Blessed by those who care for our kids and critters Hello kind readers. This is our fourth issue. The magazine continues to grow. And the community has given heaps of encouragement and support. Which to us is great news! It's really our mission to bring fun and inspiring stories to our friends and neighbors in the Catalina Foothills. In this issue, we turn our focus to our young people. And our pets. You'll learn more about a therapeutic riding program and a feature story about a group of University of Arizona students who volunteer to provide good times and laughs -- in princess regalia no less -- to children fighting for their health. That's some good stuff! We also turn our attention to the amazing work being done by the folks at Pima Animal Care Center, widely regarded as the best municipal animal center in the country. For that, we thank the staff, the volunteers, and the foster families who work every day to "save one until we're done". And hats off to the Pima County executives who understand the importance of caring for our furry friends. Also, please take note of the remarkable photography of southern Arizona's very own Robert Gallucci. He hosts photography workshops chasing thunderstorms and capturing photos of the Milkyway and many other spectacular things in our world. Horses To little riders healing, these large and gentle animals often bring peace and wonder.

Tucked away in the middle of Tucson, children of all ages can take part in the variety of services offered by TRAK Ranch. Since 2007, TRAK has provided therapeutic and fun experiences by, in the words of barn manager Tatum Thelander, “bringing the Western way of life back to Tucson.” From summer camps to equine therapy, TRAK has a program for everyone. Referred to as “TRAK magic” by program director Chelsea Menke, the calming energy the horses hold is instantly felt upon stepping on the property. According to Menke, the feeling of safety children get allows them to open up and grow through their animal interactions.

It was relay race day at camp, and groups of children were eagerly lined up, ready to take on the obstacle course in front of them. The course, which included walking over poles, weaving in between poles, and turning around a barrel, represented a culmination of skills the children learned throughout the week. Their confidence shone through their little faces, as practically every child dismounted their horse with a grin. Clementine, 10, started off at camp feeling nervous around the horses. As she spent more time with them, she shared her excitement about finally understanding everything, saying, “I felt really good.” She loves riding and grooming horses, and her favorite horse is Hollywood. Ezra, 7, loves all of the animals at TRAK. When he’s riding horses, he said he feels happy. His favorite part of camp is, “petting [the horses] and riding the horses.” Liam, 12, also shared Clementine’s feelings about being nervous. But he said that “the horses are really calming for some reason”, and now his favorite thing to do is go fast! He enjoys spending time with the horses, and his proudest moment at camp was when he almost cantered! Athena, 8, loves to “walk on the horses.” She loves every part of camp, but she especially loves, “riding the horses, picking up chickens, and petting the rabbits.” She said walking isn’t super bouncy, and that her favorite horse is Monyoso. “The animals are happy,” Thelander explained, “so you’re happy.” That happiness is available for children of all ages to access, with horsemanship programs beginning at age 4. One special program, though, stands out in particular to Menke. After partnering with the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance (SAGA), TRAK established a therapeutic riding program for Tucson’s LGBTQ+ youth. Menke saw a need for a safe space and a sense of community, and sought to create a solution by employing “TRAK magic”. Want to experience it for yourself? Just come on down! Free tours are offered for people who want to see what TRAK is all about, and their website holds details on their volunteer orientations for those looking to get more involved. After spending a day on the property, I can confirm that TRAK magic is real.

In December of 2020, a group of University of Arizona students banded together with one mission: to spread hope and happiness to populations of children who would otherwise never get to experience those special moments. The result of that group, Giving a Little Arizona Magic (GLAM), can be found anywhere a child needs a smile, from one-on-one hospital visits at Diamond Children’s Hopistal to attending family events at Reid Park Zoo. GLAM’s mission to, “provid[e] creative programming to children that are disadvantaged, whether that be medically, socioeconomically, or in foster care” is felt deeply by each volunteer, and is evident in each child they interact with. One of the most powerful interactions, volunteer Skyler Cully explained, is with the children who are hospitalized. Cully, who has been doing character-based volunteer work for three and a half years, has personally witnessed the health journeys of many children, both positive and negative. One of the most rewarding feelings, she said, is watching children heal and conquer their health battles. “We don’t realize how much of an impact we can have on somebody’s life.” Rachel Becker, one of GLAM’s active character volunteers, describes. Watching children connect to her favorite childhood characters in the same way that she did brings her excitement each time she dons her costume. The excitement felt by the volunteers is felt within the community as well, as GLAM’s characters can be found regularly at Reid Park Zoo for family events. These events, which are a favorite of a number of volunteers, encourage a greater reach into the community. Hannah McAlister, GLAM's current President, believes that any day where she or her volunteers can make a child smile is a good day. GLAM’s services extend beyond hospital visits and public events. They also volunteer their services for birthday parties free of charge, with donations encouraged. Where can you find GLAM next? From virtual visits during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, to events attended by hundreds of people, GLAM is quickly becoming a community name in Tucson. As said by Cully, only one word can be used to describe the work these students are doing: magical.

As we have discussed previously -- including in the June issue -there are people absolutely obsessed with monsoon storms and all the dramatic action that ensues (sometimes). Robert Gallucci is one of those people. Rob is an award-winning photographer who lives south of Sierra Vista. He relocated to Cochise County from New Jersey years back, drawn by the storms, the high-desert landscapes, and the spectacular wildlife. He offers workshops focused on capturing lightning storms, sunrises, sunsets, and the Milky Way over iconic landscapes in the foreground. In the spring, he works with the City of Bisbee to shut off street lights, revealing clouds of stars above the town. The Milky Way in all of its glory.

Rob says there are new techniques and technologies that help capture the elusive bolts as they strike. Given the unpredictability of lightning, in the past, it might take hundreds if not thousands of shots to get the image. With today’s new innovations it may take less than 100 photos to capture many lightning strikes. Rob is fond of saying that southern Arizona is one of the most unrecognized and epic photography locations in the United States. Part of his mission when he moved here was to change that, to let others know that this region is every bit as beautiful and iconic as other places in the United States. One has only to see the dust-infused colors of a southern Arizona high-desert sunrise to understand the unsurpassed

Every year nearly 20,000 dogs and cats (and sometimes other creatures) end up in animal shelters in Pima County. Thankfully, a network of big-hearted volunteers, professional caretakers, and civic leaders dig in, dedicated to an endless mission to get these stray or abandoned creatures into loving homes. These match-making efforts focus on pairing the right animals with the right homes. The work is endless. It plays out in massive facilities like the world-class Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) and storefront rescue centers in malls like Rescue Me Marana. And the caring work is done by hundreds of foster families who bring frightened animals into their homes for gentle care and a little peace. In fact, these animal lovers seemingly go to the ends of the earth to help keep animals in their original homes or find new families to take them in. And some of the situations are heartbreaking Kimberley Kelly is one of those crusaders who just can't stop. She found a home for Gil the Wonder Pup, paralyzed from the waist down. Today, Gil is living his best life on the

Mroz ranch near Durango, Colorado. Today she is trying to rescue two paralyzed dogs. "I'm currently working on rehoming two other paralyzed pups," she said, adding that "One is Jazmin, from Mexico, who had horrible, horrible injuries and was never supposed to recover and yet is thriving. The other is a border collie mix named Luna who was shot in the spine in a drive-by shooting." What is striking is that, in the face of such cruelty, these rescuers are full of love and optimism. Maybe that comes when all the pieces come together and an animal finds their forever home. Like Gil. Or Royal. Cindy Hefley is a board member and volunteer at Rescue Me Marana in the Marana Premium Outlet mall. She said that a family from Las Cruces happened to be shopping at the mall when they met Royal, a german-shorthair pointer. "It was a perfect match. They wanted a strong active family dog to be a jogging companion." Royal was the perfect fit and is now home in New Mexico. Cindy has been working at Rescue Me Marana since it opened a year ago. ENCRUSTED SALMON WITH SPICY ORANGE-MISO SAUCE It's salmon season. This will wow the crew with a flavor explosion. ARTICLE BY JEFF HERR Every summer (the fish willing) we see an influx of fresh, wild salmon from the Pacific Northwest showing up in markets across the West. This Peruvian recipe, both savory and sweet, is a fresh and exciting way to bring it all together! And it also will bring new ingredients into your summer!

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons sake 2 tablespoons mirin (see Note) 1/4 cup ají amarillo paste (see Note) 2 tablespoons white miso 3 tablespoons fresh orange juice 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice Four six-ounce center-cut salmon fillets Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 1/2 cup cooked quinoa 3 tablespoons canola oil 1 small cucumber—peeled, seeded and diced

DIRECTIONS: STEP 1 Preheat the oven to 400°. In a small saucepan, bring the mirin and sake to a boil. Whisk in the ají amarillo paste, miso and orange and lime juices and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 20 minutes.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, season the salmon with salt and pepper. Press 2 tablespoons of the cooked quinoa onto the skinned side of each fillet.

STEP 3 In a large ovenproof nonstick skillet, heat the canola oil. Add the salmon fillets, quinoa side down, and cook over high heat until the quinoa is browned, about 2 minutes. Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast the salmon until almost opaque throughout, about 4 minutes.

STEP 4 Using a spatula, carefully transfer the fillets to plates, quinoa side up. Spoon the diced cucumber alongside and serve with the orange-miso sauce.

NOTES: • Mirin is a sweet and tangy rice wine. You can substitute regular rice wine. But it's not quite the same. • Ají amarillo paste is a spicy Peruvian yellow chile paste. It’s available in many supermarkets including Trader Joe's.
