Blending Family Tradition with Modern Innovation da Vinci Pools owner Guido Del Re shares how relationships keep his business flowing

When you think of pools, you might also think of swimming, relaxation, and beautiful outdoor spaces. With the help of the Greater Austin premier pool company da Vinci Pools, all of those boxes get checked. But there is a rich history and culture behind da Vinci Pools that extends beyond their custom-designed models. Guido Del Re grew up in Mozambique under Portuguese citizenship. In 1975, when Mozambique turned communist, his family made their way to South Africa. Just a decade later, the Del Re family decided to take on the American dream, traveling over 9,000 miles to Austin, Texas. “We chose Austin because of family and friends who also moved there, its small city feel, the Southern hospitality, and the

welcoming vibe that existed back then. Lake Travis was an added bonus since I sailed and was involved in the boat business,” says Guido. “But the most important part was the possibilities for our future here.” Family, trust, and loyalty are incredibly important to Guido. His dream to start a pool company for Austin homeowners was inspired by the knowledge and passion expressed by his father. Guido’s father had designed and built pools in Africa since his mid-twenties, passing down his attention to detail and sense of integrity. Come 2001, the da Vinci Pools journey was underway. “da Vinci Pools was started by me and my brother Tiago after watching our father’s struggle with his business, particularly with his business partners. right,” says Guido. “We developed a bond of loyalty and trust with all the changes our family went through. It was a new and fun opportunity.” In 2020, Guido took over sole ownership as Tiago stepped back to focus on sales and design. The da Vinci Pools team—including Guido’s wife and bookkeeper, Wendy; sister and lead designer, Maria; and project supervisors who have become more like family, Jennifer and Mike—continue to offer the same level of quality to homeowners. They are committed to the relationships they develop with their clients, and take pride in every unique creation. “When we have repeat clients, it’s a good feeling to know we did those things right for them,” says Guido. “We also have strong, loyal, and long-term relationships with our employees and skilled trade contractors. Many of our contractors have worked with us for 15 to 20 years. Some of them started out as kids and have gone on to build their own businesses and start families of their own.” With the support offered by da Vinci Pools, those subcontractors have been able to sustain their businesses. Guido has even sponsored some of his subcontractors working on their path to U.S. citizenship. As critical as it is to him to design backyard retreats that accommodate clients, it is equally necessary for him to maintain bonds with da Vinci Pools supporters. “I have many meaningful memories from da Vinci Pools. In particular are the relationships that I have built with clients, employees, and contractors,” says Guido. “I have attended family dinners, holidays, graduations, and baptisms over the years.” Austin’s landscape has drastically changed since the day da Vinci Pools opened its doors. Despite that, Guido is enthusiastic about the future and his business’s ability to grow into something even bigger. With the recent addition of their showroom floor, which includes various tile manufacturers and Ledge Lounger pool furniture, he hopes to provide a welcoming space for clients to visit and discuss their projects. Trevor Stevens was proudly serving in the United States Army when he arrived in Texas. Since being discharged and settling in Leander, he was drawn toward home services. It was a career path that he felt would allow him to really give back to the community. “I was inspired to work in the window and door industry while working with my fatherin-law for several years, and then as an independent contractor,” says Trevor. “By that time, I had about 10 years of experience. I knew moving forward in owning my own window and door company was the best step for my family.” Josselyn Stevens, Trevor’s wife, was completely on board with the idea. She wanted to support her husband’s vision to own their own family-centered, morally-driven business. But the two wouldn’t be able to do it on their own. So, they talked to Chris Bonnet, who has been a friend for half of their lives.

“He didn’t even have to think about it. He said, ‘Yes, we’re doing this. When are we doing it?’ And that night, Trevor applied for the whole legal part,” says Josselyn. “The next day, we were in our living room, making our first sale. That was before we even had a website up!” In a short time, Clean Cut evolved into a large team that handles multiple installation projects each day. Still, the focus on family is at its core. The three partners never wanted to lose time with their kids, so there were many days of everyone working in the living room together. Today, despite now having a location, there is no shortage of family at Clean Cut. “Stepping into the office brings instant joy, as we’re reminded that we get to work with such great friends,” says Chris. “This relationship is contagious throughout the company since each of our employees sees us in great spirit. That spirit helps mold our culture of being family-centered, trustworthy, and cohesive.”

Clean Cut has experienced its fair share of hardship, making this energy all the more needed. Beginning right before the pandemic, they quickly had to adapt. Instead of in-home consultations, the team went virtual, even creating an easy-to-use DIY tool for customers to submit their own measurements. Yet, the biggest hurdle has not been COVID tests and masks. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019,” says Josselyn. “I used to independently practice family law, but after my diagnosis, I couldn’t continue working. When we started Clean Cut, it was partially to give me a professional purpose. Now, a lot of the giving back that we do is for the breast cancer community.” In the midst of visiting customers, Josselyn and Trevor have made time for appointments and treatments. Chris has seen them through several phases of Josselyn’s diagnosis, finding ways to be as supportive as possible. With three children, the Stevens had been put under a tremendous amount of stress. You know that if something does happen to you, your kids still have people who are going to show up.”

He wanted to start a brand that revolved around hip-hop—something that resonated with his peers, that he could build a people-oriented culture around. Since 2006, Avalos’s twist on barbecue has been recognized across the state and by Food Network. “Mark has seen the business grow from a simple trailer focused on catering to four brickand-mortar locations and three food trucks,” says managing partner Raf Robinson. “The brand has also evolved from its original name of Sugar Shack BBQ to SLAB, which stands for Slow, Low, And Bangin’.” SLAB’s concept is based on feature items representing iconic barbecue flavors from the Carolinas, Alabama, Memphis, and Texas. When customers started to ask about purchasing sauces and rubs to take home, Avalos’s team decided to kick off a Dirty South-inspired line. “Mark reached out to a friend in Georgetown who was bottling his own line of hot sauces to understand the process of getting FDA approval to sell outside of just our restaurant locations,” says Robinson. “Mikey V has been bottling our sauces and rubs from the beginning.” To both Avalos and Robinson, barbecue is a cultural experience around bringing people together. If you are improving your own barbecuing skills from home, they recommend going slow and low. Plan ahead, take your time, and make sure to have fun.

When visiting the San Marcos River, you find yourself surrounded by giant bald cypress trees. These trees are among the longest-lived in Texas. A native of Martindale, Bob Tumlinson was familiar with these natural features and grew a love for trees overall. Paired with his entrepreneurial spirit, Tumlinson found that starting a business in the green industry simply made sense. “Years ago, as I was selling firewood from dead trees on my property, I started to receive questions and requests from folks regarding tree services,” says Tumlinson. “The more I looked into this area of business, the more it seemed like a good fit and a need I could help fill.” Tumlinson took a swing at the opportunity. But before he could build his business, he needed a name. “Good Guys,” Tumlinson felt, was representative of the devotion to honesty and integrity he wanted to enforce. Beyond that, the name holds a memory from two decades prior. “An old friend of mine named Sam invented a totally new game with washers that we would play

together, with rules based on the film The Big Lebowski. On the score sheet, he would always list himself as the ‘Good Guys’ versus me,” says Tumlinson. “It always made me laugh and, for some reason, it stuck with me.” As Tumlinson established his brand, it earned a reputation tied to the commitment to be the Good Guys. There have been many happy customers across Cedar Park, Austin, and Round Rock, thanks to their immense knowledge of tree health. For instance, they recommend deep root fertilization to address problems with Central Texas soil. Tumlinson and his team know that everything they give goes to an outstanding cause.

“Every opportunity we’ve had to partner with St. Jude has been an amazing experience. A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
