There's no way around the fact that summer is here. Unless you escape to San Diego or the White Mountains or Alaska. But for many -- me included -- June is the best month of the year! Swimsuits are back in the rotation. The gardens are brimming with nasturtiums, tomatoes, peppers, and sunflowers. And the days are much longer, giving us more time to be outside in the sunshine. And yes, the pool is more inviting every day. Great food abounds and icy beverages are at hand! This month we focus on these important ingredients to make summer not only tolerable but even epic! We've assembled a tactical plan to help you gather up the edible and drinkable ingredients for a weekend spent poolside. Speaking of drinkable, check out a few of the drink recipes we've found that might lead to unforgettable cocktails. Including the Arugula and Gin Blaster! Another "don't miss" is the first wave of summer concerts rolling through town this month. It's a packed list of old-school favorites! Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, ZZ Top, Herb Albert with Lani Hall, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Calexico, Buckcherry, and The Fixx. Now where is my old fanny pack... And also this month is a fantastic adventure that takes wounded warriors down to the Sea of Cortez for lots of deep-sea fishing, great eats, and good times. A few of our neighbors in these foothills have been making this trip every June for more than a decade (except when COVID-19 got in the way). And they are back! Please keep in touch! Perfect Summer Cockta ils by the Pool ADD SOME CHILL TO A HOT DAY IN THE FOOTHILLS

Tangy with a hint of sweet. Just like Havana.

T HE C L A S S IC M O JI T O One of the greatest drinks to come from Cuba, hundreds of years ago! Makes two cocktails.

INGREDIENTS • 12-20 mint leaves to muddle and garnish • 4 ounces of fresh-squeezed lime juice • 2 ounces of simple syrup • 4 ounces of white rum • 2 ounces soda water • 3 ounces of hard seltzer (lime is good)

DIRECTIONS In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint leaves by pressing the leaves with a wooden spoon or muddler. Add the lime juice, simple syrup, and rum. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and shake until cold. Place ice cubes into two glasses, and strain in the liquid. Top off the glass with soda water and hard seltzer to taste. Garnish with additional mint leaves.

ME ZCALROSEMARY SOUR The piney rosemary oils, muddled with lemon and sweetened with agave nectar, go crazy fizzy when shaken vigorously with egg white. Makes two drinks. INGREDIENTS • 40 rosemary leaves (the actual leaves, not entire sprigs). • A pinch of sea salt • 1 large egg white (the usual warning: consuming uncooked egg could make you sick). • 2 long lemon twists (about three inches) • 4 to 5 ounces of mezcal • 3 ounces of fresh lemon juice • 1 to 2 ounces of agave nectar depending on how sweet you would like. • 6 ounces of club soda, chilled • 2 rosemary sprigs (singed briefly over flame if you like a smidge of smokiness)

DIRECTIONS 1. Chill 2 tall Collins glasses. 2. In a cocktail shaker add rosemary leaves and salt. With a wooden spoon or muddler press out rosemary oils for about a minute. 3. Add egg white, lemon twists, mezcal, lemon juice, and agave nectar. Cover cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds to emulsify egg white. 4. Carefully uncover the shaker and top it off with ice. Cover and shake again for about 30 seconds until egg white is very frothy and the entire concoction is chilled. 5. Set chilled glasses out and strain the cocktail (twice is best) equally into the glasses. The mezcal-rosemary sour is the perfect addition to a warm summer evening.

6. Each drink is then topped off with 3 ounces of club soda and garnished with a sprig of rosemary.

The delightful aperol spritz.

THE APEROL SPRITZ A refreshing drink before dinner. Or while laying low by the pool, in Venice, or right here in the Catalina Foothills. Straight out of the 1950s. Makes two drinks. INGREDIENTS • 4 ounces of Aperol, chilled • 6 ounces of Prosecco or other sparkling wine, chilled • 2 ounces of soda water • Ice cubes • For the garnish: orange wedge and a straw if you like DIRECTIONS Add the Aperol to a glass filled with ice and stir. Top with sparkling wine and soda water. Squeeze in the orange wedge and stir gently, then serve, with a straw.

ARUGUL A AND GIN BL ASTER The spicy arugula paired with the herbaceous gin is a blast for the tastebuds! Hold on to your hat! We let our arugula plants go to seed and use them as an extra garnish. Makes two cocktails. INGREDIENTS • 4 ounces of gin • 2 ounces of fresh lime juice • 1 to 2 ounces of simple syrup or agave nectar • 2 cups of arugula • Lime wheels for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. In a cocktail shaker combine gin, lime juice, and simple syrup or agave nectar. Fill halfway with ice, then top with arugula. 2. Cover and shake vigorously for 30 seconds or until the outside of the shaker is chilled.

3. Strain through a very fine mesh sieve (a coffee filter might work in a pinch) into a couple of glasses and garnish with a lime wheel. And if you have fresh arugula seeds and flowers, throw them in, too.

F R U I T F O R WA R D RUN RUMMER Okay, so this one has ingredients not often found around the house. But if so inclined to stock up, you might find this to be a new summer favorite. Makes two cocktails. INGREDIENTS • 2 ounces of dark rum • 2 ounces of light rum • 2 ounces of banana liqueur • 2 ounces of blackberry liqueur • Three ounces of pineapple juice • 1 ounce of lime juice • Splash of grenadine • Pineapple wedge and/or blackberries for garnish

DIRECTIONS 1. Add 6 to 8 ice cubes in the shaker. Then pour in rums, liqueurs, pineapple juice, lime juice, and grenadine. 2. Shake until chilled through then strain into glasses filled with crushed ice. Garnish with blackberries and maybe a pineapple wedge.

We could all use a little “recovery” time after a pandemic, the ensuing economic chaos, and now a conflict in Europe. This month, nine wounded veterans got just that-- a few days of seriously well-earned time just to breathe, heal and have a blast chasing fish across the Sea of Cortez. A group of locals has been taking wounded veterans to Mexico for more than a decade as part of the mission for Outdoor Adventures for Wounded Veterans, a Tucson-based non-profit. These men and women wounded in combat put aside their worries to just fish, eat and laugh. “This gives them a bond that lasts forever,” said (retired) Col. Cosme Lopez, adding that “for a few days they don’t have worries about doctors or house bills or what’s going on in their lives back home.” Col. Lopez, who served in the U.S. Army for 26 years before retiring, is the point person who recruits wounded veterans throughout the year. “I’m working on the group for next June right now,” he said. Brothers Michael and Norman Don, along with Matt Wallace and Rom Dryden, are the logistical heartbeat of the effort. “We each have our strong points and split up the effort. One of us gets the boats or gets the lodging lined up. Or the food and beverages. Or coordinates the actual fishing,” Col. Lopez said. But it is the hour-by-hour support of the vets that takes an even larger crew, said Wallace. “It’s usually

about a 1-to-1 ratio of the vets and our support team on the ground throughout the trip.” Years of leadership serving in the Army helps Col. Lopez and the others find the right balance between keeping them safe and supported while not becoming caretakers, Col. Lopez said. “They don’t want to be babied.” But there are real issues to consider. Some veterans were blinded in battle. Others are missing both legs. Many are still working through post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other internal challenges. “Sometimes they try to make their issues less than they really are,” Col. Lopez said. “We are really careful of individual needs. It’s a balance.” And once on the water, the real purpose becomes clear: finding peace and having fun with their worries left back on land. Oh, and trying to one-up each other. Many trips include an informal fishing tournament to see who catches the biggest or most fish. “One year, the winner was a guy who lost his sight while serving,” Wallace said. "These vets are competitive and driven by their very nature. It's great to be there." Col. Lopez added that occasionally there are unexpected challenges. One warrior had to return to Tucson after the first day, unable to settle in due to mental trauma sustained on the battlefield overseas. And other times, “we will have a guy or two who think they

might get in a little trouble down in Mexico,” Lopez said. Another challenge has been keeping these efforts going, during, and after the pandemic. "We are only as strong as our supporters. But the nonprofit team also looks for other adventures

across the region. For example, if a hunter cannot make their hunt, the team will work with the Arizona Game and Fish Department to enable a wounded veteran to step in to pursue an antelope or elk or deer. “We will then work with an outfitter or guide to support (the veteran) in the field,” Col. Lopez said. “It’s just the power and therapy of being out there.”

Tucson may be getting hot, but these summer trends are even hotter! Local boutiques are gearing up for next season’s fashion to hit the racks. What upcoming trends are our favorite stores most excited about?

SWINDLERS Students at the University of Arizona flock to Swindlers for its unique vintage collection and fun, trendy pieces. Found on the always-busy University Boulevard, owner Christina Henneke caters to the artistic girl who loves to express herself. Expanding to a connected storefront this August, their one of a kind vintage curation will be doubling. Henneke and her employees pride themselves on sourcing high quality pieces for a girl who isn’t afraid to showcase her personal style. Crocheted items are Henneke’s go-to look for summer, with one special artist in mind. Handmade by boutique employee Elizabeth Barclay, this colorful crocheted bikini top is sure to turn heads!

SKY AND SAND Located in the heart of Historic 4th Avenue, Sky and Sand boasts an extensive collection of “contemporary boho pieces inspired by the desert”. Curating from local artisans and in-house brands, Sky and Sand is the clothing destination for the trendy and mature woman. As temperatures heat up, retail director Lisa Warman and store manager Belinda Pacheco are cooling off with flowy jumpsuits and maxi dresses. Bright colors and bold patterns dominate their new summer collections. Warman’s top pick is a comfy Z Supply jumpsuit that can be dressed up or down, paired with jewelry from local artist Christina Holland. Pacheco’s brightly colored maxi dress from their in-house brand Angie is the ultimate statement piece with its bold striped pattern.

Foreseeing a “Palm Beach” aesthetic for the summer, Moeller selected a pair of crisp white culottes made of lightweight polyester.
