in Celina for many years. They’ve been involved in Celina festivals including Cajun Fest and Friday Night Markets. They participated in building a local Habitat for Humanity home here in Celina as well. Their biggest fundraiser is the Annual Flag Program. All of these fundraising programs allowed them to offer $5000.00 in scholarships to graduates of both Celina and Gunter High schools and $9,600 to the Collin College Foundations in 2021. This program is near and dear to KJ’s heart. He shares a time when his family was struggling, and they were given Christmas toys for their children. He reminds us that you are not only giving a toy to a child, but you are giving the gift of encouragement to the parent. This simple gesture can help a struggling family, reduce their load, and show them that their community cares. How can you participate? Simply purchase a new and unwrapped toy for any age or gender child. While all toys are greatly appreciated, gifts for preteens and teens are most in need. You can drop off your toys at any drop station around town until the final day of collection. Meet Celina Native Natasha Hickman. Her parents moved to Celina in 1982 and she is what some refer to as a BRIC (Born & Raised In Celina). She is a Lending Assistant at First State Bank Celina. In addition to her career, Natasha and her husband Josh have three children - Sarah (24), Kyleigh (18), and Krew (12) - and one grandchild. On the eve of Homecoming, Natasha and all the cheer alumni were recognized at the community pep rally. She shares with us what Celina and Homecoming mean to her.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CONNECTION WITH CELINA, TX. Growing up it was me, my sister Nicole, and my brother Nathan. We lived in a little house in town, where you rode your bike to Bobcat Kuntry to get sour straws, drinks, and anything else you could get, hoping E.L and Teena Marks would let you charge on your parents’ account. We played outside until dark and waited to hear my mom’s whistle, which meant it was time to come in for dinner. On Friday nights, you could hear Donald Hamm over the PA system saying, “First down Bobcats,” and Ms. Ada Faye Williams on the microphone at the track meets yelling, “RUN!!! RUN!!!!” Everyone knew each other, and if your parents didn’t know where or what you were doing, someone else did! The list could go on and on, but this is my hometown and it’s all I’ve ever known. I love Celina, and I’m still here because it’s HOME.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOB AT FIRST STATE BANK. I am the Lending Assistant to the Branch President, Chad Anderson, and the other lenders at our branch. I oversee all PR and Marketing and ensure First State Bank stays involved within the community, schools, and local events to show our continued support. up were the parade and wearing your mum to school. The parade brought out so many townspeople, old and young. I have memories of seeing all of the people in their lawn chairs and blankets lined up on the street just waiting patiently for the sound of the fire truck to start.

WHAT DID CHEERING FOR CELINA MEAN FOR YOU PERSONALLY? Growing up in Celina, everyone wanted to be a Bobcat Cheerleader. CHS Cheer Camp was a must to attend during the summer. I did Pee-Wee Cheer until you could try out in 7th grade for the school. Trying out for HS Cheer was on another level of awesomeness! I cheered for my Bobcats all through High School and it was amazing. I took great pride in cheering, getting the fans on their feet on Friday nights, making the playoffs, and decorating the town.

AS A NATIVE, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL ANY NEWCOMERS TO CELINA? Celina is like having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family that you can count on. There are so many stories here when you take the time to peel back the layers. Only then, you will understand what makes our small town so SPECIAL! This is my hometown, but it’s also the BEST town. I am proud to be from Celina, It’s a BIG part of what makes me the person I am today.

A LOT HAS CHANGED ABOUT CELINA OVER THE YEARS. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE CHANGE? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OF IN THE FUTURE? Yes, much has changed over the years. We use to drive into “town” to get groceries, so having a grocery store now has been a good addition. I love the view of pastures, livestock, and tractors. I would like to see more volunteering and helping the elderly community. I would welcome programs through the school and the city that would better serve the elderly citizens of Celina.

When the weather outside is frightful, a warm mug of hot chocolate can be delightful! This treat is for the adults, so take it up a notch with your choice of liquor. Enjoy this drink with cookies and candy canes while you wait for Santa this year. Boozy hot chocolate can be customized, so garnish with glee and enjoy the season.

B O O Z Y H O T C H O C O L AT E INGREDIENTS • 2 cups whole milk • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped • 3 ounces liquor of choice, such as bourbon, rum, or a cream liqueur • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 pinch kosher salt • Optional toppings: mini marshmallows or whipped cream, chocolate shavings, sprinkles

WARM THE MILK: 1. Warm the milk in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat until it begins to barely simmer but not boil (watch for small bubbles around the edges). ADD THE CHOCOLATE: 2. Add in the chopped chocolate and whisk until combined and smooth, about 5 minutes. There should be no remaining specks of chocolate, the color should turn from a pale tan to a milk chocolatey brown, and the bottom of your pan should be coated with the mixture. REMOVE FROM THE HEAT AND ADD THE REMAINING INGREDIENTS: 3. Remove from the heat and stir in the liquor, vanilla extract, and salt. COOL SLIGHTLY AND SERVE: 4. Let sit to cool to a safe drinking temperature for about 5 minutes (still hot but not burning). Pour into heatproof mugs. If a skin forms while cooling, just whisk it for a few seconds to reincorporate. Enjoy as-is or topped with desired toppings.

Salt Dough Recipe *Makes about 12 ornaments Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season.

Step-By-Step 1. Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry.

2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½ to ¼ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking.

3. Place ornaments on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake.

4. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side.

4. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
