MICHELLE ELLIS DISCUSSES HER FAMILY’S EXPERIENCE WITH COLIN’S HOPE

A few simple precautions have the ability to save someone’s life. This is something that rings true for Michelle Ellis. “We lost our son, Nathan, at age 16. He drowned at Lake Georgetown on July 4th, 2017,” says Ellis. “Often, when there is a drowning reported on the news, someone in Families United to Prevent Drowning reaches out to see if you want the support of other parents who have experienced a similar loss.” In August 2018, Ellis was introduced to Alissa Magrum, the then Executive Director of Colin’s Hope and current Strategic Advisor. Magrum offered Ellis’s family the opportunity to carve time out of their busy days and make a difference. “The first event with Colin’s Hope that I was involved with was their annual kids’ triathlon. My then 10-year-old successfully completed it, while my two older sons and I volunteered wherever we were needed,” says Ellis. “It was

right after the one-year anniversary of my son’s loss, and a very bittersweet experience.” Ellis has since participated in the organization’s life jacket initiative at Mansfield Dam, arranged a presentation at Tom Glenn High School, and engaged in a day of awareness at the Capitol. An especially cathartic and inspiring experience came from the annual National Water Safety Conference. “Losing your child is the hardest thing a human being can go through. Yet, if you are open to it, you have the ability to turn that tragedy into a driving force for positive change in your community,” says Ellis. “Colin’s Hope has impacted thousands of children and families in Central Texas. No one who volunteers with them will regret it.” Colin’s Hope launched a site in 2022 called drowningispreventable.org to share water safety resources. Spare Birdie was a long-awaited addition to Cedar Park. It was the dream of two brothers, Aaron and Taylor Holmes, who envisioned a destination for food, fun, and fellowship. As owners of Goodfolks in Georgetown, they wanted to expand their ventures into a welcoming 23,000-squarefoot space. “I was very intrigued by not only the food, but the entertainment side of the concept,” says General Manager Greg Goodwin. “Still, I would say my favorite aspect of Spare Birdie is the food. Our chefs have worked really hard on creating very unique dishes and flavor profiles.”

Company Executive Chef Justin Manzi and Executive Chef Eduardo Nava aim to source their menu locally whenever possible. From spicy lamb meatballs to blackened shrimp pasta to truffle brie grilled cheese, they offer a meal to remember. “Cedar Park was lacking in upscale food, beverage, and entertainment options for adults. You had to drive into Austin or go to the Domain,” says Goodwin. “The atmosphere is achieved through the architectural features of the building, the level of quality in the furniture, and the unique food and drink offerings.”

“Now, people can stay in their own community to have the dining and entertainment options that only existed elsewhere prior to Spare Birdie," says Goodwin.

In the final days of construction, they pulled together the details. This includes Spare Birdie's fun array of golf bay games, ranging from baseball, football, soccer, hockey, carnival games, pool tables, and darts. And there is much more to come! “There are a ton of moving pieces, and getting the details of those pieces right is what creates the experience,” says Goodwin. “We will begin showcasing local music with our outdoor stage, and begin doing some promotional menus and special events that tie in with holidays. We’re looking at working up a brunch menu for Sundays too.” The Spare Birdie team is thrilled to bring elevated entertainment to 1400 Discovery Blvd. With its culinary and bar programs, and outdoor and indoor games alike, they have something for everyone. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TACKLE THE 100-HOUR JACKALOPE JAM? “My fiancé had done numerous 100-mile races in the past. However, since I was in school until recently, I never made the time to train for races of that caliber. I would still go to his races to cheer him on and volunteer. That said, I have done one half-marathon in 2019 (Cowtown in Fort Worth) and one 50K in 2021 (Salt Flats Endurance Race in Utah) since running at a collegiate level.”

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST PART ABOUT TRAINING? “As a result of staying consistent, my calves have adapted and are more relaxed when I run. I've also noticed this with my breathing, which is so necessary to be comfortable while running. Another best part about training is being able to be outside! I get to see the sunrise, the sunset, the flowers bloom, the leaves fall, the birds fly, the ducks swim, the people wave, and so many interesting things that I wouldn't see if I decided to stay home.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE SPOTS TO RUN AT? “I enjoy the Brushy Creek Trail and going down to Town Lake the most. Both of the routes are well-maintained and wide enough for other users to pass with ease. I recently joined a running group called Trail Sisters since moving back to the area, which introduced me to the Suburban Ninja and Violet Crown trail systems. The trails are a bit more technical but are a great way to change scenery and keep running fun and fresh!”

WHY ARE YOU SHARING YOUR JOURNEY ON SOCIAL MEDIA? “It’s important for me to encourage people to move more. I'm aware that running can be intimidating to new runners and even those wanting to go the next distance. So, I hope to share helpful tips from stretching to rehab exercises to provide an additional resource to turn to.” @drveronicapardo on Instagram

In her hometown of Mexico City, Maricela Pena-Jaimes discovered a passion for cooking. Upon moving to Texas in 1997, her excitement toward food only evolved as she worked in the food industry. “Growing up, my mother would always talk about owning her own restaurant,” says Ruben BetancourtPena. “In 2020, she decided to make her dream come true. Me and my younger brother, Kevin, backed her up all the way. Everything happened so quickly.” The goal was to develop a restaurant atmosphere that anyone would feel comfortable in, along with an authentic menu with fresh products. In creating the menu, Maricela focused on offering a wide variety of dishes and drinks. “My mother went with a Tex-Mex menu with a twist of traditional. With her knowledge and experience, she put together her best recipes that she would make at home, to show her love for cooking to the public,” says Ruben. Through the journey of establishing Dos Mary’s, the family has committed to staying united. Their staff has also become part of that united front. “Many of our staff have been with us since day one. Candlelight Ranch was once run by a small but passionate group of volunteers. Founded in 1999 by Don, Jeri, and Randy Barr, the beautiful area on Lake Travis’s north shore intended to be a place to serve and support children and their families with terminal illnesses. “I was introduced to Candlelight Ranch in 2006, shortly after losing my daughter, Reese, to a terminal illness. Although she was only here with us for six short months, she taught and instilled in me lessons in life that have grounded me,” says Development Director Tara Gray. “The doctor that took care of her fragile body but powerful soul had been a part of Candlelight Ranch since its inception. She invited my family out to the Ranch for a volunteer event.” Gray then learned about the all-accessible treehouse on the property. She was presented with the idea that, if enough money was raised to pay off the treehouse, they may be able to dedicate it in her daughter’s memory. “The minute I was told that, my life shifted. I was given a purpose, a channel to release my grief, and a way to give back to others,” says Gray. “In less than six months, we raised well over the amount and I became Board President. Now, the treehouse is named Reese’s Treehouse. There are days when we have programming out at the Ranch and I get to show families her treehouse while sharing the message of strength, hope, and love.” The Barr family turned their mutual love of children and nature into a mission. Today, Candlelight Ranch aims to make these meaningful and magical experiences for everyone that steps foot on the property. “The dream to transform the lives of those in need began humbly with a Hill Country property, hiking trails, and a few picnic tables,” says Gray. “Over the years, we have grown our facilities and steadily

increased our reach to the community. We now serve around 1,700 individuals per year and partner with over 35 local non-profit organizations and schools.” People of all ages and backgrounds come together to explore the unique plants, animals, and geology found on the 40-acre property. The nature-based curriculum at Candlelight Ranch provides an exciting window into our Central Texas environment. “Plant hikes, recycling, gardening, fishing, animal and plant identification, macroinvertebrates, aquifers, and geology are a few examples of what we teach at the Ranch,” says Gray. “The majority of families we serve don’t have safe access to parks and greenspaces, or the financial means to participate in outdoor recreation activities. But time spent in nature has been proven to increase mental and physical wellness.” The equine program, in particular, has made a big impact. Comet, the ranch horse, and Astro, the donkey, have captured the hearts of veterans who need to connect and share empathy, and have brought peace to many suffering from trauma. They have even helped a young non-verbal man learn to vocalize while working with them. “Family Days and Military Family Days at Candlelight Ranch encourage families to disconnect from technology and the stressors of everyday life by taking time to just have fun and be in the moment together,” says Gray. “Our programs provide positive experiences that help families create joyful memories.” If you want to participate in kayaking, crafting, and the many experiential games and activities Candlelight Ranch offers, head to candlelightranch.org to learn more. In 1998, Band of the Hills was formed with the mission to share passion and compassion. Starting with 18 members driven by their sense of community, they founded a space that brought together a harmonious, unified performing concert band. Band of the Hills is now home to over 100 members, ranging from teachers to executives to retirees. “I enjoy seeing members of all abilities working alongside each other. This benefits everyone and improves their skills in the process,” says Michial Meyer, Treasurer and member of 25 years. “It is wonderful to see members of all backgrounds working together and helping each other.” “I was a music major in college with the intent of becoming a band director. My career took a different turn and I went years without playing,” says Teresa Gardner, member of 21 years. “When I found Band of the Hills, it was a gift to play again. It’s been quite the journey going from a very small group that played easier music to a large group playing more advanced music.”

Band of the Hills brings live music to Cedar Park and surrounding areas. They perform anything from classical pieces to show tunes. The band entertains crowds during public shows at several venues, including holiday celebrations, festivals, formal concerts, and senior living facilities. “My favorite memory was playing at a senior center during Christmas,” says Amy Murray, member of 19 years. “In our audience was a former band director who was about 90 years old. He wandered down the hall and came back with his baton, then led our ensemble in several carols. His daughter was there and started crying—she was so overwhelmed with joy at seeing her dad conduct again.” Band of Hills has been fortunate to have Director Bob Dalrymple through every special moment. Over Dalrymple’s four-decade career, bands under his direction have performed and won competitions in Texas, Colorado, Louisiana, Florida, Missouri, and Georgia. In 1987, his high school band even represented the United States as the first to tour Russia in years. “The band has enjoyed 25 years because of the continuity and dedication of the longest-running director in the Austin area and the leadership strength of its members,” says Dalrymple. “I love the pride the band members take in performing each concert.” Many students who have played with Band of the Hills through the years have returned as adults. The experience doesn’t end at graduation. Spouses, parents, children, and siblings all come together with the knowledge that music is an activity they can enjoy for their entire lives.
