What are YOU thankful for? Something that we all desire at our core is a sense of community. We want to feel like we belong, like we are heard, like we are loved. And you may find your community when you aren’t even looking for it. I have always had anxiety. For many years, when I had to give a presentation or was asked to read in front of the class, I would break down in tears. By the time I got to high school, although I had found more of a voice, my hands would shake and I would feel like I was drowning. I hated it when teachers told my peers to pay attention because it meant that they would all be looking at me. Sitting back down at my desk left me in a combined state of mortification and relief. Putting my thoughts into writing was never an issue. That was where I thrived, where I still thrive. I explode out of my shell when I get behind a pen or a screen, which is why I have far too many journals stacked beside me as I type this. When I’m in the midst of creation, I am my best champion. Cedar Park City Lifestyle has given me the opportunity to not only grow in my craft but to put myself out there in ways that I never could have imagined. In September, I had the pleasure of attending my very first CL conference in Kansas City. That experience has made me even more grateful to hold my position as Editor and even more proud to be involved with this publication. I realized with open eyes that I belong, that I am heard, that I am loved. Throughout the second installment of our Thankful Issue, you are going to see what gives the people around us purpose. From inspiring acts of service to providing equally inspiring services, they show how their paths have guided them toward their own sense of community. My hope is that this issue makes you look into yourself and consider when you are your best champion. Thank you for allowing me, Pam, and Greg the chance to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. And thank you for waking up every day and breathing life into the city we call home.

Alexis Mariana Rodriguez was born in December 2017. She loves wearing bows and skirts, showing off her doodling skills, and being a big sister to her brother Alan. When she isn’t in school surrounded by her friends and caring teachers, she may be found riding her bike or in the studio at Art Beat Dance Center. She also spends her days undergoing therapy. Having met or exceeded all of her milestones as an infant, Alexis’s parents, Eileen and Abel, were surprised when she was late to start walking. Their first stop was with an orthopedic specialist who said there was no need to worry, that she would be up and moving in her own time. “Two months later, Alexis was walking,” says Eileen. “She has always been super active and full of energy, and has a very determined and persistent personality. She loved to be outside when she was little and we would walk to the park effortlessly.” At 21 months, it was found that Alexis had myopia. Additionally, her front teeth had never grown in and she was beginning to fall sideways

while walking. Even Alexis’s ballet teacher noticed how rigid her legs would be in an attempt to hold herself up differently. With the lack of clarity from specialists, Eileen’s concerns grew as both a mother and a medical professional. “It was a conversation with a friend of mine at a park that finally led me to call the neurologist,” says Eileen. “We got in within a week, which was amazing. They are expanding Texas Children’s into Austin and this particular neurologist was coming monthly. It was crazy how things fell into place for us.” Upon doing an MRI and genetic testing in September 2021, Alexis received an official diagnosis of 4H leukodystrophy. This is a rare condition that affects the brain, which was only discovered about 11 years ago and currently has no treatment or cure. “It took about six months for me to finally start my Instagram account,” says Eileen. “I knew there had to be a bigger reason, a bigger purpose, for us to be going through this. If we could expose this disease and what it does to these kids, people would be more aware of it. Geneticists would think about it. When kids have such a severe eye problem at such a young age, it should pop up in ophthalmologists’ minds.” Since kicking off her online efforts to raise awareness and funds for 4H leukodystrophy, Eileen has met other families in similar situations. She has received the support of her FIT4MOM community, as well. From there came the idea by a friend to host a fun run to get people to #MOVE4ALEXIS. “It was a great turnout. We had shirts, we got the park—everything worked out really well. This year, we did the same thing, but went out to get even more exposure,” says Eileen. “We sent the

money we raised to the Yaya Foundation, which is the foundation we’ve been working with that has all of the contacts for researchers who are working on a treatment.” While they have raised $32,000 for the Yaya Foundation and are still going strong, the Rodriguez family set out to make their second fun run centered around therapies for Alexis. Specifically, they have hope for the incredible advances in technology that the NeuroSolution Center of Austin brings. “It’s hard to put our story out there. I was never a social media person to the point that I am now, but it’s an ever-evolving thing,” says Eileen. “I just want the world to know that 4H leukodystrophy exists, and that Alexis is full of life and deserves to live.” Find out more about Alexis’s journey by going to ourjourneywith4h.org (where you can also donate) or by following @ourjourneywith4h on Instagram.

When you make the turn into Flat Creek Estate, you are surrounded by rows of beautiful vineyards. Soon, you are fully immersed in a landscape that is uniquely Texan. As an all-day attraction welcoming people from any walk of life, owners Eva Horton and Neal Golden have helped to make Flat Creek so much more than its hundreds of awards and accolades. At the center of this premier wine destination is a fresh-faced team committed to serving up a memorable visit. That includes distinguished Winemaker Olivier de Certaines and Chef Brian Osborne. Osborne came into The Bistro with a resort background, where he learned the significance of the overall customer experience. He and his wife also spent recent years farming on their 15 acres. “Everyone at Flat Creek shares in that wonderful salt of the earth, Southern hospitality that Central Texas is known for. I cook elevated food, but I’m very much a country boy with a simple lifestyle,” says Osborne. “I want to show that things grow in our own backyard and it can be just as good, if not better, than some wildly expensive imported product.” Osborne shares his vision for a locally-grown menu alongside de Certaines. Long before arriving in the Texas Hill Country, de Certaines grew up among the vineyards of Beaujolais, France. He is proud to be part of the pioneer generation of the Texas wine industry. “A lot of winemaking techniques that are studied come from California. So when Texans first started making wine, they tried to do the California style,” says de Certaines. “But now I see more

and more wineries going away from that, finding their own identities. That’s why it’s so exciting to be here. In my cellar, it’s fun because I get to experiment—there are no limits to creativity.” Flat Creek Estate’s working winery is known for its incredible attention to detail. This is seen through the nighttime hand-harvesting of grapes and the utilization of a special yeast from a lab in France to produce the right wine. What makes all of this possible is constructive feedback. Osborne has always heard from his mother that people are attracted to those who hold themselves accountable. Similarly, de Certaines finds great value in learning from the words of those around him. “No one can ever make the same wine, so it’s important to be very open about the process. There are no secrets in the winemaking world. As an industry, we need to share more and work together. That’s how we improve,” says de Certaines. “At Flat Creek, we know that not all wines are perfect for every time and every person, so we have something for everyone.” Dining with Flat Creek Estate means the perfect pairing of wines with seasonal selections, whether it be during a full-service meal or small bites on the Pavilion. When I’m stuck, I walk around and think, ‘How would nature do this?’” says Osborne. “And when I’m foraging, trimming a plant, or cutting something, whatever it is, I think about all the love that I can put into it. 1. Preheat oven to 475°F. 2. Using a mandolin or sharp knife, thinly slice oranges, lemon, and tangerine 1/4- to 1/8-inch thick. Remove any seeds. 3. On a parchment-lined baking sheet, place half of the citrus slices. Lay chicken pieces on top evenly. 4. In a medium bowl, whisk together olive oil, molasses, allspice, salt, and pepper. Brush 3/4 of the sauce onto each piece of chicken. 5. Place remaining slices of citrus around the chicken and roast for about 35 minutes. Halfway through roasting, baste chicken with remaining sauce. 6. Top with thyme. Serve.

After attending medical school at Texas Tech, Dr. Brian Earthman was drawn to psychiatry and mental health treatment. At this time, the field was limited within its three gold standards—medication, counseling, and therapy. But mental health treatments are constantly evolving. Over the past two decades, neuromodulation therapies have emerged to aid in depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other conditions. These therapies are based around the understanding that the nervous system is not only chemically oriented, but also electrically oriented. “There are many options out there. Go on the internet and search ‘treatments for depression.’ Now, what you’ll have to filter through is what is actually FDA-approved, level-one legitimate treatments,” says Earthman. “Everything we do at Cedar Park TMS is FDA-approved. We don’t want people wasting their time and money on things that aren’t likely to help them out.” Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a revolutionary treatment that Earthman champions. When Rhonda and Larry Salerno bought a property in Spicewood, it was intended for weekend getaways. But when they arrived as empty nesters, they discovered the joy of meeting people in the same stage of life. With their house in The Woodlands soon sold, Rhonda was anxious to make roots in the Austin area and create lifelong relationships. “There was a CycleBar territory available in Bee Cave and it just felt right. Then, while we were in the construction phase of Bee Cave, we were approached by CycleBar Corporate about the Cedar Park studio being for sale,” says Rhonda. “It just fell into our laps. The Cedar Park studio was fully operating—what better way to learn the ropes of running a CycleBar?” Rhonda’s on-the-go training meant that she quickly realized that CycleBar is all about the riders, whether they are brand new to indoor cycling or longtime pros. They come for the ride and stay for the culture. Through both of her franchises, Rhonda has been able to show love to her newfound home with CycleGives. This platform allows her team to create charity rides based around

great causes, ranging from breast cancer awareness to the American Heart Association to dog rescues like Love-A-Bull. “Every year we dedicate a CycleGives ride to Susan G. Komen, and every dollar is donated. We ask riders to donate $15 to ride, and we offer prizes, food, and drinks. Last year, we sold out every bike,” says Rhonda. “Also, if an instructor or member has a charity close to their heart, I enjoy creating an event to benefit it.” Rhonda values the inclusivity that CycleBar offers. Anyone can do their full-body workout classes, and all can participate in their CycleGives initiatives.
