The Mouth Is More Than A Set Of Teeth... It Is A Gateway To The Body Chronic oral inflammation, gum disease, and untreated infections release harmful bacteria and toxins into the bloodstream. Research has shown that these circulating pathogens can contribute to systemic inflammation, which is a known risk fac tor for cognitive decline, memory loss, and even Alzheimer’s disease. In this way, poor dental health can accelerate brain drain, while proactive dental care can help support brain gain. Chewing also has a direct neurological benefit. Studies reveal that mastication stimulates blood flow to the brain, improving attention and short-term memory. Furthermore, the relationship works both ways. The brain influences the mouth as much as the mouth influences the brain. Stress, anxiety, and depression often show up first in the dental chair, whether through jaw clenching, teeth grinding, or neglect of oral hygiene. Dentists are often the first health professionals to notice early warning signs of systemic and neurological conditions. The idea of brain gain reminds us that dentistry is not just about a bright smile. It is about protecting overall wellness, extending healthy years of life, and keeping the mind sharp. Investing in regular dental care, brushing, flossing, professional cleanings, and timely treatment, does more than preserve teeth. It preserves the brain, supporting memory, mood, and cognition. At E Dental Solutions, under the care of Dr. Wissinger, our commitment to excellence means we look after more than just your smile, we help protect your overall health.

Why Arizona Sports Matter. It's Not Just a Game.
January 2026 PUBLISHER
Jeff Herr | jeff.herr@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
You often read comments from our neighbors questioning why we need Wildcat sports when the University's role is to educate us. Well, safe to say that those screaming fans -- of all ages -see something, feel something, in the sports we embrace with love and dedication. What follows is a Facebook post we received from Cathy, a Wildcat alumna, immediately following the Arizona-ASU football game. She captures the often intangible magic that happens when we assemble. In the end, it is about love. "Our kicker, Michael Salgado-Medina, definitely struggled at the beginning. A lot. So awesome to see his teammates constantly encouraging him (especially as the ASU crowd gave him a hard time). Every time he came back off the field, he kicked over and over into his net. Game face on, so focused, never distracted, he kept moving forward. Even when he was scoring, he came back the same way and kicked more and more. As women & mothers, we felt horrible for him. We just wanted to hug him and tell him it's ok (again, while the crowd was awful). We started shouting to him, 'You've got this! We're proud of you! Go get them!' He never acknowledged us nor looked at us; we figured he couldn't hear us (though we were in the front row). As you know, if you watched, he finished out the game strong. So happy our Wildcats won, but the BEST part was this: At the end of the game, Michael turned around to us with a big smile and said, 'I want to thank you for your kind words. I heard everything you said, and I appreciate it.' He followed it with his hands shaped into a heart towards us. WOW. We were so touched. What a nice, kind young man. A shout out to his parents for sure!!! Now, if you are one of those obnoxious fans, on both sides, yelling at those boys, SHAME ON YOU!! Shut your X@!*% mouth!! They are boys, some still teenagers; it's not like they mean to miss a tackle, a kick, or a throw. And they often hear you and your harsh words. WORDS DO MATTER!! DO BETTER! We are proud of you, Michael. You are awesome, you are great at your job, and you are a good, kind-hearted young man, the most important thing of all. GO WILDCATS!!" Thank you, Cathy! And Bear Down! EXERCISING SAFELY IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA
Physical activity may be the foundation of a healthy life, but in southern Arizona, staying active requires equal parts intention, respect for the desert, and thoughtful planning. When done well, that balance creates a sustainable, energizing path to better health. Most adults can thrive on a mix of consistent cardio and strength work. The goal is to accumulate the equivalent of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, balanced with two or three strength sessions that challenge all major muscle groups. What often gets overlooked is pacing: beginning at roughly half of your typical exercise intensity allows your body to adjust gradually, making it easier to increase your workload over six to eight weeks without risking injury. Even something as simple as tracking your heart rate can help guide the effort—using the classic formula of 220 minus your age and aiming for 50 to 70 percent of that number keeps most people in a safe, effective training zone. In the desert, however, even the best training plan needs environmental awareness. The dry heat acts quickly, often before you realize it, which is why timing becomes just as important as the workout itself. Most outdoor sessions should happen before sunrise or after sunset during the peak summer months, and when temperatures climb above 90 degrees, indoor options are no longer just convenient—they’re necessary. Hydration is another non-negotiable: drinking 16 to 20 ounces of water for every hour of activity keeps the body functioning properly, and choosing light-colored, breathable clothing helps regulate temperature. Dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, and a racing heartbeat are your earliest warnings that your core temperature is rising too quickly, and ignoring those signs can turn dangerous fast. For older adults, movement offers one of the most powerful tools for maintaining independence and quality of life. Beginning with gentle chair exercises, resistance bands, and slow-paced walks helps rebuild strength and confidence, while balance work significantly reduces fall risk. Many seniors find that pool-based workouts provide refreshing relief from the heat while supporting joint health. Medical clearance is essential before starting any new program, and group classes can provide both structure and social connection. As one instructor said, “Fit doesn’t stop at 65—it evolves. With smart modifications, gains keep coming.” Just as important as movement is the fuel behind it. A balanced diet rich in complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats supports everything from energy levels to muscle repair. Most adults benefit from 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, while carbohydrates should make up nearly half of total calories. The desert’s climate adds another layer: water needs rise significantly as temperatures do, and most residents should aim for at least 64 ounces per day in winter and closer to 80 to 100 ounces in summer. Electrolyte replacement becomes increasingly important for heavy sweaters or those exercising outdoors, and using the region’s seasonal produce—winter citrus and leafy greens, or summer melons, figs, and peppers—can offer both hydration and nutrients in one. Certain populations require more tailored guidance. People managing diabetes may need to monitor blood sugar more frequently in the heat, while those with heart conditions must be especially cautious about salt replacement and hydration. Older adults often need more dietary protein to preserve muscle mass, and anyone with kidney concerns should always consult a physician before adjusting fluid or electrolyte intake. Safety remains the thread running through every part of a smart fitness plan. Recognizing the earliest signs of heat illness, adjusting workouts during poor air quality in monsoon season, and understanding how medications impact heat tolerance all help keep activity both productive and safe. Sharing your workout plan with a friend or family member and keeping emergency contacts close adds another layer of protection. Tracking your progress doesn’t have to be complicated. Weekly check-ins on how you feel, monthly assessments of strength or endurance, and even quarterly doctor visits for those with chronic conditions can keep you moving in the right direction. A simple journal noting your workouts and hydration patterns often becomes one of the most revealing tools of all. There are also clear moments when professional help is essential. Chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, persistent dizziness, confusion, severe muscle cramps, or a rapid heartbeat that doesn’t settle with rest are all signs that something more serious may be happening. Living—and thriving—in southern Arizona means moving with intention, hydrating with discipline, and respecting the climate every step of the way. You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. One thoughtful adjustment, one early-morning workout, one extra glass of water at a time will carry you safely toward the health and strength you want.

TIP #1 YOU CAN STILL HAVE A VARIETY OF HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS FOODS BY PLANNING AND PREPPING YOUR MEALS FOR THE WEEK. • Preparing whole meals or dishes ahead of time saves a lot of time for busy people. • Ingredients required for specific meals can be prepped ahead of time to reduce total cooking time in the kitchen. • Having pre-prepared meals on hand can also reduce portion size and help you reach your nutrition and wellness goals. • Choose microwave and freezer safe containers for proper storage, including BPA-free plastic, flexible silicone or glassware containers. • Example: Choose familiar recipes for tacos, chili or spaghetti in the same week to use all your ground beef or turkey. I brown the ground beef and portion it in freezer bags flattened out for space saving freezing and time-saving cooking. • Pre-cut vegetables can be used for fresh ready-to-eat meals that do not require cooking, like salads and sandwiches or as part of a cooked recipe. Include leftovers in meal planning. • I also cut up ripe fresh fruits and freeze them to use in smoothies instead of throwing them out. • Frozen fruits and vegetables often cost less and last longer than fresh ones. They retain high-quality nutrients because they are frozen immediately after being harvested. • Most frozen vegetables have no additives and preservatives, but some may contain added seasonings, salt, sugar or sauces. Avoid added ingredients by paying attention to the label and ingredient list.
• A list helps limit distractions, keep you on budget, restricts unhealthy impulse purchases and reduces multiple trips for forgotten items. • Buy kitchen staples to have on hand to make quick simple meals like canned tomatoes, tuna fish or salmon, corn, your favorite beans and grains such as rice, quinoa, barley, farro and whole grain pasta. • Plan your menus based on grocery store sales and produce that are in season and add beans for plantbased protein. • Buy extra staples when they are on sale, and don’t overlook the bulk bins to buy just the amount you need. • Buy pre-prepped items in the grocery store to further save time or use the salad bar for small servings.
TIP #4 T RY N OT TO G R O C E RY S H O P W H E N YO U A R E H U N G RY. • Everything looks delicious when you are hungry, and this could lead to unnecessary and unhealthy food purchases. • The additional calories may not be needed, and food could be wasted if not eaten.

Opportunity That Grows Through a Classical Education At Leman Academy of Excellence, we believe that a quality, classical education expands the opportunities for each young person and is vital to the success of the entire community. A classical education turns to history to help a child gain a greater understanding of the world around them. We believe that there is no greater way for your child to achieve success than to gain knowledge, build character and develop strong values. These core beliefs guide our course of study in our grade K-8 programs as well as in our preschool classrooms. Now Enrolling for the 2025-2026 School Year
