This is no sleepy, old pueblo. Not at all. Sure, the university campus is quiet. And the snowbirds have headed north. But some exciting work has made our city a little better. A great deal of work has been put in by University of Arizona athletes. The tennis, golf, softball, and baseball teams turned in stellar performances in recent weeks. And the football, volleyball, and basketball teams are putting in the hours to be ready for new seasons ahead. Those endless road construction projects like Broadway, Grant, Oracle, and Fort Lowell are mostly complete. Nice work! And Tucson's bold restauranteurs continue to surprise and delight with new themes and menus. We are trying to keep up but they show no sign of slowing down. Even the monsoon outlook is pretty darned good! Fingers cross. And let's all keep washing our cars to tempt the rain gods to give us a good soaking. So enjoy this vibrant town we call home. This taco from El Mezquite Grill and Taquiera is piled high with confit brisket and paired with their house salsa.

BATA Described by chef de cuisine David Solorzano as specializing in “carefully sourced New American cuisine”, BATA’s constantly changing menu creates a new flavor experience at every visit. Their dishes use only locally sourced ingredients, including corn from the Tohono O'Odham nation. Despite changing weekly, a consistent guest favorite is their smoked pork shoulder, braised for 12 hours. An extensive wine list and craft cocktail menu holds creative and unique drinks for every taste. Not a fan of alcohol? BATA’s mocktail selection has all the flavor with none of the liquor. Check out the Cherry Shrub, containing house-made vinegar and cherries for a clean and refreshing drink experience. Cruda Mariscos and Oyster Bar Seafood? In Arizona? Cruda Mariscos and Oyster Bar sources fresh seafood directly from the Gulf of Mexico. Serving up fresh Kumamato oysters and Micheladas piled high with ceviche, owner Danny Cordova brings the flavor of Sonoran seafood right to the desert.

A best-seller is their Camaron Culichi, prepared with cheese and poblano sauce, made with either shrimp or red snapper. Burgers and pasta on the menu make sure that Cruda Mariscos and Oyster Bar has something for everyone. Bright neon signs on the walls make for great photos, but their menu makes for an even greater experience! El Mezquite Grill & Taqueria Although this restaurant is connected to the Hilton DoubleTree by the Tucson Convention Center, you don’t need to be a hotel guest to experience this handcrafted Mexican food. Chef Carlos Ochoa makes “honest, good food” and incorporates his Mexican roots into every bite. Slow cooked for 12 hours, their suadero tacos are loaded with melt-in-your-mouth brisket on top of their house-made tortillas. Dip it in their house salsa for an explosion of flavor! Mixology is the bar’s specialty, and their Heaven or Hell margarita is a bestseller. Served alongside a jar of chile-infused vodka, you can choose your own level of heat or sweet.

The Delta If you’re looking for “genuine Southern hospitality with a healthy dose of spirited swagger” look no further than the text on The Delta’s menu. With a moody New Orleans aesthetic and a full absinthe setup, The Delta’s unique take on gastropub fare is nothing short of fun. Their stuffed pork rib crown coated in tamarind glaze and filled with vegetables slathered in cilantro butter elevates Southern comfort food with a southwestern twist. Wash it down with their favorite signature cocktail, Killer Parties Almost Killed Me. Made with house infused vanilla-ginger rum, served in a peacock glass, and finished with fire, this drink definitely lives up to the “Damn Good Cocktails” their menu promises.

The Monica With either grab-and-go options or a plated menu, The Monica dishes up comfort food that, according to marketing director Ami Fong, tastes like your grandma made it. Named after the 1922 El Charro Cafe founder, The Monica has been honoring her namesake for just over two months. Their open kitchen’s recipes change every day and their bar serves up everything from smoothies and coffee to cocktails. Fong’s go-to meal is their homemade chili paired with green chile cornbread or their goddess salad loaded with street corn. To drink, Fong recommends The Trash Diet, a traditional espresso martini crafted with Mexican chocolate.

These are the days of summer that the monsoon-obsessed begin watching for cotton-ball clouds forming above the Catalinas, Rincons, and Santa Ritas. This is when weather patterns shift and dry air from the west is replaced by powerful, tropical winds that flow north from Mexico. With significant moisture flowing in, those clouds rapidly grow through the afternoon into towering, dark battleships. Soon, if conditions are right, those giants break free from their mountain anchors and begin to move across the parched desert. It’s at this point that excited storm chasers race to their computers to track each thunderhead, assessing the direction, speed, and total moisture load in each cell. With this insight, plans are hatched and routes selected to hopefully intercept the strongest cells. Cameras loaded, maps in hand. And this might be a very good monsoon season. Recent forecasts suggest we have a very good chance of more, stronger storms this year. Maybe close to 2021’s record-setting monsoon season! What do you do when a massive, gray cloud formation begins to move your way? Thunder rumbling. The magic scent of rain in the desert fills your lungs. Time to secure your patio umbrellas. Grab a beverage. And wait for the show to begin.

ANTONE. The cocktail is said to be named after a Manhattan beach surfer who lost a surfing competition. As with many cocktails, we add one ingredient at a time to the glass. The Harvey Wallbanger is like a complex screwdriver. This cocktail became famous in the 1970s from a mascot of a silly cartoon character that promoted the Galliano liqueur. The Harvey Wallbanger became popular and became a staple through the 1990s . Then it faded when speakeasies became more trendy. The Harvey Wallbanger is a simple cocktail with a sweet and exquisite flavor. This cocktail only consisted of three ingredients,

The Harvey Wallbanger INVENTED IN 1952 THE COCKTAIL BECAME POPULAR IN THE 1970S AND AGAIN IN THE 1990S

vodka, orange juice and Galliano, when invented. The Tiki glass was designed for this cocktail and was used to serve the cocktail on the beach. Galliano, a sweet herbal liqueur, was invented in 1896 by the Italian distiller and brandy producer Arturo Vaccari of Livorno, Tuscany. Galliano L’ Authtico is a neutral alcohol and is infused with the pressings from the herbs except for the vanilla. It was re-launched in 2010 with bigger and brighter flavor. In the cocktail today we have the three main ingredients plus some extras to give it a trendy new taste.

The Harvey Wallbanger + 1½ oz. Vodka + 1 oz. Galliano + 2 oz. Orange Juice + ½ oz. Lemon Juice + ¼ oz. simple syrup (optional)

+ 2 dashes Vanilla Extract + Splash of soda In a shaker combine all ingredients except for the soda. Shake vigorously for eight seconds. Pour over fresh ice. Top with soda. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry. Enjoy!
